The Portrait
The Portrait is set mainly in the late summer/early autumn 1928, and opens in France where Richard Anderson, in his mid-thirties, a wealthy publisher and writer is researching for a book he is writing on his home, Shearwater Manor, a 17th century manor house in Berkshire. The house was very run down when Richard first saw it five years earlier, having been empty for almost one hundred years, since the death of Thomas Courtney, he young squire. His ill-fated life and untimely death had deterred all prospective purchasers until, that is, the arrival of the level-headed and skeptical Richard Anderson. He ordered extensive renovations to return the manor to its former glory, and has been living there for three years, alone, except for the servants, all of whom live out, apart from Maurice, the butler, who has a room at the manor. Whilst in France, Richard meets Yvette Moreau, a young French woman in her early twenties, and after a whirlwind romance the pair fall in love. Yvette has no family, so they return to Shearwater Manor, with plans to marry some weeks later, to enable Richard's closest friends, the Appleby's, to attend the wedding. On their arrival at the manor, Yvette sees a portrait hanging in the sitting room and asks Richard about it. He tells her it is the portrait of Thomas Courtney, who became squire of the estate in the 1820s after the death of his father. He relates the tale of Thomas's short and tragic life, and his eventual suicide, following the death of his wife, Catherine, in a riding accident. However, Richard could never have imagined the effect this subsequently has on Yvette. From that point she becomes obsessed with the story, having vivid dreams and imaginings, with the result that tragedy lies in wait.

The Other End
In his day, R. Ellis Roberts was a well-known literary critic and writer. He contributed reviews and articles to a number of periodicals, including the Daily News, Observer, Empire Review, London Mercury, Bookman, Saturday Review, and Guardian. He was literary editor for the New Statesman and Time and Tide, and he hosted a book review programme for BBC Radio. In 1923, his only collection of uncanny short stories, The Other End, was published by Cecil Palmer and received glowing reviews. The critic for the Bookman declared the author 'as well able to write stories of his own as to criticise those of others', having achieved a mastery of his subject that at times 'challenges comparison with Poe and Hawthorne'. And Gerald Gould, in the Saturday Review, suggested that no nervous person should read the book when 'alone at night in a remote cottage on a lonely moor'. This new edition of The Other End includes four reviews written by R. Ellis Roberts about the work of Arthur Machen, of whom he was an admirer-for the Bookman, Daily News, and Sewanee Review-and a biographical essay by Gina R. Collia, 'R. Ellis Roberts: The Critic Who Read for Pleasure'.

A Haunting Touch
Nightmare on memory lane.I'm Darla. I'm a psychometrist. I can read thoughts and emotions left upon objects. Some people call my ability a "gift." Some people are idiots. You see, my ability isn't providing easy answers when I try to learn who killed one of my inn's guests, a developer about to cover a scenic meadow with condos. The dead developer created another problem. Turns out his job site was the location of a long-ago demolished sanatorium. Unmarked graves are uncovered. And my "gift" is leaving me haunted by the memories of some of the sanatorium's deceased patients: shifters and other supernaturals.I feel obligated to find justice for the victims, as well as solve the murder of my guest, with the help of the Memory Guild. They're great at uncovering forgotten history. But they're no help whatsoever in solving my problems. Like finding my second husband who's still missing, without offending the dreamy detective who wants to be more than friends.Or, teaching my daughter how to help me at my historic inn, without her burning the place down.Or, making sure my inn's own resident ghosts behave, without encouraging the Elvis impersonator's spirit to sing "Hound Dog" in the middle of the day.I'd always believed that in middle age I'd be living the good life. Instead, I'm living the psychic life. Of magic, mayhem, and murder.
