10 Platoon - Blitzkrieg

Evan S,James  著
2025/07/30 出版

After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, 10 Platoon of the West Staffordshire Regiment is ordered to France as part of the British Expeditionary Force; sent to join a conflict, that after years of military underfunding, they are not appropriately manned or equipped to fight. Throughout the autumn and winter of 1939 / 1940, strengthened by conscription, they prepare for another war of attrition, using training methods and tactics unchanged since the trench stalemate of 1914 - 1918. When the expected conflict fails to materialise, 10 Platoon settle into the routine of the "Phoney War" in an almost carefree adventure, finding themselves far from home in a foreign land with different customs and values. Meanwhile, driven by Nazi ideology, a ruthless, better equipped and highly trained German military machine waits to unleash a new type of warfare - Blitzkrieg or Lightning War; employing aircraft and fast-moving armoured ground forces together in close cooperation. Having tested and refined the concept during their invasion of Poland, the Germans attack Denmark and Norway in April 1940, then invade the Netherlands and Belgium in May, before falling upon the British Expeditionary Force that had moved forward to meet them. On the collapse of their French and Belgian Allies, 10 Platoon are forced to withdraw through a series of defensive lines, turning to face the Germans each time they stop; constantly tired and hungry, and with a relentless enemy snapping at their heels. Under continuous threat of aerial or artillery attack, and amid the destruction of towns and cities, they witness death of friend and foe alike; and the suffering of refugees who they are powerless to help. Mental and physical resilience are tested to the limit, fighting for their lives as the chaos of war unfolds around them; where life is cheap and there is no time to mourn the dead. Realising they are helpless to influence their fate, and not knowing if they will be alive at the end of each day, they are ordered north to the Channel coast with the remains of the Expeditionary Force; where they cling to the hope of evacuation from Dunkirk. Using a diary framework to portray the opening actions of the war as the conflict escalated across the globe, and the decisions and actions of political figures and key military leaders, shows how and why the campaign on the continent unfolded the way it did. The implications of these actions were seldom if ever understood by the combat soldier, who simply fought to uphold his Regimental pride, and for the man stood beside him in their trench. An Epilogue to the book follows the impact of these decisions and actions on the remainder of the campaign in France, and traces the roles played by these historical characters through 1940 and beyond.

The middle of the seventeenth century must have been a bewildering time in which to live in England. An autocratic king brooked no interference from parliament or from anyone else. He had been anointed by God - therefore he needed no help, guidance, or advice from any other mortal. Those who had been elected to sit in parliament, finding that their services were surplus to the requirements of Charles I, set about forcing the king to recognise their 'rights'. And so began the Civil War (not the first of these in England by any means). Parliament raised the New Model Army, completely destroyed the royalist forces, brought Charles to trial, then lopped off his head. Then followed a decade of rule by a decidedly Puritan parliament. That was, in many parts of the country, as unwelcome as had been the autocratic rule of a king hovering on the edge of Roman Catholicism. The Republic, labelled The Commonwealth, simply petered out after the death of Cromwell. His son Richard (a dismal failure), then General Lambert (who tried martial law), both came to nothing as General Monck settled things by recalling the remains of parliament (The famous Rump Parliament). To much rejoicing, back came the Stuarts in the form of Charles II. He very quickly became known as the Merry Monarch. Merry he may well have been; lecherous and self-indulgent he most certainly was. His illegitimate offspring were scattered far and wide, and from a very wide selection of women. This fact alone alienated a goodly proportion of the population who had become used to the Puritanical strictures of the Commonwealth. Hence the reason for this story being labelled 'Disillusion'. Many were distinctly disillusioned with this hedonistic king. The eldest of Charles' bastards was James Scott. Born in The Netherlands of a lady named Lucy Walter, Charles lost no time in creating the lad Duke of Monmouth - and more of him in Book 6! Bewildering? It must have been very odd to the ordinary citizen lurching from Puritanical 'correctness' to open debauchery and licentiousness in the space of just a few years.

No Man Can Say

John,Pether  著
2025/07/29 出版

The story is set around the time of the French Revolution. Clive Sinclair, a retired doctor from Teignmouth travels in Europe and notices a strange set-up in a foreign country which might help us make up its mind whether to go to war. The feed-back from London is full of praise and he is hooked; the excitement of spying makes life worth living, his skill with the sword helps. Sinclair befriends a French aristocrat, Rousillac, who is seeking a bolthole in England to avoid the early days of the Revolution. Sinclair, disguised as a dutchman, is sent by the embryo Secret Service to Corsica where he meets the Buonaparte family. Later he becomes involved with the squabbling between revolutionaries and royalists. He is recognised, but escapes, protected by Lafayette. He retreats to Paris, falls in love with Rousillac's daughter. He hides in Lille and returns to England and marries the daughter. Sinclair must return to France to rescue his son and others. He is involved in the siege of Toulon and later in the Battle of the Nile. His wife dies of consumption, but the developing Secret Service needs him. Dr John Victor Sebastian Pether. Born 13th August 1934. I am a retired consultant microbiologist, having worked for the PHLS (Public Health Laboratory Service - created pre-WW2 in case the Germans tried germ warfare - now sadly abandoned). I ran the Somerset microbiology service from a laboratory in Taunton for around 30 years, published 60 papers and discovered the first cases of Lyme disease and Hantavirus infection in England. With cash from Rentokil. I caught over a hundred rats and 100 mice, took all the 'bits' to Porton Down. Five rats had a very high antibody and should have had the virus. All good clean fun, some might say. My job has now been privatised - so no more research. When I retired, the stories in my head poured onto paper. Two novels published by you, The Slow Apocalypse and Deadly Botanicals, and two in Australia, Cotton Dust and Homo Derelictus. The present offering, No Man Can Say, was started by my father, probably in the 1950's but seemed to stop in mid-flight. It has been completely rewritten and brought to a close.
