Years after the Jackson Marshall Presidency, his oldest son, Landon, finds himself as the Secretary of Technology for Republican President Christian Langley. After a Cabinet meeting, Landon is told he will not be at the State of the Union Address, and instead will be the designated survivor for the night. While watching the address, the Capitol Building is attacked. Everyone in the building is killed, leaving Landon and a few others as the only survivors. In an attempt to escort Landon to safety, the White House is detonated in another attack. On the run, Landon is brought to Marine One, where he is quickly sworn into Presidency on the way to Camp David. While in the air overhead, he discovers that Camp David is also currently under assault. He makes a last ditch effort to travel to the Holly Kennedy Building in an attempt to find safety. During his impromptu Presidency, Landon seeks out the group responsible for the attack on the United States Government, deals with international crisis, and attempts to balance his own personal life with his family.
