Turf Wars
An NFL insider's explosive account of the ruthless power struggles between owners and players over the future of football.During his fourteen years as the head of the NFL Players Association, DeMaurice Smith was a front line advocate for football players through some of the most tumultuous crises in NFL history: Colin Kaepernick's protests, Deflategate, a lockout, two collective bargaining agreements, and more. But after witnessing the league's troubling response to discrimination and racial unrest, both within the league and beyond, Smith realized it was time to pull back the curtain and speak truth to power. Drawing from his years of unprecedented access and unparalleled knowledge of America's favorite sport, Smith documents his years leading the NFLPA and explains how the NFL distorts the truth, telling partial stories to insulate itself and grow its $20-billion-a-year brand--and the players' battles to protect themselves. From contract negotiations to battles over suspensions, Smith shows us how the union fought to protect players from the greed, racism, and dishonesty the league is built on. He also takes readers inside closed-door meetings and unreported conversations and confrontations with the industry's most powerful figures such as Robert Kraft, Jerry Jones, Tom Brady, and Roger Goodell. Turf Wars puts every NFL crisis--both familiar and lesser known--within a broader cultural and historical context, framing the league's extraordinary rise as a mirror to America's own history. Revelatory and profound, Turf Wars is a book about the soul of football: its degradation, and how to save it.

Charlie Murphy
Winner of the 2023 SABR Larry Ritter Book AwardFinalist for the 2022 CASEY Award You don't know the history of the Chicago Cubs until you know the story of Charles Webb Murphy, the ebullient and mercurial owner of this historic franchise from 1905 through 1914. Originally a sportswriter in Cincinnati, he joined the New York Giants front office as a press agent--the game's first--in 1905. That season, hearing the Cubs were for sale, he secured a loan from Charles Taft, the older half brother of the future president of the United States, to buy a majority share and become the team's new owner. In his second full season, the Cubs won their first World Series. They won again in 1908, but soon thereafter Murphy's unconventional style invited ill will from the owners, his own players, and the press, even as he led the team through their most successful period in team history. In Charlie Murphy: The Iconoclastic Showman behind the Chicago Cubs, Jason Cannon explores Murphy's life both on and off the field, painting a picture of his meteoric rise and precipitous downfall. Readers will get to know the real Murphy, not the simplified caricature created by his contemporaries, but the whirling dervish who sent the sport of baseball spinning and elevated Chicago to the center of the baseball universe. Cannon recounts Murphy's rise from the son of Irish immigrants to sports reporter to Cubs president, charting his legacy as one of the most important but overlooked figures in the National League's long history.
1978
The 1978 finals series was one we'd never seen before - and will likely never seen again. Seven-tackle sets. Not one but two matches needing to be replayed. One of which was the grand final. And the other one saw a team wanting the league to erase the result and stage a replay. Yes, a replay of a replay. As for that grand final replay, well that was played on a Tuesday afternoon - the only week-day premiership decider in history. If all that wasn't enough, one of the finalists was a perennial also-ran that ended up minor premiers. Another had two of their star players rubbed out due to suspension. And two of the other finalists were on the cusp of dominating the 1980s. Yes, the 1978 finals series was amazing.

Does the Intramural Sports Program at the United States Air Force Academy Build Character?
The use of sports to develop young men and women both physically and mentally has been a tradition in the United States for over one hundred years. It is seen as an excellent tool for developing self-confidence, building social skills, and developing character in its participants.1 But to a large extent, verifying these expectations, specifically the assumption that sports build character has been overlooked. If asked, a majority of people would most likely say that it is a fact-"sports build character."2 But is participation in sports really an effective mechanism for character development? Lately many researchers, to include Jennifer Beller, Sharon Stoll, Patricia Giebink, and Thomas McKenzie among others, have conducted a number of studies to determine if participation in sports, and specifically team sports, actually does develop character-and they see it differently. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Air Force Fitness Culture
The Air Force significantly overhauled the Air Force Fitness program in 2003 and released a new fitness AFI in January 2004. Since that time, Air Force leadership has reevaluated this program several times, resulting in multiple program updates. Overall, subjective and objective data reflect an improved fitness commitment across the Air Force. Unfortunately, after 61 operational months, it appears that the program remains short of accomplishing its primary goal of motivating all members to participate in a year-round physical conditioning program that emphasizes total fitness, to include proper aerobic conditioning, strength/flexibility training, and healthy eating. This PSP will evaluate the evolution of Air Force fitness and some options for reaching full program effectiveness. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Physical Fitness in the United States Air Force
The USAF implemented significant changes to its physical fitness program in 2004 upon the direction from General Jumper, AF Chief of Staff. Gen Jumper wanted to improve the program to be more compatible with the demands of being an expeditionary force. He made it clear that in addition to improving overall fitness levels, he wanted to change the AF's culture to include fitness as a way of life and make fitness part of every Airman's job requirement. This research project set out to explore whether or not the AF has reached its goals with the new fitness program and if not, make recommendations to improve. Information for this project came from many sources: personal interviews, informal polls, articles in numerous periodicals, unpublished papers and briefings used to obtain program approval, regulations from military branches and memorandums from Gen Jumper. Research showed that fitness levels improved from 2004 to 2005 and many units have made fitness part of their culture. But senior leadership will have to decide if the AF has done enough or if we need to continue to emphasize fitness activities. It appears that the AF's senior leadership is satisfied with the current condition of the fitness program. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
