Little Books About Old Furniture (Volume II) The Period of Queen Anne
A single chair leg, elegantly curved and poised as if mid-dance, conjures the spirit of an entire era-a time when English walnut furniture was the very language of refinement and innovation. Step into the world where Sir Christopher Wren's architectural genius found its echo in the graceful lines of Queen Anne chairs, and where Grinling Gibbons's masterful carvings adorned the homes of a nation in transformation. This volume opens the door to the eighteenth century, a period when the Dutch influence on furniture brought a new lightness and sophistication to English interiors, and Queen Anne tables and cabinets became emblems of taste and social aspiration. With a discerning eye for detail, the narrative brings to life the evolution of old English furniture, capturing both the artistry and the quiet revolution in domestic comfort that defined the Queen Anne period. From the subtle curves of a cabriole leg to the dignified presence of Queen Anne clocks, every page evokes the tactile pleasure and historical resonance of these treasured objects. The connection to renowned collections, such as those in the Victoria and Albert Museum, underscores the enduring importance of these pieces-not merely as antiques, but as living testaments to the artistry of their makers and the society that cherished them. This book was out of print for decades and is now republished by Alpha Editions. It has been restored for today's and future generations, ensuring that the stories and significance of eighteenth-century furniture are not lost to time. This edition is not just a reprint - it's a collector's item and a cultural treasure, inviting both the casual reader and the passionate connoisseur to rediscover the elegance, history, and ingenuity that shaped one of Britain's most beloved design periods.

Trade Silver Marks In The Americas 1682-1855
This book covers the silversmith marks found on Indian trade silver between the years of 1682 and 1855. To date, this book is the world's largest compendium of maker marks found on Indian trade silver. Many years of research have gone into this publication, and no other comprehensive work has been produced that is dedicated exclusively to this area of research and collecting. Until now, it has been a very time-consuming task to identify a mark found on a piece of trade silver. There are hundreds of books containing over 22,000 silver marks that one has to sift through in an attempt to identify a specific mark. It is now possible to quickly identify marks that might previously have taken days to identify. This book is also a good source of trade silver marks yet to be found but known to have existed, as well as marks that are found on trade silver but, as of yet, have not been identified. It should be noted that marks found on American Indian trade silver are not limited to American makers, and this book includes makers and their marks from the American colonies, New France, Canada, France, and the British Isles. Many of the silversmiths found in this book were also involved in the manufacture and maintenance of church silver, and made silver plates and other types of silver articles. To make this book more helpful, it not only includes the silversmiths themselves, but also their apprentices, partners, family members that were silversmiths, traders, and anyone else found to be associated with the marks on trade silver. Some of the marks found in this book have not yet been recorded on trade silver, but, by association, cannot be ruled out.Researching and collecting Indian trade silver is a very complex field. Owing to the market being flooded with reproductions and counterfeits, collecting trade silver without access to accurate research material is very risky. Among well qualified researchers, it is also known that this endeavor is not an exact one. With trade silver, it is common to find differing opinions on certain marks. To illustrate this dilemma, a mark as common on trade silver as "RC" for Robert Cruickshank less than 200 years ago was thought to stand for Cardinal Richelieu. Hundreds of photographs and scale illustrations have been used in this book to help make it easer to eliminate many of the counterfeit marks found in the market today. Many marks covered in this book were found in private collections, and without access to them, publishing this book would not have been possible. The feedback from Indian trade silver collectors, historians, and researchers has been very positive, and there is no doubt that this book will soon become a valuable tool for the many researchers and collectors that have not previously had a reference book dedicated to Indian trade silver marks found in the Americas. This is a work in progress, and marks are continuously being recorded for addition in the future.
Odhams
There are a number of factors, largely interrelated, attracting me to write this survey. First, there was a family connection with Odhams through my maternal grandfather. This was one of the reasons which led to me spending my formative years in Watford, the town which saw the full flourishing and the final sad demise of the firm. Not surprisingly most of the many books in our household came from Odhams. I have, over the years since childhood, amassed a collection of more than 400 of these titles. Odhams became, in its heyday, one of the country's major book, newspaper and periodical producers, at the cutting edge of printing and photogravure technology. The output of so many books from such a source is very much worth close study. As I view them again I am trying to provide an assessment of the firm's book output, as far as I know something never attempted before. The history of Odhams Press has been presented to the public twice. On the first occasion when one of the family - W.B.Odhams - covered the period from roughly 1840 to the year he retired from the management - 1935. Basically this is an autobiography, and as such has unfortunately little to do with books and deals at length with newspapers and illustrated magazines. It also has to do with personalities, notably the man who became the guiding spirit of the firm - Julius Salter Elias. The latter's biography, published under the title Viscount Southwood - in his later years Elias had been elevated to the peerage - covers the period up to his death in 1946 and begins with his first association with the firm. It, also, has little to say about book production and deals in the main with newspapers and magazines. What can now be viewed as the house's declining years up to the 1970s and the various amalgamations and take-overs, have been given general treatment, but never been chronicled in detail. In the absence of informative archive material I am making general judgements, based on just the books themselves, which may in the end be the right thing to do.

Since then, the Ashmolean has expanded its holdings of tin-glazed and related earthenwares to consolidate its position as one of the world's most important and wide-ranging collections. Among the acquisitions described here is the only known piece of Italian maiolica made for a Tudor Englishman, a plate made for Humphrey Dethick, who caused a nationwide stir in 1602 by an apparent attempt to assassinate King James VI of Scotland. The bequest from Sidney Knafel of New York has transformed the Museum's holdings of French faience; while important 16th-century maiolica comes from the collection of the late Airlie Holden-Hindley.
