Old Dog, New Dog

New World 出版
2025/04/28 出版

From two revered experts, a concise guide to caring for a beloved senior dog and skillfully introducing a puppy to the household in a way that allows both dogs to flourish It's a natural impulse: As you watch your canine best friend age, you think about getting a puppy, hoping that the new pup will be influenced by the older dog while softening the inevitable loss. But it's challenging to fully support a senior while also trying to meet the needs of a puppy. In this first-of-its-kind guide, senior dog expert Helen St. Pierre and puppy expert Kathy Callahan come together to help dog lovers navigate this terrain with joy and compassion. They'll help you: - assess your older dog's well-being and keep them comfortable and safe - decide whether it's the right time to add another dog - prepare yourself with a refresher on the basics (and the intensity) of puppy care - manage the most difficult aspects of living with both a senior and a puppy And in perhaps its most critically needed chapter, Old Dog, New Dog covers -- with honesty and empathy -- the difficult decision of when and how to say goodbye to your beloved old companion while honoring the deep friendship you'll always keep in your heart.

Plants with Purpose

2025/04/26 出版

Many gardeners in the southwest are perfectly satisfied with beautiful, ornamental plants and cultivate lush lawns despite the environmental consequences of doing so. Other gardeners, however, have moved to embrace pollinator plants that provide resources to bees and butterflies. And some have embraced the xeriscape approach, which uses indigenous plant life to minimize the need for water. But this is just the beginning. Plants with Purpose speaks to gardeners who are mindful of the environmental impact of traditional ornamental plants and offers twenty-five alternative plantings that are beautiful, viable, and functional. Whether edible, therapeutic, medicinal, or attractive to pollinators, the plants in this collection provide a pathway to a more environmentally sustainable and functional garden and landscape. From agarita (for jelly and tarts) to wild garlic (edible greens), this selection of plants is curated specifically for warm climates and are beneficial to the larger ecosystem. In addition to history and description, each plant entry provides basic information and care tips such as plant type, light/water/soil needs, size, bloom and time, fruit, and availability. Many entries contain recipes, tea ideas, and herbal remedies. This "secret life of plants" provides a counternarrative to the standard texts on gardening and landscaping. Illustrated throughout with 200 beautiful color photographs of plants in their various stages of development and showcasing their multiple applications, Plants with Purpose will encourage readers to experiment with their gardening for a deeper engagement with plant life and the environment.

The Lost Orchid

Ingram 出版
2025/04/24 出版

The forgotten story of a decades-long international quest for a rare and coveted orchid, chronicling the botanists, plant hunters, and collectors who relentlessly pursued it at great human and environmental cost. In 1818, a curious root arrived in a small English village, tucked--seemingly by accident--in a packing case mailed from Brazil. The amateur botanist who cultivated it soon realized that he had something remarkable on his hands: an exceptionally rare orchid never before seen on British shores. It arrived just as "orchid mania" was sweeping across Europe and North America, driving a vast plant trade that catered to wealthy private patrons as well as the fast-growing middle classes eager to display exotic flowers at home. Dubbed Cattleya labiata, the striking purple-and-crimson bloom quickly became one of the most coveted flowers on both continents. As tales of the flower's beauty spread through scientific journals and the popular press, orchid dealers and enthusiasts initiated a massive search to recover it in its natural habitat. Sarah Bilston illuminates the story of this international quest, introducing the collectors and nurserymen who funded expeditions, the working-class plant hunters who set out to find the flower, the South American laborers and specialists with whom they contracted, the botanists who used the latest science to study orchids in all their varieties, and the writers and artists who established the near-mythic status of the "lost orchid." The dark side of this global frenzy was the social and environmental harm it wrought, damaging fragile ecologies on which both humans and plants depended. Following the human ambitions and dramas that drove an international obsession, The Lost Orchid is a story of consumer desire, scientific curiosity, and the devastating power of colonial overreach.

The Garden Against Time

Olivia,Laing  著
W. W. Norton 出版
2025/04/24 出版

In 2020, Olivia Laing began to restore an eighteenth-century walled garden in Suffolk, an overgrown Eden of unusual plants. The work brought to light a crucial question for our age: Who gets to live in paradise, and how can we share it while there's still time? Moving between real and imagined gardens, from Milton's Paradise Lost to John Clare's enclosure elegies, from a wartime sanctuary in Italy to a grotesque aristocratic pleasure ground funded by slavery, Laing interrogates the sometimes shocking cost of making paradise on earth. But the story of the garden doesn't always enact larger patterns of privilege and exclusion. It's also a place of rebel outposts and communal dreams. From the improbable queer utopia conjured by Derek Jarman on the beach at Dungeness to the fertile vision of a common Eden propagated by William Morris, new modes of living can and have been attempted amidst the flower beds, experiments that could prove vital in the coming era of climate change. The result is a humming, glowing tapestry, a beautiful and exacting account of the abundant pleasures and possibilities of gardens: not as a place to hide from the world but as a site of encounter and discovery, bee-loud and pollen-laden.

England’s Lost Transport Heritage from the Air

Allan,Brodie  著
Ingram 出版
2025/04/22 出版

Britain was the first country in the world to industrialise and alongside new means of production, came novel forms of transport, including steam trains and steamships in the 19th century and jet aircraft and hovercrafts in the middle of the 20th century. Aerofilms, flying across the country from 1919 onwards, recorded the country's complex infrastructure of road, rail and maritime transport that was in place between the wars and the company was evolving alongside, and was part of, the new aviation industry that was being created. While flying across the country, Aerofilms' remarkable photographers also recorded how Britain communicated with its imperial territories. The collection includes images of the country's vast merchant fleet of liners and cargo vessels as well as the flying boats that formed an international network before jets came to dominate the sky. Aerofilms were there to record the first flight of the ill-fated airship, R101. Much of this interesting transport history that the company's photographers witnessed has now disappeared or has been relegated to being museum exhibits. This book uses Aerofilms' photographs to tell the story of England's lost transport heritage, from Roman roads to supersonic Concorde.
