Air transportation of critically ill patients began sporadically during World War I, but they crammed the wounded behind the pilot's area with no one to attend to them-the sick and dying patients had to fend for themselves. Lauretta Schimmoler realized this and sought to change it. She thought nurses trained in the aspects of air ambulance transport would be valuable for society. She hoped it could also benefit the military. She found nurses who believed in her cause. Some were pilots or became pilots. Dedicated nurses like Leora Stroup championed the idea when others doubted its relevance. Schimmoler understood airport management, flight school operations, aircraft manufacturing, first aid, chemical warfare, air mail transport, weather, and flight recorders. She even designed special medical equipment to fit inside small airplanes. But the various ranks scrutinized her actions because she wasn't a nurse. Schimmoler and Stroup were born, spent their childhoods, and were buried within 120 miles of each other in Ohio. Both became pilots and early members of the Ninety-Nines club. Stroup had also thought nurses should train for aerial duty even before she met Schimmoler. And Stroup had an edge on Schimmoler-she was a nurse-but Schimmoler barreled ahead despite lacking those credentials.Schimmoler expected people would see the value and appreciate what she and the nurses wanted to accomplish with this specialty they were trying to create. "Trolls are Different" is not conventional sword and sorcery but nevertheless a compelling tale about defeating enemies via "poisoned hospitality." "Chain of Command" was excellent; it is humorous and vital sword and sorcery that features a duo who evoke Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser. "Disruption of Destiny" was the most self-consciously literary story and reminded me of LeGuin's "Earthsea" short fiction. This one was quite moving. "The City of Silence" is an intriguing sword and sorcery political allegory that features an exiled king and his compassionate and loyal vizier. "Red" was a crime/quest narrative: very eclectic approach to S&S" with an accelerated ending. "The Reconstructed God" is uniquely written from the p.o.v. of a "familiar," a creature who serves a Power, usually a sorcerer; this tale one was quite atmospheric and the fantasy setting was vivid. All in all, an entertaining and fresh new anthology of sword and sorcery! Jim Pitts's cover is really distinctive; moreover, his interior illustrations are delightfully eerie, otherworldly, and evoke that "old school" charm."Also for Volume 1: "What an enjoyable book. Quality sword and sorcery stories and amazing art by Jim Pitts. The general tone of the book was dark with a few lighter tales. A couple of my favorite stories were by Steve Dilks and Adrian Cole. I would recomend this series to anyone with a love of fantasy. I will be waiting for volume 2."

On November 10, 2015, a British Aerospace HS 125-700A, N237WR, operated by Execuflight, crashed during a nonprecision localizer approach to runway 25 at Akron Fulton International Airport and impacted a four-unit apartment building in Akron, Ohio. This report discusses the November 10, 2015, accident in which a British Aerospace HS 125-700A, N237WR, registered to Rais Group International NC LLC and operated by Execuflight, departed controlled flight while on a nonprecision localizer approach to runway 25 at Akron Fulton International Airport and impacted a four-unit apartment building in Akron, Ohio. The captain, first officer, and seven passengers died; no one on the ground was injured. The airplane was destroyed by impact forces and postcrash fire. Safety issues discussed in this report relate to a lack of a requirement for flight data monitoring programs for 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 135 operators, a lack of a requirement for safety management system programs for 14 CFR Part 135 operators, a lack of a nonprecision approach procedure for Hawker 700- and 800-series airplanes that meets stabilized approach criteria and defines "landing assured," a lack of a requirement for flight crew training on the continuous descent final approach technique, inaccuracy of data entered into weight-and-balance software, inadequate Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) surveillance of Part 135 operators, and inadequate cockpit voice recorder maintenance procedures. Safety recommendations are addressed to the FAA, Textron Aviation, and Hawker 700- and 800-series training centers.
