AIR CRASH INVESTIGATIONS - THE BOEING 737 MAX DISASTER (PART 2) - The Crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302
On March 10, 2019, at 05:38 UTC, Ethiopian Airlines flight 302, Boeing 737-8 (MAX), ET-AVJ, took off as a scheduled international flight, from Addis Ababa Bole International Airport bound to Nairobi, Kenya. It departed Addis Ababa with 157 persons on board: 2 flight crew (a Captain and a First Officer), 5 cabin crew and one IFSO, 149 regular passengers. The take-off roll and lift-off was normal, including normal values of left and right angle-of-attack (AOA). Shortly after liftoff, the left Angle of Attack sensor recorded value became erroneous and the left stick shaker activated and remained active until near the end of the recording. In addition, the airspeed and altitude values from the left air data system began deviating from the corresponding right side values. The left and right recorded AOA values began deviating. At 5:40:22, the second automatic nose-down trim activated. Following nose-down trim activation GPWS DON'T SINK sounded for 3 seconds and "PULL UP" also displayed on PFD for 3 seconds. The Captain was unable to maintain the flight path and requested to return back to the departure airport. At 05:43:21, an automatic nose-down trim activated for about 5 s. The stabilizer moved from 2.3 to 1 unit. The rate of climb decreased followed by a descent in 3 s after the automatic trim activation. The descent rate and the airspeed continued increasing. Computed airspeed values reached 500kt, pitch and descent rate values were greater than 33,000 ft/min. Finally; both recorders stopped recording at around 05: 44 the Aircraft impacted terrain 28 NM South East of Addis Ababa near Ejere. All 157 persons on board: 2 flight crew, 5 cabin crew and one IFSO, and 149 regular passengers were fatally injured. The crash of Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 was, after the crash of Lion Air Flight 610 on October 29, 2018, the second crash of a Boeing 737 MAX 8 within a period of 4 months.

As aircraft wrecks become much older, their historical significance becomes much greater. It is hoped by many modern day aviation archaeologists that with more public awareness, the historical significance becomes better understood and valued, and that many of these old crash sites will be saved and protected. Most surviving family members of those who lost their lives in these accidents consider these sites as hallowed ground and the mention of these to surviving crewmembers themselves still brings tears to their eyes. Recently, it has become fairly common for surviving family members to contact aviation archaeology groups in an effort to locate crash sites to help bring some type of closure to these families. As a group, we have been successful in making these connections, and in expressing our gratitude in helping with this effort, many aviation archaeologists have spent a lot of their own money, time, and research establishing and building memorials at these sites. Aircraft Wrecks of the Pacific Northwest
This second volume reports the findings of aviation wreckologists to examine the crash sites of military and civilian aircraft in the Pacific Northwest. There are 36 chapters, each covering an aircraft crash, the search and rescue efforts of each, what happened to the pilots and crews, and present day examination of the sites and remains of the aircraft. Aircraft wreck hunting better known as "Wreckchasing" among its thousands of new enthusiasts is a budding hobby throughout the entire United States and many European countries today. There has always been a strong interest in aviation but the intrigue with old historical aircraft is bringing that interest to the deserts and mountains in search of the remains of rare old aircraft that are seldom seen anymore. Some efforts have been made in the past to recover and restore some of these rare old aircraft wrecks for museums and back to flying status, but new efforts are being made to declare these as historical artifacts and preserve the remains on site. Wreckchasing groups have been formed throughout every geographical area within the United States as well as groups of trained aviation archaeologists banding together in an effort to preserve that part of our history and hopefully generate public interest to protect these old sites. Many of our best friends have been made through wreck hunting but most importantly, bringing some type of closure to surviving family members of those lost in some of these tragic accidents makes our wreck hunting efforts absolutely worthwhile. What is sometimes a fun adventure can other times be a long grueling hardship of spending weeks climbing high snow covered mountains and hiking miles of hot desert country in searches that turn up nothing. Other times with good luck and especially good planning, the efforts can be very rewarding noting that seldom though are any of these wreck hunts ever very easy which is why the wrecks are still there. The operation was doomed from the beginning and lasted from December 1993 to February 1994. The concept was a brilliant idea that could have been successful had some critical mistakes had not been made. What happened during the three months of operation were stories of adventure, bravery, comedy, intrigue, loyalty and teamwork. The Emma C. Berry is celebrating her 150th birthday this year. She has resided at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut for nearly a third of her life, restored to how the shipwrights and craftsmen built her in 1866 in Noank, just a few miles down the Mystic River.During her first hundred years she led an interesting and varied life as she traveled up and down the Atlantic coast. Prior to arriving back on the Mystic River, Emma was a fishing smack, a lobster and fishing schooner, a freightvessel and pleasure yacht.In 1973 I inherited and became the caretaker of F. Slade Dale's black and white photo and negative collection. Slade became Emma's owner in 1931 and had kept her afloat, sometimes barely, for nearly forty years until he donated her to Mystic Seaport in 1967. He was one of the great yachtsmen of his generation, and combined his love of the water with a successful business in the sales, docking and maintenance of boats in Bay Head, New Jersey. During his ownership of Emma, she was used for sailing with his friends, and on two occasions she hauled cargo for his boat business. The Crash of Delta Flight 723
At the height of the Watergate scandal, Delta Flight 723 crashed into a fog-shrouded seawall at the end of Runway 4R at Logan Airport in Boston. While this incident and Watergate seemed unrelated at first, President Richard Nixon and his subordinates' actions during Watergate interfered with the ability of the National Transportation Safety Board to properly investigate the crash. It wasn't until three court cases, a federal investigation, congressional hearings, as well as a state investigation, when the true cause of the accident was exposed ten years later. This is also the story of Air Force Sergeant Leopold Chouinard and his incredible fight for survival. Chouinard survived the initial impact of the crash, only to suffer third and fourth degree burns on the majority of his body. Doctors fought against incredible odds to try and save Chouinard's life. For 134 days, Leo Chouinard defied all expectations as his doctors and nurses applied the latest advancements in burn treatments to save him from a non-survivable accident. They nearly succeeded. TM 9-230-289-20 CUCV Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle Unit Maintenance Manual January 1988
The CUCV or Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle is a US Military vehicle based on readily available commercial trucks. Originally intended to augment the purpose-built, but expensive GAMA Goat 6x6 and older Jeeps. The first generation was based on Dodge / Chrysler trucks. This book is focused on the M1008 series second generation CUCV which was General Motor's first major light-truck military vehicle production since World War II. They began production in 1984 and ended production in 1996 with most units being produced as 1984 model year units. Later production was focused on replacements for existing CUCV's. The majority of units were built from existing heavy duty light truck commercial parts. The M1009 was an upgraded/up-rated Chevy K5 Blazer with a 3/4 ton capacity. The M1008 series trucks were a 1-1/4 ton or 5/4 ton rated truck. In all 70,000 units were produced with three power trains. This manual is the Unit Maintenance Manual for these vehicles.
