Modern Ikebana
Since its origins in the sixth-century, ikebana has been as much a philosophy as an art, with its roots in Zen Buddism and a reverence for nature. Over hundreds of years it has developed a complex set of unwritten rules, that take a lifetime to master. But in recent years the distinctive look of ikebana - with its love of the asymmetric shapes to be found in nature and its willingness to embrace simple, natural materials - has found a new audience and opened the eyes of a generation of artists to a new way of working with flowers. This book showcases a selection of this new wave of floral artists, from Tokyo to New York. The authors Victoria Gaiger and Tom Loxley - the editors of the award-winning rakesprogress, the UK's leading independent magazine about the art of gardens, plants and flowers - have talked to the most exciting young florists working today about their art and inspiration. It includes an introduction to the history and evolution of Japanese floral art and an illustrated glossary of flowers and plants.Contents: Introduction, Modern Masters, Floral Contemporary, Punkebana, Floral Sculptors, Illustrated Glossary of Flowers and Plants, Bibliography.

Preserving Our Roots
For over four decades, John Coykendall's passion has been preserving the farm heritage of a small community in rural southeastern Louisiana. A Tennessee native and longtime master gardener at Blackberry Farm, Coykendall has become a celebrity in a growing movement that places a premium on farm-to-table cuisine with locally sourced, organic, and heirloom foods and flavors. While his work takes him around the world searching for seeds and the cultural knowledge of how to grow them, what inspires him most is his annual pilgrimage to Louisiana. Drawn to the Washington Parish area as a college student, Coykendall forged long-lasting friendships with local farmers and gardeners. Over the decades, he has recorded oral histories, recipes, tall tales, agricultural knowledge, and wisdom from generations past in more than eighty illustrated and handwritten journals. At the same time, he has unearthed and safeguarded rare varieties of food crops once grown in the area, then handed them back to the community. In Preserving Our Roots: My Journey to Save Seeds and Stories, Coykendall shares a wealth of materials collected in his journals, ensuring they are passed on to future generations. Organized by season, the book offers a narrative chronicle of Coykendall's visits to Washington Parish since 1973. He highlights staple crops, agricultural practices, and favorite recipes from the families and friends who have hosted him. Accompanied by a rich selection of drawings, journal pages, and photographs--along with over forty recipes--Preserving Our Roots chronicles Coykendall's passion for recording foods and narratives that capture the rhythms of daily life on farms, in kitchens, and across generations.

The Bouquets of Chenonceau
The impressive Ch璽teau de Chenonceau is the jewel of the French Loire Valley. The fairytale type castle has had a particularly rich history and has always been inhabited and curated by intelligent, strong-willed women such as Catherine Bri癟onnet, Diane de Potiers, Catherine de Medici and Louise de Lorraine - hence its nickname 'Ladies' Castle'. Through the ages the spaces have been imprinted with the souls of those who built, inhabited and loved the castle. Every part of Chenonceau's interior and exterior - not in the least the castle's impressive gardens - exudes peace, harmony and elegance. Since 2015 Jean-Francois Boucher has been appointed floral scenographer of the estate. Together with his small team he creates new floral compositions for the castle's rooms every week. These 'staged' flowers emphasize the history of the estate just like any other piece of art or furniture does. Their designs blend in perfectly with the interiors and are in beautiful harmony with the room's color codes, perfumes and functions. Sometimes they even wink at poetry, art or the historical events that took place in these spaces. The Bouquets of Chenonceau is a magnificent coffee table book that will please both lovers of history and fans of floral design. Text in English and French.

Wedding Flowers
This book is for everyone who loves flowers and wants to take on a wedding for themselves, a family member or a friend. I like to think I have explained the techniques and skills that will be needed using language that is easy to understand, equipment that is easy to source and flowers that, on the whole, won't cost a fortune. Many of the designs, particularly in section one - Flowers for the Venue - can be arranged for other special occasions such as anniversaries. I have used a star system for each step-by-step design. With regard to the skills required, one star means that the design is straightforward, two that it's a little more difficult and three that you will really have to concentrate. As for the mechanics, the stars refer to how easy it is to find the equipment to recreate a similar display. I have tried to keep the components as simple as possible, but remember - with the internet, most things are readily available these days. The images in the book have been created by me and my team at the Flower School, together with my teachers, former students and friends in the business. Many of my students have returned to their homes in different parts of the world and gone on to create bridal work second to none. Arranging flowers for a wedding is bound to be stressful, because they have to be perfect, but when the day is over the feeling of achievement and fulfilment is incredible and you will be all set for the next one. Be sure to take photographs so you can remind yourself just how well you have done. Judith Blacklock

A Step-by-step Guide to a Florida Native Yard
More and more Florida residents are deciding to replace highly fertilized, over-watered, pesticide-dependent lawns with native plants. They want to reduce their carbon footprints; save time, water, and money; and attract birds and butterflies. But where to begin? This illustrated guide helps readers get started creating new outdoor spaces that are both sustainable and beautiful. Taking the common 1/3-acre lot as an example, Ginny Stibolt and Marjorie Shropshire provide a sample layout for a basic native plant landscape. They use a grid system that allows gardeners to work on their yards in small sections instead of trying to revamp the entire landscape at once. And they break down the process into individual steps, making it manageable even for beginners. The first step is assessing your property and choosing which plants to keep and which to remove. Next, the book discusses how to handle rainwater, introduce trees, install a butterfly garden, use native plants as screening, make an outdoor "room" for entertaining, build wild areas into the landscape, and plan a smart maintenance program that relies on certain plants to keep boundaries neat and incorporates natural weed control. By following these methods, anyone can convert all or part of their yard into a more natural area without using pesticides or artificial fertilizers, which will save money and help support wildlife. Complete with detailed diagrams and lists of suggested plants for each step, this guide will help readers set up an environmentally-friendly habitat and give them the time and peace of mind to enjoy it.

The Northwest Garden Manifesto
A primer for growing a beautiful, healthy, wildlife-friendly, and sustainable garden Science-based advice from the author's three decades of experience with his four-acre garden Lays out earth-healthy principles and explains how to work towards them Gardens are extensions of our homes, places in which we get outside to relax, entertain, and get some physical exercise. But our gardens are also extensions of the natural world. Through our gardens, as well as other neighborhood greenspaces, we can help counter some of the woes faced by larger environments: rampant development, loss of plant and animal habitat, spread of invasive species, exploitation of natural resources, air and water pollution, and the impacts of global warming. Yes, even small urban backyard landscapes can combat such man-made strains on our local environment--and it's easy to do! In his new book, The Northwest Garden Manifesto, scientist and gardener John J. Albers provides a comprehensive guide to encourage and enable homeowners to consider the local ecosystem in their own gardens, and in their larger communities. The ideas and concepts in this book reflect the most up-to-date thinking on urban ecology and how to best make our yards reflect the natural world around us. The key to Albers's approach is for gardeners to first assess the current state of their property and then focus on the following key principles: 1. Protect, conserve, and create healthy soil 2. Maintain healthy plants and create a sustainable landscape 3. Conserve water and other natural resources 4. Protect water and air quality 5. Protect and enhance wildlife habitat 6. Conserve energy 7. Use sustainable methods and materials Through clear explanation, practical examples, and full-color photos, Albers shows how to evaluate any yard in terms of these principles and then challenges the reader to improve each element, one step at a time. From creating better soil to starting a compost pile, attracting pollinators to adding more native plants, or creating a simple circulating water feature to building a fence from recycled wood--gardeners will ultimately turn their backyards into beautiful, healthy, and happy habitat for all.
