Beyond Inheritance

Riverhead 出版
2025/07/21 出版

"Constantly fascinating and impeccably reported...You won't look at yourself in the same way again." --Ed Yong, bestselling author of An Immense World and I Contain Multitudes A captivating exploration of the remarkable ways our DNA mutates over the course of our lives, with radical implications for the future of medicine Our DNA is the indispensable set of instructions that guides our growth and vitality. The common misconception is that this molecular blueprint stays the same throughout our lives. In reality, the genetic makeup of our cells is continuously mutating, from the moment we are conceived until our last breath. The hidden changes that amass in our genomes can have a huge influence on our health. In this groundbreaking book, science writer Roxanne Khamsi describes our bodies as active landscapes of mutation. She reveals how the forces of Darwinian evolution operate within our own tissues. The effects can be devastating, such as when mutant blood cells outcompete their normal counterparts and increase the risk of heart attacks. But mutations can also make our bodies more resilient: Liver cells with genetic changes seem to cope better with excess calories. And immune cells with remixed DNA can make more effective antibodies against the microbes that threaten us. By letting go of the antiquated idea that every cell in a body has the same exact DNA, we can usher in a whole new era of medicine, including better vaccines and treatments that outsmart cancer. Beyond Inheritance will open your eyes to the immense genetic diversity that exists within you and its incredible potential to shape your well-being.

Modern Approaches to Teaching Fundamental Medical Biological Sciences

60% of students rated the level of preparation in this area of education as "good", 10% as "excellent" and 30% as "satisfactory".However, 35% of employers (heads of special educational institutions) believe that graduates should work independently to improve the knowledge, qualifications and skills they have acquired at higher educational institutions; 44% consider the volume of knowledge acquired to be insufficient, and 51% note the lack of competence in applying the knowledge gained in special education methods and correctional and developmental work in practice. The above examples indicate the need to increase the effectiveness of introducing new, scientifically based methods of training defectologists (bachelor and master's degrees).

A new approach to combat climate change in developing countries part1

Climate change represents one of the most pressing challenges of our time, with its impacts increasingly visible in the form of rising temperatures, extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and shifting ecosystems. While its consequences are global, developing countries face a disproportionate burden. Limited financial resources, inadequate infrastructure, and greater vulnerability to environmental stresses compound the difficulties these nations encounter in responding effectively to climate threats. This book presents a new, pragmatic approach to combating climate change in developing countries-an approach grounded in equity, innovation, and sustainable development. It explores how tailored strategies, community-led solutions, and locally adapted technologies can drive climate resilience while simultaneously addressing socio-economic needs. Recognizing the limitations of traditional mitigation and adaptation models, this work proposes a framework that integrates climate action with poverty alleviation, food security, energy access, and environmental justice.in this book advocates for shifting the global climate narrative-from one of vulnerability to one of opportunity. He emphasizes that developing countries can become leaders in innovative, sustainable climate solutions if given equitable support.

Viral Hepatitis in Asia and the Pacific

Jing,Sun  著
Academic Press 出版
2025/07/17 出版

Viral Hepatitis in Asia and the Pacific: Towards Elimination as a Public Health Threat documents the narratives, innovations, and scope of work in the Asia-Pacific region in starting, consolidating, and moving towards the elimination of viral hepatitis. The Asia-Pacific region is disproportionately affected by viral hepatitis, accounting for two-thirds of the global burden. Countries from low-, middle- and high-income economies have adopted different strategies to address combating and eliminating viral hepatitis. The successful experiences of the Asia-Pacific region are valuable for other regions, especially the middle- and low-income countries moving towards the achievement of the 2030 goal of elimination. Strategies discussed include integrated approaches, negotiating universal access to diagnostics, and treatment options, including vaccines. Content further covers the critical barriers to achieve the 2030 targets for elimination of viral hepatitis and how to overcome them. This is the perfect reference for all hepatology researchers and elimination policy advocates who are dedicated to joining the fight for the 2030 goal of the elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat.

Novel Approaches in Mycotoxins Research

Mdpi AG 出版
2025/07/17 出版

Mycotoxins-harmful compounds produced by fungi-pose serious threats to food safety and public health. This Special Issue compiles research addressing their detection, toxic effects, and mitigation. Studies have revealed that Fusarium verticillioides resists fumonisins through ceramide synthase overexpression (FUM18), and a new HPLC-FLD method now allows precise OTA measurement in mouse brain and intestine tissues. In the past, Mycotoxin contamination in hops used for brewing was widespread, though controlled storage limited some risks. Since then, machine learning models have emerged as promising tools for rapid detection, albeit with reproducibility challenges. Protective agents like quercetin, fermented whey, and plant polyphenols (e.g., catechin, epicatechin) have also demonstrated the ability to counteract mycotoxin toxicity, and research has shown that mycotoxins' stability in food varies over time and that co-ingestion factors like milk can alter absorption. The combined toxicity of mycotoxins with compounds like acrylamide may increase neurological risks, highlighting the need for deeper investigation. Despite progress, significant gaps remain in assessing human exposure, developing validated biomarkers, and using advanced human-relevant models, emphasizing the need for interdisciplinary efforts to improve risk assessment and mitigation.

Mupirocin Resistant MRSA - A New Threat in Management

Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic used to treat superficial skin infections and to control spread of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The existence of mupirocin resistance among MRSA isolates is cause for concern since there are not many effective alternatives for mupirocin resistant strains. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics has led to the development of antibiotic resistant strains for commonly used antibiotics. Thus, a detailed study is required with regard to proper antibiotic usage and susceptibility testing, irrespective of the organisms isolated from samples to find out the resistance patterns. Hence, we believe that our study will provide information to Clinicians in prescribing effective and appropriate antimicrobial agents against a very important hospital acquired infection such as MRSA to help improve the health care system.

Gamete Biology

S K,Gupta  著
2025/07/16 出版

In recent years, impressive progress has been made in the biochemical and molecular characterization of both the spermatozoon and the oocyte. The use of animal models with genetic mutations or "knocked-out" genes has enhanced our understanding of the growth, development and function of the male and female gamete. Significant progress also has been made in elucidating the cellular and molecular basis of the sperm-egg interaction leading to fertilization. These recent findings will hopefully enable the development of both more appropriate treatment strategies for overcoming infertility and novel contraceptives.
