Handbook for Developing Watershed Plans to Restore and Protect Our Waters

2025/07/22 出版

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was introduced on December 2, 1970 by President Richard Nixon. The agency is charged with protecting human health and the environment, by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress. The EPA's struggle to protect health and the environment is seen through each of its official publications. These publications outline new policies, detail problems with enforcing laws, document the need for new legislation, and describe new tactics to use to solve these issues. This collection of publications ranges from historic documents to reports released in the new millennium, and features works like: Bicycle for a Better Environment, Health Effects of Increasing Sulfur Oxides Emissions Draft, and Women and Environmental Health. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Forecasting Advective Sea Fog With the Use of Classification and Regression Tree Analyses for Kunsan Air Base

2025/07/22 出版

Advective sea fog frequently plagues Kunsan Air Base (AB), Republic of Korea, in the spring and summer seasons. It is responsible for a variety of impacts on military operations, the greatest being to aviation. To date, there are no suitable methods developed for forecasting advective sea fog at Kunsan, primarily due to a lack of understanding of sea fog formation under various synoptic situations over the Yellow Sea. This work explored the feasibility of predicting sea fog development with a 24-hour forecast lead time. Before exploratory data analysis was performed, a geographical introduction to the region was provided along with a discussion of basic elements of fog formation, the physical properties of fog droplets, and its dissipation. Examined in this work were data sets of Kunsan surface observations, upstream upper air data, sea surface temperatures over the Yellow Sea, and modeled analyses of gridded data over the Yellow Sea. A complete ten year period of record was examined for inclusion into data mining models to find predictive patterns. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Geology and Nonfuel Mineral Deposits of Greenland, Europe, Russia, and Northern Central Asia

2025/07/22 出版

This report summarizes the geology and nonfuel mineral resources of Greenland, Europe, Russia, and Northern Central Asia and is a preliminary part of a major U.S. Geological Survey study called the Global Mineral Resource Assessment Project. This report is one of a series of regional reports covering the world and provides basic data on the identified resources and geologic setting, together with a brief appraisal of the potential for undiscovered mineral resources. The data in the regional report are derived from published information. An important source of data on production statistics, economic factors that affect the mineral industries, and historical information, is available in U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) publications Minerals Yearbook and the annual Mineral Commodity Summaries (available at http: //minerals.usgs.gov/minerals). In terms of production of metallic commodities and industrial minerals in recent years (U.S. Geological Survey, 2003, 2004, 2005), Greenland, the countries comprising Europe and Northern Central Asia, and Russia were major or moderate producers of aluminum, antimony, arsenic, asbestos, barite, bentonite boron, chromium, cobalt, copper, diamond, diatomite, feldspar, fluorspar, gemstones, gold, graphite, gypsum indium, iron ore, iron ore, kaolin, kyanite, lead, lithium, magnesium, mercury, mica (sheet), molybdenum, nickel, perlite, phosphate, platinum-group metals, potash, pumice, rare-earth metals, salt, silicon, silver, sulfur, tin, titanium, and zinc. A recurrent theme of this report is that mineral resources are associated with large-scale geologic processes that reoccur in time and space. The geologic distribution of mineral resources is intimately related to the geologic history of host rocks and structures. Increased knowledge about the geologic fabric around deposits and the processes that control the regional and local distribution of mineral resources will lead to improvement in predicting the location of new deposits. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work was reproduced from the original artifact, and remains as true to the original work as possible. Positive Tipping Points

2025/07/21 出版

We can all play a part in triggering positive tipping points that accelerate us out of the climate crisis. How do we get out of a climate crisis of our own making? As global change escalates, we are already starting to experience damaging tipping points in the social, ecological and climate systems that we depend upon - and much worse is to come. These shocks tell us we have left it too late for incremental change to save us: we need to change course fast to avoid the worst, yet we are acting far too slowly. Our supposed leaders appear paralysed by the complexity of the situation or, worse still, determined to maintain the status quo. This is leading to increasing despair, especially among young people. At the same time, hopeful signs of change are also growing fast. The climate movement, the spread of electric vehicles, and the rise of renewable energy are all examples of change accelerating in the right direction. They have all passed tipping points where their uptake becomes self-propelling, taking the status quo by surprise - and they are spreading worldwide. To get ourselves out of trouble in time, we need more of these positive tipping points towards global sustainability, which eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, reverse the destruction of nature, and promote social justice. This book identifies the positive tipping points that can help us avoid the worst from damaging tipping points. It takes the reader on a journey through understanding how tipping points happen, showing how tipping points have transformed human societies in the past, and facing up to the profound risks that climate tipping points pose to us all now. Then, it offers hope and empowerment in a series of uplifting examples of social and technological changes that started small but are already spreading rapidly to transform our societies to a more sustainable state. It identifies the positive tipping points that are still needed, the forces that are opposing them, and the actions that can trigger them, showing how we can all play a part in triggering positive tipping points that accelerate us out of the climate crisis.

Integrated Land and Water Resources Management in a Canal Command

2025/07/19 出版

The water supply in the Hirakud canal command (Eastern India) is not adequate to meet the irrigation requirement of non-monsoon crops. On annual basis, the canal water supply is able to meet only 54% of the irrigation demand at 90% probability of exceedance (PE) level. Hence, in order to mitigate the irrigation water deficit, groundwater is considered as a supplemental source. Quasi-three-dimensional groundwater flow simulation by Visual MODFLOW was undertaken to study the groundwater behaviour. Further, combined simulation-optimization modelling was undertaken to determine the maximum permissible groundwater pumpage. An optimal land and water resources allocation model was then developed to determine the optimal cropping pattern realizing the maximum net annual return. The modelling results suggested that the net annual returns from the area can be increased by 51.3 and 12.5% at 10 and 90% PE levels, respectively, by adopting optimal cropping patterns and optimal pumping strategies. The adoption of optimal cropping patterns and optimal pumping strategies is strongly recommended for sustainable management of available land and water resources of the canal command.

Health in the City

2025/07/19 出版

Urban planning strategies have profound implications for public well-being, influencing factors such as air quality, access to green spaces, and the inclusivity of public spaces. Existing research emphasizes the importance of incorporating health considerations into urban planning to address challenges such as pollution, stress, and social inequities. A comprehensive scoping review was conducted, focusing on peer-reviewed articles published between 2010 and 2023. The review process involved a systematic search across multiple databases, yielding an initial retrieval of 1,200 articles. After screening for relevance and conducting a full-text review, 20 key articles were selected for the final analysis. These articles were assessed for their methodological approaches, findings, and alignment with the SDGs. The review highlighted several critical themes. For example, 30% of the reviewed studies (6 out of 20) emphasized the detrimental impact of heavy metal pollution on public health, with a particular focus on urban areas like Ankara. Another 25% (5 out of 20) of the studies underscored the importance of green spaces in enhancing well-being in low- and middle-income countries.

Agro Forestrium Best Plants & Trees To Prevent Catastrophic Landslides Plus Strengthen Soil Structure

2025/07/18 出版

Landslides are a type of natural disaster that involve the downward movement of a mass of soil, rocks, and debris on a slope or hillside. They can occur in various forms, such as rockfalls, rockslides, mudslides, or debris flows, depending on the materials involved and the velocity of movement.Landslides are typically triggered by a combination of factors, including heavy rainfall, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, erosion, changes in groundwater level, slope instability, or human activities such as construction and deforestation. These factors can weaken the stability of the slope, causing it to fail and result in the movement of materials downslope. The destructive power of landslides can be significant, as they can damage or destroy structures, roads, and infrastructure in their path. They can also lead to loss of life and cause severe environmental damage, particularly when they occur in populated areas or near water bodies. To mitigate the risks associated with landslides, various measures can be taken, including slope stabilization techniques, land-use planning to avoid vulnerable areas, early warning systems, and emergency preparedness. It is important for communities living in landslide-prone areas to be aware of the potential hazards and take appropriate precautions to minimize the impact of such events. Certain plants and trees can play a role in preventing landslides by stabilizing slopes and reducing soil erosion.

MODFLOW-2005, the U.S. Geological Survey Modular Ground-Water Model - Documentation of Shared Node Local Grid Refinement (LGR) and the Boundary Flow and Head (BFH) Package

2025/07/17 出版

This report documents the addition of shared node Local Grid Refinement (LGR) to MODFLOW-2005, the U.S. Geological Survey modular, transient, three-dimensional, finite-difference ground-water flow model. LGR provides the capability to simulate ground-water flow using one block-shaped higher-resolution local grid (a child model) within a coarser-grid parent model. LGR accomplishes this by iteratively coupling two separate MODFLOW-2005 models such that heads and fluxes are balanced across the shared interfacing boundary. LGR can be used in two-and three-dimensional, steady-state and transient simulations and for simulations of confined and unconfined ground-water systems. Traditional one-way coupled telescopic mesh refinement (TMR) methods can have large, often undetected, inconsistencies in heads and fluxes across the interface between two model grids. The iteratively coupled shared-node method of LGR provides a more rigorous coupling in which the solution accuracy is controlled by convergence criteria defined by the user. In realistic problems, this can result in substantially more accurate solutions and require an increase in computer processing time. The rigorous coupling enables sensitivity analysis, parameter estimation, and uncertainty analysis that reflects conditions in both model grids. This report describes the method used by LGR, evaluates LGR accuracy and performance for two- and three-dimensional test cases, provides input instructions, and lists selected input and output files for an example problem. It also presents the Boundary Flow and Head (BFH) Package, which allows the child and parent models to be simulated independently using the boundary conditions obtained through the iterative process of LGR.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. How Should the Department of Defense Approach Environmental Security Implications of Climate Change

2025/07/17 出版

Environmental Security (ES) is a process for analyzing and responding to those environmental issues caused by anthropogenically driven environmental degradation. Climate change is a major ES threat having the potential to affect U.S. national security and thus has significant impact for the military national defense mission. This paper considers the most up-to-date climate change projections published by the IPCC, NASA, and the U.S. Global Change Program along with the latest national strategic guidance in order to determine actions required by the DoD. An overwhelming number of greenhouse models indicate considerable changes will affect U.S. national security during the mid 21st century. In addition, the study shows the DoD is currently at the onset of strategically organizing itself to analyze climate change impacts, provide combatant commanders with relevant mission preparedness information, and assess impacts to U.S. military installations of rising sea level/extreme weather events. Therefore, this study makes the following four recommendations: (1) ES must be a national security component, (2) DoD must establish an activity dedicated to develop ES related strategy, (3) Climate change data should be incorporated into a yearly Intelligence Environmental Estimate, (4) USJFCOM should take the lead in developing climate change related training scenarios. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Assessing Water Security in the Amu Darya River Basin, Afghanistan

2025/07/17 出版

New data and previous studies were used with quantitative analysis to assess Afghanistan's effect on water security in the Amu Darya river basin from 1995 to 2005. An event database constructed from open source news reporting and a geographic information system (GIS) of the basin combined to evaluate the basin's risk for water-related conflict relative to six factors: overall relations; population density, per capita income; freshwater treaty status; internationalization potential of the basin; and water development projects. The thesis evaluated the quantitative techniques employed for their utility in planning, executing, and assessing military operations in relation to water resources. Afghanistan's effect on water security marginally increased the risk of conflict over water while increasing non-water-related levels of cooperation among riparian neighbors. Population density and internationalization potential did not contribute to increased risk, but income level, treaty status, and development projects did contribute to increased risk for conflict. The techniques demonstrated their utility for military planners, principally at the operational and strategic levels as a tool for long-range assessment and monitoring. Tactical utility was found to be limited, but modifications to database and GIS layer development show potential for more use of the techniques in the tactical environment. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
