Assessing Water Security in the Amu Darya River Basin, Afghanistan

2025/07/17 出版

New data and previous studies were used with quantitative analysis to assess Afghanistan's effect on water security in the Amu Darya river basin from 1995 to 2005. An event database constructed from open source news reporting and a geographic information system (GIS) of the basin combined to evaluate the basin's risk for water-related conflict relative to six factors: overall relations; population density, per capita income; freshwater treaty status; internationalization potential of the basin; and water development projects. The thesis evaluated the quantitative techniques employed for their utility in planning, executing, and assessing military operations in relation to water resources. Afghanistan's effect on water security marginally increased the risk of conflict over water while increasing non-water-related levels of cooperation among riparian neighbors. Population density and internationalization potential did not contribute to increased risk, but income level, treaty status, and development projects did contribute to increased risk for conflict. The techniques demonstrated their utility for military planners, principally at the operational and strategic levels as a tool for long-range assessment and monitoring. Tactical utility was found to be limited, but modifications to database and GIS layer development show potential for more use of the techniques in the tactical environment. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. MODFLOW-2005, the U.S. Geological Survey Modular Ground-Water Model - Documentation of Shared Node Local Grid Refinement (LGR) and the Boundary Flow and Head (BFH) Package

2025/07/17 出版

This report documents the addition of shared node Local Grid Refinement (LGR) to MODFLOW-2005, the U.S. Geological Survey modular, transient, three-dimensional, finite-difference ground-water flow model. LGR provides the capability to simulate ground-water flow using one block-shaped higher-resolution local grid (a child model) within a coarser-grid parent model. LGR accomplishes this by iteratively coupling two separate MODFLOW-2005 models such that heads and fluxes are balanced across the shared interfacing boundary. LGR can be used in two-and three-dimensional, steady-state and transient simulations and for simulations of confined and unconfined ground-water systems. Traditional one-way coupled telescopic mesh refinement (TMR) methods can have large, often undetected, inconsistencies in heads and fluxes across the interface between two model grids. The iteratively coupled shared-node method of LGR provides a more rigorous coupling in which the solution accuracy is controlled by convergence criteria defined by the user. In realistic problems, this can result in substantially more accurate solutions and require an increase in computer processing time. The rigorous coupling enables sensitivity analysis, parameter estimation, and uncertainty analysis that reflects conditions in both model grids. This report describes the method used by LGR, evaluates LGR accuracy and performance for two- and three-dimensional test cases, provides input instructions, and lists selected input and output files for an example problem. It also presents the Boundary Flow and Head (BFH) Package, which allows the child and parent models to be simulated independently using the boundary conditions obtained through the iterative process of LGR.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative

University P 出版
2025/07/17 出版

The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative (GoMRI) was a ten-year, $500 million research program to investigate the impacts of oil, dispersed oil, and dispersants on the ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster. Research institutions in the Gulf region and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency (NOAA) worked together to conduct applied and comprehensive scientific research on the Gulf of Mexico. GoMRI left behind a substantial body of scientific knowledge about oil spills and strengthened scientific capacity to respond to such calamities. In The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative: A Vision for Twenty-First-Century Science, Justin Shapiro writes the history of GoMRI and its role in organizing and facilitating a large-scale scientific response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Chapters in the book highlight the significance of the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative in the history of maritime oil spills and outlines its mission. Subsequent chapters discuss GoMRI's adaptive management structure, transparent data policies, and extensive outreach efforts in the Gulf region. Finally, Shapiro emphasizes GoMRI's comprehensive synthesis of oil spill science and its impact on future scientific responses to major disasters. For this in-depth investigation, Shapiro spent years corresponding with the GoMRI Research Board, scientists who received funding from the Initiative, and other actors who played important roles in its history. Shapiro also provides insights into how a similar scientific initiative might be organized to improve society's ability to understand and act in the aftermath of ecological catastrophes. The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative serves as both a work of history and an instruction manual that can guide responses to future disasters.

At Every Depth

Tessa,Hill  著
2025/07/17 出版

Winner, 2024 Choice Outstanding Academic Title The world's oceans are changing at a drastic pace. Beneath the waves and along the coasts, climate change and environmental degradation have spurred the most radical transformations in human history. In response, the people who know the ocean most intimately are taking action for the sake of our shared future. Community scientists track species in California tidepools. Researchers dive into the waters around Sydney to replant kelp forests. Scientists and First Nations communities collaborate to restore clam gardens in the Pacific Northwest. In At Every Depth, the oceanographer Tessa Hill and the science journalist Eric Simons profile these and other efforts to understand and protect marine environments, taking readers to habitats from shallow tidepools to the deep sea. They delve into the many human connections to the ocean--how people live with and make their living from the waters--journeying to places as far-flung as coral reefs, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and the Arctic and Antarctic poles. At Every Depth shares the stories of people from all walks of life, including scientists, coastal community members, Indigenous people, shellfish farmers, and fisheries workers. It brings together varied viewpoints, showing how scientists' research and local and Indigenous knowledge can complement each other to inform a more sustainable future. Poignantly written and grounded in science, this book offers a narrative perspective on the changing oceans, letting us see how our relationships to the oceans are changing too.

Governing Climate Mobility in Africa

2025/07/16 出版

Available open access digitally under CC BY NC ND licence. Climate change is often understood as a main driver of human mobility in Africa, but this book demonstrates the many other factors that also come into play in households織 mobility practices including those linked to gender, finance and livelihoods. Using case studies from Ethiopia and Ghana, the edited collection reveals how the two countries' governance structures play significant roles in shaping households' agency and mobility options. It shows that mobility has long been practised in both countries and is important for households' livelihoods and resilience to climate change. The book concludes with policy recommendations for institutional practices that can support adaptive climate mobility.

Why Transportation Fails

Astrid,Wood  著
Routledge 出版
2025/07/16 出版

Why Transportation Fails offers an in-depth critique of transportation failures in South Africa and beyond. Minibus taxis are unreliable and overcrowded; buses and trains are old and poorly maintained; and new services are derailed by spiraling capital and operational costs, protracted and politicized rollouts, and unsolvable infrastructural challenges. Rather than focusing on these failures, the conceptual and practical analyses in this book develop a critical understanding of transportation and highlight the opportunities for transportation to be more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable. This book applies cutting-edge scholarship from geography and urban studies - decolonial geographies, Black geographies, policy mobilities, walking geographies, animal geographies, art geographies, and health geographies - to reframe transportation failure. The interdisciplinarity of this scholarship builds an approach that not only tells the story of transportation in South Africa but also uncovers a range of conceptual interpretations and imaginations that stretch beyond urban mobilities and urban development. In decentering traditional geographies of knowledge production, Why Transportation Fails contributes to critical considerations of urban transportation in Africa and aspects of transportation justice within social and spatial transformation.Given the never-ending financial and political investment in solving transportation, Why Transportation Fails is an essential reading for scholars of architecture, development, geography, politics, sociology, and urban planners and practitioners.
