Join scientist Dr Rosa Vasquez Espinoza as she uncovers one of the most unexplored regions on the planet. Dr Rosa is no stranger to the Amazon. Growing up with the rainforest as her back garden, she learnt the lessons of the rainforest from her grandmother, a native healer in natural medicine. She went on to pursue a classical education in science, gaining a PhD in the US, but has always been pulled back to the heart of the Amazon. As a leading biologist in her field, Rosa continues to explore the region through a unique blend of scientific inquiry and ancient insight. In this debut, you'll learn about Dr Rosa's journeys in the Amazon: her treacherous encounters with a boiling river, her conservation work with stingless bees, her experience of taking ayahuasca as a natural psychedelic - and all the amazing biodiversity of the rainforest. At the heart of Rosa's expedition is her passion to combine science with the indigenous knowledge of the Amazon. She shares her experience of learning from the indigenous communities that she visits, and shows what they have to teach us - stretching beyond the realm scientific knowledge. Here Rosa learns the most important lessons in how to reconnect to the natural world - and, in turn, will teach us to do the same. In this book, Rosa celebrates the richness of Amazonian culture, the wonders of biodiversity, and the enduring spiritual connections between humanity and the natural world.

Nordic Climate Histories
Down the centuries, the people of the Nordic countries have confronted challenges from climatic variability and change and sought ways to survive and adapt. In a time of accelerating global warming, these climate histories take on new contemporary significance. Drawing on tools from the natural and historical sciences, the innovative scholarship in this volume addresses questions such as: How did Nordic societies cope with past climatic hazards? What was the historical significance of the 'Little Ice Age' or the 'Medieval Climate Anomaly' for Nordic countries? And how do we study, narrate and learn from these past experiences? This volume is the first to collect climate histories from across all the Nordic countries. It combines research from climatologists, historians, archaeologists and museologists to explore how climate and culture interacted in the past and what we might learn from these interactions today. The chapters range from in-depth case studies to reflexive meta-histories; cover periods from the Bronze Age to the present; and draw on sources from tree rings to material culture to poetry. They also discuss how these histories can be communicated today, including how museums and literature can bring them into conversation with a current audience looking for lived experiences of climate adaptation. The volume was conceived during an international conference at the University of Oslo in May 2024. This interdisciplinary forum connected leading scholars in the field with practitioners and stakeholders. The essays presented here engage a rapidly growing field of intense public and political concern in the Nordics and beyond. The book speaks to various academic communities (climatology, history, literature) and stakeholders (museum practitioners, climate communicators and advocates). It includes the growing research and student community invested in this topic across several disciplines, practitioners and communicators in the field and the wider public interested in the vibrant debates about climate adaptation and experience.
An Appeal to save our earth
The global climate change won't start with rising seas. The global climate change won't start with coastal erosion. The real climate change will start with falling yields of crops andfailure of certain trees. It will slowly induce food shortages. When this situation arises, human dignity will be lost in this planet. It will be really nasty. My 4 year effort in writing this book is to avoid this situation. If we do things correctly, we can achieve permanence on our planet. We don't need mass migration. This can be done without losingany convenience.
Earthquake Resistant Design, Analysis and Construction to Registration
Did We not make the earth habitable? And the mountains as pegs? (78:6-7)". The purpose of earthquake resistant design is to allow inelastic deformation and structural damage at preferred locations in the structure without endangering structural integrity and to prevent structural collapse during a major earthquake. In general, most earthquake code provisions implicitly require that structures be able to resista. Minor Earthquakes without any damage.b. Moderate earthquakes without negligible structural damage and some nonstructural damage.c. Major earthquakes with some structural and some nonstructural damage but without collapse. The structure is capable to undergo fairly large deformations by yielding in some members. Each seismic zone coefficient provides expected peak ground acceleration values on rock/firm soil corresponding to the maximum considered earthquake. The design basis earthquake is taken as 2/3 of maximum considered earthquake.A Code designed structure is thought highly unlikely to collapse under ground motion that is one and one half (1.5) times as strong as the design earthquake ground motion.
Comment on the Correct Physical Value of the Gravitational Constant
It is widely believed that the gravitational constant G is difficult to measure with any degree of precision, due to the tiny magnitude and difficulty in shielding experimental apparatuses. Most scientists also believe that G cannot be derived in terms of other more precisely known physical constants. In his book, scientist Ronald Sherrod seeks to disprove these notions. Sherrod will show, by numerical analysis, an indirect pathway for relating G to other physical constants such that it can be evaluated. Thinking outside the box, Sherrod attempts to break through those barriers scientists have put up concerning G. About the AuthorRonald Sherrod is a retired member of the scientific community. He is currently a member of the ResearchGate community of scientists and is actively working on methods of carbon entrapment in regards to climate change. Sherrod resides in San Jose, California.

An Exaltation of Parks
Uncovering the partnership that saved America's natural treasures America's national parks are facing unprecedented challenges. With visitation pressures mounting and the National Park Service struggling to keep up, author and former park ranger Steve Kemp looks toward one exceptionally effective historical example of conservation philanthropy and park building--the collaboration between John D. Rockefeller Jr. and NPS legends Stephen Mather, Horace Albright, and Arno Cammerer. An Exaltation of Parks reveals the inspiring story of this collaboration, showing how the partnership transformed some of America's most cherished national parks, including Acadia, Grand Teton, Great Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone, and Yosemite. It recounts Rockefeller's lifelong dedication to conservation, digging into his own pockets and toiling as a volunteer to achieve his goals for converting private land into public use. Bringing to life the history and significance of America's most magnificent landscapes, this volume is both a tribute to past conservation victories and a call to action for the future, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance to preserve these national treasures for generations to come.

Principles of Geology; or, The Modern Changes of the Earth and its Inhabitants, Considered as Illustrative of Geology
Principles of Geology, by Sir Charles Lyell, is a landmark work that significantly influenced the development of geology as a modern science. Originally published in the 1830s, this edition reflects Lyell's continued refinement of his theories throughout his lifetime. The book meticulously examines the geological processes shaping the Earth, advocating for uniformitarianism-the principle that the same gradual processes operating today have shaped the Earth throughout its history. Lyell's detailed observations and arguments challenged prevailing catastrophist views and provided a framework for understanding geological time and the Earth's dynamic nature. This edition offers valuable insights into the history of geological thought and the foundations upon which modern earth sciences are built. "Principles of Geology" remains an essential resource for students and researchers interested in the history of science, geology, and the development of uniformitarianism. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
