This Special Issue of Minerals, "Industrial Mineral Flotation-Fundamentals and Applications," presents eight contributions that collectively advance the science and practice of flotation in industrial mineral processing. The papers cover a wide range of topics, from molecular-level insights into mineral-reagent interactions, bubble dynamics, and interfacial phenomena, to innovative engineering solutions that enhance separation efficiency. Fundamental studies explore the flotation mechanisms of spodumene, dolomite, apatite, and sulfide ores, providing new perspectives on reagent chemistry and interfacial control. Complementing these are applied investigations into rare-earth recovery, copper extraction from slags, ultrasonic-assisted flotation, and emulsion flotation for difficult-to-float coals. Geological Environment Monitoring and Early Warning Systems
Geological environment monitoring and providing early warnings for disasters are key issues of global concern. Soil erosion is one of the most important causes of geological disasters. Soil erosion causes the soil to be unable to absorb rainwater effectively, increasing the vulnerability of the surface and exacerbating surface runoff, which provides a prerequisite for the occurrence of geological disasters such as landslides and debris flows. Soil erosion occurs naturally in all climates and on all continents. Human activities are one of the main causes of soil erosion. With the growth of the global population and economic development, the intensity of human exploitation and utilization of land resources has increased, changing the natural state of the land and destroying the soil structure, thereby increasing the risk of soil erosion and posing a serious threat to global water resources, the environment, and even food security. To explore the risk of soil erosion, numerical simulations combined with hydrological models play a key role in studying the relationship between soil erosion and human activities. By simulating and analyzing hydrological processes (such as rainfall, runoff, and evaporation) within watersheds, the impact of human activities on soil erosion can be quantitatively assessed, guiding appropriate land planning and agricultural production layout. By simulating hydrological processes, important hydrological information support can be provided to ensure early warnings for geological environment disasters, thereby reducing their negative impact on the global environment and human society.

Climate change continues to cause unprecedented shifts in the global water cycle, leading to an increase in the frequency and severity of droughts across various regions. These extended dry periods disrupt ecosystems, reduce agricultural productivity, and challenge the resilience of societies that rely on stable water and food supplies. Recent events have shown how drought results in food insecurity, economic losses, and environmental damage, emphasizing the need for better monitoring and prediction tools. Understanding the wolf and rewilding a home: one couple's journey to coexist with nature in Northern Spain. In 2018, Katie and her boyfriend, Luke, moved to Asturias, Northern Spain, in search of a home. As conservation storytellers, they were drawn to the story of the Iberian wolf - a much-maligned creature facing relentless persecution right on their doorstep. The aim of this Special Issue is to bring the reader closer to the emerging field of low-cost environmental (air quality) sensors. Currently, these devices are attracting growing interest in research and development, since they can be easily deployed and used in the field, for instance, to monitor air quality in remote locations, far from official environmental stations. The data collected by LCSs can provide a more detailed description of the spatial distribution and temporal variations in anthropogenic air pollutants, such as gases and particulate matter. They can serve as research tools, for instance, in assessing human health impacts and emission source apportionment. Beyond these, measurement results from LCSs can be applied as input parameters in air pollution dispersion models, which can improve the accuracy of approximations of local air quality and related concentration/deposition maps. Elevated trace metal levels harm the soil's biological properties, disrupt food chains, damage plants, and pollute groundwater. Assessments typically focus on total and geochemical baseline concentrations, which help distinguish natural from anthropogenic levels and calculate human contributions. When heavy metal levels exceed permissible limits, soil fertility declines, enzymatic activity is inhibited, and acidity changes.Long-term mining and extraction cause severe environmental pollution and ecological damage, but remain essential for supplying critical raw materials to modern technologies. Despite the fact that water resources are critical for sustaining life on Earth, the increase in human population, coupled with global environmental change, has exerted pressure on the finite resource. Water scarcity arising from rapid population growth, droughts, erratic rainfall, overexploitation, and increased pollution threatens the supply of water of sufficient quality and quantity to meet the global water demand. Fortunately, the increase in readily available remotely sensed data with improved sensing characteristics, as well as accompanying advancements in geospatial modeling techniques in recent years, provides scientists with indispensable tools for not only monitoring and assessing the state of water resources but also the environment at various spatial scales. This Special Issue focused on innovative and practical applications of cutting-edge remote sensing and modeling techniques on water resources and environmental management. Papers applying remote sensing in assessing and monitoring freshwater quality, quantity, and management to ensure water security were welcome. Troubled Tributaries
Anglers knee-deep in Alberta's mountain streams after the First World War understood that there was something wrong. Coal mining, forestry, and irrigation were industrializing landscapes. Roads and railways brought unprecedented numbers of people to remote fishing grounds. Once home to abundant runs of cutthroat, mountain whitefish, and bull trout, the Bow, Highwood, and Oldman Rivers, and their many high mountain tributaries, were in crises. Up and down the Eastern Slopes, anglers rallied to defend their watersheds. The ensuing fish fights were not peaceful. Deep disagreement on tributary closures, open season dates, environmental protection, regulation and enforcement raged among fishers. But despite their disputed viewpoints, Alberta's anglers agreed to advocate fiercely for the conservation of their rivers and streams. Anglers knee-deep in Alberta's mountain streams after the First World War understood that there was something wrong. Coal mining, forestry, and irrigation were industrializing landscapes. Roads and railways brought unprecedented numbers of people to remote fishing grounds. Once home to abundant runs of cutthroat, mountain whitefish, and bull trout, the Bow, Highwood, and Oldman Rivers, and their many high mountain tributaries, were in crises. This grand solar minimum period during the decades ahead portends natural cooling risks, including seasonal weather extremes, Polar glaciation, sea ice expansion, climate-forcing volcanism, and an increased prospect of viral pandemics. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change erroneously dismissed these cooling risks based on its Article 2-diktat, while Government agencies algorithmically increased the global temperature indices with each new version released to hide our climate change reality. The Poles entered a new Ice Age after the glacial cycle's peak temperature 8-10.5 millennia ago. Greenland's temperature then declined 5簞C via a series of oscillations to its coldest trough in the 1700s. The most extreme solar activity-induced warming phase in 8,000 years was then entered, which may have peaked before 2022. Glacier ice accumulated from 5-millennia ago reaching its peak during the Little Ice Age. Much of this ice melted with the prolonged grand solar maximum phase, and before significant human climate influence.This book provides global best-practice solutions for implementing centralized and decentralized sustainable development, to secure energy, water, and food during cold climates. Alarmingly, there are only fifty years of proven oil and gas reserves left, while unproven reserves are modeled guesstimates, meaning we must take urgent action to switch the world's energy system to renewable energy. Energy Consumption at Production Stages in Mining
Mining work schedules are planned so that mine transport routes are as short as possible while minimizing energy consumption. For vertical or inclined workings, the type of equipment with skip devices or belt conveyors is particularly important, for which effective working time is planned. In turn, for preparatory and exploitation workings, especially in ore mining, machines with combustion and electric drives play a significant role. As the depth of exploitation increases, natural hazards increase. The increase in the primary temperature of a rock mass and the release of heat by operating machines require that not only an appropriate amount of air be supplied to the excavation but also that the air is appropriately cooled. Moreover, the present groundwater requires that the workings be equipped with special pumps to discharge it to the surface. In the last production stage, excavated material must be prepared for the process of separating useful components from waste rocks in a processing plant. This is a highly energy-consuming process that requires a detailed analysis of the machines and devices used. Individual stages of mining metallic, energy, chemical, or rock raw materials require determining energy consumption in both the short and long term while maintaining a balance between production costs and the safety of the works carried out. In this Special Issue of Energies, we focus on innovative laboratory, numerical, and industrial research that has a positive impact on energy consumption at various production stages in mining.
