Elin,Kelsey  著
Greystone 出版
2025/08/15 出版

"How to Be Hopeful is a beautifully executed explanation of why hope is so needed in the environmental space."--Leah Thomas, author of The Intersectional Environmentalist "Kelsey's nourishing work reminds us that being human and managing complex emotions is a part of the process in healing the Earth and sprouting hope around the world."--Isaias Hernandez, @QueerBrownVegan "Are you hopeful?" That is the question elin kelsey is most often asked when she speaks to young people about the emotions and anxiety wrought by the climate crisis. How to Be Hopeful is kelsey's answer, an inspiring exploration of hope as an active, evidence-based response to climate change and environmental degradation. Hope is not merely a passive feeling but an active choice, a stance that must be nurtured despite the ever-present sense of despair and hopelessness that often accompanies the state of the world. Through personal reflections, scientific insights, and practical exercises, How to Be Hopeful emphasizes emotional awareness, community collaboration, and the agency of both humans and non-human species. Some of the practices described in the book include: Accepting your fears without fatalismSourcing solutions-focused news and tracking positive trendsActing from your unique giftsPracticing interspecies etiquetteGathering strength from your circles of supportA seminal contribution to the field of environmental justice, How to Be Hopeful empowers readers to confront their own emotional landscapes, engage in collective action, envision a sustainable future, and ultimately, cultivate a hopeful and resilient response to the pressing issues of our time. Common Ground

2025/08/14 出版

In Common Ground, veteran organizer Eileen Flanagan weaves together a series of stories of hard won successes in the climate change movement, including against a multinational bank in one case, and a heavily polluting fossil fuel company in another, based on grassroots organizing. As heat waves, wildfires, storms, and floods become ever more deadly, the book describes a groundswell of action in which citizens of all ages, races and political stripes struggle to understand each other and the enormous challenges we face fighting companies and governments wilfully blind to the climate change dangers we face as a society. A Quaker activist, facilitator, and teacher, Flanagan takes us on a personal journey through her environmental direct-action experiences as well as her relationships with community leaders to understand how we can form coalitions to actually make a difference. Flanagan shows that "the illusion of separation"--the fallacy that humans can thrive in a dying world--is at the root of interlocking environmental crises and that it's often politicians and corporations who benefit by keeping the rest of us divided across lines of race, class, religion, and generation. In Common Ground, Flanagan argues that more than technology or even elections, acting in solidarity with all life is humanity's best hope for survival. Includes a foreword by internationally acclaimed South African activist Kumi Naidoo, President of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative and former head of Greenpeace International and Amnesty International.

Proceedings of the 5th Global Summit of the Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (Gadri)

Springer 出版
2025/08/13 出版

This book presents selected papers from the 5th Global Summit of the Global Alliance of Disaster Research Institutes (GADRI)-Engaging Sciences with Action, which was held virtually and regionally from 31 August to 1 September 2021. The Summit reappraised progress and achievements in disaster risk reduction research by the members towards the targets of the science and technology roadmap to implement the goals and priorities of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. The programme communicated academic science across various scientific disciplines to policymakers and practitioners. This cross-disciplinary aspect is important for academics to be aware of how science can directly contribute to mitigate national and local disasters, for example, the global pandemic COVID-19, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The Global Summit of GADRI was attentive to the necessary influence of the Global Alliance and its supporting regional alliances to reflect disaster research into the outcome of the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) that took place in Glasgow, UK, in November 2021. The summit contributed to COP26 and provided an impetus to climate change mitigation and adaptation, and health challenges for climate policy to work in the framework of disaster resilience and response. Facilitated through the UK Alliance for Disaster Research, the recommendations by the 5th Global Summit of GADRI were presented at COP26 as well as the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR)'s Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction titled "From Risk to Resilience: Towards Sustainable Development for All in a COVID-19 Transformed World", which was held in Bali, Indonesia, from 23 to 28 May 2022.

Laudate Deum

Laudato Si 出版
2025/08/13 出版

Pope Francis' encyclical letter Laudato Si' called for radical action to address climate change and its underlying causes. Since the letter's publication, however, greenhouse gas emissions have continued to rise and sufficiently profound changes to how we live, work and feed the global population have failed to materialise, leading Pope Francis to issue the follow-up exhortation Laudate Deum in 2023. Laudate Deum: A Last Call for the Planet builds upon and is inspired by this seminal work. Ten years on from Laudato Si', it brings together voices from across the world to explore the profound issues highlighted by the late Pope, from the 'technocratic paradigm' that has broken humanity's relationship with the natural world, to the poverty and injustice that the climate crisis itself perpetuates. Above all, this publication illustrates that the time for action is already overtaking us. Laudate Deum really does represent a 'Last Call for the Planet': a last chance to live up to our collective responsibility as human beings to care for God's creation, before it is too late for life as we know it to survive.

The Great Experiment in Conservation

2025/08/12 出版

The Adirondack region of New York State is, in many respects, America's cauldron of conservation. It was there, more than a century ago, that wanton exploitation of forests first aroused concern about human impact on the environment. It was there that Americans first began to set aside lands proclaimed as "forever wild." The establishment of the Adirondack Park created an immense landscape of 6 million acres composed of a mixture of public and private lands in nearly equal proportion. This unprecedented blend of human communities within wild lands makes the Adirondack Park perhaps one of the greatest case studies in conservation and development in U.S. history. Representing a remarkable achievement in environmental scholarship and drawn from decades of research, The Great Experiment in Conservation captures the wisdom born of the last thirty years of the park's evolution. The editors bring together leading scholars, activists, and practitioners--those who know the Park's origin and the realities of living in a protected area--to narrate this history. Organized into three sections, contributors explore the ecological, cultural, and economic aspects of the region, drawing lessons from successes and failures as they struggle to find the right balance of private interests and public controls. With keen insight and deep passion, the authors reveal the Adirondack Park's rich natural and cultural history in shaping conservation policy, providing vital contributions to the future study of land preservation. Contributors include: Herman Daly, Bill McKibben, Barbara McMartin, Philip G. Terrie, Amy Vedder, and Bill Weber.

The New Global Possible

Ani,Dasgupta  著
2025/08/12 出版

Global environmental leader Ani Dasgupta takes an honest look at lagging climate action and maps out what can be done to rebuild hope for the future. In 2015, world leaders came together in Paris and signed an agreement to save the planet. Ten years later, we have made little progress on the ground, and the climate crisis is worse than ever. We've mostly figured out what we need to do, but not how to get it done--and time is running out. In this groundbreaking new book, World Resources Institute President and CEO Ani Dasgupta explores how to orchestrate change at speed and scale. How do we get countries to keep working together on climate action when multilateralism is declining? How do we harness technological innovation to protect nature, rather than destroy it? How do we dismantle entrenched power structures and rapidly transition to a clean, resilient economy? Based on conversations with more than one hundred leaders around the world, Dasgupta weaves together stories of unusual partnerships, collaborative leadership, and lessons learned from failure. Mining the rich history of the climate movement, The New Global Possible defines the narrow path to a hopeful future--one requiring all of our collective focus and determination--and offers a radical new practice for orchestrating change for good.

Our Five Seasons

2025/08/12 出版

From the Fields, Sounding the Alarm of Climate Change Our Five Seasons offers powerful, first-hand accounts of what is happening to our food system in the face of climate change. Drawing from the lived knowledge of farmworkers-those on the front lines of our changing environment--this book reveals the dramatic and subtle changes that are impacting U.S. agriculture and the reality of what it is like to live and work under these conditions. While the challenges facing our food system may seem distant from our everyday lives, in truth, the dangers that threaten farmworker lives and wellbeing impact all of us. The struggles with Cold, Heat, Storms, Fires, and Pesticides that farmworkers face are not just consequences of global warming but of a system that is becoming increasingly unstable, unsafe, and unhealthy. Through powerful storytelling and first-hand accounts, Our Five Seasons gives voice to those who have been ignored and relates the biggest threats to U.S. agriculture in farmworkers' own words. It shares wisdom shaped by heatwaves, floods, fires, and pesticide drift --and by the deep connection farmworkers have to the land they work. You'll hear from seasoned pickers, irrigators, and organizers who are sounding the alarm on our food system from the fields.Learn about: the generations of knowledge and experience that farmworkers bring to their labor;the dangers and hardships they face at home and in the workplace;workers' innovation and adaptation to address climate threats;their warnings for consumers further down the food system;and much more. . .Our Five Seasons will shift how you understand our food system in a changing climate --not as a distant crisis, but as a daily reality already shaping lives and labor. Whether you're a policymaker seeking practical solutions, an advocate fighting for justice, or someone who simply wants to listen and learn, this book will deepen your understanding of the climate crisis from the people who know it best. From the Author: From my conversations with farmworkers across the U.S., it became clear that climate change is radically changing the conditions of agriculture and can no longer be understood in traditional terms. Our Five Seasons shifts our perceptions from winter, spring, summer, and fall to highlight the seasons that have the greatest impact on farmworker lives and our food supply. In this way, Cold, Heat, Storms, Fires, and Pesticides have become central actors in farmworker lives and labor, redefining our modern food system, and impacting all of us through the food we eat.

Lake Erie's Long Point and the Company that saved it

Petra Books 出版
2025/08/11 出版

Long Point, a wilderness in the Canadian waters of Lake Erie, attracts thousands of migrating waterfowl. In the 1800s it was becoming a home for nefarious activities including illegal logging and hunting, drunkenness and prostitution. Seeking to bring the lawlessness under control, the pre-confederation British Government parcelled off the land for auction in 1866 and a group of wealthy businessmen seeking a private duck hunting preserve established the Long Point Company. With the arrival of the Gilded Age in the 1870s, American millionaires came to dominate the membership. The area is designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. www.unesco.org/en/mab/long-pointPutting his curiosity and research skills to use, Stephen Selk has documented the symbiotic relationship that has proven beneficial to both Long Point and the shareholders.

Remediation Strategies for Soil and Water

Mdpi AG 出版
2025/08/11 出版

With the rapid development of industries worldwide, soil and water pollution have accelerated in recent decades. The pollutants, including heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, antibiotics, and microplastics, in soil and water pose severe environmental problems, presenting serious risks to human health and the ecological system. Approximately 4 billion people, representing around half of the world's population, experience severe physical water scarcity for at least part of the year. Hence, several techniques have been developed for the remediation of contaminated soil and water, including adsorption, membrane separation, advanced oxidation, ion exchange, electrochemical treatment, microbial degradation, and phytoremediation. Considering the ongoing issue of pollution and emerging pollutants, remediation strategies for soil and water should be further optimized to focus on developing functional materials, improving remediation efficiency, and enhancing integrated remediation processes. This Reprint, entitled "Remediation Strategies for Soil and Water," features six research articles and three review papers, each addressing critical aspects of remediation processes for soil and water.
