Lake Erie's Long Point and the Company that saved it
Long Point, a wilderness in the Canadian waters of Lake Erie, attracts thousands of migrating waterfowl. In the 1800s it was becoming a home for nefarious activities including illegal logging and hunting, drunkenness and prostitution. Seeking to bring the lawlessness under control, the pre-confederation British Government parcelled off the land for auction in 1866 and a group of wealthy businessmen seeking a private duck hunting preserve established the Long Point Company. With the arrival of the Gilded Age in the 1870s, American millionaires came to dominate the membership. Remediation Strategies for Soil and Water
With the rapid development of industries worldwide, soil and water pollution have accelerated in recent decades. The pollutants, including heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, antibiotics, and microplastics, in soil and water pose severe environmental problems, presenting serious risks to human health and the ecological system. Approximately 4 billion people, representing around half of the world's population, experience severe physical water scarcity for at least part of the year. Hence, several techniques have been developed for the remediation of contaminated soil and water, including adsorption, membrane separation, advanced oxidation, ion exchange, electrochemical treatment, microbial degradation, and phytoremediation. Considering the ongoing issue of pollution and emerging pollutants, remediation strategies for soil and water should be further optimized to focus on developing functional materials, improving remediation efficiency, and enhancing integrated remediation processes. This Reprint, entitled "Remediation Strategies for Soil and Water," features six research articles and three review papers, each addressing critical aspects of remediation processes for soil and water.

An Analysis of the Effectiveness of Pollution Prevention in Reducing Environmental Compliance Costs
The objective of the Air Force's compliance through pollution prevention (CTP2) program is to reduce overall environmental compliance (EC) cost and risk (compliance burden) associated with maintaining compliance at an installation through increased pollution prevention (P2) efforts. However, no quantifiable evidence has been produced that suggests P2 projects are actually reducing compliance burden. Verification and Comparison of Polar MM5 and AFWA MM5 Forecasts Over Alaska
The Mesoscale Model 5th Generation (MM5) is used for operational support to Air Force missions in the Alaskan Theater. The 11th Operational Weather squadron has identified problems with the MM5 producing excessively warm surface temperature forecasts. The Polar MM5 (PMM5), developed by the Byrd Polar Research Center for the high latitude ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland, is tested over the Alaskan domains used by the Air Force Weather Agency to determine the utility in replacing the MM5 with the PMM5. The verification of surface temperature, pressure and wind as well as upper-air temperature, geopotential height, and relative humidity of 27-hour PMM5 forecasts are compared to the MM5 forecasts to assess the differences between the models' accuracies. A grid-to-station inverse-weighted linear interpolation technique is used to compare model output to surface observation for 71 locations and to radiosonde upper-air observations for 7 locations. Territorial Space and Transportation Coordinated Development
Territorial space and transportation are closely related to each other. The interaction mechanism and coordinated development of the two are important research directions of academic concern. On the one hand, transportation networks are the skeleton of national and regional development, and the comprehensive transportation system provided by highways, railways, aviation, and water promotes the development of territorial space. On the other hand, the pressure of transportation infrastructure and transportation activities on the protection of territorial space such as ecological and agricultural land is also increasing. The question of how to coordinate the relationship between development and protection, use the network effect of transportation to empower regional development, and improve the environmental impact of the transportation field, thereby enhancing regional sustainability, is a key scientific issue that needs to be studied urgently. In order to promote research in the field of territorial space and transportation coordination, as well as the deep integration of production, study, and research, we have organized a Special Issue titled "Coordinated development of territorial space and transportation" in Land. Urban Regeneration
Many aspects come into play when addressing urban regeneration issues, and various interventions are needed to ensure cities are resilient and prepared to respond to environmental, economic, and social challenges. Resilience is understood as a "cross-cutting condition" in the reorganisation of a city, as the ability to provide adaptive and timely responses to numerous challenges and adverse events. Land consumption, characterised by the expansion of artificial cover for residential, manufacturing, and infrastructure purposes, is a worrying trend globally. There is a need to monitor and formulate strategies to mitigate land consumption and safeguard ecosystem services. Only through joint actions will cities be prepared to address key land vulnerabilities exacerbated by climate change: drought and water scarcity, heat waves in urban areas, unconventional events, and hydrogeological risk. This Special Issue aims to identify contextual actions that can reduce land consumption, promote de-impermeabilization, and encourage re-naturalisation, focusing on enhancing ecosystem services in land use activities. Therefore, it focuses on understanding the contributions of ecosystem services, landscape restoration and green infrastructure for climate mitigation, and land use reduction in urban regeneration processes.

Death Valley Regional Ground-water Flow System, Nevada and California
A numerical three-dimensional (3D) transient ground-water flow model of the Death Valley region was developed by the U.S. Geological Survey for the U.S. Department of Energy programs at the Nevada Test Site and at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Decades of study of aspects of the ground-water flow system and previous less extensive ground-water flow models were incorporated and reevaluated together with new data to provide greater detail for the complex, digital model. A 3D digital hydrogeologic framework model (HFM) was developed from digital elevation models, geologic maps, borehole information, geologic and hydrogeologic cross sections, and other 3D models to represent the geometry of the hydrogeologic units (HGUs). Structural features, such as faults and fractures, that affect ground-water flow also were added. The HFM represents Precambrian and Paleozoic crystalline and sedimentary rocks, Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, Mesozoic to Cenozoic intrusive rocks, Cenozoic volcanic tuffs and lavas, and late Cenozoic sedimentary deposits of the Death Valley Regional Ground-Water Flow System (DVRFS) region in 27 HGUs. Information from a series of investigations was compiled to conceptualize and quantify hydrologic components of the ground-water flow system within the DVRFS model domain and to provide hydraulic-property and head-observation data used in the calibration of the transient-flow model. These studies reevaluated natural ground-water discharge occurring through evapotranspiration and spring flow; the history of ground-water pumping from 1913 through 1998; ground-water recharge simulated as net infiltration; model boundary inflows and outflows based on regional hydraulic gradients and water budgets of surrounding areas; hydraulic conductivity and its relation to depth; and water levels appropriate for regional simulation of prepumped and pumped conditions within the DVRFS model domain. Simulation results appropriate for the regional extent and scale of the model were provided by acquiring additional data, by reevaluating existing data using current technology and concepts, and by refining earlier interpretations to reflect the current understanding of the regional ground-water flow system. Ground-water flow in the Death Valley region is composed of several interconnected, complex ground-water flow systems. Hydrology and Ground-Water Quality in the Mine Workings Within the Picher Mining District, Northeastern Oklahoma, 2002-03
The Picher mining district of northeastern Ottawa County, Oklahoma, was a major site of mining for lead and zinc ores in the first half of the 20th century. The primary source of lead and zinc were sulfide minerals disseminated in the cherty limestones and dolomites of the Boone Formation of Mississippian age, which comprises the Boone aquifer. Ground water in the aquifer and seeping to surface water in the district has been contaminated by sulfate, iron, lead, zinc, and several other metals. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality, investigated hydrology and ground-water quality in the mine workings in the mining district, as part of the process to aid water managers and planners in designing remediation measures that may restore the environmental quality of the district to pre-mining conditions. Most ground-water levels underlying the mining district had similar altitudes, indicating a large degree of hydraulic connection in the mine workings and overlying aquifer materials. Recharge-age dates derived from concentrations of chlorofluorocarbons and other dissolved gases indicated that water in the Boone aquifer may flow slowly from the northeast and southeast portions of the mining district. However, recharge-age dates may have been affected by the types of sites sampled, with more recent recharge-age dates being associated with mine-shafts, which are more prone to atmospheric interactions and surface runoff than the sampled airshafts. Water levels in streams upstream from the confluence of Tar and Lytle Creeks were several feet higher than those in adjacent portions of the Boone aquifer, perhaps due to low-permeability streambed sediments and indicating the streams may be losing water to the aquifer in this area. From just upstream to downstream from the confluence of Tar and Lytle Creeks, surface-water elevations in these streams were less than those in the surrounding Boone aquifer, indicating that seepage from the aquifer to downstream portions of Tar Creek was much more likely.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
