Multivariate Data Analysis on Matrix Manifolds
This graduate-level textbook aims to give a unified presentation and solution of several commonly used techniques for multivariate data analysis (MDA). Unlike similar texts, it treats the MDA problems as optimization problems on matrix manifolds defined by the MDA model parameters, allowing them to be solved using (free) optimization software Manopt. The book includes numerous in-text examples as well as Manopt codes and software guides, which can be applied directly or used as templates for solving similar and new problems. The first two chapters provide an overview and essential background for studying MDA, giving basic information and notations. Next, it considers several sets of matrices routinely used in MDA as parameter spaces, along with their basic topological properties. A brief introduction to matrix (Riemannian) manifolds and optimization methods on them with Manopt complete the MDA prerequisite. The remaining chapters study individual MDA techniques in depth. The number of exercises complement the main text with additional information and occasionally involve open and/or challenging research questions. Suitable fields include computational statistics, data analysis, data mining and data science, as well as theoretical computer science, machine learning and optimization. It is assumed that the readers have some familiarity with MDA and some experience with matrix analysis, computing, and optimization.
Statistics in the Public Interest
This edited volume surveys a variety of topics in statistics and the social sciences in memory of the late Stephen Fienberg. The book collects submissions from a wide range of contemporary authors to explore the fields in which Fienberg made significant contributions, including contingency tables and log-linear models, privacy and confidentiality, forensics and the law, the decennial census and other surveys, the National Academies, Bayesian theory and methods, causal inference and causes of effects, mixed membership models, and computing and machine learning. Selected Topics in Malliavin Calculus
This book is not a research monograph about Malliavin calculus with the latest results and the most sophisticated proofs. It does not contain all the results which are known even for the basic subjects which are addressed here. The goal was to give the largest possible variety of proof techniques. For instance, we did not focus on the proof of concentration inequality for functionals of the Brownian motion, as it closely follows the lines of the analog result for Poisson functionals. This book grew from the graduate courses I gave at Paris-Sorbonne and Paris-Saclay universities, during the last few years. It is supposed to be as accessible as possible for students who have knowledge of Itô calculus and some rudiments of functional analysis.
Pupil Reactions in Response to Human Mental Activity
This book focuses on a development for assessing mental changes using eye pupil reactions, namely extracting emotional change from the response to evaluate the viewer's interest in visual information. The pupil of the eye reacts to both brightness and emotional state, including interest, enjoyment, and mental workload. Because pupillary change is a biological signal, various artifacts influence measurements of eye images. Technical procedures are required to extract mental activities from pupillary changes, and they are summarized here step by step, although some procedures contain earlier techniques such as analog video processing. This study examines the possibility of estimating the viewer's interest and enjoyment of viewing movies by measuring the dynamic pupillary changes, blinking, and subjective interest responses. In evaluation of pupil size, there was a significant difference in pupil size between the higher and the lower shot for the degree of subject interest response in each kind of movies. The first part of the book shows a pupil reaction model for brightness changes to extract mental activities. Pupil reactions were observed for various visual stimuli in brightness changes. With regard to the characteristics of pupillary changes, a model with a three-layer neural network was developed and the performance was evaluated. Characteristics of pupil reactions during model development are summarized here. The second part examines the possibility of estimating the viewer's interest and enjoyment of television programs by measuring dynamic pupillary changes, blinking, and subjective interest responses. The final part describes a development of estimation model of pupil size for blink artifact. The model development was able to estimate pupillary changes and pupil size while the viewer was blinking and was applied to pupillary changes in viewing television programs.
A Graduate Course in Probability
This book grew out of the notes for a one-semester basic graduate course in probability. As the title suggests, it is meant to be an introduction to probability and could serve as textbook for a year long text for a basic graduate course. It assumes some familiarity with measure theory and integration so in this book we emphasize only those aspects of measure theory that have special probabilistic uses.The book covers the topics that are part of the culture of an aspiring probabilist and it is guided by the author's personal belief that probability was and is a theory driven by examples. The examples form the main attraction of this subject. For this reason, a large book is devoted to an eclectic collection of examples, from classical to modern, from mainstream to 'exotic'. The text is complemented by nearly 200 exercises, quite a few nontrivial, but all meant to enhance comprehension and enlarge the reader's horizons.While teaching probability both at undergraduate and graduate level the author discovered the revealing power of simulations. For this reason, the book contains a veiled invitation to the reader to familiarize with the programing language R. In the appendix, there are a few of the most frequently used operations and the text is sprinkled with (less than optimal) R codes. Nowadays one can do on a laptop simulations and computations we could only dream as an undergraduate in the past. This is a book written by a probability outsider. That brings along a bit of freshness together with certain 'naiveties'.

Mathematical Tools for Neuroscience
This book provides a brief but accessible introduction to a set of related, mathematical ideas that have proved useful in understanding the brain and behaviour. If you record the eye movements of a group of people watching a riverside scene then some will look at the river, some will look at the barge by the side of the river, some will look at the people on the bridge, and so on, but if a duck takes off then everybody will look at it. How come the brain is so adept at processing such biological objects? In this book it is shown that brains are especially suited to exploiting the geometric properties of such objects. Central to the geometric approach is the concept of a manifold, which extends the idea of a surface to many dimensions. The manifold can be specified by collections of n-dimensional data points or by the paths of a system through state space. Just as tangent planes can be used to analyse the local linear behaviour of points on a surface, so the extension to tangent spaces can be used to investigate the local linear behaviour of manifolds. The majority of the geometric techniques introduced are all about how to do things with tangent spaces.Examples of the geometric approach to neuroscience include the analysis of colour and spatial vision measurements and the control of eye and arm movements. Additional examples are used to extend the applications of the approach and to show that it leads to new techniques for investigating neural systems. An advantage of following a geometric approach is that it is often possible to illustrate the concepts visually and all the descriptions of the examples are complemented by comprehensively captioned diagrams.The book is intended for a reader with an interest in neuroscience who may have been introduced to calculus in the past but is not aware of the many insights obtained by a geometric approach to the brain. Appendices contain brief reviews of the required background knowledge in neuroscience and calculus.
Mixture and Hidden Markov Models with R
This book discusses mixture and hidden Markov models for modeling behavioral data. Mixture and hidden Markov models are statistical models which are useful when an observed system occupies a number of distinct "regimes" or unobserved (hidden) states. These models are widely used in a variety of fields, including artificial intelligence, biology, finance, and psychology. Hidden Markov models can be viewed as an extension of mixture models, to model transitions between states over time. Covering both mixture and hidden Markov models in a single book allows main concepts and issues to be introduced in the relatively simpler context of mixture models. After a thorough treatment of the theory and practice of mixture modeling, the conceptual leap towards hidden Markov models is relatively straightforward. This book provides many practical examples illustrating the wide variety of uses of the models. These examples are drawn from our own work in psychology, as well as other areas such as financial time series and climate data. Most examples illustrate the use of the authors' depmixS4 package, which provides a flexible framework to construct and estimate mixture and hidden Markov models. All examples are fully reproducible and the accompanying hmmR package provides all the datasets used, as well as additional functionality. Optimal Control of Dynamic Systems Driven by Vector Measures
This book is devoted to the development of optimal control theory for finite dimensional systems governed by deterministic and stochastic differential equations driven by vector measures. The book deals with a broad class of controls, including regular controls (vector-valued measurable functions), relaxed controls (measure-valued functions) and controls determined by vector measures, where both fully and partially observed control problems are considered. In the past few decades, there have been remarkable advances in the field of systems and control theory thanks to the unprecedented interaction between mathematics and the physical and engineering sciences. Basic Representation Theory of Algebras
This textbook introduces the representation theory of algebras by focusing on two of its most important aspects: the Auslander-Reiten theory and the study of the radical of a module category. It starts by introducing and describing several characterisations of the radical of a module category, then presents the central concepts of irreducible morphisms and almost split sequences, before providing the definition of the Auslander-Reiten quiver, which encodes much of the information on the module category. It then turns to the study of endomorphism algebras, leading on one hand to the definition of the Auslander algebra and on the other to tilting theory. Artificial Intelligence for Financial Markets
This book introduces the novel artificial intelligence technique of polymodels and applies it to the prediction of stock returns. The idea of polymodels is to describe a system by its sensitivities to an environment, and to monitor it, imitating what a natural brain does spontaneously. In practice this involves running a collection of non-linear univariate models. This very powerful standalone technique has several advantages over traditional multivariate regressions. With its easy to interpret results, this method provides an ideal preliminary step towards the traditional neural network approach. The first two chapters compare the technique with other regression alternatives and introduces an estimation method which regularizes a polynomial regression using cross-validation. The rest of the book applies these ideas to financial markets. Certain equity return components are predicted using polymodels in very different ways, and a genetic algorithm is describedwhich combines these different predictions into a single portfolio, aiming to optimize the portfolio returns net of transaction costs. Universal Algebraic Logic
This book gives a comprehensive introduction to Universal Algebraic Logic. The three main themes are (i) universal logic and the question of what logic is, (ii) duality theories between the world of logics and the world of algebra, and (iii) Tarskian algebraic logic proper including algebras of relations of various ranks, cylindric algebras, relation algebras, polyadic algebras and other kinds of algebras of logic.
