R for Quantitative Chemistry
R for Quantitative Chemistry is an exploration of how the R language can be applied to a wide variety of problems in what is typically termed "Quantitative Chemistry" or sometimes "Analytical Chemistry". Topics include: basic statistics, spectroscopic data, acid base equilibria and titrations, binding curves (of great current interest for biomedical applications), Fourier Transforms, and chemical kinetics and enzyme kinetics. An innovative feature is the discussion (as an alternative to the less stable nls packages) of the simplex adaptation subplex (R package) coupled with Monte Carlo analysis to determine confidence intervals for estimated parameters resulting from least squares optimization. Chemists who are interested in learning R as a research tool as well as Chemists who are teaching Quantitative Chemistry, as well as their students will be interested. This book is useful as most R books approach data analysis from an economic, social, medical, or biological context. Analysis of chemical data draws upon specific numerical models and a different set R programming and packages than is typically discussed in other disciplines. This book will be based upon, in large part, actual experimental data and will include end of chapter questions and projects. Readers are encouraged to email the author at gosserch@gmail.com and to follow the accompanying blog on Medium "R Programming for Quantitative Chemistry". Secretariat and Man o’ War
I began this book with the express purpose of making it the definitive comparison of Secretariat and Man o' War. I feel that I've succeeded. By engaging the discipline of applied statistics to compare the legendary achievements of these two horses, I am being completely honest about my two primary audiences-the serious Thoroughbred racing fan and those desiring a clearer comparison of runner quality that only the lens of basic statistics can provide. The statistics in this book are basic and are completely explained as the text progresses. They are not difficult-provided one is motivated to compare Thoroughbreds on an objective rather than subjective level and to spend a modicum of extra time learning the minimal eight-grade-level computations the statistics require. I personally wish all readers well on their journey into what is possibly a groundbreaking area, thereby showing their willingness to accept a very modest challenge.
Science, Music, and Mathematics
Professor Michael Edgeworth McIntyre is an eminent scientist who has also had a part-time career as a musician. In this book he offers an extraordinary synthesis, revealing the many deep connections between science, music, and mathematics. He avoids equations and technical jargon. The connections are deep in the sense of being embedded in our very nature, rooted in biological evolution over hundreds of millions of years.Michael guides us through biological evolution, perception psychology, and even unconscious science and mathematics, all the way to the scientific uncertainties about the climate crisis. He also has a message of hope for the future. Contrary to popular belief, he holds that biological evolution has given us not only the nastiest, but also the most compassionate and cooperative parts of human nature. This insight comes from recognizing that biological evolution is far more than a simple competition between selfish genes. Instead, he argues, in some ways it is more like the turbulent, eddying flow in a river or in an atmospheric jet stream, a complex process spanning a vast range of timescales.Professor McIntyre is a Fellow of the Royal Society of London (FRS) and has long been interested in how different branches of science can better communicate with each other, and with the public. His work harnesses aspects of neuroscience and psychology that point toward the deep 'lucidity principles' that underlie skilful communication, principles related to the way music works -- music of any genre. This Second Edition sharpens the previous discussion of communication skills and their importance for today's great problems, ranging from the widely discussed climate crisis to the need to understand the strengths and weaknesses of artificial intelligence.

On the Modified Caputo’s Derivative Operator
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2022 in the subject Mathematics - Analysis, grade: 4.00, language: English, abstract: The main subject of this study coincides with the recently adapted methodology in the theory of univalent functions via applications of fractional calculus. The Caputo's definition of fractional derivative of order has not been obviously applied in the field. However, it plays a vital role in other areas like physics and engineering due to its simple restrictions compared to Liouville's integral operator. By modifying the Caputo's derivative operator, a new modified Caputo's operator is defined in this book. Consequently, new subclasses of analytic functions are introduced, and basic properties, such as distortion theorems, extremal functions, coefficient bounds, the integral transform, superordination and subordination results are discussed. The radii of basic well known properties (Univalency, Starlikeness, Convexity) are also obtained for the new subclasses. Moreover, some results of the modified Hadamard product (convolution) are provided by applying the famous Cauchy-Schwartz inequality. In order to expand the application of the modified Caputo's operator, two new subclasses of analytic p-valent functions are introduced and investigated through the concepts of neighbourhood and inclusion relations. Further, the definition of Univalency with respect to 1 together with subordination are used to solve a sharp functional of Fekete-Szeg繹 problem. Moreover, some interesting results related to Hankel determinant are obtained.

Stochastic Elasticity
Stochastic elasticity is a fast developing field that combines nonlinear elasticity and stochastic theories in order to significantly improve model predictions by accounting for uncertainties in the mechanical responses of materials. However, in contrast to the tremendous development of computational methods for large-scale problems, which have been proposed and implemented extensively in recent years, at the fundamental level, there is very little understanding of the uncertainties in the behaviour of elastic materials under large strains.Based on the idea that every large-scale problem starts as a small-scale data problem, this book combines fundamental aspects of finite (large-strain) elasticity and probability theories, which are prerequisites for the quantification of uncertainties in the elastic responses of soft materials. The problems treated in this book are drawn from the analytical continuum mechanics literature and incorporate random variables as basic concepts along with mechanical stresses and strains. Such problems are interesting in their own right but they are also meant to inspire further thinking about how stochastic extensions can be formulated before they can be applied to more complex physical systems.

Introduction to Chaos, Fractals and Dynamical Systems
This book offers a fun and enriching introduction to chaos theory, fractals and dynamical systems, and on the applications of fractals to computer generated graphics and image compression. Introduction to Chaos, Fractals and Dynamical Systems particularly focuses on natural and human phenomenon that can be modeled as fractals, using simple examples to explain the theory of chaos and how it affects all of us. Then, using straightforward mathematic and intuitive descriptions, computer generated graphics and photographs of natural scenes are used to illustrate the beauty of fractals and their importance in our world. Finally, the concept of Dynamical Systems, that is, time-dependent systems, the foundation of Chaos and Fractal, is introduced. Everyday examples are again used to illustrate concepts, and the importance of understanding how these vital systems affect our lives. Throughout the fascinating history of the evolution of chaos theory, fractals and dynamical systems is presented, along with brief introductions to the scientists, mathematicians and engineers who created this knowledge.Introduction to Chaos, Fractals and Dynamical Systems contains ample mathematical definitions, representations, discussions and exercises, so that this book can be used as primary or secondary source in home schooling environments. The book is suitable for homeschooling as a focused course on the subject matter or as a classroom supplement for a variety of courses at the late junior high or early high-school level. For example, in addition to a standalone course on Chaos, Fractals and Dynamical Systems (or similar title), this book could be used with the following courses: PrecalculusGeometryComputer programming (e.g. Rust, C, C++, Python, Java, Pascal)Computer graphicsThe text can also be used in conjunction with mathematics courses for undergraduates for non-science majors. The book can also be used for informal and lively family study and discussion. For each chapter, exercises and things to do are included. These activities range from simple computational tasks to more elaborate computer projects, related activities, biographical research and writing assignments.
Limit Theorems for Some Long Range Random Walks on Torsion Free Nilpotent Groups
This book develops limit theorems for a natural class of long range random walks on finitely generated torsion free nilpotent groups. The limits in these limit theorems are L矇vy processes on some simply connected nilpotent Lie groups. Both the limit L矇vy process and the limit Lie group carrying this process are determined by and depend on the law of the original random walk. The book offers the first systematic study of such limit theorems involving stable-like random walks and stable limit L矇vy processes in the context of (non-commutative) nilpotent groups.

Boundary Value Problems and Hardy Spaces for Elliptic Systems with Block Structure
In this monograph, for elliptic systems with block structure in the upper half-space and t-independent coefficients, the authors settle the study of boundary value problems by proving compatible well-posedness of Dirichlet, regularity and Neumann problems in optimal ranges of exponents. Prior to this work, only the two-dimensional situation was fully understood. In higher dimensions, partial results for existence in smaller ranges of exponents and for a subclass of such systems had been established. The presented uniqueness results are completely new, and the authors also elucidate optimal ranges for problems with fractional regularity data. The first part of the monograph, which can be read independently, provides optimal ranges of exponents for functional calculus and adapted Hardy spaces for the associated boundary operator. Methods use and improve, with new results, all the machinery developed over the last two decades to study such problems: the Kato square root estimates and Riesz transforms, Hardy spaces associated to operators, off-diagonal estimates, non-tangential estimates and square functions, and abstract layer potentials to replace fundamental solutions in the absence of local regularity of solutions.
Analysis and Quantum Groups
This volume presents a completely self-contained introduction to the elaborate theory of locally compact quantum groups, bringing the reader to the frontiers of present-day research. The exposition includes a substantial amount of material on functional analysis and operator algebras, subjects which in themselves have become increasingly important with the advent of quantum information theory. In particular, the rather unfamiliar modular theory of weights plays a crucial role in the theory, due to the presence of 'Haar integrals' on locally compact quantum groups, and is thus treated quite extensively The topics covered are developed independently, and each can serve either as a separate course in its own right or as part of a broader course on locally compact quantum groups. The second part of the book covers crossed products of coactions, their relation to subfactors and other types of natural products such as cocycle bicrossed products, quantum doubles and doublecrossed products. Induced corepresentations, Galois objects and deformations of coactions by cocycles are also treated. Each section is followed by a generous supply of exercises. To complete the book, an appendix is provided on topology, measure theory and complex function theory.
Evaluating What Works

Trotter-Kato Approximations of Stochastic Differential Equations in Infinite Dimensions and Applications
This is the first comprehensive book on Trotter-Kato approximations of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) in infinite dimensions and applications. This research monograph brings together the varied literature on this topic since 1985 when such a study was initiated. The author provides a clear and systematic introduction to the theory of Trotter-Kato approximations of SDEs and also presents its applications to practical topics such as stochastic stability and stochastic optimal control. The theory assimilated here is developed slowly and methodically in digestive pieces. The book begins with a motivational chapter introducing several different models that highlight the importance of the theory on abstract SDEs that will be considered in the subsequent chapters. The author next introduces the necessary mathematical background and then leads the reader into the main discussion of the monograph, namely, the Trotter-Kato approximations of many classes of SDEs in Hilbert spaces, Trotter-Kato approximations of SDEs in UMD Banach spaces and some of their applications. Most of the results presented in the main chapters appear for the first time in a book form. The monograph also contains many illustrative examples on stochastic partial differential equations and one in finance as an application of the Trotter-Kato formula. The key steps are included in all proofs which will help the reader to get a real insight into the theory of Trotter-Kato approximations and its use. This book is intended for researchers and graduate students in mathematics specializing in probability theory. It will also be useful to numerical analysts, engineers, physicists and practitioners who are interested in applying the theory of stochastic evolution equations. Since the approach is based mainly in semigroup theory, it is accessible to a wider audience including non-specialists in stochastic processes.

Mathematical Analysis: A Very Short Introduction
Very Short Introductions: Brilliant, sharp, inspiring The 17th-century calculus of Newton and Leibniz was built on shaky foundations, and it wasn't until the 18th and 19th centuries that mathematicians--especially Bolzano, Cauchy, and Weierstrass--began to establish a rigorous basis for the subject. The resulting discipline is now known to mathematicians as analysis. This book, aimed at readers with some grounding in mathematics, describes the nascent evolution of mathematical analysis, its development as a subject in its own right, and its wide-ranging applications in mathematics and science, modelling reality from acoustics to fluid dynamics, from biological systems to quantum theory. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.

Among the topics covered are asymptotic analysis; conformal mapping and the Riemann mapping theory; the Euler gamma function, the Riemann zeta function, and a proof of the prime number theorem; elliptic functions, and modular forms. The final chapter gives the first detailed account in textbook format of the recent solution to the sphere packing problem in dimension 8, published by Maryna Viazovska in 2016 -- a groundbreaking proof for which Viazovska was awarded the Fields Medal in 2022. The book is suitable for self-study by graduate students or advanced undergraduates with an interest in complex analysis and its applications, or for use as a textbook for graduate mathematics classes, with enough material for 2-3 semester-long classes. Researchers in complex analysis, analytic number theory, modular forms, and the theory of sphere packing, will also find much to enjoy in the text, including new material not found in standard textbooks.

Flows on Compact Surfaces
This textbook offers a uniquely accessible introduction to flows on compact surfaces, filling a gap in the existing literature. The book can be used for a single semester course and/or for independent study. It demonstrates that covering spaces provide a suitable and modern setting for studying the structure of flows on compact surfaces. The thoughtful treatment of flows on surfaces uses topology (especially covering spaces), the classification of compact surfaces, and Euclidean and hyperbolic rigid motions to establish structural theorems that describe flows on surfaces generally. Several of the topics from dynamical systems that appear in this book (e.g., fixed points, invariant sets, orbits, almost periodic points) also appear in the many subareas of dynamical systems. The book successfully presents the reader with a self-contained introduction to dynamical systems or an expansion of one's existing knowledge of the field. Prerequisites include completion of a graduate-level topology course; a background in dynamical systems is not assumed.
Monogenic Functions in Spaces with Commutative Multiplication and Applications
This monograph develops a theory of continuous and differentiable functions, called monogenic functions, in the sense of Gateaux functions taking values in some vector spaces with commutative multiplication. The study of these monogenic functions in various commutative algebras leads to a discovery of new ways of solving boundary value problems in mathematical physics. The book consists of six parts: Part I presents some preliminary notions and introduces various concepts of differentiable mappings of vector spaces. Part II - V is devoted to the study of monogenic functions in various spaces with commutative multiplication, namely, three dimensional commutative algebras with two-dimensional radical, finite-dimensional commutative associative algebras, infinite-dimensional vector spaces associated with the three-dimensional Laplace equation and infinite-dimensional vector spaces associated with axial-symmetric potential fields. Part VI presents some boundary value problems for axial-symmetric potential fields and develops effective analytic methods of solving these boundary value problems with various applications in mathematical physics. Graduate students and researchers alike benefit from this book.
