Beyond Sobolev and Besov

Springer 出版
2021/03/31 出版

This book investigates the close relation between quite sophisticated function spaces, the regularity of solutions of partial differential equations (PDEs) in these spaces and the link with the numerical solution of such PDEs. It consists of three parts. Part I, the introduction, provides a quick guide to function spaces and the general concepts needed. Part II is the heart of the monograph and deals with the regularity of solutions in Besov and fractional Sobolev spaces. In particular, it studies regularity estimates of PDEs of elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic type on non smooth domains. Linear as well as nonlinear equations are considered and special attention is paid to PDEs of parabolic type. For the classes of PDEs investigated a justification is given for the use of adaptive numerical schemes. Finally, the last part has a slightly different focus and is concerned with traces in several function spaces such as Besov- and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces, but also in quite general smoothness Morrey spaces. The book is aimed at researchers and graduate students working in regularity theory of PDEs and function spaces, who are looking for a comprehensive treatment of the above listed topics.

Quantitative Portfolio Management

Springer 出版
2021/03/31 出版

This self-contained book presents the main techniques of quantitative portfolio management and associated statistical methods in a very didactic and structured way, in a minimum number of pages. The concepts of investment portfolios, self-financing portfolios and absence of arbitrage opportunities are extensively used and enable the translation of all the mathematical concepts in an easily interpretable way. All the results, tested with Python programs, are demonstrated rigorously, often using geometric approaches for optimization problems and intrinsic approaches for statistical methods, leading to unusually short and elegant proofs. The statistical methods concern both parametric and non-parametric estimators and, to estimate the factors of a model, principal component analysis is explained. The presented Python code and web scraping techniques also make it possible to test the presented concepts on market data. This book will be useful for teaching Masters students and for professionals in asset management, and will be of interest to academics who want to explore a field in which they are not specialists. The ideal pre-requisites consist of undergraduate probability and statistics and a familiarity with linear algebra and matrix manipulation. Those who want to run the code will have to install Python on their pc, or alternatively can use Google Colab on the cloud. Professionals will need to have a quantitative background, being either portfolio managers or risk managers, or potentially quants wanting to double check their understanding of the subject.

tp1.2 A continuing inquiry into the Foundations of the Science of Physics

Ingram 出版
2021/03/31 出版

Physics, as a science, must be able to describe the location of material objects, their movements, and the forces involved. Following on tp1.1, this work addresses the task of location starting with the mathematical objects in a three dimensional set of vectors. The reader is taken as intelligent, interested in Physics, but perhaps without a strong foundation in Mathematics. The topic is developed as a dialog between three friends. While addition in the set of vectors is given axiomatically, the operation itself is not formulated, a proper formulation of which the friends finally accept. The interplay between geometry and algebra becomes part of the discussion. Subtraction, not axiomatic, follows. Three types of multiplication become apparent (inner, cross, outer). Their various combinations are summarized in a large table of vectorial identities. With the definition of division in the set of vectors, the friends recognize that they have constructed an algebra. With an algebra comes equations, and the quest for solutions. The friends, with no little difficulty, find all solutions of vectorial algebraic equations which they display in a second table. Matrices are introduced, so also equations with matrices. The friends find comprehensive solutions for these, both for the unknown vector, and for the matrix itself. These mathematical constructions, however, cannot apply directly to science of Physics. The friends discuss what restrictions need to be made, and how the restricted structures may then be made into a proper instrument for describing physical locations. The restrictions involve material and spatial references which result in a fundamental duality in observation and the important physical principle of non-collocation. The Foundation for Theoretical Physics is dedicated to advancing a science of Physics without contradictions.

An Introduction to Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis Second Edition

J N,Reddy  著
Ingram 出版
2021/03/30 出版

The second edition of An Introduction to Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis has the same objective as the first edition, namely, to facilitate an easy and thorough understanding of the details that are involved in the theoretical formulation, finite element model development, and solutions of nonlinear problems. The book offers an easy-to-understand treatment of the subject of nonlinear finite element analysis, which includes element development from mathematical models and numerical evaluation of the underlying physics. The new edition is extensively reorganized and contains substantial amounts of new material. Chapter 1 in the second edition contains a section on applied functional analysis. Chapter 2 on nonlinear continuum mechanics is entirely new. Chapters 3 through 8 in the new edition correspond to Chapter 2 through 8 of the first edition, but with additional explanations, examples, and exercise problems. Material on time dependent problems from Chapter 8 of the first edition is absorbed into Chapters 4 through 8 of the new edition. Chapter 9 is extensively revised and it contains up to date developments in the large deformation analysis of isotropic, composite and functionally graded shells. Chapter 10 of the first edition on material nonlinearity and coupled problems is reorganized in the second edition by moving the material on solid mechanics to Chapter 12 in the new edition and material on coupled problems to the new chapter, Chapter 10, on weak-form Galerkin finite element models of viscous incompressible fluids. Finally, Chapter 11 in the second edition is entirely new and devoted to least-squares finite element models of viscous incompressible fluids. Chapter 12 of the second edition is enlarged to contain finite element models of viscoelastic beams. In general, all of the chapters of the second edition contain additional explanations, detailed example problems, and additional exercise problems. Although all of the segments are in Fortran, the logic used in these Fortran programs is transparent and can be used in Matlab or C++ versions of the same. Thus the new edition more than replaces the first edition, and it is hoped that it is acquired by the library of every institution of higher learning as well as serious finite element analysts. The book may be used as a textbook for an advanced course (after a first course) on the finite element method or the first course on nonlinear finite element analysis. A solutions manual is available on request from the publisher to instructors who adopt the book as a textbook for a course.

Laplacian Growth on Branched Riemann Surfaces

Springer 出版
2021/03/29 出版

This book studies solutions of the Polubarinova-Galin and L繹wner-Kufarev equations, which describe the evolution of a viscous fluid (Hele-Shaw) blob, after the time when these solutions have lost their physical meaning due to loss of univalence of the mapping function involved. When the mapping function is no longer locally univalent interesting phase transitions take place, leading to structural changes in the data of the solution, for example new zeros and poles in the case of rational maps. This topic intersects with several areas, including mathematical physics, potential theory and complex analysis. The text will be valuable to researchers and doctoral students interested in fluid dynamics, integrable systems, and conformal field theory.

Discovering Dynamical Systems Through Experiment and Inquiry

Ingram 出版
2021/03/28 出版

Discovering Dynamical Systems Through Experiment and Inquiry differs from most texts on dynamical systems by blending the use of computer simulations with inquiry-based learning (IBL). IBL is an excellent tool to move students from merely remembering the material to deeper understanding and analysis. This method relies on asking students questions first, rather than presenting the material in a lecture. Another unique feature of this book is the use of computer simulations. Students can discover examples and counterexamples through manipulations built into the software. These tools have long been used in the study of dynamical systems to visualize chaotic behavior. We refer to this unique approach to teaching mathematics as ECAP--Explore, Conjecture, Apply, and Prove. ECAP was developed to mimic the actual practice of mathematics in an effort to provide students with a more holistic mathematical experience. In general, each section begins with exercises guiding students through explorations of the featured concept and concludes with exercises that help the students formally prove the results. While symbolic dynamics is a standard topic in an undergraduate dynamics text, we have tried to emphasize it in a way that is more detailed and inclusive than is typically the case. Finally, we have chosen to include multiple sections on important ideas from analysis and topology independent from their application to dynamics.

Visualizing Linear Models

W D,Brinda  著
Springer 出版
2021/03/22 出版

This book provides a visual and intuitive coverage of the core theory of linear models. Designed to develop fluency with the underlying mathematics and to build a deep understanding of the principles, it's an excellent basis for a one-semester course on statistical theory and linear modeling for intermediate undergraduates or graduate students. Three chapters gradually develop the essentials of linear model theory. They are each preceded by a review chapter that covers a foundational prerequisite topic. This classroom-tested work explores two distinct and complementary types of visualization: the "observations picture" and the "variables picture." To improve retention of material, this book is supplemented by a bank of ready-made practice exercises for students. These are available for digital or print use.

Financial Literacy and Stock Market Participation

Ingram 出版
2021/03/19 出版

The goal of this Master thesis is to examine the advantages and disadvantages of advanced Machine Learning algorithms compared to traditional econometric methods. More specifically, the predictive performance, interpretability and possibilities for casual inference of various tree-based-methods will be compared to the well-established linear regression models. For this purpose, the Stock Market Participation puzzle, which was originally examined by van Rooij, Lusardi, and Alessie (2007) using OLS and IVGMM regressions, will be used for the empirical part of the thesis. The performance of each model is determined by the ROC curve and the according AUC value. Moreover, measures for variable significance are exploited like Feature importance and Permutation Feature importance, which prove the substantial role of financial literacy and income for investing. Albeit Decision Tree and Random Forest models show similar results to the linear models even after optimization, the optimized XGBoost model appears to excel in the majority of cases. This is confirmed by the Diebold-Mariano test and cross-validation.

Cultural Manifold Analysis on National Character

Springer 出版
2021/03/08 出版

This book first presents an overview of the history of a national character survey by the Institute of Statistical Mathematics that has been conducted for more than 65 years. The Japanese National Character Survey, launched in 1953, is a rare longitudinal survey in the world of survey research based on rigorous statistical sampling theory, motivating other countries to launch similar longitudinal surveys, including the General Social Survey (GSS), the Allgemeine Bev繹lkerungsumfrage der Sozialwissenschaften (ALLBUS, German General Social Survey (GGSS)), Eurobarometer, and others. Since the early 1970s, the Japanese survey has been extended as a cross-national survey for more advanced research of the Japanese national character in a comparative context. Second, the book explains the paradigm of cross-national studies called the Cultural Manifold Analysis (CULMAN), developed in the longitudinal and cross-national surveys, with practical examples of analysis. This explanation will helphelps a wide range of readers to better understand the cross-national comparative surveys of attitudes, opinion, and social values as basic information for evidence-based policymaking and research.

Nonlinear Optimization

Ingram 出版
2021/02/28 出版

Optimization is the act of obtaining the "best" result under given circumstances. In design, construction, and maintenance of any engineering system, engineers must make technological and managerial decisions to minimize either the effort or cost required or to maximize benefits. There is no single method available for solving all optimization problems efficiently. Several optimization methods have been developed for different types of problems. The optimum-seeking methods are mathematical programming techniques (specifically, nonlinear programming techniques).Nonlinear Optimization: Models and Applications presents the concepts in several ways to foster understanding. Geometric interpretation: is used to re-enforce the concepts and to foster understanding of the mathematical procedures. The student sees that many problems can be analyzed, and approximate solutions found before analytical solutions techniques are applied. Numerical approximations: early on, the student is exposed to numerical techniques. These numerical procedures are algorithmic and iterative. Worksheets are provided in Excel, MATLAB(R), and Maple(TM) to facilitate the procedure. Algorithms: all algorithms are provided with a step-by-step format. Examples follow the summary to illustrate its use and application. Nonlinear Optimization: Models and Applications: Emphasizes process and interpretation throughout Presents a general classification of optimization problems Addresses situations that lead to models illustrating many types of optimization problems Emphasizes model formulations Addresses a special class of problems that can be solved using only elementary calculus Emphasizes model solution and model sensitivity analysis About the author: William P. Fox is an emeritus professor in the Department of Defense Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School. He received his Ph.D. at Clemson University and has taught at the United States Military Academy and at Francis Marion University where he was the chair of mathematics. He has written many publications, including over 20 books and over 150 journal articles. Currently, he is an adjunct professor in the Department of Mathematics at the College of William and Mary. He is the emeritus director of both the High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling and the Mathematical Contest in Modeling.

Lebesgue Integral

Birkhauser 出版
2021/02/26 出版

This book presents a compact and self-contained introduction to the theory of measure and integration. The introduction into this theory is as necessary (because of its multiple applications) as difficult for the uninitiated. Most measure theory treaties involve a large amount of prerequisites and present crucial theoretical challenges. By taking on another approach, this textbook provides less experienced readers with material that allows an easy access to the definition and main properties of the Lebesgue integral. The book will be welcomed by upper undergraduate/early graduate students who wish to better understand certain concepts and results of probability theory, statistics, economic equilibrium theory, game theory, etc., where the Lebesgue integral makes its presence felt throughout. The book can also be useful to students in the faculties of mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, life sciences, as an introduction to a more in-depth study of measure theory.

Naive Set Theory

Ingram 出版
2021/02/26 出版

Halmos begins, "Every mathematician agrees that every mathematician must know some set theory; the disagreement begins in trying to decide how much is some. This book contains my answer ... with the minimum of philosophical discourse and logical formalism". The mathematician, scientist, or engineer who needs to know the facts of set theory will find this crisp, clear, concise book, by a master expositor, ideal. This book "Naive Set Theory" uses the language and notation of ordinary informal mathematics to state the basic set-theoretic facts which a beginning student of advanced mathematics needs to know... Because of the informal method of presentation, the book is eminently suited for use as a textbook or for self-study. The reader should derive from this volume a maximum of understanding of the theorems of set theory and of their basic importance in the study of mathematics.

Applied Mathematics for Environmental Problems

Springer 出版
2021/02/25 出版

This book contains some contributions presented at the Applied Mathematics for Environmental Problems minisymposium during the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) held July 15-19, 2019 in Valencia, Spain. The first paper addresses a simplified physical wildfire spread model, based on partial differential equations solved with finite element methods and integrated into a GIS to provide a useful and efficient tool. The second paper focuses on one of the causes of the unpredictable behavior of wildfire, fire-spotting, through a statistical approach. The third paper addresses low -level wind shear which represents one of the most relevant hazards during aircraft takeoff and landing. It presents an experimental wind shear alert system that is based on predicting wind velocities obtained from the Harmonie-Arome model. The last paper addresses the environmental impact of oil reservoirs. It presents high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin formulation combined with high-order diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta schemes to solve one-phase and two-phase flow problems through porous media. All the contributions collected in this volume are interesting examples of how mathematics and numerical modelling are effective tools in the field of environmental problems.

Game Theory and Fisheries Management

Springer 出版
2021/02/20 出版

This book is the first to present in a systematic manner the application of game theory to fisheries management at both international and national levels. Strategic interaction among fishers and nations exploiting fishery resources is an inescapable fact of life. This has long been recognized at the international level, and is becoming increasingly recognized at the national/regional level. It follows, therefore, that, in order to be able to analyse effectively the management of these resources, the theory of strategic interaction ̶ game theory ̶ must be brought to bear. In this book the step-by-step development of the game theory is accompanied by numerous applications to the real world of fisheries management policy. As such, it is designed to appeal to policy makers and stakeholders, as well as to graduate students in Economics.

Due Date-Related Scheduling with Two Agents

Yunqiang,Yin  著
Springer 出版
2021/02/20 出版

This book provides an introduction to the models, methods, and results of some due date-related scheduling problems in the field of multiagent scheduling. In multiagent scheduling, two or more agents share a common processing resource and each agent wants to optimize its own objective function with respect to its own set of jobs. Since the agents have conflicting objective functions, they have to negotiate among themselves with regard to sharing the common resource to optimize their own objective functions. A key feature of due date-related scheduling concerns the way in which due dates are considered: they can be given parameters or decision variables. For the former case, the motivation stems from the need to improve inventory and production management. For the latter case, due date assignment becomes a challenging issue since the decision-maker has to balance inventory holding costs against the benefits of fulfifilling orders in time.As for due dates, this book addresses the following three different scenarios: (i) The due dates of the jobs from either one or both of the two agents are decision variables, which are determined using some due date assignment models; (ii) The due dates of jobs in each job set are considered as given parameters, whereas which due date corresponds to a given job needs to determine; and (iii) The due date of each job is exogenously given. When the last case is involved, the objective function of each agent is related to the number of just-in-time jobs that are completed exactly on their due dates. For each considered scenario, depending on the model settings, and on the objective function of each agent, this book addresses the complexity, and the design of efficient exact or approximated algorithms. This book aims at introducing the author's research achievements in due date-related scheduling with two agents. It is written for researchers and Ph.D. students working in scheduling theory and other members of scientific community who are interested in recent scheduling models. Our goal is to enable the reader to know about some new achievements on this topic.

Chance, Logic and Intuition

Steven,Tijms  著
Ingram 出版
2021/02/17 出版

Chance rules our daily lives in many different ways. From the outcomes of the lottery to the outcomes of medical tests, from the basketball court to the court of law. The ways of chance are capricious. Bizarre things happen all the time. Nevertheless, chance has a logic of its own. It obeys the rules of probability. But if you open a standard book on probability, you may very well feel far removed from everyday life. Abstract formulas and mathematical symbols stare back at you with almost every turn of the page. This book introduces you to the logic of chance without the use of mathematical formulas or symbols. In Part One, you will meet the fascinating pioneers of the mathematics of probability, including Galileo Galilei and Blaise Pascal. Their stories will introduce you, step by step, to the basics of probability. In Part Two, various examples in all areas of daily life will show you how chance defies our expectations time and again. But armed with the basic rules of probability and a good dose of inventiveness, you will be able to unravel the counter-intuitive logic of chance.

Quantitative Economics with R

Vikram,Dayal  著
Springer 出版
2021/02/09 出版

This book provides a contemporary treatment of quantitative economics, with a focus on data science. The book introduces the reader to R and RStudio, and uses expert Hadley Wickham's tidyverse package for different parts of the data analysis workflow. After a gentle introduction to R code, the reader's R skills are gradually honed, with the help of "your turn" exercises. At the heart of data science is data, and the book equips the reader to import and wrangle data, (including network data). Very early on, the reader will begin using the popular ggplot2 package for visualizing data, even making basic maps. The use of R in understanding functions, simulating difference equations, and carrying out matrix operations is also covered. The book uses Monte Carlo simulation to understand probability and statistical inference, and the bootstrap is introduced. Causal inferenceis illuminated using simulation, data graphs, and R code for applications with real economic examples, covering experiments, matching, regression discontinuity, difference-in-difference, and instrumental variables. The interplay of growth related data and models is presented, before the book introduces the reader to time series data analysis with graphs, simulation, and examples. Lastly, two computationally intensive methods--generalized additive models and random forests (an important and versatile machine learning method)--are introduced intuitively with applications. The book will be of great interest to economists--students, teachers, and researchers alike--who want to learn R. It will help economics students gain an intuitive appreciation of applied economics and enjoy engaging with the material actively, while also equipping them with key data science skills.
