Travel Artist

Goff Books 出版
2025/08/30 出版

Travel Artist: Sketchbook Drawings and True Stories from the Road is an illustrated travelogue drawn from 20 years of travel to 50 countries, and from the scores of sketchbooks and journals created along the way. A sketchbook changes travel, from checking off an itinerary checklist and Instagram moments to a journey of discovery: about places, about people, about yourself. Richards' stories are told through hundreds of full color and black and white travel sketches and essays that cross the globe, from the savannahs of Kenya to the Central Highlands of Vietnam, from the Hemingway haunts of Key West to the customs interrogation room of the Havana airport. The stories and drawings pull the reader into the transformational experience of international travel, and the added richness and creative rush that closer observation and on-location sketching brings to it. The book is a must-have for creatives, for urban sketchers, and for anyone with an explorer's heart and a creative itch.

Hometown Mississippi

University P 出版
2025/08/29 出版

Hometown Mississippi offers an intimate glimpse into thirty Mississippi towns through the lens of author, photographer, and artist Melody Golding. In this stunning collection, Golding captures the essence of her state in the summer of 2024, blending photography and personal exploration to create a colorful and contemporary portrait of Mississippi. From the hills in the north to the sandy shores of the south, from the Piney Woods to the Mississippi River towns and the storied Mississippi Delta, Golding's journey takes readers off the beaten path, away from interstates, and along the winding back roads and highways that once served as the main thoroughfares for these unique small-town destinations. Each town Golding visits has its own special attractions, including historical landmarks, cultural offerings, recreational spaces, colleges and universities, scenic natural beauty, tourist attractions, and ties to some of the many celebrities Mississippi calls its own. All are distinct, yet all share a common pride in their local identity. Within the pages of this book, more than fifty Mississippians reflect on their connection to the Magnolia State, offering heartfelt insights into the experiences, traditions, and character of their communities. With warmth and generosity, Mississippians ranging from Morgan Freeman to Marty Stuart to US Senator Roger Wicker, from university presidents to local business owners, share what it means to call Mississippi home.

The Weekender Tucson

Lebeld Soloviev 出版
2025/08/29 出版

Nestled between five mountain ranges, Tucson is a city where centuries of Indigenous, Spanish, and frontier heritage meet a thriving modern spirit. Adobe walls and mission steeples recall its deep history, while lively neighborhoods, world-class learning institutions, and a vibrant arts scene reflect its evolution. The city's rhythm is painted in desert light and long shadows. Colorful murals splash across buildings, mesquite smoke curls into the evening air, and towering saguaros keep silent watch. Tucson is a place of balance: stillness and energy, roots and vision, sun and shadows. This volume offers a visual narrative unfolding over four days through the city, captured by photographer Erica Connolly. We begin in the bright alleys of Barrio Viejo, wander into the eclectic charm of Fourth Avenue, pause among the blooms in desert gardens, and trace the lines of modern architecture rising beside centuries-old traditions. Recognized as the first UNESCO City of Gastronomy in the United States, Tucson delights the senses not only through its landscapes but also its culinary heritage. As the desert sky deepens into sunset and stars flood the horizon, the city unfolds--layered, vibrant, and alive.

Silver Screen Cities Amsterdam & Brussels

2025/08/26 出版

Amsterdam and Brussels are great cities for cinema-going.David Kintore explores Amsterdam by visiting cinemas such as Studio K, The Movies, EYE Film Institute, the magnificent Path矇 Tuschinski, and many more. He explores Brussels with visits to cinema gems including Arenberg, Cinemathek, Vend繫me, Flagey Studio 5, Styx and Nova.Written by a filmgoer who loves wandering around cities as much as he enjoys sitting in cinemas watching films, the Silver Screen Cities books spring from the notion that visiting cinemas and their neighbourhoods is a wonderful way of getting to know different cities. The books in the Silver Screen Cities series are a celebration of city cinema-going.Unlike conventional collections of film reviews, the Silver Screen Cities books are about the whole experience surrounding cinema-going rather than just a series of film reviews. The film reviews in the Silver Screen Cities books sometimes take up only one or two paragraphs in a chapter. That's because city cinema-going is about much more than just the film that is being shown. It's about the cinema itself and the audience watching the film. It's about the unique vibe of different cities with their varied array of bars, caf矇s, restaurants and art museums. And it's about the feeling of freedom that comes from wandering a city's streets before or after seeing a film.

Frommer's Spain

Peter,Barron  著
FrommerMedia 出版
2025/08/25 出版

Frommer's books aren't "written" by A.I., like so many others, or by travel writers who simply pop in briefly to a destination and then consider the job done. We use seasoned, locally-based journalists like Peter Barron (formerly of the BBC), along with writers who live part-time in Spain, like Patricia Harris, David Lyon and Murray Stewart. The four of them spent months checking out all of Spain's best hotels, attractions, shops, wineries, and restaurants in person, so they could offer authoritative, candid reviews that will help you find the venues that suit your tastes and budget. In short, use this book and you'll be eating in the places most tourists don't know about, visiting top attractions at times when the crowds are at their thinnest, and patronizing the bars and clubs Spaniards hold dear. Whether you're partying the night away in the Balearic Islands, exploring architecture and history in Barcelona or Bilbao, or walking the Camino de Santiago, this book will make your vacation better. We include advice the tourist board wouldn't approve of: which sites to skip, how to avoid the crowds, and how to stretch your travel budget further, whether you're on a lavish honeymoon or backpacking it.Inside the guide: Full-color photos and helpful maps, including a detachable foldout mapDetailed itineraries for planning your trip to suit your schedule and interests (and help you avoid lines and crowds)Candid reviews of the best restaurants, historic sights, museums, tours, shops, and experiences―and no-punches-pulled info on the ones not worth your time and moneyAccurate, up-to-date info on transportation, useful websites, telephone numbers, and moreCompelling cultural information so that you'll better understand the history, cuisine, and traditions of SpainBudget-planning help with the lowdown on prices and ways to save money, whether you're traveling on a shoestring or in the lap of luxuryAbout Frommer's: There's a reason Frommer's has been the most trusted name in travel for more than 65 years. Arthur Frommer created the best-selling guide series in 1957 to help American servicemen fulfill their dreams of travel in Europe, and since then, we have published thousands of titles, become a household name, and helped millions upon millions of people realize their own dreams of seeing our planet. A Traveller's Companion to Istanbul

Interlink Books 出版
2025/08/24 出版

The history of the city where East meets West spans 28 centuries. Istanbul, the ancient and timeless heart of modern Turkey, is a city with its mythological origins in the seventh century BC. Founded as Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire by Constantine the Great, during the 1000-year Byzantine Empire that followed it was a city of fabled riches. After its fall to the Turks in 1453, the splendors of the Ottoman Empire kept it glorious. Drawing on diaries, letters, memoirs, histories and novels from the sixth-century AD onwards, this inspiring anthology recreates the vanished glories of the city, and includes: coronation of a Byzantine emperor; funeral of a sultan; triumphal entry of Mehmet the Conqueror; building of the S羹leymaniye, the most magnificent of the city's mosques; harems in the sixteenth century; death of Atat羹rk in 1938; Byzantine holy relics; Turkish baths and coffee-houses. All this and much more is vividly described in the words of those who were actually there, to offer an original and indispensable companion for the discriminating traveller.

We had tried twice before to climb Mont Blanc - with Scharlie in 1994 and with my Italian friend Dimitri in 1996. This time I didn't want to fail again and had asked my friend Roger Mear, a distinguished climber and expeditioner and professional mountain guide, to "guide" me up the mountain. The plan was to spend a few days climbing with Scharlie to get fit and acclimatise before joining Roger. Cathy, Scharlie's friend from Cambridge who ran the Cambridge Festival, decided she'd join us and accompany Scharlie on part of the Tour de Mont Blanc while Roger and Steve were climbing. Despite rain and mist, and Scharlie's boots giving out on our way to do a route on the Aiguille du Peigne, we managed a couple of good training routes. Steve and Roger had a good day on a training route on Mont Blanc du Tacul before attempting Mont Blanc via Mont Maudit. Unfortunately we were beaten back by bad weather. Rather than repeat the same route Roger decided we could reach Mont Blanc via the blunt snow ridge of the D繫mes de Miage. Unlike other standard ways, we had this route to ourselves, which was delightful. Meanwhile, Scharlie and Cathy three legs of the Tour de Mont Blanc from Les Contamines to Courmayeur. The journal also include photos from Steve's previous climbing trip to Chamonix with a party of Italian climbers in 1996.

The High Tatras form part of the Carpathian mountain range lying between Poland and Slovakia. The Tatra National Park (Tatransk羸 n獺rodn羸) was founded in 1948. There are 29 peaks over 2,500m. I found the name romantic and had wanted to visit them for some time until the opportunity arose. Peter, a post-doctoral student at Cambridge, and he and his wife Paulina and baby Palko lived in our house in Cambridge for a few months in 2007 and subsequently invited us to visit them in Bratislava.. Slovakia is green and hilly. The woods, cover the hills like a quilt, and meet the sloping fields in soft wavy lines. The Tatras are different. They are 'young' mountains formed by Alpine-Himalayan folding and thrusting and subsequently shaped by ice age glaciation. The core is a crystalline massif covered by a thick layer of sedimentary rocks. For the hiker and climber they are something of a 'hidden gem', with their impressive spiky summits. The jewel is Kriv獺ň (2,495 m), and its famous curved profile is an important symbol in Slovak culture. Rysy, straddles the border between Slovakia and Poland, and is the Poland's tallest peak. Lomnicky stit is the second highest peak in the High Tatras after Gerlach (2,655m). We climbed all three. We also get a feel for the history of a central European country emerging from Soviet dominance, now looking prosperous and modern.

In the summer of 1995 we made an epic 2000 mile journey to the Alps and back, keeping to the high passes that border Italy and Switzerland. It was soon after I'd passed my test and bought a motor bike, a 1000cc BMW police bike. We travelled through Burgundy on minor roads down the Yonne Valley from Auxerre to Nolay, where we stayed in a friend's house both on the journey out and back. From Besan癟on we rode through Switzerland over the Forclaz Pass in pouring rain to beautiful sunshine in Chamonix. We skirted the Vanoise National Park, where we'd been the summer before and Mont Cenis where we'd skied the previous winter. Our goal was further south where we planned to walk in the Queyras. But to get there we had to cross the Petit Saint Bernard, walled in by 3 metre snow drifts, the Col de l'Iseran, Mont Cenis and the Col d'Izoard. On reaching the Queyras we met a young man called Michel who invited us to stay at his family home in L'Eychaillon, What we didn't realise, when we agreed to follow him on his motorbike, was that his home was high up above the valley and the only way there was up a switch back dirt road. We left the bike there and went off walking on a mini tour of the Queyras, staying in delightful mountain refuges and dining properly in the French way. We had to race back for a friend's wedding covering 550 miles on the last day, but nevertheless found time to sample the Ecrins national Park and go white water rafting near Brian癟on. It was a great adventure.

Discovering Aotearoa

Milenko,Ros  著
Austin Macauley 出版
2025/08/19 出版

New Zealand, or Aotearoa as the locals refer to it, is a truly remarkable country. Its landscapes range from breathtakingly beautiful, verdant vistas to areas covered in volcanic lava, as much of the country was shaped by volcanic eruptions. Exploring New Zealand is a delight, as it offers an array of short and long hikes and opportunities to venture around on a bike, motorbike, or car. The country has a well-organized public transport system that allows you to effortlessly travel from one end to another using buses, trains, or planes. One of New Zealand's renowned highlights is the rich traditions of its indigenous Maori people. They take immense pride in sharing their customs through delightful cuisine, captivating dances, and the temples where they honour their ancestors. The country is also famous for its fascinating geothermal phenomena, where bubbling geysers, boiling basins, hot lakes, and warm rivers add intrigue to its already stunning landscapes. What makes New Zealand even more special is its inhabitants' genuine friendliness and helpfulness, both Maori and non-Maori (referred to as Kiwis). You'll always feel welcome as the locals go out of their way to assist and make you feel at ease. This warm hospitality is evident in various aspects, including traffic, where pedestrians always have the right of way, and dining establishments, where you'll always be greeted with a friendly smile and top-notch service.

Travels in an Upside-Down World

FriesenPress 出版
2025/08/19 出版

This is a book about discovering China from both historical and personal perspectives. It covers a five-year- period from 1984, when China's modernizations were just taking hold, to 1989 and the student-led Tiananmen protest that culminated in a vicious crackdown and a draconian aftermath. During this time the author taught at a major university of China's Ministry of Public Security in Beijing and worked as a journalist for China's top media outlets, also in Beijing. The book examines aspects of both China's educational system and its approach to covering the news. It contains accounts of travels to all parts of the country, sometimes on the author's own, sometimes with friends and colleagues, and sometimes with his two teenaged daughters joining him from Canada. Featured also is a story of the author and his daughter Katharine being chosen for movie parts shot on location in a remote region of the country, as well as trips with his daughters to other countries, one crossing Asia on the Trans-Siberian Railway and another climbing Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. In his book, the author says every day was an epiphany. Often the result was beyond expectation. The sum effect of his varied experiences in an upside-down world was to turn his own world upside-down, too.

To the Farthest Rock

Mohan,Rakesh  著
2025/08/16 出版

In 1952, at the age of twenty-seven, Mohan Rakesh undertook a journey to south India, travelling by bus, train and steamer along the western coast from Bombay to Kanyakumari. Young and ardent, he dreamt of the wide expanse of sea that would make up for a childhood spent in Amritsar's narrow lanes, and had visions of comely guides who would look kindly upon his wandering. But once he set out from Delhi on a train to Bombay, his visions slipped away and complex reality took over. To the Farthest Rock is a remarkable account of the hope and despair that characterized post-Independence India. Rakesh had only published a few short stories when he quit a teaching job in Shimla in order to travel, but readers who know his later work will recognize his skill with portraits of people and his exceptional ability to render fluctuations of feeling. Set against the verdant coastal landscape of Goa and Kerala, this absorbing travelogue is a fine introduction to the mind of one of Hindi's greatest novelists and playwrights.
