Around the World with a Spare Pair of Jeans
With nothing but a backpack and an open mind, Jean Ramer was ready to turn life on its head. Fed up with a career spent in a classroom of unruly children, Jean decided a change of scenery was in order. The year was 1975, and the Hippie Trail through West and South Asia was a popular route for young people eager for adventure. There began the journey of a lifetime.Departing from London, England, Jean started out in France and Italy, then moved on to Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, and Thailand, before she made it to Australia. However, Jean's journey was not without its setbacks. Travel in the 1970s meant no internet, no GPS, and no easy way to retrieve cash. Access to safe drinking water was not guaranteed. Jean describeswith candour and humour how she tackled obstacle after obstacle as she roamed further into unfamiliar cultures.Although Jean didn't know it at the time, many places she visited were about to go through drastic changes. The Iranian Revolution and the Soviet-Afghan War closed borders and changed the face of Asia. The eventual capture of serial killer Charles Sobhraj, many of whose victims were back-packers travelling on the Hippie Trail at this time, casts her adventures in a whole new light. Jean's writings provide a snapshot into this part of the world during a fascinating era in its history. For adventure lovers, armchair travellers, and everyone in between, Jean Ramer's travel memoir is an eye-opening story of resilience, awe, and self-discovery.

Kashi Ritambhara English Version
'Kolkata resident, the new bride, shares a unique bond with her mother-in-law. Her in-law's home is in Kashi, named "Ritambhara." Holding her mother-in-law's hand, she can explore the Vishwanath Temple and traverse the waters of the Ganges, allowing her to connect with the spiritual ancient India. Kashi weaves tales of Puranas, stories, and the long-standing rise and fall of history in her mind. In the narratives, she finds the discovery of India's soul and the intellectual curiosity of Kashi's Saraswati society. The musical talent in the Banaras household, Dhrupadi, and the melodious notes in her mother-in-law's voice enchant her. It's as if the core of her being leads her to seek the nectar of the past.Suddenly, she becomes frail due to her mother-in-law's departure. In search of her mother's solace, she traverses the streets of Kashi, the Ghats of the Ganges, and the discussions of the Vedas and Upanishads. She rediscovers her beloved mother in her family's historical and religious heritage, which becomes her driving force. The word "Ritambhara" translates to "truth, knowledge, and consciousness." In the continuous shower of love from her mother's tender and affectionate heart and the profound discussions of her scholarly uncle and spiritual teacher, she is submerged. This extraordinary narrative beautifully combines family stories, the bright tales of Kashi, and travel tales, merging the author's quest for identity, reverence, and self-awareness. My Seven Summits
There are seven summits that have captured man's imagination since they were first climbed in 1985 by Dick Bass. They are the seven highest summits on each continent of the globe. It seems easy enough to figure out which mountain would be the highest, but nothing could be further from the truth. Just because Dick Bass wrote a book about it called Seven Summits in which he proclaimed Mt. Kosciuszko in Australia and Mt. Elbrus in Russia were two of the seven summits, doesn't mean he was right, as this book is happy to explain. This is great news because it opens up a world of opportunity. It gives you an itinerary you can work with. For example, rather than climbing Kosciuszko because of its low altitude, you can trade it with New Zealand's Mt. Cook at 12,218 feet, on the outer shelf of the Australasia Continent. Or instead of climbing Elbrus in Russia, you can have the true European climber's experience in Mt. Blanc and the Matterhorn. They're only 40 miles apart.I offer you MY SEVEN SUMMITS. It's a chronological tale beginning with my first climb which was Mt. Everest in 1983; the same year Dick Bass first tried to summit Everest. What I learned from that experience is that no normal human being can pay for do-overs of the seven summits. All it takes beyond grit is time and money. It was a different story for me since my quest stretched over seventeen years before I ran out of time. After Everest there was Denali, then Aconcagua, Mt. Blanc and the Matterhorn, Mt. Cook, Kilimanjaro, and last, but not least, ...Vinson Massif? No! "A stroke is upon me." Yes, I had a massive stroke I had to survive first. There are so many stories to tell in MY SEVEN SUMMITS. Each mountain has its own theme, set to a different beat, in a different culture, about relationships forged while climbing the highest, most dangerous, and most iconic mountains in the world. What you will learn from this story is how falling in love with the Seven Summits can be the salvation of your life. Sharing in the romance feels good. Finding the right partner is sublime.

It blends observations of people, customs, and architecture with personal insight, offering a detailed look at shifting landscapes and cultural intersections. It presents a study of how these values create a civilization that prioritizes stability and cohesion over the assertion of self. Through careful observations of customs, rituals, and social interactions, the work reveals how deeply embedded traditions guide everyday life and foster a sense of belonging that transcends the individual. The narrative enriches the understanding of how these cultural priorities challenge the assumptions of Western thought, especially regarding freedom and identity. The Future of Travel
A leading food and travel journalist depicts and predicts the good, the bad, and the ugly about the future of travel -- and how we can transcend the complications of climate change, AI, and touristification . . . Travel is easier, more accessible, and more tempting than ever before in today's world. But what impact is our globetrotting having on localcommunities and the environment? From his own experiences spending time in countries from Spain to Argentina to Japan, travel writer Daniel Maurer has seen first-hand the impact of growing cultural homogenization and anger at the tourists driving it. Speaking to locals and immigrants, activists and protestors, he hears of the problems of rising living costs, overcrowding, anti-social behaviour and the erosion of local traditions and ways of life caused by overtourism. Some cities already have plans in place to combat it, including tourist taxes, carbon emission targets and airbnb bans, and in the coming years, more will take drastic measures to tackle not only a flood of tourists but of a growing worldwide workforce of "location-independent professionals." Technological advances are also changing the way we interact with the world, and the future promises amazing things from flying cars to VRheadsets to AI travel influencers and chatbots. But there's a constant battle between technology making things more easily accessible, and theneed to reduce human impact on the world. What choices might we make when it comes to travelling in the future, and can we become more impact-conscious, making more sustainable andthoughtful decisions?

Zorba's Parthenon.
In the sleepy Greek fishing village of Telios, life moves at its own pace, somewhere between "ma簽ana" and "maybe next month." But when the village's beloved taverna is forced to close under a ludicrous new "Five-Metre Rule," peace by the sea suddenly becomes a battle for the soul of the community.Peter Barber and his gloriously Greek wife, Alex, came to Telios in search of tranquillity and found everything but. At the heart of their adopted village stood Zorba's Taverna. A ramshackle haven of gossip, grilled sardines, and arguments that always ended with laughter (and too much tsipouro). When bureaucracy shutters its doors, Alex leads a hilariously improbable mission to reopen it as a cooperative, recruiting an unforgettable cast: Theodora the matriarch, Dimitri the philosopher-fisherman, Maria the gossip oracle, Claude the poetic Frenchman, and one mischievous goat with a sense of entitlement. As the villagers rally, bicker, and bake their way through inspections, storms, and each other, Zorba's Parthenon becomes a love letter to Greece itself, a place where everything works, just not the way you expect.Blending memoir and comic fiction, Peter Barber's latest book captures the heart, humour, and humanity of Greek village life: its beauty, its madness, and the impossible charm that keeps you coming back.If it didn't happen this way, it should have.

Thrilling Cities
A CAPTIVATING JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD FROM THE CREATOR OF JAMES BONDIan Fleming's world travels and interests, as well as his journalism and wartime experiences, lent authority to everything he wrote. In 1959, the Sunday Times commissioned Fleming to write a series of dispatches from the world's most beguiling locales. The result was Thrilling Cities, a masterpiece of well-observed travelogue that stands ably alongside the author's Bond canon. From Hong Kong to Honolulu, New York to Naples, he left the bright main streets for the back alleys, abandoning tourist sites in favor of underground haunts, and mingling with celebrities, gangsters and geishas. The result is a series of vivid snapshots of a mysterious, vanished world from a twentieth century Western perspective.Just like his most famous fictional creation, Ian Fleming was a well-traveled man of the world who knew where to go to find excitement, adventure...and danger. In Thrilling Cities, he takes us along on a journey of international intrigue worthy of James Bond.
A Cheesemonger's Tour de France
Longlisted for the 2024 Andr矇 Simon Awards In A Cheesemonger's Tour de France, Ned Palmer wends his way around the country's regions, meeting the remarkable cheesemongers who carry the torch for France's oldest and most treasured traditions. Every French cheese carries an essence of the place where it's made - its history, identity and landscape. Sometimes that's a physical thing, as the hard texture of Comt矇 echoes its mountainous home in the Jura. Other times it's about power and politics - Brie swelling to royal dimensions due to its proximity to the French court, or Camembert gaining national status after being supplied in patriotic boxes to First World War soldiers. Witty, fascinating and endlessly moreish, A Cheesemonger's Tour de France is the perfect guide to a French cheeseboard - and a terrific insight into la Belle R矇publique.
The Rough, the Smooth and the Quirky
In a world grappling with complexity and contradiction, The Rough, the Smooth and the Quirky: Poems for a Complicated World by Oxford-based Anglo-Scottish poet John Webster offers a bold and lyrical response. This compelling collection ventures into contested terrain, guided by the belief that poetry can illuminate difficult truths and foster meaningful dialogue. From a pointed call for Keir Starmer to apologise to Rosie Duffield over the gender debate, to a Shakespearean rebuke of Osama Bin Laden, and a chilling reflection on grooming gang psychology drawn from a 1970s visit to Pakistan - Webster's verses confront uncomfortable realities with wit, insight, and moral clarity. The section Words on the Woke delivers sharp, satirical takes on contemporary identity politics, while No Such Thing as Infidel explores the historical and modern tensions between Islam and the West, suggesting paths toward mutual understanding. In Stanzas on Ukraine, Webster lends poetic solidarity to the Ukrainian struggle, culminating in Ukraine Dreamin', a poignant imagining of reconciliation through the eyes of a Russian dissenter.Yet the collection is not solely political. The opening suite, Ties of the Heart, delves into themes of mental health, mortality, and enduring friendship, with tributes to figures such as Benjamin Zephaniah, John Martyn, E.P. Thompson, Mary Shelley, and the poet's own father. Travel-inspired poems offer vivid glimpses into the world's rich diversity and human experience. Webster's imaginative reach extends to fables where Hitler is spooked by a preminition of The Beatles' Yellow Submarine, and Lord Byron shares reflections with Joe Biden on Afghanistan and the Greek War of Independence. The final section contemplates the personal impact of globalisation, closing with meditative verses that invite reflection and renewal.Written in fluid, rhyming couplets, these poems "tell it like it is" - candid yet compassionate, provocative yet hopeful. The Rough, the Smooth and the Quirky is a literary tonic for turbulent times, inviting readers to laugh, think, and feel their way through the chaos of the modern world.Author's website: www.johnmwebster.co.uk

A Capital Idea
The Capital Hotel of Little Rock, Arkansas, is uniquely beautiful, with its cast-iron fa癟ade and marble lobby, its high-ceilinged rooms, and its rich history. Since its opening in 1876, it has been the stage for the struggles, schemes, and dreams of generations of politicians, debutantes, businesspeople, and newlyweds. A wide variety of owners and visionaries have shaped the hotel's fortunes, including the Yankee entrepreneur who raised its walls, the Italian immigrant family who kept it going in its worst days, the architect who envisioned new life in its venerable bones, and the financiers and craftsmen who brought the Capital to its current glory as a luxury hotel. The story of the Capital Hotel is also the story of Little Rock and of many American cities: built in the commercial boom of the 1870s, in full flower at the turn of the century--then battered by the Depression, optimistic in the postwar era, decrepit by the late 1960s, rejuvenated in the 1980s and 2000s, and now thriving today. This lavishly illustrated volume--recently updated to celebrate the hotel's 150th anniversary--traces the building's lively history, from its origins as a commercial hub to its spectacular renovation into a jewel of downtown Little Rock.
