Butter Chicken in Ludhiana
In Butter Chicken in Ludhiana, Pankaj Mishra captures an India which has shrugged off its sleepy, socialist air, and has become instead kitschy, clamorous and ostentatious. From a convent-educated beauty pageant aspirant to small shopkeepers planning their vacation in London, Pankaj Mishra paints a vivid picture of a people rushing headlong to their tryst with modernity. An absolute classic, this is a witty and insightful account of India's aspirational middle class.

The Sewing Circles of Herat
Ten years ago, Christina Lamb reported on the war the Afghan people were fighting against the Soviet Union. Now, back in Afghanistan, she has written an extraordinary memoir of her love affair with the country and its people. Long haunted by her experiences in Afghanistan, Lamb returned there after last year's attack on the World Trade Centre to find out what had become of the people and places that had marked her life as a young graduate. This time seeing the land through the eyes of a mother and experienced foreign correspondent, Lamb's journey brings her in touch with the people no one else is writing about: the abandoned victims of almost a quarter century of war. 'Of all books about Afghanistan, Christina Lamb's is the most revealing and rewarding...a personal, perceptive and moving account of bravery in the face of staggering difficulties.' Anthony Sattin, Sunday Times 'As an account of how Afghanistan got into its present state, and of the making of the grotesque regime of the Taliban, this book could not possibly be bettered. Brilliant.' Matthew Leeming, Spectator 'Lamb's book combines a love of Afghanistan with a fearless search for the human stories behind the past twenty-three years of war...Her book is not only a necessary education for the Western reader in the political warring that generated the torture, murder and poverty, but also a stirring lament for the country of ruins that was once better known for its poetry and mosques.' James Hopkin, The Times

Summer of '65
Long before the universal popularity and affordability of international travel, and before backpacking throughout Europe became commonplace for American young people, an 18-year-old native Kansan - Kent Earnest - trekked alone from the heartland of America to the heartland of the Middle East, the Holy Land. By car, truck, ship, and train, Kent traveled to Jerusalem and Bethlehem through Southern Europe, and returned through North Africa, completely circumnavigating the Mediterranean Sea. For good measure, he took a short jaunt through the province of Ontario, Canada, on the way home. With necessary frugality that would make Arthur Frommer proud, the richness of experiences far outweighed the austerity he endured on this venture. But the narrative is much deeper than a simple travel story based on a limited budget. It's about people, places, and events, as well as the broad range of emotions Kent felt when he encountered the unexpected. Unlike ordinary trips, this adventure was chock full of frequent and remarkable surprises. By 2012, Kent had visited all 50 U.S. states and all seven continents. But it was this extraordinary 20,000-mile journey in the Summer of '65 that set the foundation for his love of world travel that has lasted a half century. This story is about the trip that began it all. Kent Earnest, a native Kansan and current resident of Dayton, Ohio, is a retired technical writer/editor and businessman who enjoys world travel, national politics, and Kansas University basketball. This is his first book. Publisher's website: http: //sbprabooks.com/KentEarnest
Suspected Hippie in Transit
An unbridled celebration of free spiritWhat was it like to backpack along the international hippie trail fifty years ago? Martin Frumkin's pre-tech, countercultural rucksack romp throughout Asia captures the tumultuous, don't-give-a-damn attitude of such rebellious, nomadic vagabonds as Marco Polo, Ibn Battalu, and Neal Cassady. Martin "tuned in" and "turned on," but chose not to "drop out."In volume 2, Martin continues his quest for "truth, justice, and any way" while immersed in Southeast Asia and the Orient. Avoiding the Burmese junta among Mandalayan-jeweled pagodas, our anti-hero unwittingly flirts with the "Serpent" in Bangkok. Personal discovery of wondrous indigenous subcultures, and temples, beaches, and volcanoes of Java, Bali, and Sumatra morph into the backstreets and Buddhist monasteries of free Hong Kong and Macau. After falling in love in the shadows of the Taiwanese alps, he searches for old Korea under its modern veneer--interrupted by "quick time" measured by the almighty mamazon who watches over her courtesans. Not knowing the laws, values, and mores of foreign cultures, nor bound to those at home, Martin experienced an inexplicable, free-floating freedom. Written in journal form, Suspected Hippie in Transit will empower you to "wake up" and change your life.
