With Love from Bali
With Love from Bali chronicles one woman's six-month soul-searching journey on the island of the Gods. It would be clich矇 if it wasn't so chaotic...By outward appearances, travel influencer Stephanie Huff is living the dream, working her way around the world and sharing her adventures on her popular blog. Yet, years of living out of a suitcase and drifting from place to place have taken a mental toll. After a series of dramatic events and questionable decisions lead to a bedridden illness, she decides to 'press pause' on her life and go to Bali. What follows are a string of disastrous dates, contentious characters, travel mishaps and inexplicable encounters that leave her with more questions than answers. When her mental health continues to plummet, she experiences a reckoning of faith and life lessons in unexpected places.A mix between 'Eat Pray Love' and 'Bridget Jones's Diary', this honest, cringe-worthy and often funny debut memoir will resonate with any wanderer or seeker on their own journey.

Hippie India
In the 1970s many thousands of young persons traveled from Europe to Asia on the Hippie Trail in search of adventure, spiritual enlightenment, and personal discovery. Their sprawling, free-wheeling escapades changed their lives and the places they visited. While the overland route between Amsterdam and Kathmandu no longer exists, its stopovers in India--Pushkar, Rishikesh, Hampi, Goa, and the Pushkar Valley--continue to attract counterculture travelers from throughout the world. And just as the visitors have absorbed experiences and material culture, even spiritual wisdom, from their Indian hosts, so, too, have local residents learned a thing or two from their hippie guests. During the past half century, an intense cultural intermingling has taken place in these distant locales, where lifeways, architectures, and philosophies are exchanged as freely as costumes, music, and hairstyles. This photographic book, the first of its kind, vividly captures the beguiling love affair between East and West in its portrayal of modern-day India and the free-spirited people who travel or reside there--Westerners and Indians, alike. Acclaimed essayist and travel writer Pico Iyer wrote the book foreword entitled "The Long Strange Trip."
Okinawa and Japan’s Southwest Islands
Brand new from Bradt is Okinawa and Japan's Southwest Islands, the sole travel guidebook dedicated to the archipelago stretching from the southern tip of mainland Japan to Taiwan, whose landscapes include award-winning beaches, coral reefs, tropical jungles and ancient forests. This guide contains all the detailed information that travelers need to get the most out of their visit, from accommodation and restaurants to transport and sights. Japan expert Jo Davey complements this with rich context and entertaining insights to help readers understand this fascinating region, covering culture, recipes, architectural highlights, historical episodes and traditional folktales. Japan's Southwest Islands are a remote but rewarding and geographically diverse area that comprises the Satsunan Islands (formed of the Osumi and Amami islands) and the Ryukyu Islands (consisting of the Okinawa, Kerama, Miyako and Yaeyama islands). The capital city of Naha on Okinawa-hontō is a bright and busy hub of history, art, karate and food. Thanks to its many US military bases and post-war occupation by the US, Naha is a fusion of Japanese and American culture. In contrast, the more remote islands preserve traditional Ryukyuan life with festivals, architecture, traditional accommodation and religious sites. Depending where you travel, you can dive with manta rays off Iriomote or kayak along its jungle rivers, hike through Yakushima's ancient forest, search for star sand on Taketomi, pay tribute to the American (and Japanese) fallen of World War II at monuments on Okinawa-hontō, cycle between Miyako's award-winning beaches, take home a chunk of rope from the world's largest tug-of-war (in Naha) or go whalewatching off the Kerama Islands. Wherever you go, the islands' amazing food is found throughout the archipelago and is known for being the world's healthiest cuisine. As well as dedicated chapters covering each island group, the book also provides a glimpse into the 'gateway cities' of Kagoshima, Tokyo and Osaka, with coverage that highlights little-known areas, activities, accommodation and restaurants. Throughout, extensive practical information includes transport, seasonality, itineraries, visas and budgeting. Whether you come for culture or cuisine, karate or nature, diving or trekking, let Bradt's Okinawa and Japan's Southwest Islands be your guide.
Walking the Edo Sanpu
For more than two and a half centuries Dutch merchants in Japan were confined to the fan-shaped island of Dejima in the Bay of Nagasaki. Only once a year were they allowed to leave their golden cage to embar-k on the Edo Sanpu, a 1000-mile journey to present-day Tokyo in order to pay their respects to the shōgun, Japan's absolute ruler.Four of them-Engelbert Kaempfer, Philipp Franz von Siebold, Dirk de Graeff van Polsbroek, and Frederik van Overmeer Fischer-recorded their experience. They describe a country where rivers still run their natural course, and beeches glimmer with gold dust. It is a country filled with beauty everywhere: towering pagodas, exquisite shrines, magnificent temples, opulent palaces, and imposing castles. Populating this captivating landscape is a modest yet idiosyncratic people, a people that never cease to fascinate. Now, almost two centuries after the Edo Sanpu's last chroniclers set out on their long and arduous journey, author and Dutchman William de Lange treads in their footsteps to compare notes.

Shikoku
Yvonne Corpuz was a global leader with a renowned firm headquartered in Japan when an unexpected turn in her career left her aspirations in disarray. Seeking respite, she embarked on the historic Shikoku pilgrimage, a 1,400-kilometre journey, with cherished companions Mayumi and Katsuji. Navigating the ancient route around the perimeter of Shikoku, Japan's most mysterious island, they visited its eighty-eight temples on a rigorous eight-day drive. As Yvonne immersed herself in breathtaking landscapes, revered traditions and age-old customs, what commenced as a sojourn to escape life's disappointments blossomed into a profound journey of the heart, guiding her on the transformative path towards inner serenity and renewal. Shikoku is a compelling account that blends the essence of pilgrimage, the beauty of self-discovery and the enduring allure of Japan's people, culture and heritage. In this fully updated edition, stunning colour photography and illustrations accompany a lyrical narrative to offer a fully immersive experience. The result is an unforgettable and visually charming travelogue that captures the heart and imagination of the seeker and traveller in us all.
Beyond the Snow Leopard
The sighting of snow leopard tracks in the depths of a Ladakhi winter set off a ten-year journey through a land of mountains, Buddhism, wild creatures and adventurers...'You should come with me to Dolpo next year, ' said Ade. No further encouragement was required. Dolpo was the land of the snow leopard immortalised by the American author Peter Matthiessen. Without hesitation I said I was going. I wanted to follow in the footsteps of Matthiessen and I dared to hope that I might see a snow leopard.Australian-based, British-born doctor Bill Crozier sets out to seek the snow leopard in the Himalayas: Ladakh, Nepal and Tibet, and finds adventure, friendship, wonder and enlightenment. His guides are the twentieth-century writers of the Himalayas, Peter Matthiessen (The Snow Leopard), George B. Schaller (Stones of Silence), David Snellgrove (Himalayan Pilgrimage), Eric Shipton (That Untravelled World) and the profound writings of Buddhist monks over the centuries.Beyond the Snow Leopard delves in particular into the ancient land of Dolpo, and journeys to the birthplace of the Buddha at Lumbini. Crozier captures the real side of travelling through this contested and harsh region with friends and family, and relates the joys of a lifetime loving the outdoors and mountains.

Kenya - My Story
I was a middle-aged successful woman who left her marriage to an angry Irish Catholic for a new life in Kenya with a young Romany gypsy lover. What began as a dream turned nightmarish. I owned the African Oasis furniture factory in Mombasa and learned magic from an old juju friend. Then, I met Reiner Moser, a German businessman, whose charm masked a darker side. My lover became entangled in Interpol pursuits involving Reiner's criminal associate, Andreas Koeltz, leading to betrayal and danger.Desperate, I turned to Amin Walji, an MP and casino owner, for help. With Amin's aid, my lover and I, alongside two German friends also deceived by Reiner, fled Nairobi for a dilapidated safari lodge in Namanga, near Tanzania. Abandoned by our German companions, we moved to Kisumu to manage a failing casino for Amin. His sudden death shattered our refuge, prompting us to plan a risky escape after his funeral attended by President Daniel arap Moi.This is a story of survival against betrayal and adversity, a testament to resilience in the face of danger.

The Long Strider in Jehangir's Hindustan
This dual travelogue tells the extraordinary story of a maverick's 5000-milejourney on foot from England to India, across the forbidding Arabian desert andthe treacherous Hindukush mountains, and then his wanderings in Mughal India. In the early 1600s, Thomas Coryate, writer and wanderer, decided to walkfrom his village in Somerset to the Indies-to the court of the 'Great Mogul', Jehangir-and onwards to China. His search was for fame, not fortune-hewanted to be the first Englishman to write about those distant lands. Above all, hewanted to prove himself to his many sceptics in Prince Henry's court, and to thebeautiful Anne Harcourt, whom he loved deeply, only to be hurt.To reach the court of Jehnagir, Coryate survived penury, loneliness, ridicule andextreme hostility; but disillusionment awaited him at the end of his journey: despite her many wonders and charms, he was also shocked and repelled byIndia, and the emperor made a mockery of his dream. Coryate died in the portcity of Surat and was buried there in an obscure grave.Interwoven with the narrative about Coryate's quest is the account of the authors'own travels through the cities and towns the Englishman visited four hundredyears before. In his footsteps, they go to Delhi, Agra (which Coryate saw beforethe Taj was built), Allahabad, Varanasi, Haridwar, Kangra, Mandu, Ajmer, Pushkarand Surat-and discover that while India has changed beyond recognition sinceCoryate first experienced it, in some ways it hasn't changed at all.Part biography, part travelogue, part history, The Long Strider, written withelegance, wit and insight, is a compelling read.

Sailing to the Heart of Japan
Diplomat and long-distance cruiser Nicholas Coghlan had been curious about Japan ever since his father, a veteran of infantry fighting in Italy and Greece, confessed to him a dread of being sent to the Japanese front when the war in Europe ended in the Spring of 1945.Sailing to the Heart of Japan is a voyage of personal discovery as the author's preconceptions are challenged. It's also a unique account of one of the world's least-known but most attractive cruising destinations.Starting from New Zealand, Nicholas and his partner Jenny navigate Bosun Bird, their Vancouver 27, north through Pacific Island nations where memories of war linger. They make their landfall in Kyushu, in southwestern Japan. Over a period of fifteen months, they venture to the remote and depopulated archipelago of Goto Retto in the East China Sea, through Kanmon Kaikyo narrows and into the island-studded Inland Sea.Everywhere - from Kagoshima to Tokyo Bay - Bosun Bird and her crew are met with astonishing kindness and thoughtful conversation. Travel by "yotto" allows them glimpses of an enigmatic land that are rarely offered to more conventional visitors. The book comprises 242 pages, including 54 illustrations, 9 maps, and detailed descriptions of over 60 anchorages/mooring locations, complete with GPS coordinates. Sailing to the heart of Japan is as descriptive as it is informative about this little-known sailing destination.
Cairo Collages
Cairo is a city of collective exhaustion. From the 2011 revolution to Sisi's seizure of power in 2013, like millions of others, Mona Abaza was swallowed by a draining and exhausting daily life of a city caught up in the aftermath of revolt - a daily life that transformed countless people into all-embracing apolitical subjects. Cairo collages narrates four parallel tales about Cairo's urban transformations in the twenty-first century, examining everyday life and resilience after 2013. Weaving personal narrative with incisive theoretical discussions of the quotidian and the everyday, Abaza raises essential sociological questions regarding global orientations pertaining to emerging military urbanism. With reflections on the long hours of commuting to the gated communities in the desert east of Cairo and the daily material lives and social interactions of residents in decaying middle-class buildings, Abaza's collage of landscapes weaves together the transmutations underway in the various Cairene geographies.

Miniature Trip in Japan
In order to convey the appeal of traditional Japanese culture to foreign visitors, works that represent events typical of the Japanese year are collected in the form of a saijiki or almanac of seasonal words. Scoundrels, Villains, & Knaves
From the silver screen to the famous ride at Disneyland and beyond, pirates are everywhere. They appear on television, operate miniature golf courses, and even promote fast food. But have you ever wondered how a relatively small group of criminals from a short period of history came to invade popular culture? Who were pirates, and where do we get our ideas about them?Rigorously examining the phenomenon through the lens of one of its central texts - the Pirates of the Caribbean attractions - Foxx Nolte explores the murky origins and surprising connections of the western world's favorite antiheroes. Each version of the classic attraction is fully analyzed, but the book goes beyond the confines of the theme parks to consider where these myths came from and what they say about us. They are all here, from Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks to Long John Silver, Captain Jack Sparrow, and a band of six plucky kids from Oregon. It's a treasure hunt through three hundred years of popular culture and you'll never look at talking parrots and buried treasure maps the same way again.
Antarctica
Antarctica may seem remote, extreme and perhaps even forbidding. Yet everybody who has visited comes back full of enthusiasm for its otherworldly scenery, amazingly well-adapted wildlife and brings home lasting memories and stunning photos. The author inspires interest in this amazing place while encouraging responsible, informed and sustainable tourism. The book helps you to decide where and when to go, whether to include South Georgia and/or the Falklands, how to read between the lines of an itinerary, which operator to book with and what size of ship will suit you best. It provides practical information about weather, clothing, photography and biosecurity. Antarctica's ice cap stores 90% of the world's freshwater ice, and it is a crucial place for climate monitoring and other scientific research. The author explains the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, and the Madrid and Montreal Protocols, and their implications both for the continent and for visitors on cruise ships. She interprets the formation of icebergs and glaciers, how the climate varies over different parts of Antarctica and how Antarctic ice affects sea levels. The guide covers the history of Antarctica's discovery and exploration, not only the Scott/Amundsen famous race to the South Pole and Shackleton's extraordinary rescue, but also the less-known achievements of Douglas Mawson. The story is updated with Tim Jarvis's recreations of Mawson's and Shackleton's famous journeys, and the 2022 discovery of the Endurance shipwreck, 107 years after the ship was crushed and sank.Use this book to plan your adventure of a lifetime, but be warned: many who visit Antarctica end up trying to return.
The Holy Lands of the Bible
We are currently witnessing yet another war in the Middle East. Conflicts in this region between various groups have been ongoing for thousands of years. At one time there was even a Mongol army here. At various times the same groups have been fighting each other for centuries. With this background, how can this land be called "holy"? The people of Israel were chosen by God to prepare the way for the coming of the world's redeemer, Jesus, and it is Jesus who makes the land holy. This also includes other lands associated with the Bible: Egypt, Jordan, Turkey and Greece - and indeed extends to the whole world. I was privileged to have spent a significant amount of time in these lands, but realised that this involved an obligation to share. This book is a record of my time in these countries in an attempt to share some insights and help in making these lands of the Bible stories come alive, thus enhancing our understanding of the Bible and Jesus. It may also be useful for those who are planning to make a pilgrimage to these lands. Maybe it is no accident that these holy lands attract so much evil. Yet Jesus came to bring healing, forgiveness and peace.

PRAISE for There Are Still Unknown Places Independent Book Review: ...There are a lot of books that emulate the feeling of traveling to a new place; that is even thought of as a condition of success for stories, yet there are very few books that feel like completely living somewhere else. It is a deeply captivating and enriching sensation, and it makes "There Are Still Unknown Places" all the more special. BookTrib: In "There Are Still Unknown Places," Morris makes sure that everything matters and he leaves it all on the playing field. If it isn't the story, it is the characters.
