The Hill of Devi
The novelist E. M. Forster opens the door on life in a remote Maharajah's court in the early twentieth century, a "record of a vanished civilization." Through letters from his time visiting and working there, he introduces us to a 14th century political system in "the oddest corner of the world outside Alice in Wonderland" where the young Maharajah of Devas, "certainly a genius and possibly a saint," led a state centered on spiritual aspirations. The Hill of Devi chronicles Forster's infatuation and exasperation, fascination, and amusement at this idiosyncratic court, leading us with him to its heart and the eight-day festival of Gokul Ashtami, marking the birth of Krishna, where we see His Highness Maharajah Sir Tukoji Rao III dancing before the altar "like David before the Ark."
Three Women of Herat

Thirty Years in the Arctic Regions
In 1845 Sir John Franklin and his expedition, sailing on the Erebus and the Terror, set out in search of the Northwest Passage. In their pursuit of that elusive water route across North America they all perished, their fate remaining unknown for many years. Franklin and his crew inspired a spate of books on exploration in the nineteenth century, and interest in his expedition has revived with the recent discovery of the bodies of several of its members, perfectly preserved by ice for nearly a century and half. Thirty Years in the Arctic Regions, originally published in 1859, is Franklin's own record of his earlier explorations that put the high arctic on the map, and includes his last letter and reports tracing the expedition's last movements. He describes the daily progress of his two overland expeditions from 1818 to 1827, which covered a thousand miles between the Great Slave Lake and the Arctic Ocean and charted fourteen hundred miles of coastline between Cape Beechey in present-day Alaska and Bathurst Inlet, to the north of Hudson Bay. It is a narrative filled with the exhilarating strangeness of everything about the Far North and unimaginable hardship endured heroically. Bil Gilbert's introduction is informed by a first-hand feeling for what Franklin was up against. Several years ago he followed much of the explorer's route, an experience that is described in Our Nature (Nebraska, 1986).
Karnataka
In India, Karnataka State stands first both in the area and production of Arecanut when compared to other states. In Karnataka among the 27 districts, Shimoga district stands first in area under areca cultivation more than 20,000 hectares in 2002. In addition to this, Shimoga district recorded the highest increase in area under Arecanut cultivation in the last decade (1990-91 to 2000-01) as compared to other districts. Karnataka is a state in the south western region of India. It was formed on 1 November 1956, with the passage of the States Reorganisation Act. The recorded history of Karnataka goes back more than two millennia. Several great empires and dynasties have ruled over Karnataka and have contributed greatly to the history, culture and development of Karnataka. Karnataka State has been divided into four revenue divisions, 49 sub-divisions, 30 districts, 176 taluks and 747 hoblies/revenue circles and 5628 gram panchayats for administrative purposes. The state has 281 towns and 7 municipal corporations. Bangalore is the fifth largest urban agglomeration out of 23 metropolis, urban agglomerations and cities in India. Himachal Pradesh
Himachal Pradesh is a state in northern part of India. Situated in the Western Himalayas, it is bordered by states of Jammu and Kashmir on the north, Punjab on the west, Haryana on the southwest, Uttarakhand on the southeast, and Tibet on the east. At its southernmost point, it also touches the state of Uttar Pradesh. The state's name was coined from the Sanskrit-Him means 'snow' and achal means 'land' or 'abode'-by acharya Diwakar Datt Sharma, one of the state's eminent Sanskrit scholars. Himachal is a mosaic of different cultures. It is inhabited by one of the most colourful people whose culture is as richly diverse and fascinating as the landscape. The developmental activities such as industrialization, road construction, hydropower projects, horticulture, urbanization, mining and growth of tourism have gradually transformed the state, though the issues of environmental pollution, resource depletion and increasing incidences of natural hazards such as cloudbursts, flash floods, land-slides and erratic weather conditions are causing serious concerns. Tamil Nadu
The State of Tamil Nadu has a hoary antiquity. Though early sangam classics throw historical references, we pass to recorded history only from the Pallavas. The southern states of India were under the hegemony of the Cholas, the Cheras and the Pandyas for centuries. The Pallavas held supremacy from about the second quarter of the fourth century A.D. They were the originators of the famous Dravidian style of temple architecture. The last Pallava ruler was Aparajita, in whose reign the later Cholas under Vijayalaya and Aditya asserted themselves by about the 10th century. At the end of the 11th century, Tamil Nadu was ruled by several dynasties like the Chalukyas, Cholas and Pandyas. In the two centuries that followed, the imperial Cholas gained paramountcy over South India. Muslims gradually strengthened their position, which led to the establishment of the Bahamani Sultanate, by the middle of the 14th century. At the same time, the Vijayanagar Kingdom quickly consolidated itself and extended its sway over the whole of South India, and at the close of the century, Vijayanagar became the supreme power in South. However, it crumbled at the battle of Talikota in 1564 to the confederate forces of the Deccan Sultans. The structure of the government of Tamil Nadu, like that of most other states of India, is determined by the national constitution of 1950. The head of state is the governor, who is appointed by the president of India. The book is of great utility to students, teachers, tourists, guides and general readers.
Odisha
Odisha is one of the 29 states of India. Located in eastern India, it is surrounded by the states of West Bengal to the north-east, Jharkhand to the north, Chhattisgarh to the west and north-west, and Andhra Pradesh to the south. Odisha has 485 kilometres (301 mi) of coastline along the Bay of Bengal on its east, from Balasore to Ganjam. It is the 9th largest state by area, and the 11th largest by population. It is also the 3rd most populous state of India in terms of tribal population. Odia (formerly known as Oriya) is the official and most widely spoken language, spoken by 33.2 million according to the 2001 Census. The main parties active in the politics of Odisha are the Biju Janata Dal, the Indian National Congress and Bhartiya Janata Party. Following the Odisha State Assembly Election in 2014, the Naveen Patnaik-led Biju Janata Dal stayed in power for the fourth consecutive term. The Government of Odisha and its 30 districts consists of an executive, led by the Governor of Odisha, a judiciary, and a legislative branch. Like other states in India, the head of state of Odisha is the Governor, appointed by the President of India on the advice of the Central government. His or her post is largely ceremonial. This book will, undoubtedly, deepen our understanding of the economic prosperity and deterioration of Orissa in her past. Telangana
Telangana is a state in the south of India. It is situated on the centre-south stretch of the Indian peninsula on the high Deccan Plateau. It is the twelfth largest state and the twelfth-most populated state in India with a geographical area of 112,077 km (43,273 sq mi) and 35,193,978 residents as per 2011 census. On 2 June 2014, the area was separated from the northwestern part of Andhra Pradesh as the newly formed 29th state with Hyderabad as its historic permanent capital. Its other major cities include Warangal, Nizamabad, Khammam and Karimnagar. Telangana is bordered by the states of Maharashtra to the north, Chhattisgarh to the east, Karnataka to the west and Andhra Pradesh to the east and south. The terrain of Telangana region consists mostly of hills, mountain ranges, and thick dense forests distribution of 27,292 sq. km. As of 2018, the state of Telangana is divided into 31 districts. Government of Telangana is a democratically elected body that governs the State of Telangana, India. The state government is headed by the Governor of Telangana as the nominal head of state, with a democratically elected Chief Minister as the real head of the executive. The governor who is appointed for five years appoints the chief minister and his council of ministers. Telangana is governed by a parliamentary system of representative democracy, a feature the state shares with other Indian states. Universal suffrage is granted to residents. Rajasthan
Rajasthan which is also known as the "Land of Maharajas" is the largest state of India, covering an area of about 342,239 sq. km. Goa is a state in India within the coastal region known as the Konkan, in Western India. Assam
Assam is a state in Northeast India, situated south of the eastern Himalayas along the Brahmaputra and Barak River valleys. Assam covers an area of 78,438 km (30,285 sq mi). The state is bordered by Bhutan and the state of Arunachal Pradesh to the north; Nagaland and Manipur to the east; Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram and Bangladesh to the south; and West Bengal to the west via the Siliguri Corridor, a 22 kilometres (14 mi) strip of land that connects the state to the rest of India. Assam is in many ways a country of exceptional interest. Hemmed in as India is, by the sea on the South-east and South-west, and by the lofty chain of the Himalayas on the North, the only routes between it and the rest of Asia which are practicable for migration on a large scale, lie on its North-West and North-east confines, the so-called Aryans, and many later invaders, such as the Greeks, the Huns, the Pathans, and the Mughals, entered India from the North-west from the North-east, through Assam have come successive hordes of immigrants from the great hive of the Mongolian race in Western China. Assam has Governor Jagdish Mukhi as the head of the state, the unicameral Assam Legislative Assembly of 126 members, and a government led by the Chief Minister of Assam. Kerala

With 33,387,677 inhabitants as per the 2011 Census, Kerala is the thirteenth-largest Indian state by population. It is divided into 14 districts with the capital and largest city being Thiruvananthapuram. Malayalam is the most widely spoken language and is also the official language of the state. The culture of Kerala is a synthesis of Aryan and Dravidian cultures, developed and mixed for centuries, under influences from other parts of India and abroad. It is defined by its antiquity and the organic continuity sustained by the Malayali people. The Government of Kerala was formed on November 1, 1956 after merging of State of Travancore-Cochin with the Malabar district of the Madras state as part of States Reorganisation Act, 1956. Kerala has a unique position in India as one of the most politicised states. It has the nation's largest politically aware population, which actively participates in state politics. Bihar

The five rivers from which the region took its name were Sutlej, Ravi, Beas, Chenab and Jhelum; Sutlej, Ravi and Beas are part of the Indian Punjab. The capital of Punjab is Chandigarh, which also serves as the capital of Haryana and is thus administered separately as a Union Territory of India. The judicial branch of the state government is provided by the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh. This is the third book to be published featuring our adventures with our Southerly 42RST sailing yacht. Previous books have described taking Dofesaba II down the Canals du Midi to the port of Leucate where it was wintered. The second book tells you about our adventures down the East coast of Spain, passing many places where British holiday makers often go for their summer holidays. Then continues in part II towards the final destination of Lagos in Portugal, via Gibraltar. This, the third book completes the circumnavigation of Iberia, and includes details of the encounter with an uncharted rock we had offshore Portugal and what happened after that. If you are a fellow cruising sailor, I hope you take away from this tale that even when things are at their darkest and Death is knocking on the door, there is always light at the end of the tunnel and nearly everything can be fixed, it just takes time and a very good insurance policy. I wrote these books mainly for my own purposes, but book one and two went down very well, and so I had to continue with book three. It was also very cathartic to write about our encounter, it was also very difficult to do so, as I had to stop many times trying to get through the narrative. I hope you will agree that I just about managed it. Sailors who read this will be disappointed that we only sailed for 10% of the time, but that is the harsh reality of going the wrong way round Iberia, particularly trying to head North up the Portuguese coast in the summer, believe me I tried to sail, as it is cheaper. The wind gods did not allow it. Intrigued, I hope so; read on and enjoy.
