111 Places in New Orleans That You Must Not Miss
Originally published in 2018, this is a completely revised edition (with 70+ new entries) of the guide to one of America's unique cities. Where can you hatch a baby alligator in your hand, or zoom over a swamp by zipline? Where can you travel through time in your own T.A.R.D.I.S, cocktail in hand? New Orleans blends the unconventional with the orthodox to create a cultural collision unlike any other city. Known for its jazz, cocktails, Mardi Gras celebrations, and centuries-old mysteries, New Orleans has a history rooted in revelry and mystery. From historic buildings that housed early jazz legends, to museums devoted to the Red-light district, to eateries offering local specialties, 111 Places in New Orleans will introduce you to the distinct vibrancy of the city, and reveal the musical, spiritual, historical, edible, and often sinful, sides of the Crescent City. Experience the depths of dive bars and the heights of haut monde as 111 Places in New Orleans escorts you through a tableau of the Big Easy's best kept secrets. New Orleans may be known as the "City that Care Forgot," but locals and visitors alike will always remember the storied places profiled in these pages - places that embrace the eccentric, celebrate the supernatural, and memorialize the macabre. As noted musician and New Orleans native Allen Toussaint once said, "To get to New Orleans, you don't pass through anywhere else."
111 Places in Baltimore That You Must Not Miss
This revised and updated edition is the ultimate insider's guide to Baltimore, and part of the Emons international 111 Places series. There is possibly no city in the United States as misunderstood as Baltimore, and yet there are few that can match it in majesty. One of the oldest Great Cities of America, Baltimore is profoundly rich in history and culture. But its character is not only derived from its past: Charm City's present and future belong to the thousands of artists and innovators who call it home. Baltimore is full of adventure and surprises. You'll visit the site of one of the most notorious scenes in cinematic history, and the home of the gay divorc矇e who stole the heart of a king. You'll hear music performed by future classical music stars, grab a bite at the last old-fashioned Polish smokehouse on the East Coast, and spend a day on a street art scavenger hunt. Whether it's your first visit or your 20th, and even if you've lived here for a lifetime, you'll embark on a journey of discovery through 111 fascinating spots across Baltimore.

Mount Rogers National Recreation Area Guidebook
Encompassing more than 140,000 acres of scenic beauty in southwestern Virginia, the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area offers outdoor enthusiasts a myriad of activities, from hiking, camping, and fishing to horseback riding, picnicking, swimming, tour driving, and biking. In the only comprehensive guidebook for this region, now newly updated, Johnny Molloy covers all of these activities and more, providing visitors with everything they need, including detailed maps, to enjoy the entire Mount Rogers area--one of the true jewels of Southern Appalachia. Molloy details the more than 430 miles of marked and maintained trails that criss-cross the Mount Rogers NRA and nearby Grayson Highlands State Park. Organized both by type, such as long trails and rail trails, and the areas they cover, including West Side, Central Area, Far East, and High Country, the trail descriptions include comprehensive narratives of each hike, noting the various trail junctions, stream crossings, and trailside features with their distances from the trailhead. With each trail summary is an information box that offers quick access to such pertinent data as trail type (foot, horse, and/or bike), difficulty, length, degree of use, trail connections, and highlights. Complementing the sections on the extensive trail system are chapters on many other recreational options. Anglers will find lists of the best streams and tips for both fly and spin-cast fishing. For those seeking a way to cool off after a mountain excursion, the book locates the area's favorite swimming holes. Molloy also reveals the best roads from which to view the gorgeous scenery and wildlife of the Mount Rogers area. Rounding out the guidebook is information on national forest and state park campgrounds, picnic areas, and accommodations and services in nearby towns, including motels, bed-and-breakfasts, outfitters, and stores. Johnny Molloy is a freelance writer and the author of more than thirty outdoor guidebooks, including, most recently, A Falcon Guide to Mammoth Cave and Beach and Coastal Camping in Florida. His first book, Trial by Trail: Backpacking in the Smoky Mountains, was published by the University of Tennessee Press in 1996.
The Blue Ridge Parkway
Winner of the Thomas Wolfe Memorial Literary Award! For 469 miles the Blue Ridge Parkway follows the crests of ridges and mountains on a ribbon-like course through some of the nation's most spectacular scenery. Each year millions of visitors travel this "pleasure parkway," marveling at its breathtaking vistas and sensing the rich lore of a rugged wilderness that for centuries kept its mountaineer residents isolated. Few visitors recognize, however, the dramatic achievements that the parkway represents. In the beginning intense political infighting, on all levels of government, jeopardized the vision of a new kind of road. But once the future of the parkway was secure, planners and construction engineers were faced with unique guidelines: build for pleasure, not speed; be careful with nature, leave no ugly scars; and retain rustic settings but provide modern conveniences and maximum recreational opportunities. All of this--the attractions and the colorful history--are a part of the total parkway story, told here by historian Harley E. Jolley, a specialist in the interpretation of pioneer history of the parkway area. His account is a sensitive interpretation of the origins, development, and beauty of a road that has been described as the most scenic in America.

Arizona
Of all the states in the union, Arizona is one of the most famous for its truly breathtaking natural beauty. Although the spectacular deserts and the Grand Canyon are best known, over a quarter of the northern part of the state enjoys moderate temperatures and magnificent forests. One of the last territories to become a state, Arizona only joined the union in 1912. Today 85 percent of the state is still publicly owned forest and parkland, state trust land and Indigenous Indian reservations. Arizona has become a growing destination for retirees from the northern states and Canada attracted by the mild winter climate. The 1960s saw the establishment of retirement communities which continue to grow in size and popularity. Arizona is the sixth largest state in the union and is home to over seven million people. Phoenix, the capital, and Tucson have developed large, sprawling suburban areas. The Four Corners Monument (where the states of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah meet) is, despite its remote location, a popular tourist attraction. Grand Canyon National Park is considered one of the world's seven natural wonders and was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979. The Navajo Nation (portions in Arizona, New Mexico and Utah, with the seat of government in Window Rock, Arizona) is the largest Indian reservation in the country, with nearly 400,000 citizens. The boom-and-bust copper mining industry has left hundreds of ghost towns across the state. Tombstone, known for its legendary outlaws and lawmen, is one of the most popular attractions for those nostalgic for the Western cowboy experience. From skiing in the north to the stunning beauty of desert vistas in the south, Arizona's richness and diversity of natural beauty offers something for everyone in this fascinating state.

American Notes for General Circulation
This is a scholarly edition, annotated and illustrated, addressing the modern reader. Dickens fans and students will find the most balanced approach to annotate and contextualize the writer's travel impressions, as well as a chronology following Dickens's itinerary chapter by chapter.American Notes for General Circulation was published shortly after Dickens's return from his six-month trip to North America. While his intention to publish a travel narrative was not publicly disclosed before or during his trip, it was widely assumed that he would write a travel book. After all, many European visitors, especially authors, had written such books in the past. In 1842 Dickens was arguably the most famous novelist in the world, so, naturally, English and American readers eagerly anticipated a book based on his visit. However, Dickens's unexpected critique of the young republic in this little travel narrative caused shockwaves among his devoted readership. The fact that he would risk offending his audience by publishing the book ought to pique modern readers' interest. What did he say that so upset the public? What motivated his choice of content and approach? And what does this neglected text reveal to modern readers about life and literature in the Anglo-American world of the nineteenth century? (From the Introduction by Diana C. Archibald)
