UK Borderscapes
This book analyses bordering practices and their negative effects as well as the many creative and often grassroots ways in which borders are resisted and reinvented. From the hostile environment to Brexit and the Nationality and Borders Bill, the UK border regime has become increasingly strict and complex, operating both at the edge of the state and within everyday life in unprecedented ways. At the same time, this securitisation approach is often contested, and its effects are fought daily by many groups and individuals. This book explores this tension, documenting and analysing how the contemporary UK border is imagined, constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed in multiple ways. To draw together the different pieces that compose this evolving and conflicting landscape, this book uses the concept of "borderscapes", which views borders as sites of multiple tensions between hegemonic, non-hegemonic, and counter-hegemonic imaginaries and practices. This lens enables contributors to draw a multifocal overview of the UK border that includes the different human and material actors that form it, the spaces and practices they shape, and the imaginaries and counter-imaginaries that emerge from their conflictual encounters.Bringing together contributions by researchers from a variety of disciplines, this book will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of migration and border studies, refugee studies, human geography, criminology, sociology, and anthropology.

Fleeting Visits to (some) Scottish Islands and other Places of Interest
Following my Flying Visits to Scotland's Airports and Islands and Grand Tour of (much of) Scotland's Northern Coasts &Central Highlands, the possibly temporary easing of Covid-19 restrictions, after what seemed like an unending lockdown, encouraged me to start again my endeavours to visit those islands and other places of interest in Scotland that I had not previously visited or had given less attention than they deserve. This is not a guidebook! Places of interest visited are selective, not comprehensive. Do not expect recommendations of where to go, how to get there, where to stay and eat, and what to do when you get there. That is the province of D&K, Lonely Planet, Rough Guides etc. As well as an account of my tours, flights and visits, it contains snippets of history, geography, wildlife and, hopefully, amusing or poignant human stories. It also contains snippets of my family history, which drove one of the trips. It is essentially an account of the ramblings, in body and mind, of one individual - me.

Waterlog
'Roger Deakin is the perfect companion for an invigorating armchair swim. Engaging, thoughtful and candid' TelegraphWaterlog celebrates the magic of water and the beauty and eccentricity of Britain. In 1996 Roger Deakin, the late, great nature writer, set out to swim through the British Isles. From the sea, from rock pools, from rivers and streams, tarns, lakes, lochs, ponds, lidos, swimming pools and spas, from fens, dykes, moats, aqueducts, waterfalls, flooded quarries, even canals, Deakin gains a fascinating perspective on modern Britain. Detained by water bailiffs in Winchester, intercepted in the Fowey estuary by coastguards, mistaken for a suicide on Camber sands, confronting the Corryvreckan whirlpool in the Hebrides, he discovers just how much of an outsider the native swimmer is to his landlocked, fully-dressed fellow citizens. This is a personal journey, a bold assertion of the native swimmer's right to roam, and an unforgettable celebration of the magic of water.
High Tea and the Low Down
When American Claire Craig Evans married a charming British man, there was a cost for the snappy banter and countless offers of tea: she had to uproot life as she knew it and relocate to the UK.Who wouldn't want to move to an enchanted island where mysterious women with dewy complexions made jam in thatched cottages with millennia-old lichen attached?Sure, experienced American expats offered nuggets of wisdom ("Bring over a lifetime supply of taco seasoning!") but they weren't even mild comfort as Claire tried to avoid death, jail, and wayward sheep while learning to navigate zebra crossings and drive on the "wrong" side of the road. The allure of a jet-setter lifestyle vanished as fast as Air India sent her Samsonite to Delhi instead of London Heathrow. Would more tea help her figure out how long she'd been wearing the single pair of underwear in her possession? (That was the jetlag talking. They do have underwear in the UK, too.)Appealing to fans of Bill Bryson and Bridget Jones alike, High Tea and the Low Down is a keenly-observed memoir full of laugh-out-loud moments as Claire experiences the reality of English living. If she couldn't even pass a pub quiz, how would she ever pass the infamous Life in the UK test, the high-stakes hurdle required to stay on British soil (and with her husband) indefinitely?
Buckinghamshire
Although it is one of the smaller counties, Buckinghamshire has a potent identity, with the Chiltern Hills, steep roads going down through beechwoods and the blue distances of Aylesbury Vale. It is historic, with plenty of Oliver Cromwell and Royalist connections. Its pubs are old and beamed and are welcoming. Its villages are beautiful but not sugary, with their perfect churches and vernacular buildings made with flint and red brick, often thatched, to stone villages at the north close to Northamptonshire, and west on the borders of Oxfordshire. There are some thriving small and large county towns: Aylesbury, High Wycombe and Milton Keynes. New build is everywhere, tucked in at the back of villages, with closes and drives and courts wherever there 穩s space to build them. In the main, it is not a poor county, and I'd say it is an enjoyable one. It is also conveniently close to London. The Grand Union Canal cuts right down from north to south and you might think, being middle England with no coastline, there would be no sailing, but amazingly there are several sailing clubs, not just at the Thames at the south, but at lakes and rivers at the north near Milton Keynes. In fact, in such areas it might be wise to check the flood history if you're thinking of moving there. Grand Tour of (much of) Scotland’s Northern Coasts & Central Highlands
The arrival of Covid-19 at the turn of 2019-20 put paid to any travel until July 2020. My planned cruise out to St Kilda and some of the Hebridean islands with Noble Caledonia was cancelled as the lockdown began and although, for a while, it looked as if my replacement cruise with Majestic Line in late July might just go ahead, it too was cancelled. By that time, I had made some hotel bookings and a provisional arrangement to fly from Plockton to Skye and so I decided to travel right up the west coast, visiting places I had meant to visit but never before managed. It turned into a tour around (most of) the northern coasts of Scotland and a run back down through the Central highlands.
