Ze Germans
As a British national living in Germany, Fadi did not find it easy to adapt to the German way of life at first. He constantly bemoaned their lack of a sense of humour, the overly-direct approach; the lack of tact, the non-existence of customer-service, the staggering bureaucracy and many other aspects of everyday life one faces in the Bundesrepublik. However, where many of us expats would have packed our stuff and left, Fadi decided to examine things that were bothering him, and find out why. Tired of banging his head against a wall he quietly decided to write a book. "It was an epiphany. All of a sudden if I was frustrated with something, instead of venting it at other people, I wrote it down on a piece of paper - it was like meditating". It turned out that Fadi was very frustrated indeed - 300 pages of it. His style pays homage to Bill Bryson; written with a light anecdotal tone, often mixed in with a dollop of self-mockery, giving a vivid account of German society as a whole. The Difference: At a glance, this book seems like any other satirical guide to Germany, of which there are aplenty. However, after reading a portion of it we discover that the author goes much deeper into the 'source of the problem', linking different points to socio-economical, cultural, and other aspects of German life, thus helping the reader to really understand the mentality in this country. " I had been planning for a long time to write a story, or a series of blogs about my experience in Germany, but never got round to it. One fine day I realised that it's now or never. I had come to a conclusion that I myself was mutating into a German, and if I'd wait any longer, I would not be able to write this book at all".
Diary of a Pilgrimage
Step into a world of witty travel and quiet reflection, where a midlife wanderer turns a voyage into a lucid meditation on life, faith, and the road ahead. Diary Of A Pilgrimage is a humorous travelogue and episodic memoir that blends light-hearted observation with a spiritual journey narrative, charting a thoughtful path through Victorian England and the landscapes beyond. Jerome K. Jerome's Victorian era travel diary is more than travel writing; it's a study in timing, humour, and humanity. The voice remains approachable and clear, yet richly textured with historical flavour, offering readers of travel writing a window into a British travelogue era that feels both intimate and expansive. This complete travel diary collection invites fans of british humour and classicBritish letters to reconnect with a beloved voice and a world where every mile earned a pause for insight. This edition is not merely a reprint but a restoration for today's and future generations. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions, it is presented as a collector's item and a cultural treasure-carefully refreshed so it endures as a cornerstone for casual readers and classic-literature collectors alike. For those seeking a humorous travelogue rooted in a vivid Victorian England setting, this is a book to savour, from breezy observations to deeper reflections that linger long after the journey ends.

The Passenger: Berlin
Fully-illustrated, The Passenger collects the best new writing, photography, art and reportage from around the world. IN THIS VOLUME: When the Circus Came to Town: The Resurrection of Potsdamer Platz by Peter Schneider・Berlin Suite by Cees Nooteboom・Tempelhof: A Field of Dreams by Vincenzo Latronico・plus: the controversial reconstruction of a Prussian castle, Berlin's most transgressive sex club and its disappearing traditional pubs, a green urban oasis, suburban neo-Nazis, North Vietnamese in the East, South Vietnamese in the West, techno everywhere and much more... "Berlin is too big for Berlin" is the curious title of a book by the flaneur Hanns Zischler, who joked about the low population density of a city so spread-out and polycentric--one of the reasons why it still inspires feelings of freedom and space. But the phrase also carries a symbolic, broader meaning: how can a single city encompass and sustain such a weighty mythology as that of contemporary Berlin, "the capital of cool"? In order to find out, it is necessary to travel to the 1990s, the origins of today's Berlin, when time seemed to have stopped. The scars of a century of war were still visible everywhere: coal stoves, crumbling buildings, desolate minimarts, not a working buzzer or elevator. To visit the city then was a hallucinatory experience, a simultaneous journey into the past and into the future. The city's youth seemed to have appropriated--and turned into a positive--the famous phrase pronounced by Karl Scheffler at the beginning of the 20th century: "Berlin is a place doomed to always become, never be." The abandoned ruins, the hidden gems found at the flea market, the illegal basement raves are a thing of the past. The era of Berlin as a site of urban archeology is over. Almost all the damaged buildings have been repaired, squatters have been removed, the shops selling East German furniture have closed down. Without its wounds, the landscape of the city is perhaps less striking but more solid, stronger. Even the city's inhabitants have lost some of their melancholia, their romantic and self-destructive streak: today you can even find people who come to Berlin to actually work, not just to "create" or idle their days away. Yet, Berlin remains a youthful city that doesn't cling to its "poor but sexy" past, whose only sacrosanct principles are an uncompromising multiculturalism and the belief that its future is yet to be written. To quote someone who knows the city well, Berlin is and always will be "pure potential."
Hitler
Wyndham Lewis (1882-1957) was a British novelist, painter, essayist, and polemicist. Credited with being the founder of the only modernist movement from Britain, Vorcticism, Lewis approached politics as an aesthetic discipline. His 1931 work Hitler was written after his visit to Germany that year, and highlights the charged atmosphere and uneasy tension that permeated Berlin. Bringing his wit and humor to analyze a country on the eve of revolution, Lewis argues that in contemporary 'emergency conditions' Hitler may truly be the best option for Germans. Branded a National Socialist sympathizer - Wyndham Lewis's reputation never recovered from the release of this book. Even later disavowals in The Hitler Cult and The Jews, Are They Human? (both in 1939) failed to restore his image. Throughout the 1930's Wyndham Lewis persisted in his advocacy of what is now termed "appeasement". During the war, he fled to the United States and Canada, all the while working to distance himself from his 1931 writings. His later work began explicitly praising a radical individualism which had been ever-present, but never before at the forefront. He returned home to England after the war, and went blind in 1951, but kept writing critiques and fiction of such quality that he had a brief renaissance of popularity before his death in 1957. Despite this, the shadow of Hitler continues to haunt the legacy of Wyndham Lewis. Antelope Hill is proud to release Wyndham Lewis's Hitler, in print for the first time since 1972, with an original foreword by John "Borzoi" Chapman, so that the reader can judge for himself the character of this unique artist.

National Geographic Traveler
Germany's premier city, Berlin, is one of the fastest growing and intriguing in Europe. This guidebook, written by experienced travel writer Damien Simonis, expertly guides you through the varied land- and cityscapes that are today's Berlin. Illustrated with more than 120 vivid, up-to-date photographs and nearly 20 detailed, full-color maps, this second edition gives you every tool you need to plan a trip to the center of the new Europe, from the historic and massive Reichstag building in the town center to the complex of museums and gardens at the former royal palace in the west at Charlottenburg. Starting with a detailed introduction to Berlin's unique history, food, land, and culture--factors that have clearly shaped the distinctive volksgeist of the German people--the book then explores each of the neighborhoods that make up the city. Among the sights: the city's grand pastoral thoroughfare in the center of town, Unter Den Linden; the Forum of Culture, home of Berlin's concert hall and several excellent museums; the Tiergarden, the large central park that constitutes some of metropolis's extensive green space; the quiet woods, rivers, and lakelands of Berlin's far west; and the many world-class museums clustered on Museum Island in the east. In addition, an "Excursions" chapter steers you to the best day trips out of the city. Special features give comprehensive information on many diverse topics such as the story of the Berlin Wall; the city's Jewish community; and a look at Berlin's famous Christmas markets. The book also presents mapped, guided walks and tours through some of the city's most fascinating areas, including a walk through Red Berlin and a drive through the Mecklenburg lake district. Experiential sidebars--such as reliving the feel of pre-war Berlin at a silent-movie theater or visiting the city's famed museums when they're open all night--show you details on how to immerse yourself in Berlin's culture. In addition, a thorough Travelwise section provides recommendations for hotels and restaurants in all price ranges and in all areas. Whether you're visiting Kurf羹rstendamm, Berlin's main shopping street, revisiting history in front of the Brandenburg Gate, or strolling Frederick the Great's sumptuous palaces and gardens at Potsdam, National Geographic Traveler: Berlin has everything you need to make your trip a memorable one. The National Geographic Traveler series is aimed at active travelers who want authentic, enriching, cultural experiences and look to a guidebook for expert advice and insider tips from a trustworthy source.
