It’s Warm in Siberia - Travel Stories and Photographs from a Solo Journey Across the USSR in 1984
In 1984, Jon Humboldt Gates, having spent two years studying Russian and planning his journey, left his rural home on the California north coast and landed on the shores of the Soviet Far East by ship via Japan. He spent the next eight weeks traveling by rail and automobile through Russia and Ukraine, riding the full length of the Trans-Siberian Railway, driving alone for hundreds of kilometers through Russia and traveling south to the Black Sea. Along the way, he met scores of people from all walks of life, most of whom had never met an American; an old woman with six white geese on a country road who pleaded with him for peace, a 14-year-old boy from Siberia who shared his love for dogs, a man who invited him to plunge into the icy waters of Lake Baikal, a group of musicians in Kyiv (Kiev in 1984) who became the seed of a transnational music project, and an ice cream flavor Baskin-Robbins had never imagined. He formed deep friendships, some that were lasting, others that were celebrated in the moment.First published in 1988, this second edition is being re-released in the midst of a great tragedy across the frontier of Russia and Ukraine. These events could never have been imagined in 1984. Many of the people in this travelogue are from Ukraine and Russia, and a few from other Soviet republics. No matter where they were from, people across the USSR in the waning days of the nation were universally hopeful for a better world, a peaceful future, and they enthusiastically welcomed a foreign traveler in their midst.

Only in Zurich
Proving there is more to Zurich than banking, clean streets and punctuality, this explorer's guidebook shows a very different side to the Swiss city. Roman ruins and medieval walls, curious museums and secret gardens, idiosyncratic shops and converted factories. From Roman Turicum and the Old Swiss Confederacy to the Helvetic Republic and the Industrial Revolution. Locations include the home of FIFA, an elephant in the woods, the emperor's paddle steamer, and the original 'Dark Restaurant'. Also coffee with Lenin, the forgotten Mrs. Einstein, in the footsteps of James Joyce, and a martyr to the Reformation. The ideal city guide for travellers who want to escape the crowds and go beyond the well-known paths, as well as for those inhabitants who perhaps thought they already knew their city. Published by The Urban Explorer, these city tales from new and unusual perspectives are aimed at independent cultural travellers.

If Cars Could Walk
In the last twenty-five years, the explosive rise of car mobility has transformed street life in postsocialist cities. Whereas previously the social fabric of these cities ran on socialist modes of mobility, they are now overtaken by a culture of privately owned cars. If Cars Could Walk uses ethnographic cases studies documenting these changes in terms of street interaction, vehicles used, and the parameters of speed, maneuverability, and cultural and symbolic values. The altered reality of people's movements, replacing public transport, bicycles and other former 'socialist' modes of mobility with privatized mobility reflect an evolving political and cultural imagination, which in turn shapes their current political reality.
Pilgrimage to Crete
At the outset of the Second World War on September 1, 1939, young Aussie diggers are rushed to assist Britain in its hour of need to the nearest European war zone in the Middle East and North Africa. My Uncle Arthur, young Arty is one of these a sapper with 6 years militia training as an army engineer. The ANZAC forces sweep through Libya, from Egypt to Benghazi, defeating superior numbers of heavily armed Italians the first Allied land victory of the war.Ill-equipped and lacking promised supplies, the ANZACs are then inappropriately redirected from North Africa to Greece to help the Greeks face the overwhelming German advance. Retreating to Crete, Arty is captured in the Battle of Crete and becomes a POW. I am motivated to visit the conflict zones of Gallipoli and to follow my uncles wartime exploits from the time of his capture in June 1941 until his third and final escape from a German work camp in Czechoslovakia in 1945.Modern day travel makes it possible to visit not only the more recent wartime scenes of Central Europe, but also to visit the sites of classical civilizations to discover the history, art and cultures of the Mediterranean. Accompanying me on my journey is Avril who was born in England and has vivid wartime memories of the conflict from her childhood.

Faroe Islands
This new, thoroughly updated sixth edition of Bradt's Faroe Islands remains the only English-language guide to this isolated, unspoiled Nordic archipelago, home to T籀rshavn (the world's smallest capital), and where there are twice as many sheep as people - meaning that it's still possible to discover a way of life that is fast disappearing elsewhere in Europe, a place where sheep were fitted with cameras to help film for Google Streetview (locally dubbed Google 'Sheepview'). Visiting the Faroes is a chance to experience nature in the raw. Its breathtaking landscapes never fail to inspire, from the highest sea cliffs in Europe at Enniberg on the island of Vi簸oy to the dramatic seascapes at Akraberg, the southernmost point of the Faroes. Also included are details of how to reach even the remotest corners by bus using a travel card, information on changing seabird numbers in the North Atlantic, and details of where to go birdwatching and hiking. Written by expert author James Proctor, who has been visiting the Faroes since 1992, this guidebook offers detailed information about all 18 islands (including Mykines, whose year-round population is barely in double figures). Within the islands themselves, Bradt's Faroe Islands is recognised as the definitive source of information about the Faroes in the English language - and is widely respected as such. There's hands-on advice about where to stay and eat, how to get around - be it by local ferry, helicopter or your own hire car - and what to see and do. This latest edition includes all the most recent developments (including improvements in air, ferry and road travel - the latter including the world's only subsea roundabout) and provides all the information needed for a successful trip, with updated reviews of accommodation (plus T籀rshavn's classy new hotels) and eating and drinking options. Whether you're visiting for the amazing birdlife, to walk some of Europe's least-known hiking trails or simply to sample real village life among the turf-roofed houses painted in a m礙l矇e of reds, yellows and blues, Bradt's Faroe Islands is the perfect companion.

Where the f**k is Bl繹ndu籀s?
Where the f**k is Bl繹ndu籀s? is both a triumph of travel writing and a masterpiece of memoir. It deserves a space on every bookcase and in every suitcase. Richard Moriarty - The Sun. Having survived a terrifying burglary, Emma had reached a point in life where she feared being awake and dreaded falling asleep. She grabbed her late mother's notebooks, packed her car with warm clothes, a swimsuit that had seen better days, a set of winter tyres and a brand new tent, and caught a ferry to Iceland. Surtsey was an unexpected eruption - just as my own birth was unplanned and something of an interruption. So captivated by the magic of Iceland, our mother returned home with a bar of Toblerone for each of us. There were no hugs or questions as to our welfare. My sisters and I had been alone for three weeks. I was almost 5 years old. Inspired by a six-month journey to Iceland in wintertime, "Where the f**k is Bl繹ndu籀s?" is moving, honest, and entertaining. Why would a middle-aged woman choose to spend a winter alone in the far north of Iceland? It's a fair question, though the answer isn't quite so straightforward. I dreamed of lying on a blanket gazing up into the night sky, holding my breath in anticipation of the colourful aurora that may soon dance overhead, without being asked, "Will you be long?" By battling the elements, conquering her fears, and learning to knit, all under the watchful gaze of the small community, Emma made sense of the past, found peace with the present, and felt strong enough to deal with the future. Authentic, gripping, and as vivid as a cold winter's night, this inspirational Icelandic adventure will take you on an unforgettable journey of discovery and healing. Chris Riches - Daily Express

Pilgrim Paths to Assisi
MANY PEOPLE ARE FAMILIAR WITH the Camino de Santiago, the historic pilgrimage in Spain. Fewer have heard of the Way of St. Francis. At around 300 miles (500 kilometers) this pilgrimage route connects legendary places in the life of history's best loved saint, Francis of Assisi. Starting in Florence and ending in Rome, this route winds through the Apennine Mountains as it traces thousands of years of history in a magical and beautiful land. At its center point is the jewel of the entire pathway-Assisi. Author and pilgrim Russ Eanes, along with his wife Jane, tackled this challenging and deeply meaningful trail after walking 500 miles to Santiago, a pilgrimage that he had waited decades to make. A lifelong admirer and student of Saint Francis, Eanes was drawn to learn what he could by walking through the hills, valleys and towns of Tuscany and Umbria, Francis' enchanting homeland.Always walking with Assisi as their goal, they discovered lonely mountain passes, cliff-top hermitages, remote villages and monasteries, ancient forests, charming locals, delicious food, and some of the world's most spectacular scenery. They come away with a deeper appreciation for the rugged and mystical landscape that shaped the world's most admired saint.

Haute Bohemians: Greece
A glorious, intimate homage to the magical country of Greece, from bestselling photographer and writer Miguel Flores-Vianna. A land immortalized by poets for its otherworldly beauty, Greece is the birthplace of iconic monuments that are known the world over. Yet, at the same time, it is also home to an organic architectural language, the product of centuries of rural and island lifestyles--the heir both to the timelessness of classical architecture and the simplicity of rustic living. This stunning volume chronicles Miguel Flores-Vianna's photographic odyssey through the beautiful Greek landscape, showcasing historical houses alongside contemporary homes, united by the colorful characters who either live or have lived in these places--the "haute bohemians." From the sophisticated residences of collectors and painters to island hideaways, centuries-old tavernas, royal follies, breathtaking gardens, and even a restored sailboat, Haute Bohemians: Greece transports Flores-Vianna's armchair travel companions to a wondrous world, bathed in the glow of an ethereal light. The homes of an extraordinary range of individuals are featured, from artists and interior designers to royalty and philanthropists. Among them: Jasper Conran and Oisin ByrneHelen and Brice MardenEleni MartinouJacob Rothschild Christina Seilern and Dimitri Goulandris John StefanidisKaterina Tsigarida A self-confessed "Hellenophile" who has visited Greece countless times since his childhood, Flores-Vianna invites us to join him in paying tribute to his beloved adopted nation, capturing the character and patina of this enchanting country through his trademark intimate, atmospheric photography and engaging texts.
