A Survivor’s Guide to Living in Ireland 2021
In this 2021 edition of A Survivor's Guide to Living in Ireland, American expatriate Tom Richards reflects on his 39 years of living in Ireland, and offers additional advice on how you can, too. Since first published in 2005, Richards has updated this book of essential reading almost annually to reflect the ever-changing tapestry of Ireland. In this edition, he explores how the current pandemic, as well as Brexit, has affected Ireland and its citizens, while noting the growing light of optimism as vaccines roll out here and across the world. For those dreaming of living and working in Ireland, he provides a practical guide to immigration as well as pinpointing skillsets in demand that could be the brass ring to gaining a work permit and employment in this country. In the 2021, and final, edition of A Survivor's Guide to Living in Ireland, Richards shows how he has survived and prospered in a country much different to the culture of his birth. In doing so, he answers a number of practical questions many pose as they consider embarking on a similar journey: Am I entitled to an Irish Work Visa? If so, how can I get one? Is Ireland really the land of my dreams? If I've thought of staying for a prolonged visit, establishing residency, or creating an Irish business, how do I do it? What would it really be like to live in Ireland, anyway?Find out in this rich volume of over 90,000 words devoted to the ever-changing tapestry of living and working in Ireland. This fun, easy to read book contains (among other things) a brief history of Ireland, the opportunities present here for would-be immigrants, and tips on how to get a work permit, become a citizen, buy a home, cope with taxation and the cost of living, and enjoy this amazing country for yourself. As an added bonus, a Dictionary of Irish Slang and Phrases coaches you to talk like the Irish do. In 1982, American Tom Richards, fresh out of UCLA, took a four-week holiday to Ireland. He's been here ever since. Witty and insightful, Richards tells how he overcame the culture shock of living in the Auld Sod, learning to twist his middle-class American thinking into a more European point of view while managing to pay his bills at the same time. Along the way, he's learned some practical lessons that he now shares: From how to understand the Irish to how to drink a perfect pint; from finding a job to how to get a work permit; from purchasing your first dream home to learning to take soaking walks on a soft Irish day. In short, he reveals that to survive in Ireland, all you have to do is discover the magic of this wonderful country for yourself. A Survivor's Guide to Living in Ireland has sold over 25,000 copies. In this edition, you can learn to Talk like the Irish, Drink like the Irish, Work like the Irish, and Live like the Irish. Essential reading for anyone considering a visit or move to this fabulous country.

Holy Land Encounter
Ever since the Lord called Dr. Albert Nucciarone (Pastor Al) and his wife Billie to Israel, it has felt more like home to them. Not only has he learned to love the country, but also the people. Both Jews and Arabs have become his friends. This book is a summary of 15 years of personal interaction with the Land and the people. Looking at the Holy Land, it can be viewed from three perspectives: 1. Knowing its history - the facts and the truth we can glean from the facts. 2. Learning how to worship the Lord.Studying the people, places and events should lead us to real devotion. 3. Proclaiming good preaching points. While prophecy has to do with future events, it can also be used in the sense of preaching. Those who preach the prophetic Word of God should do so like the Old Testament prophets with truth, conviction, brokenness, and boldness. Holy Land Encounter is meant as a guide for pastors, teachers and those with a heart and passion for God. It is a helpful tool for those who want to learn more about what the Bible teaches about Israel in all its facets.
It’s Warm in Siberia - Travel Stories and Photographs from a Solo Journey Across the USSR in 1984
In 1984, Jon Humboldt Gates, having spent two years studying Russian and planning his journey, left his rural home on the California north coast and landed on the shores of the Soviet Far East by ship via Japan. He spent the next eight weeks traveling by rail and automobile through Russia and Ukraine, riding the full length of the Trans-Siberian Railway, driving alone for hundreds of kilometers through Russia and traveling south to the Black Sea. Along the way, he met scores of people from all walks of life, most of whom had never met an American; an old woman with six white geese on a country road who pleaded with him for peace, a 14-year-old boy from Siberia who shared his love for dogs, a man who invited him to plunge into the icy waters of Lake Baikal, a group of musicians in Kyiv (Kiev in 1984) who became the seed of a transnational music project, and an ice cream flavor Baskin-Robbins had never imagined. He formed deep friendships, some that were lasting, others that were celebrated in the moment.First published in 1988, this second edition is being re-released in the midst of a great tragedy across the frontier of Russia and Ukraine. These events could never have been imagined in 1984. Many of the people in this travelogue are from Ukraine and Russia, and a few from other Soviet republics. No matter where they were from, people across the USSR in the waning days of the nation were universally hopeful for a better world, a peaceful future, and they enthusiastically welcomed a foreign traveler in their midst.

In 1828, Unitarian minister Israel Worsley sought to answer this question in the affirmative by publishing the book: "A View of the American Indians...Shewing Them to be the Descendants of the Ten Tribes of Israel." The purpose of Worsley's 1828 book was to give a concise but conspicuous view of the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel, extracting from the works of Ethan Smith, Elias Boudinot, and other sources including incidental remarks of historians, Josephus, Prideaux, Gibbon, Robertson and others, such materials as bear directly upon the point in question. Among the proofs cited by Worsley in support of Native Americans being descendants of the lost tribes of Israel are the following: - The American Indians live in tribes; They have a tradition prevailing universally, that they came into that country at the Northwest corner; - They acknowledge One God, the Great Spirit, who created all things seen and unseen-the name by which this being is known to them is ale, the old Hebrew name of God; he is also called yehovah, sometimes yah, and also abba; - They are distinctly heard to sing with their religious dances, halleluyah or praise to yah; - They keep annual feasts which resemble those of the Mosaic ritual; - There is a sort of jubilee kept by some of them; - They have cities of refuge; - In their temples is a holy place into which none may enter but the priest; - The priests garb is a humble imitation of the High Priest's robes, with a breast plate and other ornaments; - They have a succession of priests, who are inducted into office by purification and anointing; - They had once a holy book, which while they kept, things went well with them; they lost it, and in consequence of the loss fell under the displeasure of the Great Spirit; but they believe they shall one day regain it.

If Cars Could Walk
In the last twenty-five years, the explosive rise of car mobility has transformed street life in postsocialist cities. Whereas previously the social fabric of these cities ran on socialist modes of mobility, they are now overtaken by a culture of privately owned cars. If Cars Could Walk uses ethnographic cases studies documenting these changes in terms of street interaction, vehicles used, and the parameters of speed, maneuverability, and cultural and symbolic values. The altered reality of people's movements, replacing public transport, bicycles and other former 'socialist' modes of mobility with privatized mobility reflect an evolving political and cultural imagination, which in turn shapes their current political reality.
Pilgrimage to Crete
At the outset of the Second World War on September 1, 1939, young Aussie diggers are rushed to assist Britain in its hour of need to the nearest European war zone in the Middle East and North Africa. My Uncle Arthur, young Arty is one of these a sapper with 6 years militia training as an army engineer. The ANZAC forces sweep through Libya, from Egypt to Benghazi, defeating superior numbers of heavily armed Italians the first Allied land victory of the war.Ill-equipped and lacking promised supplies, the ANZACs are then inappropriately redirected from North Africa to Greece to help the Greeks face the overwhelming German advance. Retreating to Crete, Arty is captured in the Battle of Crete and becomes a POW. I am motivated to visit the conflict zones of Gallipoli and to follow my uncles wartime exploits from the time of his capture in June 1941 until his third and final escape from a German work camp in Czechoslovakia in 1945.Modern day travel makes it possible to visit not only the more recent wartime scenes of Central Europe, but also to visit the sites of classical civilizations to discover the history, art and cultures of the Mediterranean. Accompanying me on my journey is Avril who was born in England and has vivid wartime memories of the conflict from her childhood.

Where the f**k is Bl繹ndu籀s?
Where the f**k is Bl繹ndu籀s? is both a triumph of travel writing and a masterpiece of memoir. It deserves a space on every bookcase and in every suitcase. Richard Moriarty - The Sun. Having survived a terrifying burglary, Emma had reached a point in life where she feared being awake and dreaded falling asleep. She grabbed her late mother's notebooks, packed her car with warm clothes, a swimsuit that had seen better days, a set of winter tyres and a brand new tent, and caught a ferry to Iceland. Surtsey was an unexpected eruption - just as my own birth was unplanned and something of an interruption. So captivated by the magic of Iceland, our mother returned home with a bar of Toblerone for each of us. There were no hugs or questions as to our welfare. My sisters and I had been alone for three weeks. I was almost 5 years old. Inspired by a six-month journey to Iceland in wintertime, "Where the f**k is Bl繹ndu籀s?" is moving, honest, and entertaining. Why would a middle-aged woman choose to spend a winter alone in the far north of Iceland? It's a fair question, though the answer isn't quite so straightforward. I dreamed of lying on a blanket gazing up into the night sky, holding my breath in anticipation of the colourful aurora that may soon dance overhead, without being asked, "Will you be long?" By battling the elements, conquering her fears, and learning to knit, all under the watchful gaze of the small community, Emma made sense of the past, found peace with the present, and felt strong enough to deal with the future. Authentic, gripping, and as vivid as a cold winter's night, this inspirational Icelandic adventure will take you on an unforgettable journey of discovery and healing. Chris Riches - Daily Express

Weaned on the teachings of ancient Greek philosophers, thrilled by the bravery of Spartans and thousands of years of cultural heritage.Peter, her future husband, a tea-drinking, digestive-dunking product of British society. Working to make a living with no real ambitions or dreams. But then, he fell in love. Everything changed. At times hilarious, always embarrassing, Peter's story of how he became Greek enough to live with a Greek family includes a near-death experience on a mountain road, eccentric aunts, Greek bureaucracy, melting flip-flops, and the decision to demolish the much-loved family home, replacing it with a five-storey apartment block, complete with a Parthenon on the roof terrace. To cap it all, someone thought it a good idea to put Peter in charge of the rebuild project, despite not speaking a word of Greek. What could possibly go wrong?
