A View of the American Indians
"Are the Ten Tribes of Israel lost or missing?... Jews may have found their way to America." - The Eclectic Review (1829) "Israel Worsley worked over the material gathered by Boudinot and Smith, and added something." -Narrative and Critical History of America (1889) "Established some very curious coincidences between the Beni-Israel, and some of the American tribes." -The Congregational Magazine, 1828 Are the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel to be found in Native American tribes of North and South America? In 1828, Unitarian minister Israel Worsley sought to answer this question in the affirmative by publishing the book: "A View of the American Indians...Shewing Them to be the Descendants of the Ten Tribes of Israel." The purpose of Worsley's 1828 book was to give a concise but conspicuous view of the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel, extracting from the works of Ethan Smith, Elias Boudinot, and other sources including incidental remarks of historians, Josephus, Prideaux, Gibbon, Robertson and others, such materials as bear directly upon the point in question. Among the proofs cited by Worsley in support of Native Americans being descendants of the lost tribes of Israel are the following: - The American Indians live in tribes; They have a tradition prevailing universally, that they came into that country at the Northwest corner; - They acknowledge One God, the Great Spirit, who created all things seen and unseen-the name by which this being is known to them is ale, the old Hebrew name of God; he is also called yehovah, sometimes yah, and also abba; - They are distinctly heard to sing with their religious dances, halleluyah or praise to yah; - They keep annual feasts which resemble those of the Mosaic ritual; - There is a sort of jubilee kept by some of them; - They have cities of refuge; - In their temples is a holy place into which none may enter but the priest; - The priests garb is a humble imitation of the High Priest's robes, with a breast plate and other ornaments; - They have a succession of priests, who are inducted into office by purification and anointing; - They had once a holy book, which while they kept, things went well with them; they lost it, and in consequence of the loss fell under the displeasure of the Great Spirit; but they believe they shall one day regain it.

If Cars Could Walk
In the last twenty-five years, the explosive rise of car mobility has transformed street life in postsocialist cities. Whereas previously the social fabric of these cities ran on socialist modes of mobility, they are now overtaken by a culture of privately owned cars. If Cars Could Walk uses ethnographic cases studies documenting these changes in terms of street interaction, vehicles used, and the parameters of speed, maneuverability, and cultural and symbolic values. The altered reality of people's movements, replacing public transport, bicycles and other former 'socialist' modes of mobility with privatized mobility reflect an evolving political and cultural imagination, which in turn shapes their current political reality.

Faroe Islands
This new, thoroughly updated sixth edition of Bradt's Faroe Islands remains the only English-language guide to this isolated, unspoiled Nordic archipelago, home to T籀rshavn (the world's smallest capital), and where there are twice as many sheep as people - meaning that it's still possible to discover a way of life that is fast disappearing elsewhere in Europe, a place where sheep were fitted with cameras to help film for Google Streetview (locally dubbed Google 'Sheepview'). Visiting the Faroes is a chance to experience nature in the raw. Its breathtaking landscapes never fail to inspire, from the highest sea cliffs in Europe at Enniberg on the island of Vi簸oy to the dramatic seascapes at Akraberg, the southernmost point of the Faroes. Also included are details of how to reach even the remotest corners by bus using a travel card, information on changing seabird numbers in the North Atlantic, and details of where to go birdwatching and hiking. Written by expert author James Proctor, who has been visiting the Faroes since 1992, this guidebook offers detailed information about all 18 islands (including Mykines, whose year-round population is barely in double figures). Within the islands themselves, Bradt's Faroe Islands is recognised as the definitive source of information about the Faroes in the English language - and is widely respected as such. There's hands-on advice about where to stay and eat, how to get around - be it by local ferry, helicopter or your own hire car - and what to see and do. This latest edition includes all the most recent developments (including improvements in air, ferry and road travel - the latter including the world's only subsea roundabout) and provides all the information needed for a successful trip, with updated reviews of accommodation (plus T籀rshavn's classy new hotels) and eating and drinking options. Whether you're visiting for the amazing birdlife, to walk some of Europe's least-known hiking trails or simply to sample real village life among the turf-roofed houses painted in a m礙l矇e of reds, yellows and blues, Bradt's Faroe Islands is the perfect companion.

Pilgrim Paths to Assisi
MANY PEOPLE ARE FAMILIAR WITH the Camino de Santiago, the historic pilgrimage in Spain. Fewer have heard of the Way of St. Francis. At around 300 miles (500 kilometers) this pilgrimage route connects legendary places in the life of history's best loved saint, Francis of Assisi. Starting in Florence and ending in Rome, this route winds through the Apennine Mountains as it traces thousands of years of history in a magical and beautiful land. At its center point is the jewel of the entire pathway-Assisi. Author and pilgrim Russ Eanes, along with his wife Jane, tackled this challenging and deeply meaningful trail after walking 500 miles to Santiago, a pilgrimage that he had waited decades to make. A lifelong admirer and student of Saint Francis, Eanes was drawn to learn what he could by walking through the hills, valleys and towns of Tuscany and Umbria, Francis' enchanting homeland.Always walking with Assisi as their goal, they discovered lonely mountain passes, cliff-top hermitages, remote villages and monasteries, ancient forests, charming locals, delicious food, and some of the world's most spectacular scenery. They come away with a deeper appreciation for the rugged and mystical landscape that shaped the world's most admired saint.

Basle and France in the Sixteenth Century
Basle, in the time of Erasmus, had a reputation for tolerance and liberalism rare in the sixteenth century. This book captures the intellectual climate of the city in Erasmus' time and after his death. It shows the gradual spread and modification among the French-speaking public of humanist attitudes and ideals associated with the Erasmian Basle. Based on extensive bibliographical research and perusal of much correspondence, published and unpublished, of the early humanists, the study investigates the contracts between the city of Basle and the French-speaking regions of sixteenth-century Europe. It is not primarily a political history, for the political influence of the town was insignificant, not is it a history of ideas in the usual sense. Rather than analysing the contexts of the books produced in Basle, Professor Bietenholz studies the people who produced them and distributed them in France. He examines their reading habits and motives for writing and printing, and their personal contacts. The volume includes biographical information about Francophones in Basle: students, professors, political agents, merchants, doctors, ministers, and printers. Many were religious exiles and participated in the various theological controversies of the Reformation. In addition, the book includes a bibliography of over 1200 books and dissertations published at Basle by Francophone authors, editors, and translators.

Wulf The Saxon A Story of the Norman Conquest
Wulf The Saxon is another great historical fiction book written by G. A. Henty. This is a fantastic piece of writing to start learning about England's late medieval history which is entertaining and informative. Through Wulf's perspective, this tale presents the Saxon history preceding the Norman conquest of England. The youthful Wulf, then 15 years old, is introduced as Earl Harold's page. Wulf participates in the Battle of Stamford Bridge against the Norsemen and aids in the Welsh wars when Harold succeeds as king of England. Wulf is at Hastings when William of Normandy invades England and is a part of the English host. In this adventure tale, the hero defies all odds. To know who is the hero and how he will overcome all the odds, readers should read this novel! As always, Sir Henty does a fantastic job of giving the reader a fascinating story and a deeper understanding of history by skillfully fusing fiction with historical facts.
