The story is recounted through posts I published on my blog 2010-2015, documenting how I found this type of brewing in isolated areas in Norway and Lithuania. It also tells the story of how I discovered a so far unknown type of beer yeast called "kveik".

Farm Girl Becomes World Traveler
In 2020 I became 80 years old, and I suddenly realize that if I don't write my memoir now, I will either die first or become so old my mind will not allow me to remember anything to write!!! So here goes-I will go straight through my life and get it done, no matter how literal or exciting (?) it is or isn't!!! I know I have had a very good life, although it has not been without some pain and sadness. Hopefully, I have become stronger from it all. God's help has been continual, and I am very grateful for the training provided by my dear parents and my various churches-Methodist, Catholic, and Lutheran. I remember getting a pin for attending 13 years of Sunday School without missing a Sunday. When we went on vacation, my Sunday School Superintendent mother always found a place for us to visit.
Writing in Ice
If you had to choose a new location for a crime series, where would you look? Michael Ridpath had to do just that. He chose Iceland, a country of fjords, glaciers and volcanoes, of long, manic summer days and long, sinister winter evenings, a place where everyone is on Facebook and everyone's grandmother has spoken to an elf. This is his account of researching the country: the breathtaking landscape, its vigorous if occasionally odd people, the great heroes and heroines of its sagas, and (of course) those troublesome elves; with a little bit thrown in about how to put together a good detective story.Entertaining and informative, it's a guide to Iceland for the visitor, and a guide to crime writing for the reader.

Bloggers Guide to Arctic Finland
The Bloggers Guide To Arctic Finland is a compilation of the author's blog articles over 10 years. The first blog that Victor started was way back in 2009. That early blog was named Nordic Cuisine Focus. The blog content covers 12-holiday destinations in the Arctic Finland region that Victor enjoyed visiting, working at, photographing, and writing content on and publishing. The articles were focused mainly on the natural Nordic environment, Finland, regional produce, ingredients, nature, traditional culture, and cuisine. Finland's documented history of the last 1000 years is a fascinating resource to learn more about the people of the Nordic region. Finland has 600 years of modern history, 400 years under the rule of Swedish kings, 100 years under Russian rule, and 100 years of coexistence with Soviet Russia. The collective time that Finland's people have served under these foreign rulers for 500 years was never invited or voluntary.Victor writes about 12 Arctic Finland travel destinations where he has worked, skied, snowboarded, trekked, traveled, and photographed. A brief layout of Lapland municipalities is included, with West, East, North, and central Rovaniemi, Lapland. There are many Nordic cuisine-related pictures, travel routes, location maps, historical facts, and traditional Nordic Cuisine flavor recipes. A fascinating story with pictures and maps of how the 1939-1940 Baltic Sea blockade was diverted via the Arctic Sea Route to the Port of Petsamo in Arctic Finland supplies the city Rovaniemi. From there distributed throughout Finland and Sweden.

My Love Affair With Italy
As a 17-year old Italian American from New Jersey, Debbie became obsessed with the idea of traveling to Italy, and during the summer after completing her junior year in high school, she realized her dream when her parents agreed to send her on a student tour for 40 days with no one she knew. Friendships form with another American student, and with Cesare, an Italian medical student living in the same "hotel." But what transpires is something no one ever expected, especially her mom. Over the next 45 years, Debbie returns 11 more times, mostly alone. Other trips include her two best friends, another with her father, and one horseback riding adventure in the Chianti Region of Tuscany with cousins. Some of the places visited include Rome, Tuscany, the Almalfi Coast, Sicily, Capri, and a 2,500 year-old village in Umbria where the only mode of transportation allowed is a moped or donkey. One hundred years after her great grandmother migrated to America, Debbie locates her family in the most unusual way, culminating with a heartwarming reception. Rarely staying in hotels, My Love Affair With Italy describes each of the trips, all the types of accommodations such as the agriturismi (farmhouses), the apartments, vineyards, the medieval villages, monastery, villas, and horseback riding centers she stayed in addition to the romances and friends met along the way. At the age of 50, Debbie learns how to horseback ride English style and takes a 100-mile tour cantering through Tuscany, something she was not nearly qualified to do. Within a year, she becomes an exchange student and enrolls in school in Siena, one of Tuscany's most magnificent cities, to learn Italian and moves in with a local family, she not knowing Italian and they not knowing English. While in school, she befriends a German woman who invites her to stay at her home in the beautiful Bavarian Alps during her next visit to Europe, and Debbie accepts in an attempt to practice Italian with her former classmate, but the trip becomes a shocking revelation. The book also details the "jewels" of Rome not mentioned in brochures such as The Scala Sancta, the Holy Stairs, holy because they are said to be the stairs that Jesus climbed on his way to his trial before Pontius Pilate, and the Aventine Keyhole, a nondescript-looking door on the Aventine Hill, neatly placing the dome of St. Peter's right in the center. Each trip also details why she returns each time, the struggles endured at home after becoming a caregiver, the 50-year friendships that get her through it all, and the shocking way her father shows his presence in Piazza Navona. Lastly, four decades after it all began, there are very surprising reunions and the most unusual romance.

Things That Crash, Things That Fly
As a husband and wife make plans for an Italian vacation with friends-to visit her family's Tuscan village-she makes an unexpected, last-minute addition to the itinerary: she plans to leave him upon their return to the States. And her bombshell includes a strange caveat. He isn't allowed to breathe a word of it to their traveling companions. So begins Things That Crash, Things That Fly, the groundbreaking new memoir from award-winning writer Scott Gould.Gould navigates that awkward vacation with his soon-to-be estranged wife in Serra, Italy, then sets out on another, longer journey-a winding route through heartbreak and anger, confusion and futility, despair and discovery. When Gould wangles (under dubious circumstances) a fellowship to research the death of William Guilfoil, a young WWII fighter pilot who crashed and died in the hills near Serra, he instead sets his sights on clarity and closure in his ex-wife's ancestral home. As he grinds through an uncharted future, his story and Guilfoil's become intertwined, and Gould gathers the fragments of a fractured heart. With a brutal honesty tempered with surprising humor, he tells us how he begins to stitch them back together.Things That Crash, Things That Fly is about many things: lost love, daughters and fathers, evaporating marriage, Italian sandals, friendship, bad knees, acrobatic birds, secrecy, oddly placed piercings...but most of all, Gould's inventive memoir is about how it's truly possible to rise and soar, even after you've struck the ground.
To Israel, With Love
Think of it, three of the world's five major religions all began in that very spot! On the one hand, it's such a very common and ordinary spot, too. But for all of its commonness and in all of its ordinariness, it is the place where three of the world's greatest religions were born.I could not find any book that really prepared me for this trip. I promised myself I would write one simple enough for anyone to understand: a guide that would explain some of the unexplained mysteries and collect all the various names for a place so it could be charted on a map. I tried to write objectively―but I am a Christian: born, raised, and remain in the Bible belt, so my perspective probably reveals unintended bias. I am not trying to convert anyone, just presenting the facts and letting the reader make their own conclusions.Since this book is about travel and not intended to be scholarly, I won't burden the pages with sources and footnotes. My sources are very general and ordinary with a complete bibliography at the end, and I do include Bible references at times. The acronyms for different Bible versions are in the "Bibliography by Title" section at the back. This nonfiction book is fully illustrated with more than two hundred photos, mostly by the author, and includes many maps of the area. More than a travelogue featuring biblical events showing where each actually took place more than two thousand years ago, this book also describes what it might be like to visit that place now. It is my hope this journal will at least in some small way provide information to make such a trip more rewarding for you, and that the book will be treasured as a historical record of travel in the late 20th century and early 21st.It took twenty years, two trips to Israel, tons of research, and now here it is. If you have ever dreamed of visiting this incredible country, this book is for you.
