L矇on Degrelle in Exile (1945-1994)

2022/05/27 出版

Crash landing in San Sebasti獺n, Spain in 1945, SS-Standartenf羹hrer L矇on Joseph Marie Ignace Degrelle (1906-1994) narrowly escaped death from his native Belgium and the Allied forces. Stripped of his Belgian citizenship and sentenced to death in absentia for his part in the German side of WWII, Degrelle lived the rest of his life in exile in Spain, harbored unofficially by Franco's government. During these forty-nine years in exile, Degrelle never expressed any regret for his place in the war, nor did he remain silent as fantastic narratives were woven about the events of the war and the supposed atrocities of the Germans and their allies in the decades following. Despite attacks on his family, vilification by the whole world, and many conflicts with the Church, he never wavered in either his Catholic faith, or his conviction in National Socialism.L矇on Degrelle in Exile (1945-1994) presents the story of these forty-nine years, complete with extensive letters between Degrelle and his friends and family, interviews, speeches, and anecdotes from those who knew and loved him. Degrelle was one of the few remaining from the Axis side to share his account of the war and his commentary on the world as it changed drastically after their defeat in 1945.Antelope Hill Publishing is proud to present Jos矇 Lu穩s Jerez Riesco's L矇on Degrelle in Exile (1945-1994) translated into English for the important task of preserving this great man's legacy.

The Guide to Venice (Murano, Burano, the 100 Year Old Restaurant, the House of Marco Polo, the Canals and Bridges) from Pearl Escapes 2017

Pearl,Howie  著
Lulu.com 出版
2022/05/05 出版

I used to get extremely burnt out and couldn't even handle booking a hotel or flight when I did have time off. I thought "Wouldn't it be awesome if someone would write a guide that gave you one perfect escape; the hotel, sight, flight and restaurant." So that's what I did. (Although this one doesn't have a spa!) My new series of mini-guides is specifically designed to give you the precise information, the recipe you need to have the adventure - without getting bogged down with too many choices or details. Venice waits for you. It is the home of the artist, the writer, adventurer or madman (depending on how you look at it) for thousands of years. Their spirit abides, Marco Polo, Da Vinci, Shakespeare, Christie... haunting the canals, which demand exploration and defy explorers. "You will come away feeling as if she was sharing with you personally and will want to read more of her life adventures." "I finally feel like I'm really living, not just surviving."

Camino De La Luna - Forgiveness (Without Pictures)

Pearl,Howie  著
Lulu.com 出版
2022/05/05 出版

It takes something really powerful to make you leave Hawai'i (or you know, running out of money). I found myself called back to England by my heart, but not for long. It wasn't yet time to settle, it was time to explore another country I'd once fallen in love with, Croatia and to see if I could find a home, a place to rest and write. I didn't have any idea quite how much more I had to learn, to understand and this journey was going to show me, above all things, the power of forgiveness.

Camino De La Luna - Unconditional Love (Without Pictures)

Pearl,Howie  著
Lulu.com 出版
2022/05/05 出版

In June 2016 I decided to sell my house of 22 years and leave my comfort zone. Slowly the Camino de Santiago showed itself and I decided, with no rucksack or hiking experience to start... But that's another story, the one that led to this. My Camino taught me to let go, to travel light and wash my clothes in the shower, but most importantly it taught me to trust my heart and my feet, to let my journey unfold naturally, instinctively, intuitively. In the words of the theme song from my favourite TV show, "Nobody knows where they might end up" when they follow their heart. Riding high on reaching the true destination of my Camino I raced to the airport to leave a country I'd fallen in love with but which I'd had enough of (for the moment). There were two flights out that night; Seattle or Vancouver. My heart was calling me to Seattle, the Emerald City, the home of my TV family, but it all depended on my cab driver and how fast I could run with a loaded rucksack.

Walking in the Footsteps of Odysseus

Jane Cochrane 出版
2022/04/27 出版

This book has been updated in 2024. It leads the visitor on a self-guided tour of Homer's Ithaca. It follows ancient footpaths to landmarks traditionally identified by Homerists, philologists and archaeologists with the descriptions made by Homer in his epic poem The Odyssey. Visitors can see for themselves the landscape and topography of Ithaca and make their own comparisons with the ancient words of Homer. The guide follows the footsteps of the island's ancient hero Odysseus on his return to his beloved home island. The paths lead to the site, at Agios Athanasios / School of Homer, most widely believed by scholars to be that of his palace. There the finds made between 1994 and 2010 by the archaeologists Litsa and Thanasis Papadopoulos from the University of Ioannina in Central Greece are described. Homer's epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey are among the oldest extant works of Western literature, on which they have had a profound influence. The Iliad tells the story of the ninth year of the Trojan War; The Odyssey tells how King Odysseus, a hero of that war, makes his eventful journey back to his home island of Ithaca. By the time Odysseus arrived back on Ithacan soil, twenty years had passed since he set out to fight in the Trojan War. He left behind his young wife, Penelope, and their baby son, Telemachus. Back in Ithaca, as the years went by, Penelope was besieged by suitors who assumed that Odysseus was dead and wanted to claim his kingdom. The poet Homer describes Odysseus' reunion, first with his son, Telemachus, a baby when he left and now a fine young man, and then with his loyal wife, Penelope. He tells, in gruesome detail, how he and a small group of colleagues kill all 108 of Penelope's suitors. Twelve out of 24 books of The Odyssey take place after Odysseus' arrival back in Ithaca. This famous story was passed down through the generations for over 3,000 years. Yet, even after all these years, and its many different translations, it is hard not to conclude that, to make such precise descriptions, Homer must have visited Ithaca to see its landscape with his own eyes. There are a few objects, coins and tripods, on public display on Ithaca, and some that can be seen elsewhere, that firmly link the hero Odysseus with this island and no other. These are also described in this guide along with a brief background history of their discovery. Many and varied theories have been recently put forward that the location of Homeric Ithaca may be in a different place to the modern Greek island of Ithaca. These are summarised along with the main arguments used in their support. The main reasons why these do not hold water are then briefly explained. After taking the walks described in this book the intelligent visitor may be convinced that the kingdom of Odysseus was centred on this island, and that Homeric and modern Ithaca are one and the same.

The Lakes of Northern Italy

Lulu.com 出版
2022/04/02 出版

The Lakes in Northern Italy are the destination of local and international tourism. It's an oasis of a mild climate in the middle of the Pianura Padana. You are away from hot and humid summers and cold and foggy winters. Lake Orta, Lake Maggiore, Lake Lugano, and Lake Como have been vacation destinations for the Milanese for centuries. The rich and the poor. It takes just a few euros to go from Milan to one of these lakes using the cheap regional trains. People used this means of transportation for decades before the mass use of the car. Today, with the traffic becoming unbearable, people discover regional trains again. The car's advantage is that it allows you to pass from one Lake to another. Without going back to Milan, it makes it possible as you would with the train. You have here a guide to a multi-day car trip to these lakes. It starts from Novara; then it goes to the Lake's region, beginning with the Orta Lake, small and less famous. It then goes to Stresa on Lake Maggiore, with its beautiful Borromean Islands and the internationally renowned localities: Isola Bella, Isola dei Pescatori, and Isola Madre. It continues driving on the west coast of the Lake, visiting Villa Taranto, with its outstanding gardens, and is a natural beauty in springtime, when the azaleas are blossoming. It is the best time of the year to visit the area. Continuing the west coast of the Lake, it passes through Cannero Riviera and Cannobio and enters Switzerland. Don't forget to bring your passport with you! Brissago is the next town, then Locarno, and Lugano and Lake. There are several one-day itineraries to visit the attractions in Canton Ticino. Most can be seen in one day from Lake Lugano. We re-enter Italy near Como on Lake Como, and we visit the city and its historical attractions. From Como. a tour takes us to visit Cernobbio, Isola Comacina, Villa del Balbianello and Villa Carlotta arriving in Menaggio. Taking the Ferry, we visit Bellagio, the Pearl of the Lake, and then Varenna, with its Villa Monastero, Castel Vezio. Then, continuing the east coast, we arrive at Lecco, from where we have a diversion to ascent the Grigna, the Dolomite-like Mountain dominating the Lake. We also encounter the people making the famous Taleggio cheese on the hill. A quick section brings us to Monza and its park and then to Milan, where the itinerary ends.

An Inland Voyage

Ingram 出版
2022/03/10 出版

"For will anyone dare to tell me that business is more entertaining than fooling among boats? He must have never seen a boat, or never seen an office, who says so." -Robert Louis Stevenson, An Inland Voyage (1878)This jacketed hardcover edition of An Inland Voyage (1878), by Robert Louis Stevenson, describes a canoe trip through France and Belgium that he took with his friend Sir Walter Grindlay Simpson in 1876. Although he had never been in a canoe before, Stevenson was an excellent traveler and enjoyed every aspect of the adventure. His book describes barges, with "their flower-pots and smoking chimneys," and fishermen, "stupefied with contentment." In addition, the author reflects on the mindlessness of canoeing, with the "ecstatic stupor" it provides, along with wider issues, including the French character and the artist's role in society.

The Temporary European

2022/02/01 出版

Write guidebooks, make travel TV, lead bus tours? Cameron Hewitt has been Rick Steves' right hand for more than 20 years, doing just that. The Temporary European is a collection of vivid, entertaining travel tales from across Europe. Cameron zips you into his backpack for engaging and inspiring experiences: sampling spleen sandwiches at a Palermo street market; hiking alone with the cows high in the Swiss Alps; simmering in Budapest's thermal baths; trekking across an English moor to a stone circle; hand-rolling pasta at a Tuscan agriturismo; shivering through Highland games in a soggy Scottish village; and much more. Along the way, Cameron introduces us to his favorite Europeans. In Mostar, Alma demonstrates how Bosnian coffee isn't just a drink, but a social ritual. In France, Mathilde explains that the true mastery of a fromager isn't making cheese, but aging it. In Spain, Fran proudly eats acorns, but never corn on the cob. While personal, the stories also tap into the universal joy of travel. Cameron's travel motto (inspired by a globetrotting auntie) is "Jams Are Fun"-the fondest memories arrive when your best-laid plans go sideways. And he encourages travelers to stow their phones and guidebooks, slow down, and savor those magic moments that arrive between stops on a busy itinerary. The stories are packed with inspiration and insights for your next trip, including how to find the best gelato in Italy, how to select the best produce at a Proven癟al market, how to navigate Spain's confusing tapas scene, and how to survive the experience of driving in Sicily (hint: just go numb). And you'll get a reality check for every traveler's "dream job" researching and writing guidebooks; guiding busloads of Americans on tours around Europe; scouting and producing a travel TV show; and working with Rick Steves and his merry band of travelers. It's a candid account of how the sausage gets made in the travel business-told with warts-and-all honesty and a sense of humor. For Rick Steves fans, or anyone who loves Europe, The Temporary European is inspiring, insightful, and fun.

The Aran Islands (Esprios Classics)

Blurb 出版
2022/02/01 出版

Edmund John Millington Synge (16 April 1871 - 24 March 1909) was an Irish playwright, poet, writer, collector of folklore, and a key figure in the Irish Literary Revival. His best known play The Playboy of the Western World was poorly received, due to its bleak ending, depiction of Irish peasants, and idealisation of parricide, leading to hostile audience reactions and riots in Dublin during its opening run at Abbey Theatre, Dublin, which he had co-founded with W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory. His other major works include "In the Shadow of the Glen" (1903), "Riders to the Sea" (1904), "The Well of the Saints" (1905), and "The Tinker's Wedding" (1909).

Locked Down in Florence

2022/01/13 出版

Having visited Italy numerous times before, in 2020 Phil Piccigallo, his wife, and their wire-haired fox terrier, Dante, embark on a Dream Trip to spend four months in their beloved adopted city of Florence. Ten days after their arrival, Italy locks down due to the Covid-19 pandemic-the first time in modern history an entire nation is shuttered-and their extended trip morphs into nearly ten months and two lockdowns. Still, there couldn't be a better place for a couple of art, history, and food lovers to be quarantined than the birthplace of the Renaissance and the home to amazing cuisine and wine. Undaunted, they adventurously set out to maximize their experience, even while desperately seeking to stay safe and healthy, proving that even in retirement, those who insist on living life to its fullest can do so if they are smart, resolute, resilient, and courageous.Travelers and lovers of Italy and all things Italian, are sure to enjoy this excellent travel adventure, as will readers looking for a fact-based explanation of the Covid-19 pandemic in Italy and Europe, as compared to the US.
