But not just any dog. She needs a dog to help her with her work. Cybil is a beehive inspector who works to ensure the health of commercial beehives in Maryland. Hundreds of hives are shipped across the country as farmers need bees to pollinate their crops. Without the bees, there wouldn't be foods like apples, almonds, and strawberries. But the bees must be healthy to be shipped, and there's a deadly disease, foulbrood, that is highly contagious. If even one infected hive left the state, entire bee populations could be wiped out. Dogs, with their ultrasensitive sense of smell, can sniff out even the tiniest scent of foulbrood in a hive. A well-trained, focused detection dog can inspect 50 hives in 10 minutes. Work that would take Cybil an entire day to do. When Cybil meets Mack, an unruly and lonely dog, she wonders if she has found her canine colleague. Wings to fly
The photos in this book came from many visits outdoors, to creeks and ponds and mountain trails and botanical gardens all across Southern California. I was able to capture these insects with my camera as they took a break from their flight because I walk trails quietly, patiently looking at each flower, on each stalk or stem, onto each leaf. Insects are easily frightened, and off they fly or run as your shadow crosses their eyes or as your breath reaches their sensitive hairs. Approach flowers slowly, carefully, with your camera at the ready. Step softly, for insects have survived for millions of years because they can sense the vibrations that approaching feet make. Beautiful life surrounds you, very small and normally unseen. Get outdoors and find it. Capture it with your camera so that when you return home you can enjoy the wonders that Earth has in store for you.

Learn about animals and nature from the mess they leave behind! All animals poop but no two are the same! Did you know that storks use their poop mixed with wee, as a type of sunblock to protect their legs from the heat of the sun, whilst wombats mark their territory with poop-shaped cubes. Whose Poop? is a fun and educational book which teaches children about different animals and their poo.
Butterflies
Butterflies come in every color of the rainbow. Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, brown, black, and white. But their vibrant wings aren't just beautiful, they give each butterfly a special power too. Over the years, butterflies' wings have brightened, dulled and transformed as they adapt to their ever-changing environments, helping them survive and thrive through everything from the industrial revolution to the climate crisis.Colors help butterflies camouflage and stay safe in their surroundings, making them disappear among vibrant flower petals and invisible against bronze tree trunks. Intricate patterns on their wings confuse and scare away predators, but they can attract the perfect mate too. And then there are some butterflies who are not in fact the color the appear to be at all--instead they are iridescent and simply reflecting the light. In this beautifully illustrated book, you'll discover hundreds of different colored and patterned butterflies from around the world and find out what makes them so special. You'll also learn about the butterfly life cycle, their sense of smell, taste and sight, flight and migration, as well as what butterflies have mean to us and why they're important players in our ecosystem. CONTENTS INCLUDE - Stunning gallery-style spreads grouping butterflies together by color- Detailed examination of the four stages of the butterfly life cycle: Egg-larva-chrysalis-butterfly- The amazing Monarch migration from North America to Mexico- How color works in butterfly wings, and how butterflies use color to their advantage- The threats to butterfly populations and things we can do to help- The survival techniques of caterpillars Author Jon Dunn is a natural history writer, photographer, and wildlife tour guide based in the Shetland Isles, Scotland, but with strong links in mainland Europe and North America that see him traveling widely in search of memorable wildlife encounters. Jon's words are accompanied by stunningly detailed watercolor illustrations by South African artist Georgina Taylor.
