The Dancing Light
The Dancing Light is the second in a series of books by dance educator Karen Diaz Ensanian, created to facilitate dance making with young children. The book exposes them to beautiful visual art, view photos of young dancers demonstrating science concepts through their movement, and hear poetic verse and action words that help them illustrate the nature of LIGHT. By embodying this information, the student makes deep connections in their body, mind, to the world, and to the nature of light. This is an opportunity to learn by way of movement. Internalizing the information and imagery, students will gain a greater understanding of light and possibilities for creativity. Throughout the book there are questions that provide opportunities for children to find their own unique ways of moving. The journey of the book follows the path of light: light found in nature, light that is man-made, the way light moves through reflection and refraction, its importance for plant life, and finally what happens when light is blocked. Each of the thirteen original paintings by the author combined with the photos of dancers can also be used as a tool for creating dance lessons in the classroom that enrich the study of LIGHT. Paintings set the stage for the creation of dances with different light concepts such as sunlight, bioluminescence, shadows, electricity, lightning, reflection, refraction, and more. 'Tips for Parents and Teachers' in the back of the book offer a simple set of suggestions for structuring a dance. Everyone can find inspiration in the dance of light. The author's first book, I Can Make a Water Dance, uses a similar format to connect the water cycle with dance. It is successfully being used by Pre-K -5 to enrich the study of the water cycle.

Uncle Vanya
Uncle Vanya by Anton ChekhovUncle Vanya is a play by the Russian playwright Anton Chekhov. It was first published in 1898 and received its Moscow premi癡re in 1899 in a production by the Moscow Art Theatre, under the direction of Konstantin Stanislavski. The play portrays the visit of an elderly professor and his glamorous, much younger second wife, Yelena, to the rural estate that supports their urban lifestyle. Two friends-Vanya, brother of the professor's late first wife, who has long managed the estate, and Astrov, the local doctor-both fall under Yelena's spell, while bemoaning the ennui of their provincial existence. Sonya, the professor's daughter by his first wife, who has worked with Vanya to keep the estate going, suffers from her unrequited feelings for Dr. Astrov. Uncle Vanya is unique among Chekhov's major plays because it is essentially an extensive reworking of his own play published a decade earlier, The Wood Demon. By elucidating the specific changes Chekhov made during the revision process-these include reducing the cast-list from almost two dozen down to nine, changing the climactic suicide of The Wood Demon into the famous failed homicide of Uncle Vanya, and altering the original happy ending into a more problematic, less final resolution-critics such as Donald Rayfield, Richard Gilman, and Eric Bentley have sought to chart the development of Chekhov's dramaturgical method through the 1890s.Rayfield cites recent scholarship suggesting Chekhov revised The Wood Demon during his trip to the island of Sakhalin, a prison colony in Eastern Russia, in 1891.Aleksandr Vladimirovich Serebryakov (Александр Владимирович Серебряков): a retired university professor, who has lived for years in the city on the earnings of his late first wife's rural estate, managed for him by Vanya and Sonya.Helena Andreyevna Serebryakova (Yelena) (Елена Андреевна Серебрякова): Professor Serebryakov's young and beautiful second wife. She is 27 years old.Sofia Alexandrovna Serebryakova (Sonya) (Софья Александровна Серебрякова): Professor Serebryakov's daughter from his first marriage. She is of a marriageable age, but is considered plain.Maria Vasilyevna Voynitskya (Мария Васильевна Войницкая): the widow of a privy councilor and mother of Vanya (and of Vanya's late sister, the Professor's first wife).Ivan Petrovich Voynitsky ("Uncle Vanya") (Иван Петрович Войницкий): Maria's son and Sonya's uncle, the title character of the play. He is 47 years old.

I Can Make a Water Dance
I Can Make a Water Dance is the first in a planned series of children's dance and science discovery books, that connects dance with processes in nature. Dancers magically rise out of the mist, curl like splashes in the river, and sail as trailing clouds. The embodiment of natural phenomena allows the dancers to learn about the water cycle in a unique way, learn something about their own bodies, and stimulates creative thinking. The book is presented in two-page spreads. The left side contains text that describes the stage of the water cycle, poetry that vividly portrays the action that is taking place, and a question that invites the readers to think of additional ways that movement can be found in that phase of water. The dynamic movement words invite young listeners to transform themselves into water and extend their vocabulary, helping develop literacy. On the right side of the spread is a lush painting demonstrating how that stage of water moves. Superimposed dancer photos on the paintings are presented as part of the action. Creating a dance about water immediately becomes understandable. There are fifteen paintings that include Mist, Clouds, Storm Cloud, Rain, Puddle, Rainbow, Snow, Ice, Stream, River, Waterfall, Lake, Geyser, Ocean, and Water Cycle. Near the end of the book is a two-page spread of all the dancers with accompanying action words, inviting children to create their own dance. The final page includes tips for parents and teachers.

Music and Its Story (Yesterday's Classics)
Engaging introduction to the history of music, beginning with the earliest instruments playing simple notes in a primitive setting and proceeding to follow over the long course of history the development of instruments, the increase in musical complexity, the variety of musical forms, and expansion of settings in which music is played. Advances in these four strands were not independent though, and the author takes pains to show how advances in one led to advances in another. In the course of the book the reader learns much about the development of solo instruments and the growth of the modern orchestra, the introduction of harmony and development of musical forms such as fugues, sonatas, symphonies, and concertos, and the role music has played in both religious and secular settings. Includes over four dozen melodic excerpts illustrating the concepts described.
Tommaso Traetta and the Fusion of Italian and French Opera in Parma
In 1759, the court of the Italian Duchy of Parma adopted the inspiration of cultural creators who recommended a reform of Italian opera along French lines. These writers favored combining Italian-style music with the wider range of musical genres and scenic variety of French opera. As the music critic and commentator George W. Loomis shows in this groundbreaking volume, the young composer Tommaso Traetta was engaged to create new operas responding to these demands. As Loomis deftly demonstrates, Traetta's operas were largely oriented toward the formal aria, a byproduct of making Italian music an essential component of this cross-cultural fusion. Nevertheless, they were strikingly innovative in their use of chorus, integrated dance, and accompanied recitative. Structurally, the operas reflect the French distinction between scenes of action and divertissements. After a brief flowering, the project was abandoned, primarily for lack of interest, but Traetta's Parma operas deserve a previously unrecognized place in the history of Western music for their stimulation of opera seria in Italy and beyond. This included the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose genre-defining Idomeneo (1781) proved a turning point in the development of opera.
