Muriel,West  著
Ingram 出版
2025/07/02 出版

"No pet can wish for more than this: to be lovingly cared for while alive, and fondly remembered thereafter."This story is an almost-true personal account of Muffin; a lovable, floppy-eared, mixed-breed dog. Born in Nova Scotia in 1980, Muffin's tale begins with a military family who are challenged to give him the care that a frisky young pup requires. Fortuitously, he acquires a new forever-home with a kind young couple who are seeking a guard-dog.Over the course of his lifetime, Muffin experiences love, loss, and the simple joys of life, leaving an indelible mark on the many friends he makes, human and otherwise. Set against the backdrop of rural Nova Scotia, this story celebrates the forging of deep bonds which are possible between people and their cherished furry companions. This chapter book is designed for the enjoyment of children, particularly from ages of 5-10. Atlantic Canadian children especially may relate well to this story. The author sincerely hopes that readers of all ages will delight in Muffin's clever autobiography as much as she has enjoyed helping Muffin craft his simple yarn.

Ablaze

Ingram 出版
2025/06/17 出版

A lyrical and empowering biography on Deanne Shulman, America's first female smokejumper. Deanne loved being outdoors. With her family, she spent summers sailing the Salton Sea and backpacking the Sierra Nevada Mountains. As she grew older, her love of nature only grew. So when the heat rose each fire season and the blazes burned near and far, she noticed. Deanne knew she had to do her part in fighting the fires. She spent years on woodland crews, clearing brush and branches that could make the fire spread, and on hotshot crews where she fought faster fires and took bigger risks, spending weeks in one-hundred-degree heat working twenty-four-hour shifts. But what Deanne really wanted was to be a smokejumper, to jump from planes and parachute into dangerous wildfires that no truck could ever reach. To be the first line of defense. The only problem? There had never been a female smokejumper before. With lyrical text from Jessica Lawson and striking illustrations from Sarah Gonzales, Ablaze tells the story of Deanne Shulman's groundbreaking work with the United States Forest Service as she fought against unfair rules and blazed the way for women in firefighting.

The young adult edition of the unconventionally honest, deeply personal, and sharply funny account from Michigan governor and rising Democratic star Gretchen Whitmer "will appeal to readers interested in politics and those seeking insights on leadership and attaining success" (Kirkus Reviews). When Gretchen Whitmer was growing up, her beloved grandmother Nino taught her that you can always find something good in other people. "Even the meanest person might have pretty eyes," she would say, a piece of advice that Gretchen carries with her today in her role as the governor of Michigan. (And one that resonated more than another her grandmother offered: "never part your hair in the middle.") From navigating a kidnapping and assassination plot in which she herself was a target to facing monumental challenges during a global pandemic, Big Gretch (as she's now known) shares the key pieces of wisdom that have shaped her trailblazing career and personal experiences in this often hilarious, always uplifting book. Along the way, she tells stories about growing up gutsy in the Midwest, the wild comments she's encountered as a public figure, and how to neutralize high-profile bullies with a fearless sense of humor. Told in her famously straightforward and slyly funny voice, this young adult edition of the governor's story not only offers an intimate insight into the life of a politician with an astounding journey, but also affords extraordinary lessons for young people everywhere who wish to make a difference in the world.

Saving Hawai'i's Honu

Reycraft 出版
2025/06/08 出版

Dive into the life story of George Balazs, the American sea turtle scientist responsible for bringing awareness to and ultimately saving the green sea turtle population of Hawai'i. When George Balazs saw his first green sea turtle, or honu, his life changed forever. He moved to Hawai'i to study the beautiful animals but was deeply concerned by what he found in local restaurants and stores. Right before his eyes, he saw the green sea turtle population dwindling from people serving turtle soup, turtle steaks, and even selling turtle shell jewelry. George asked himself one question: How many honu are left in Hawai'i? What happened next was the journey of a lifetime. George lived on remote beaches, learning from the turtles and advocating for their protection-all to save Hawai'i's honu from extinction. George Balzazs spent his entire life researching the Hawai'i green sea turtle, educating the public all the way up to the state level of government. His persistence resulted in Hawaiian state legislators to ban the commercialization of sea turtles. Saving Hawai'i's Honu is the perfect introduction to students about the importance of protecting the world's wildlife population. Educators have the opportunity to discuss the sea turtle population with this story and then expand on studies of other endangered species around the world.

I Remember

Ingram 出版
2025/06/04 出版

I remember that fear kept boys and girls broken, with tangled spirits, silenced for years. In 1965, at the tender age of four, Marian Duncan was taken to Lejac residential school. She arrived wearing the new blue dress and velvet shoes her grandmother had bought for her that very day. Within the first minutes of her arrival, the clothes were taken, her hair was cut short and her unforgettable, unforgivable experience of residential school life began. The next nine years of her life were to be filled with longing for her parents and grandparents, learning to endure endless harsh punishments, sneaking moments and hugs with older siblings, creating supportive friendships and an attempted escape.Marian continues to heal and brings a forgiving, loving approach to life. She sends love and good wishes to all she encounters, despite the lasting impacts of her residential school experiences. We hope readers of Marian's story develop a deeper sense of empathy and respect for Indigenous people in this country. We hope they see strength in Marian and others in similar circumstances. We know readers will feel great sorrow for the children and families impacted by residential schools, and we hope they feel admiration for the way many are overcoming their past trauma and leading lives that are making a better future for the next generations.

Laura Secord

John,Bassett  著
2025/06/03 出版

Born in Massachusetts, Laura came to Upper Canada at the age of 18 and married James Secord. Their happy life in Queenston was disrupted by the outbreak of the War of 1812. At first the war went well for the British, but after General Brock was killed at Queenston, American forces advanced, and some offices were billeted with the Secords. When Laura overheard American soldiers planning a surprise attack she unhesitatingly set out on a dangerous 32 km trek across enemy lines in order to warn the British general, Fitzgibbon. Her brave action made the battle of Beaver Dams a British victory. Secord's role was not immediately acknowledged. In fact, she and her family suffered a great deal more at the hands of American troops, and they were strained by the economic turmoil war brings for many years after the peace. Recognition did come to her in later years, however. Her biography gives a rich impression of life in Upper Canada in the early nineteenth century.

Junko's Climb

Elyssa,Gavin  著
Ingram 出版
2025/06/02 出版

Spring 1975. Fourteen climbers from the Ladies Climbing Club in Japan begin their climb up Mount Everest. Junko Tabei, a mountain climbing pioneer--the woman who formed the group --faces many hardships as she leads them: frigid temperatures, gusting winds, an avalanche, injuries, altitude sickness, and a death-defying ice ridge crossing. Yet she perseveres, and when she reaches the summit of Mount Everest, she becomes the first woman--and the 36th person--to do so! While Junko made history with her trailblazing climb, her path was far from easy. She was small in stature, and often sick as a child. Most climbing clubs of her time were only for men who put up countless obstacles to keep Junko from climbing. But she didn't let her gender, size, or traditional societal norms stop her. Junko trained hard, formed her own climbing club for women, and became passionate about preserving mountains and wild spaces. Junko's story shows that determination triumphs over every obstacle, and her climb goes beyond her historical accomplishment--as of June 2020, she has inspired 630 females to follow in her footsteps.

Beyond the Board

Maya,Gabeira  著
Amulet Books 出版
2025/05/30 出版

In this thrilling YA memoir, pro surfer Maya Gabeira tells the awe-inspiring true story of her journey from unstoppable teenager to the Guinness World Record-holding legend she is today. Who am I, beyond the board? Surf legend Maya Gabeira is famous for her nerve. Her surfing journey began at the age of fourteen and reached a high when she set (and later broke) a Guinness World Record for highest wave conquered by any big wave surfer--man or woman--after bouncing back from a near-fatal accident. Gabeira has been heralded as one of the top surfers of her generation. But who is the ferocious personality beyond the board? What are the stories behind the relationships and challenges that shaped her into the indomitable surfer, women's rights advocate, and champion for mental health awareness she is today? For the first time ever, Maya looks back on her formative years: the romances, career highs, vulnerabilities, and setbacks that defined her at an early age. At seventeen, she left her home in Rio de Janeiro in order to chase waves around the world, toting a single backpack and waiting tables to get by. Maya carved her own path as a teen, defining her own remarkable narrative: that of a vulnerable, passionate, and driven young woman who learned never to flinch--even in the face of death.
