What We See and Don't See, 2nd ed.
The fourth book in Hoopoe's "All About Me" series, What We See and Don't See explores what science and research show about how we perceive our world. Readers will learn how the brain makes sense of what's around us, and how it simplifies and organizes information - how we see what we see and, sometimes, don't see what's obviously in front of us. Author Robert Guarino explains how our five senses can be "extended" and our perception enhanced. He explores how there's more to perception than what meets the eye (or ear, or nose, or...) - and how our culture can influence the way we experience our surroundings. This new edition of What We See and Don't See has been revised to incorporate the latest research findings and meet the American Psychological Association's National Standards for Psychology at the high-school level, the College Board AP Psychology standards and the National Board Standards for Science/Adolescence and Young Adulthood. The "All About Me" series presents books to help teens and preteens understand themselves and how they, as human beings, "work." This is fundamental information, but we often forget to teach it in school - for example, what psychologists know about how we see, think, and feel; how these abilities work, change, grow or get stuck; and how reliable they are as we try to make sense of ourselves, our friends, our relatives and the world around us. There is good, solid information readily available and scientifically validated - and it's all about you ... and me.
From Before the Beginning to Forevermore
Do you know some of the stories from the Bible? There's the story of how God created the earth; Noah and the ark; Joseph and his coat of many colors; Moses and the burning bush; David and the giant, Goliath; the story of Jesus's birth; many stories of Jesus healing people; and, of course, the wonderful story of the first Easter. Did you ever wonder how each of these stories and many others were chosen to be in the Bible and how they fit together? Each of these small stories is part of a much, much larger story. Now most stories begin and end. They start with "once upon a time" and end with "they lived happily ever after." The Bible is different because it is God's story, and He is a forever God. His story goes "from before the beginning" and continues "to forevermore," and it is all about His big plan for you and me. Are you interested in learning more? I should warn you that since God is so big, His story takes a bit of brain stretching to understand. But don't worry, brain stretching is not painful.

Brown Is Beautiful
As an early childhood educator of many years, author Kerissa Poss often heard kids describe the color brown as "ugly," "dirty," or "too dark." However, brown is beautiful! It can be friendly like a dog's wagging tail or strong like a tall tree. Brown is the color of chocolate, and everyone loves chocolate! With Kerissa's encouragement, the kids in her classes started choosing brown more quickly from their crayon boxes. What if you were reminded of all the wonderful things brown can be? Would you see the beauty in this often overlooked color? Brown Is Beautiful reminds us of all the wonderful things brown can be and to love ourselves just the way we are.
