The Names of the Wyandot
In this unique book, John Steckley discusses and catalogues the various names of the Indigenous people known as the Wyandot, including clan names, nicknames, differences in naming conventions by gender, and the names the Wyandot gave to the European settlers they encountered.Following first contact with Europeans in the early 17th century, the Wyandot were forced to move several times, first from their homeland in what is now Ontario, then from temporary communities around the upper Great Lakes. In the early 18th century, they moved to the Detroit area, where the Anderdon band still lives. Later that century some moved to Ohio where in Upper Sandusky and elsewhere they established a new homeland, only to be driven out in 1843 by settler expansion. They went first to Kansas, where a community still exists, and then to Oklahoma, where their only federally recognized tribe lives today as the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma.Over the centuries the Wyandot developed rich and evocative naming traditions and conventions. The author draws on nearly five decades of work studying the Wyandot and Wendat languages, and on his tenure as the tribal linguist for the Wyandotte Nation of Oklahoma, to provide a comprehensive guide to Wyandot naming practices. In addition to explaining basic naming conventions, Steckley discusses efforts to document Wyandot names, the evolution of those names over time, and the origins and nature of nicknames and clan names. The book closes with a comprehensive chapter setting out dozens of translations of Wyandot names.

Consonant-Induced Sound Changes in Stressed Vowels in Romance
The book investigates historical patterns of vowel diphthongization, assimilation and dissimilation induced by consonants - mostly (alveolo)palatals - in Romance. Compiling data from dialectal descriptions, old documentary sources and experimental phonetic studies, it explains why certain vowels undergo raising assimilation before (alveolo)palatal consonants more than others. It also suggests that in French, Francoproven癟al, Occitan, Rhaetoromance and dialects from northern Italy, mid low vowel diphthongization before (alveolo)palatal consonants started out with the formation of non-canonical falling diphthongs through off-glide insertion, from which rising diphthongs could emerge at a later date (e.g., Upper Engadinian OCTO 'eight' > [ɔc] > [ɔ(ə̯)c] > [wac]). Both diphthongal types, rather than canonical falling diphthongs with a palatal off-glide, could also give rise to high vowels (dialectal French [li]

Computational Modeling of Narrative
The field of narrative (or story) understanding and generation is one of the oldest in natural language processing (NLP) and artificial intelligence (AI), which is hardly surprising, since storytelling is such a fundamental and familiar intellectual and social activity. In recent years, the demands of interactive entertainment and interest in the creation of engaging narratives with life-like characters have provided a fresh impetus to this field. This book provides an overview of the principal problems, approaches, and challenges faced today in modeling the narrative structure of stories. The book introduces classical narratological concepts from literary theory and their mapping to computational approaches. It demonstrates how research in AI and NLP has modeled character goals, causality, and time using formalisms from planning, case-based reasoning, and temporal reasoning, and discusses fundamental limitations in such approaches. It proposes new representations for embedded narratives and fictional entities, for assessing the pace of a narrative, and offers an empirical theory of audience response. These notions are incorporated into an annotation scheme called NarrativeML. The book identifies key issues that need to be addressed, including annotation methods for long literary narratives, the representation of modality and habituality, and characterizing the goals of narrators. It also suggests a future characterized by advanced text mining of narrative structure from large-scale corpora and the development of a variety of useful authoring aids. This is the first book to provide a systematic foundation that integrates together narratology, AI, and computational linguistics. It can serve as a narratology primer for computer scientists and an elucidation of computational narratology for literary theorists. It is written in a highly accessible manner and is intended for use by a broad scientific audience that includes linguists (computational and formal semanticists), AI researchers, cognitive scientists, computer scientists, game developers, and narrative theorists. The Twins Stories
This work is a quantitative discourse study of referential devices in Yagua, a relatively unstudied language of the Amazon basin. Of particular interest are folktales in which the major participants are matched pairs, and which involve extensive use of direct speech. A major finding is that the indices of "Referential Distance" and "Persistence" quantify distinct functional domains.
Swahili and Sabaki
The Sabaki languages form a major Bantu subgroup and are spoken by 35 million East Africans in Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, and the Comoro Islands. The authors provide a historical/comparative treatment of Swahili (and other Sabaki languages), an account of the relationship of Swahili to Sabaki and to other Bantu languages, and some data on contemporary Sabaki languages. Data sets, appendices, maps, and figures present essential information on phonology, lexical makeup, and tense/aspect morphology. The final chapter is a synthesis describing the linguistic and historical relationship of the Sabaki dialects to each other and to hypothetical proto-stages.

Kawaiisu
Kawaiisu offers the most comprehensive record of the language and culture of the Kawaiisu people, a Native community of the southern Sierra Nevada and adjacent desert regions of California. Drawing on decades of collaboration with Kawaiisu speakers, Maurice L. Zigmond, Curtis G. Booth, and Pamela Munro present a rich and carefully documented study that combines ethnographic detail with linguistic analysis. The volume preserves traditional stories, vocabulary, and cultural practices, situating them within broader contexts of daily life and ceremonial traditions. By doing so, it safeguards knowledge that might otherwise be lost, while providing scholars and community members alike with an indispensable resource. Balancing technical rigor with accessibility, the book demonstrates the authors' commitment to recording and honoring Indigenous voices. Their approach highlights the interplay between language, cultural practice, and worldview, showing how the Kawaiisu have understood and narrated their environment over generations. This study not only advances research in linguistics, anthropology, and Native American studies but also contributes to cultural preservation and revitalization efforts. As such, Kawaiisu is both a scholarly achievement and a testament to the resilience of a people whose traditions continue to shape California's cultural landscape.

Biblical Greek Simplified
Jeremy Jackson discovered an easier way to learn Koine Greek. He noticed that other paths to learning Greek proved problematic as too much or too little was presented in the material. As well, many Greek manuals start at a place many students may not be ready for. The goal of BGS is to provide a strong foundation in the basics of Koine Greek. The student will learn how to translate simple Greek sentences and have a good understanding of how the Greek language works. Jeremy Rea Jackson (BBS Onesimus Bible College) has been studying Greek since 2009. He began teaching it in 2016 at Chino Prison and is still teaching today. He is a language enthusiast who has also studied Spanish, Esperanto, Latin, Hebrew, Russian, American Sign Language, and Japanese. His dream is to make Koine Greek affordable and available for everyone. He is also the author of The Real Comeback.

Introduction to Classical Nahuatl
For many years, J. Richard Andrews's Introduction to Classical Nahuatl has been the standard reference work for scholars and students of Nahuatl, the language used by the ancient Aztecs and the Nahua Indians of Central Mexico. Andrews's work was the first book to make Nahuatl accessible as a coherent language system and to recognize such crucial linguistic features as vowel length and the glottal stop. Accompanied by a workbook, this long-awaited new edition is extensively revised, enlarged, and updated with the latest research. The revised edition is guided by the same intentions as those behind the first. Andrews's approach is "anthropological," teaching us to understand Nahuatl according to its own distinctive grammar and to reject translationalist descriptions based on English or Spanish notions of grammar. In particular, Andrews emphasizes the nonexistence of words in Nahuatl (except for the few so-called particles) and stresses the nuclear clause as the basis for Nahuatl linguistic organization. Besides an increase in the number of chapters (from forty-eight to fifty-seven, including a more detailed treatment of place names), the new edition contains an innovative approach to personal names and the introduction of the square zero to indicate irregular morphological silence. The accompanying workbook provides exercises linked to the text, a key to the exercises, and an extensive vocabulary list.
Ch璽hk璽p璽s
Ch璽hk璽p璽s: A Naskapi Legend shares the story of Ch璽hk璽p璽s, a heroic figure in First Nations storytelling, who performs feats of strength and skill in spite of his diminutive size The book shares this traditional legend as originally recorded in the Naskapi community in northern Quebec in 1967 when it was narrated by John Peastitute, a Naskapi Elder and accomplished storyteller. Transcribed in the Naskapi language and syllabic orthography, the book offers a literary resource for the Naskapi language community, and the English translation enables those unfamiliar with the language, or the story, to discover this important legend. The book also contains extensive analysis of stories about Ch璽hk璽p璽s, notes about the provenance of the recordings, a biography of the storyteller, and a history of the Naskapi people. Lavish illustrations from Elizabeth Jancewicz--an artist raised in the Naskapi community--provide a sensitive and accurate graphical account of the legend, which has also been approved by Naskapi speakers themselves.

Zárate
The protagonist of the novel Z獺rate, Santos Z獺rate was a historical figure. A Venezuelan highwayman with a stronghold in the forest of G羹ere, he terrorized the valleys of Aragua for some twelve years. The action of the novel takes place in 1825, a few years after Venezuela had sealed its independence from Spain by defeating the Spanish forces at the Battle of Carabobo (June 24, 1821). At this time, General Francisco Jos矇 de Paula Santander was vice president of the Gran Colombia, the conglomerate of Colombia and Venezuela that had fought Spain for its freedom. General Jos矇 Antonio P獺ez governed the Venezuelan region, with his headquarters in Valencia. The entire nation readied itself to confront the great scourge of the times--the terrible and feared marauders that sowed apprehension and terror among the residents of the valleys of Aragua. There is in the novel the exaltation of an elite agrarian way of life, idyllic, edenic, that contrasts vividly with the violence of life in the llanos and, especially, with the activities of the highwaymen. Moreover, there is a delicate love story that develops pari passu with the official activities of the main protagonists. The development of the female characters may seem a bit quaint for today's tastes, though they are beautiful and carefully drawn. An irrepressible humor, at times subtle, pervades the entire novel.

Edgar J. Goodspeed, America's First Papyrologist
This is a study whose main sources are archival, principally Edgar J. Goodspeed's "Student Travel Letters" from 1899-1900. These letters home recount Goodspeed's daily and sometimes hourly activities during nearly two years abroad, in continental Europe, England, Egypt, and the Holy Land, in pursuit of scholarly seasoning. The book's focus is on his engagement with the newly emergent field of papyrology-the decipherment and study of the ancient Greek manuscripts then being discovered in Egypt. The letters allow for a tracking of this engagement in far greater depth than that allotted in his 1953 autobiography, As I Remember, or in his 90-page unpublished memoir, "Abroad in the Nineties," filling in some apparently intentional gaps, casting doubt on some of his later self-assessments but putting much additional substance to the claim that he was indeed "America's First Papyrologist." The result, part biography, part travelogue, part diary, part academic history, is a description of Goodspeed's progress, beginning with his enthusiastic commitment to the fledgling field in the late 1890s, ending with his abandonment of it in the early 1900s, possibly a result of his complicated dealings with Oxford papyrologist Bernard P. Grenfell in the fateful summer of 1900. Along the way the book introduces the reader to the world of papyrology in its early days, but it is mainly an account of one budding scholar's experiences in pursuit of recognition in that subject, a story that has its own complications, narrative arc, and human interest.

Choctaw Language and Culture combines a beginning language and grammar text with a selection of essays on Choctaw history, language, and culture from prehistoric times to the present. In part one of the book, "Chahta Anumpa," Marcia Haag, a linguist, and Henry Willis, a native speaker and Choctaw instructor, present the Choctaw language. Each chapter begins with a conversation or a Choctaw story. Designed for classroom use and to preserve the rich heritage of the Choctaw language, the lessons introduce new words, explain sentence construction and correct usage, and provide exercises in grammar and composition. Part two, "Kaniohmichi-hosh Okchayat Il-asha ("The Way We Live")," contains essays on Choctaw history and culture written especially for this volume by leading scholars in anthropology, history, linguistics, archaeology, and Native American studies. Beginning with "The Ancient Ones," the chapters describe Choctaw prehistory, daily life before contact, ritual and religion, trade, removal to Indian Territory, schools, newspapers, and contemporary life.
