The Dialect of Polish Spoken in Cruz Machado, Paran獺; A Portrait of a Language Apart
The Polish language was brought to Brazil by Polish-speaking peasants who came to the New World in the late 19th and early 20th century. Since then, the language has been developing in relative isolation from the European Polish context. In this monograph, the author focuses on a dialect of Polish still spoken in a remote community in the south of Brazil. The dialect's origins, history, and present character are investigated to portray the language as a result of a multilingual process with a specific starting point. On the basis of the original data recorded in the community, the author establishes a viable baseline for future in-depth studies of linguistic phenomena. She pays special attention to the distinct identity of the speakers, which mirrors the dialect's distinct character.
Thinking with an Accent
A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press's Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Everyone speaks with an accent, but what is an accent? Thinking with an Accent introduces accent as a powerfully coded yet underexplored mode of perception that includes looking, listening, acting, reading, and thinking. This volume convenes scholars of media, literature, education, law, language, and sound to theorize accent as an object of inquiry, an interdisciplinary method, and an embodied practice. Accent does more than just denote identity: from algorithmic bias and corporate pedagogy to migratory poetics and the politics of comparison, accent mediates global economies of discrimination and desire. Accents happen between bodies and media. They negotiate power and invite attunement. These essays invite the reader to think with an accent--to practice a dialogical and multimodal inquiry that can yield transformative modalities of knowledge, action, and care.

Adverbial Resumption in Verb Second Languages
While Verb-third (V3) patterns have long been studied in verb-second (V2) languages, a similar pattern in which an initial adverbial constituent is resumed by a clause-internal element has been much less studied. The latter is referred to as 'adverbial resumption' and it also has the character of being a V3 phenomenon. Therefore, the pattern is labelled 'adverbial V3 resumption' or 'adverbial V3.' The present volume is an up-to-date overview of the subject featuring case studies of individual languages that display certain patterns of V3. The authors discuss this pattern in relation to several different languages, addressing among other things issues of microvariation in contemporary varieties and diachronic variation. The book covers Medieval Romance, Old Italian, Old English, diachronic and synchronic varieties of German, varieties of Flemish and Dutch, Icelandic, varieties of Swedish, and Norwegian. Through analyses of adverbial resumptive V3 orders in Germanic and Romance, the contributors explore the nature of V2: while adverbial resumption only occurs in varieties that observe the V2 rule, in itself it leads to apparent violations of linear V2 order, namely to V3 orders. Adverbial Resumption in Verb Second Languages provides comparative analyses which touch upon the nature of sentence-external versus sentence-internal adjuncts, and the fine-grained architecture of the clausal functional hierarchy. These papers constitute a valuable contribution to the theoretically important topics of V2 and V3 that will be of interest to comparative linguists, Germanic linguistics, Romance linguists, and anyone working on formal grammar in general.

The Art of Teaching a Second Language
This book is primarily intended for language teachers, but it is also readily available for average language learners. In this book, it is argued that in contrast to the mechanistic perspective of many natural sciences, language and its acquisition must be perceived as an art. The science of language is about what language is, that is, its grammatical structure, the pronunciation system, and its semantic organization. The art of language, however, is about what language does, that is, its pragmatic function and how people use it to do things. The art of learning a second language is about the notion that learners are more than passive recipients of a phenomenon called learning a second language. Learners are engaged in a unique and dynamic learning experience, and they can actively participate in shaping and reshaping such experience. The learning feeds them and they also feed the language.

The Connection of Culture and Face and the Role of Intercultural Competence
Case Study from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,3, University of Kassel, language: English, abstract: Since globalisation leads us to interact more with people from all over the world, it is a logical consequence that we get in touch with an increasing number of people from different cultural backgrounds. Therefore, it is important to be aware that every person has their own concept of face, which refers to one's values, belief system and behaviour. Thus, it is of critical significance to analyse to what extent the different concepts of face of certain people differ in order to make clear why intercultural misunderstandings might appear. As culture is one of the most significant factors that have an impact on a person's concept of face, this term paper is going to deal with the connection of culture and face and will provide a comparison of the German and Japanese face concepts. Following this analysis, a model developed by Claudia Finkbeiner will be introduced to demonstrate how these cultural differences including one's concept of face might be overcome in order to ensure successful intercultural encounters.
A Student's Introduction to English Grammar
A new edition of a successful undergraduate textbook on contemporary international Standard English grammar, based on Huddleston and Pullum's earlier award-winning work, The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language (2002). The analyses defended there are outlined here more briefly, in an engagingly accessible and informal style. Errors of the older tradition of English grammar are noted and corrected, and the excesses of prescriptive usage manuals are firmly rebutted in specially highlighted notes that explain what older authorities have called 'incorrect' and show why those authorities are mistaken. Intended for students in colleges or universities who have little or no background in grammar or linguistics, this teaching resource contains numerous exercises and online resources suitable for any course on the structure of English in either linguistics or English departments. A thoroughly modern undergraduate textbook, rewritten in an easy-to-read conversational style with a minimum of technical and theoretical terminology.

Endgame by Samuel Beckett. Analysis in the Context of Pragmatics
Research Paper (undergraduate) in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 2022, language: English, abstract: The purpose of this research is to explore and analyse Samuel Beckett's ludicrous drama, Endgame, in the context of Pragmatics in general and violations of Conversational Principles in particular, as well as in the context of Pragmatics. Using Grice's idea of Conversational Principles, the study seeks to evaluate the selected conversational interactions in a formalised manner. Conversational theatre is characterised by the skillful use of language as a potent tool for communication; nevertheless, in Beckett's play, characters are concerned with various elements of language and its usage. The dialogues utilised in an absurd play are nonsensical exchanges in which there is no sense of cohesion between the characters. It opens up a wide range of possibilities for the study of many elements of language. It appears silly, yet it serves as a means of communication between the characters. The characters in this story frequently utilise broken words, make nonsensical comments, repeat themselves, and hesitate for no apparent reason, which is typical of the genre. His adept use of informal language and fragmented sentences exemplifies how language should be used in a natural setting.

Prepositional Mistakes in German L2 English Speakers
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2021 in the subject Didactics for the subject English - Grammar, Style, Working Technique, grade: 1,0, University of Freiburg, course: Introduction to Literary Studies, language: English, abstract: When doing an internship at a German secondary school, I realised English teachers are pointing out many errors to their students. Whether it is grammar, wrong use of a vocabulary word or their pronunciation, no matter their age or grade, the students are corrected whenever they say something wrong, but not once did I notice a teacher point out any prepositional mistakes to their students. But prepositional mistakes seem to be very common, I heard them in loads of sentences students tried to form on their own. As a result of this observation, I want to conduct in this study how many and what kind of prepositional mistakes are being made in the English language acquisition of German native speakers.

Teaching English to Young Arabic Speakers
The book explores young Arabic-speaking children's English language learning. Through classroom-based research and learner work samples, the book analyses the interplay between cultural norms and the critical role that teachers play in orchestrating classroom discourse through skillful use of available instructional materials, questioning strategies and feedback to learners. The author shows the potential of instructional materials to influence young learners' vocabulary, reading comprehension, and written production, as well as the way they acquire the academic literacies needed in school subjects taught in English. She reviews the spread of the practice of teaching English to young and very young children and the increasing demand for English-medium instruction in the Arabic-speaking region, with a particular focus on the negative transfer from Arabic to English spelling and grammar. The book also discusses the importance of story narratives, arguing they are an ideal medium for language teaching because of their rich linguistic repertoire and the strong motivational force that stories have on young language learners and their cognitive growth, essential to their later academic success. Taken together, the research findings and classroom vignettes suggest that children's language learning happens within a complex system of interactive variables and cultural norms and expectations.
