This is a scrapbook collection of facts and family lore about Leroy Carter. Included is information about his immediate descendants and his ancestors going back to the original Carter immigrant, James Cartar who arrived in the newly chartered Province of Pennsylvania in the early 1680s. William Carter of Wapping also arrived in 1682. The Carter family were not members of the Society of Friends. The family had been recruited for their blacksmithing skills. Many of the original immigrants to Bucks County, Pennsylvania came from Yorkshire, England. The Carters were people of grit and perseverance; they overcame obstacles to carve out a life in the wilderness. They crossed a continent on horseback and by walking along side wagons pulled by oxen. Carters established communities and commerce, sought fortunes, and lost much along the way but always remained a family.Chapters include: Acknowledgements, Dates, Quaker Documents, Introduction, James and Susannah Cartar, John and Alice Cartar, James and Hannah Carter, James 2nd and Sarah Jane Carter, Leroy and Mary Carter, Marion and Elmeda Carter. Three appendices augment the text. The first appendix contains Pennsylvania and Virginia document abstracts: Friends certificates of transfer (Hayhurst, Heaton, Wildman), births and burials, and marriage certificates, along with wills, indentures, and more spanning 1714 to 1841. In 1782, the General Assembly of Virginia enacted legislation to create revenue to operate the government, taxing land and some personal property. Copies of these lists were sent each year to the Auditor of Public Accounts in Richmond. In 1786, county courts divided the county into districts and appointed commissioners to collect the tax, which was assessed between March and April of each year and payable in December.The lists were organized in rough alphabetical order by the first letter of the surname of the owner of the land or town lot. Early records included quantity, value of the property, and tax owed in dollars and cents by 1810 instead of pounds, etc. In 1814 the distance and direction from the courthouse was also included. In 1820 a column was added to indicate the sum added due to buildings.This book is part of a series abstracting the Land Tax records of Loudoun County, Virginia, using microfilm of these records obtained from the Library of Virginia.

Rejected or Suspended Applications for Revolutionary War Pensions

Here is another wonderful source for genealogical research during the Revolutionary War. It is a United States Senate Document which lists the names and residences of about 11,000 Revolutionary War soldiers and/or their widows who applied for pensions and whose claims were rejected or suspended, along with the reasons. Most of the claims were for authentic service of actual Revolutionary soldiers but were rejected or suspended because the soldier did not serve for six months, his name did not appear on the rolls, or because a claim was suspended for further proof, such as proof of marriage. Still other claims were turned down on grounds of desertion, privateer service, or other service in a non-military category. The lists of suspended applications are arranged by states.
