A compilation of wills for residents of Giles County, Tennessee written during the years 1830 through 1857 can be found in these records, which are arranged alphabetically by surname. "The WPA Records are, for the most part, carbon copies of the original that was typed on onion skin paper during the Depression. Since these records were typed on poor machines by people who did not type well either or read by persons not always sure of the older handwritten material, the results are often less than perfect. ... Sometimes there are water stains and burned edges around the paper."

These documents provide land grants in Missouri during the years 1805-1812 for the territory purchased in the Louisiana Purchase, which lies north of Missouri and borders Canada. "Most of the area was settled by the French in the early 18th century and the other end the Spanish from the 16th century, therefore many of the names are French or Spanish in origin with about as many English names and the other two." Marriage Notices from the Southern Christian Advocate, 1867-1878
The Southern Christian Advocate was the publication for the Methodist Conferences of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, for the period covered in this volume. It was published in Macon, Georgia, through the issue of May 28, 1878. After a brief hiatus the Southern Christian Advocate was re-established in Columbia, South Carolina, as the publication for the South Carolina Conference. Publication continued in Macon for the Georgia and Florida Conferences, but the title of the newspaper was changed to the Wesleyan Christian Advocate with the issue of June 4, 1878. Marriage notices are included which appeared in the four June 1878 issues of the Wesleyan Christian Advocate, since the South Carolina ministers appear to have been still sending in marriage notices to be published and because these issues are available on the same roll of microfilm.The marriage notices which were published in the Southern Christian Advocate are largely from South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, but there are a significant number of marriage notices from North Carolina and Alabama with a few notices from other states as well. All of the marriage notices are of interest, as a marriage notice might name a parent or another relative of the bride which would not appear on a marriage license. Additionally, there have been relatively few marriage records published for the period covered in this volume. It is not unusual to find notices of couples for which the bride and groom were residents of different counties, especially in Georgia. Since South Carolina did not require marriage licenses until 1911, the notices of South Carolina marriages are very valuable. North Carolina's marriage license law did not take effect until 1868. Therefore, the North Carolina marriage notices are of value as well. A full-name index completes this work.

The Life and Times of Rev. Samuel Patton, D. D., and Annals of Holston Conference
The Reverend Samuel Patton was admitted into the Tennessee Conference in 1819. When Holston Conference was formed in 1824, he became a part of that area. He was assigned Sequatchie Valley as his first appointment in 1819 and thus began his ministry years until his death in 1854. Truly one of the first histories of the Holston Conference, listing his appointments from 1824 to 1854. The Irish born Doctor Samuel Patton was born in Lancaster District of South Carolina in 1797. His grandfather John Patton is from Pennsylvania with John's wife being a descendent of a Scots Seceder named Nichols. An appendix (Annals of the Holston Conference, from 1824 to 1853) and an index to full-names, places and subjects add to the value of this work.

This is the sixth and final volume of the records of the Texas Rangers from 1847 until 1900 in an alphabetical listing. Included in Volume Six are the Frontier Battalion and Companies; Minute Men and Companies, County Minute Men and Commanding Officers; County Frontier Battalions and Commanding Officers and Miscellaneous units as well as the Texas Rangers with surnames from T to Z. Outward Spirals
For more than two thousand years, the veneration of sacred fossil ammonites, called Shaligrams, has been an integral part of ritual practice throughout South Asia. Originating from a single remote region of Himalayan Nepal, in the Kali Gandaki River Valley of Mustang, ritual use of these stones today has become a significant aspect of pilgrimage and worship in both India and Nepal, and among the global Hindu and Buddhist Diasporas. Considered inherently sacred not only because they are not man-made but because the workings of the landscape have imbued them with a living essence and agency of their own, Shaligrams require no rites of invocation when brought into homes or temples as presiding deities. But Shaligram interpretive traditions also use the specific characteristics of each ammonite fossil to determine which gods and spirits have become physically manifest within the stone. This book therefore details the process of reading deities within these sacred fossils and offers a general guide to identifying each of the 90+ name-types of Shaligrams, along with their defining features and concise histories.While Outward Spirals covers several of the Hindu, Buddhist, and Bon (shamanic) traditions of Shaligram reading and offers a stone-by-stone guide for deciphering the manifest deities represented in Shaligram practice, it is the result of over a decade of ethnographic fieldwork. This book therefore also contains discussions of Shaligrams as they are described in religious texts and a list of typical puja rituals used in Shaligram care. The impetus to complete this book, however, actually comes from the Shaligram practitioners the author has worked with in India, Nepal, the United States, Australia, and the UK. For them, this work represents a giving back. Since most Himalayan interpretive traditions are oral traditions, this is the first book to record Shaligram heritage for public distribution, adding new dimensions for understanding ammonites and other fossil collections cross-culturally.

Bledsoe was the first county to be formed in Sequatchie Valley, Tennessee in 1807, just two years after the Cherokee Indians ceded a large portion of the valley to the United States government. Marriage and Death Notices from the Genius of Liberty, 1817-1843
The weekly newspaper, Genius of Liberty was published in Leesburg, Virginia, between January 1817 and May 1843. From its beginning, brief announcements of marriage and death were included. These notices were extracted and published as a Special Edition of Northern Virginia Genealogy in 2005. Entries herein are arranged by volume and publication date. The style of the entries is not consistent. Marriage entries include the names of the groom and bride, the date, and the name of the officiant; some entries include additional information such as place of residence, name of parent, and/or other related data. Death entries include the name of the deceased and date of death; some entries include additional information such as age, place of residence, name of parent, cause of death, and/or other related data. Leesburg residents were more likely to be mentioned in the Genius of Liberty, but "there are notices from as far away as Warren County, Virginia, and New York." A full-name index adds to the value of this work.

Follow the Trail, Win the West
Legends shape what we think about how the West was won, and so many movies, along with subsequent media portrayals, tend to solidify those legends in our minds. The West was won by cowboys battling Indians, by John Wayne heroes saving helpless wagon trains, or lone mountain men braving the wilds. It's hard to imagine growing up in the United States without having these powerful images dominating our concepts of western expansion. Follow the Trail, Win the West does not deny these images. Cowboys did fight Indians, heroes may well have saved wagon trains, and courageous mountain men deserved legendary status, but they were far from the dominant forces. The men, women, and children who suffered the hardships of walking west with those wagon trains really led to the winning of the west and settling it. They headed west from the Missouri River along the Mormon Trail and other trails, facing the dangers of trail life, harsh weather, and Native American resisters who were defending the land they had lived on and roamed for centuries. Many of the settlers came from the East in hopes of starting new lives, and many accomplished what they set out to do. Follow the Trail, Win the West follows Allen Miner, Jr., a young Easterner with a remarkable history, even before leaving home and family at the age of sixteen in search of his own new life. As Allen's new life takes shape and expands, many other characters-family, friends, those who helped him along the way, Native Americans, former slaves, enemies-become part of an increasingly complex story. Just keeping track of the characters as they are introduced and developed may challenge the reader. Many of those whom Allen met, influenced, and was influenced by, were involved in various anti-slavery activities including anti-slavery societies, the underground Railroad, and several freed slave communities. The effect of political questions surrounding slavery, both local and national, on western expansion is one of the main themes of the book. Slavery controversies and the related federal government Land Act of 1820 were critical. I'll leave it at that, and let readers wade through the connections. Many may see parallels with our twenty-first century antagonisms.

A Personal Look at the Civil War in Rhea and Meigs Counties, Tennessee
This work examines the lives of Rhea and Meigs Counties, Tennessee women and children during the Civil War. Several newspaper articles from The Athens Post are included, detailing county meetings and other significant events, as well as a collection of letters and diaries written by families of soldiers. An index to full-names, places and subjects adds to the value of this work.Rhea and Meigs Counties in lower east Tennessee were at one time all one county, even though the Tennessee River ran between the two halves. The people in both are closely related and families share both sides of the river. This collection of V. C. Allen's newspaper clippings about various events and persons in the Confederacy were collected first-hand by his own experience during the conflict. Included here are the rosters of the various units from these two counties and biographical sketches of many of the leaders of the units.Examples from this volume: Rev. G. W. Callahan entered the army as a private in Captain Darwin's company. He was a Methodist minister, belonging to the Holston Conference. He was a man of ability, and was appointed Chaplain of the Sixteenth Tennessee Battalion on the Staff of Colonel John R. Neal, and made an efficient officer, commanding the respect of the battalion, and was known as 'a fighting parson.'Rev. Callahan is still living [1908], and a minister of the Western North Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.
