Why We Talk Funny
A fun, smart and surprising dive into the past, present and future of accents - and the enduring power of sounding different Accents have long held our fascination. As far back as the 7th century BCE, Egyptian pharaohs experimented with babies to test out theories about the "original" accent and the Old Testament relays how a small difference in the pronunciation of "s" became a fatal litmus test of tribal belonging. Still today, from dinner parties to job interviews, you'll find people kicking up dust about things like where and how to pronounce a 't, ' as in, never in "often," but with proper British poshness, as in "t(y)une." In Why We Talk Funny, linguist Valerie Fridland unlocks the secrets of what linguistic science, psychology and history can tell us about the evolution of human speech, why accents develop, and how they shape our professional and social lives. With a healthy dose of her signature humor and captivating anecdotes, Fridland explores how the twin forces of physiology and psychology along with the need to fit in changes the trajectory of speech over languages and lifetimes, diving deep into the history and social forces driving the way people talk. Along the way, she emphasizes that accents don't always set us apart, they can also bring us together. Whether it's the accent that hints at your hometown, your group, your social status or your ethnicity, the sounds we say reveal a lot about who we are and where we've been - even for those who might think they have no accent at all. The story of language is the story of humanity, and as Fridland reminds us, the funny sounds we make - whether from the mouths of ancient ancestors or the tongues of screenbound teens - all come from the same powerful desire to communicate and belong. Why We Talk Funny will change the way you think about your own accent - and transform the way you listen to the sounds of others.

Monsters in the Archives
A fascinating, first-of-its-kind exploration of Stephen King and his most iconic early books, based on groundbreaking research and interviews with King--all conducted by the first scholar to be given extended access to his private archives "A treat for fans of Stephen King."--Paul Tremblay"A master class in craft--and a peek behind the curtain."--Stephen Graham Jones"Illuminating and original."--Amy Tan"It will be treasured by admirers of King's novels and is a must read for anyone curious about how great books get written."--James Shapiro, Professor of English, Columbia University A LIT HUB MOST ANTICIPATED BOOK OF THE YEAR After Caroline Bicks was named the University of Maineʼs inaugural Stephen E. King Chair in Literature, she became the first scholar to be granted extended access by King to his private archives, a treasure trove of manuscripts that document the legendary writerʼs creative process--most of them never before studied or published. The year she spent exploring King's early drafts and hand-written revisions was guided by one question millions of Kingʼs enthralled and terrified readers (including her) have asked themselves: What makes Stephen King's writing stick in our heads and haunt us long after we've closed the book? Bicks focuses on five of his most iconic early works--The Shining, Carrie, Pet Sematary, ʼSalemʼs Lot, and Night Shift--to reveal how he crafted his language, story lines, and characters to cast his enduring literary spells. While tracking King's margin notes and editorial changes, she discovered scenes and alternative endings that never made it to print but that King is allowing her to publish now. The book also includes interviews Bicks had with King along the way that reveal new insights into his writing process and personal history. Part literary master class, part biography, part memoir and investigation into our deepest anxieties, Monsters in the Archives--authorized by Stephen King himself--is unlike anything ever published about the master of horror. It chronicles what Bicks found when she set out to unearth how King crafted some of his scariest, most iconic moments. But it's also a story about a grown-up English professor facing her childhood fears and getting to know the man whose monsters helped unleash them.

Retour Interpreting
This book is a vital addition to the interpreting field, focusing on retour interpreting--interpreting from one's native language (A) into a second language (B). This practice, once viewed as secondary, has become indispensable in today's multilingual and multicultural contexts. As interpreters increasingly handle diverse language pairs and rising standards for bilingual communication, retour interpreting plays a critical role in bridging linguistic gaps. This book features contributions from leading experts who explore retour interpreting from theoretical, pedagogical, and practical perspectives. It examines the linguistic and cognitive challenges unique to interpreting into a non-native language, while also addressing the complex factors influencing effective B-language output. By highlighting the growing need for skilled retour interpreters, especially in multilingual institutions and post-colonial settings where former colonial languages often dominate, this book aligns itself with current professional demands. With eleven chapters, the book provides comprehensive insights into retour interpreting across different languages, contexts, and career stages. It is an essential resource for interpreters, trainers, and researchers, offering practical strategies and critical perspectives. Introduction to Linguistics
This language is the subject matter of linguistics. The first step in scientifically discussing this language is to collect data about it and record it. Data are collected from spoken and written languages as needed, although modern linguistics tends to favor spoken language.A trained linguist can collect information about spoken language by listening to it and using memory; in most cases, that information is recorded using a special type of International Phonetic Alphabet created according to linguistic methods, and it is very easy to record on tape. Written records in that language-such as ancient manuscripts, inscriptions, old books, and statues-are used to discuss ancient languages. Information about different aspects of language, such as sound patterns and pronunciation processes, is collected with the help of devices like the kymograph, artificial palate, and X-ray photography. In this way, in the second phase of linguistics, information on various aspects of the language is collected, given a proper description, and analyzed.

Variation in non-verbal negation in Ammani Arabic
The work makes available evidence that the alternation between [mu] and [muʃ] forms in Ammani Arabic grammar is socially conditioned. The most significant social factor is found to be gender (with a range value of 0.66). In this work, the variant [mu] is assumed to be a sign of femininity; therefore, it is more preferred by females than males. Age is found to be the second significant social factor (with a range value of 0.43). This can come down to the assumption that young speakers do prefer less complex forms, hence the use of [mu] over [muʃ]. Education is also found to be significant (with a range value of 0.26). According to Al Wer (2013), education widens the individual's social networks and mobility, so he/she becomes aware of the most prestigious forms used in his/her community. Finally, region is also found to be significant (with a range value of 0.17). West Amman speakers prefer [muʃ] in contrast to East Amman, who prefer [mu].

Action and Reaction
A wide-ranging, interdisciplinary conceptual history of the changing meanings and metaphors of "action" and "reaction" What is meant by reactionary politics? What do biologists mean when they speak of the interaction between life and its surroundings? Why was the term "abreaction" invented and later abandoned by the first generation of psychoanalysts? These are but a few of the questions the internationally renowned scholar Jean Starobinski answers in his latest work on the conceptual history of the words "action" and "reaction." Not just a history of ideas, Action and Reaction is also a semantic and philological history, a literary history, a history of medicine, and a history of the biological sciences. Concentrating especially on the moment when scientific language and ordinary language diverge, the author offers a genealogy of the human and natural sciences through their usage of the metaphors action and reaction. Newton's theorem "to every action an equal action is always opposed," stands as a point of departure for Starobinski's exploration of the lexical and metaphorical traces this proposition left in its wake. With stunning clarity, the author analyzes the scientific, literary, and political effects of the terms action / reaction in describing and explaining the material universe, the living body, the events of history, and psychological behavior. Ultimately, the book explores the power and danger of metaphorical language and questions the convergence and collapse of scientific and moral explanations of the universe.

The Deorhord
An entertaining tour of Old English words for animals, from the author of The Wordhord: Daily Life in Old English Many of the animals we encounter in everyday life, from pets and farm animals to the wild creatures of field and forest, have remained the same since medieval times. But the words used to name and describe them have often changed beyond recognition, starting with the Old English word for "animal" itself, deor (pronounced DAY-or). In The Deorhord, Hana Videen presents a glittering Old English bestiary of animals real and imaginary, big and small, ordinary and extraordinary--the good, the bad, and the downright baffling. From gange-w疆fran or walker-weavers (spiders) and hasu-padan or grey-cloaked ones (eagles) to heafdu swelce mona or moon-heads (historians still don't know!), The Deorhord introduces a world both familiar and strange: where ants could be monsters and panthers could be your friends, where dog-headed men were as real as elephants, and where whales were as sneaky as wolves. The curious stories behind these words provide vivid insights into the language, literature, and lives of those who spoke Old English--the language of Beowulf--more than a thousand years ago. A delightful journey through the weird and wonderful world of Old English, The Deorhord is a magical menagerie of new creatures and new words for the modern englisc reader to discover.
Teacher Emotions as Personal and Professional Development in Applied Linguistics
Previously, most studies in this area have focused on the reciprocal effects of language teachers' emotions, identity, well-being and agency, with emotions often being portrayed as consequential entities. However, this book advances the field by exploring specifically how language teacher emotions can be used as tools for personal and professional development. The authors provide empirical, theoretical, conceptual and practical contributions which demonstrate how emotional responses provide data that can be analyzed and reflected upon and how emotions can be seen not as occurrences that are suffered, but as actions, judgments, choices, responsibilities and data that can be used to improve personal growth and professional lives. The chapters shed light on the potential of emotions as tools for teachers' personal and professional development, such as, but not limited to, emotional literacy, emotional intelligence, emotional agility and regulation, emotional memory and self-exploratory and self-reflective inquiries.

Military Leader and Effective Rhetorical Skills
This research focuses on how military leaders can improve leadership thru effective rhetorical skills. The research provides a greater understanding of the importance of rhetoric and provides military leaders with methods to implement rhetorical skills and strategies to improve leadership qualities. Through extensive review of both military and civilian literature on rhetoric and leadership, the author addresses the importance of why military leaders should develop effective rhetorical skills and what constitutes effective rhetorical skills. The Adapted HPT Model for Reaching Desired Rhetorical Skills provides the foundation to understand the gap between the actual and desired rhetorical skills, the causes of the gap, and solutions to reduce the gap. The Military Rhetorical Skills Model allows a methodical application of the desired rhetorical skills to demonstrate how General MacArthur effectively used rhetorical skills and created rhetorical eloquence in his farewell address at West Point in 1962. Military leaders, charged with responsibility to lead others in demanding situations and to defend the ideals of our Constitution, require a wide range of skills to protect the promises made by donning the military uniform. Developing effective rhetorical skills is an important element of achieving excellence in practicing the art and science of military leadership. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
