Janus
This theory attempts to be a roadmap to a comprehension of human consciousness through Cartesian dualism. Although it accepts the Western principle of 'objective reality' in order to 'explain', this theory does not ignore the intersubjective connectivity of the human mind, or the value of Eastern philosophy as a dynamic, holistic, analysis. This theory provides a clear taxonomy sentience/cognition as layers of human consciousness on the historical grounds of the acquisition of language. The layers are intertwined but discrete. There is no evolutionary continuum between the basic cognition that exists in other animal species and human cognition. The point of inflection is the acquisition of language, which resulted in complex (human) cognition. Without productive language there can be no complex thought.Experience (i.e., sentience), on the other hand, is a fundamental, biological, phenomenon that is subjective by nature. Sentience, as a quantum system, basically appears to be a process; the dynamics of the process are incomplete without perception (the famous tree that falls in the forest). If there is no afference, there is no experience. In a process that took tens of thousands of years, hominins commenced to develop language and eventually branched out into H. sapiens. The process involved: 1) the human creation of productive, recursive, language; 2) human language resulted in a new species, H. sapiens. It was a story of mutual creation.Through language feedback, human cognition grew beyond normal evolutionary laws. Human consciousness-a 'black swan' event-is meta-evolutionary. Had cognition been solely natural, biological transmission would be something akin to drafting a plant. The individual cognitions of both parents would be mixed in some sort of breeding broth and a new cognition would grow from it.Extremely immature, human offspring enjoy all senses but are not fully cognitive. The way things are, human mothers need to talk to their babies. The process, which often involves the whole family group, takes at least a couple of years. There is no universal language template in the human brain. Language needs to be taught. Had there been a template, individuals would instinctively comprehend language. But language is cultural and artificial. While individuals of other animal species, especially non-gregarious ones, are basically iterations of their species, humans have become true individuals. One way to prove the process in ourselves is to test how far back our episodic memories go. We will find that we registered our first memories-and probably our identity-when we were between three and four years of age, not before speech comprehension.
Hungarian-English Linguistic Contrasts
There is no denying that linguistic contrasts between languages can have an impact on the learning of foreign languages, and there is no doubt that an awareness of the differences between the mother tongue (L1) and the foreign or second language being learnt (L2) can help learners to acquire the L2. The aim of this book is to acquaint Hungarian students of English with some of the linguistic contrasts between English and Hungarian that may affect their own and their future students' learning of English. The author, P獺l Heltai, provides a summary of the most important principles and concepts proposed by classical contrastive analysis, highlighting those that have retained their relevance for foreign language teaching over the years and presents an overview of the most important contrasts between English and Hungarian at the level of- phonetics, syntax, lexicology, pragmatics and translation. Most chapters consist of a theoretical introduction complemented by illustrative texts with example sentences and translations. The book provides a good opportunity for students to recapitulate or supplement some of the material covered earlier in their linguistics courses at university and shows the relevance of these disciplines to foreign language learning, teaching and translation. This is the revised version of the previous book, supplemented by suggested solutions to the exercises. This edition is also available online.

The Laboratory of Friendship
Discover the untold story of America's most transformative intellectual partnership-a friendship that became a laboratory for ethical courage, ecological insight, and democratic dissent. In The Laboratory of Friendship: Emerson, Thoreau, and the Making of American Philosophy, Allen Schery reconstructs Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau's relationship as a dynamic collaboration where visionary ideas met empirical rigor. Drawing on extensive archival research, Schery reveals how these thinkers tested, refined, and grounded their work in Concord's woods, waterways, and lecture halls-producing not only Walden and "Civil Disobedience" but an entire methodology for pairing moral courage with disciplined attention to nature.Thoreau's bold annotations in Emerson's Nature manuscript sharpened Emerson's language into explicit calls for social justice, while Emerson's lectures incorporated Thoreau's precise river surveys and phenological observations, transforming data into moral exhortation. Schery shows that true dissent requires both expansive imagination and painstaking care-trusting one's deepest convictions while counting tree rings, measuring river depths, and calculating the real cost of simple living.Through seventeen richly illustrated chapters, readers encounter detailed case studies: Emerson's evolving lexicon of Over-Soul, transparency, and self-reliance; Thoreau's seasonal calendars tracking flowering dates for seventy-two native plant species; their joint editorial labor on The Dial amid financial hardship; and the publication histories of Walden and "Civil Disobedience," which expose the economic and logistical challenges they faced.Four practical appendices empower readers to become experimenters themselves.

Everyday sentences in spoken English, in phonetic transcription with intonation marks (For the use of Foreign Students)
Everyday speech, finely notated. Master natural rhythm and stress. Harold E. Palmer's Everyday Sentences sets out spoken English sentences in phonetic transcription with intonation marks, a compact English conversation collection that functions as both an English phrasebook for learners and a phonetic transcription guide. Its sentence-by-sentence approach turns abstract intonation patterns of English into visible shapes, perfect for sustained English pronunciation practice and practical English speaking in everyday situations. Originally prepared to help foreign students learning English, the material remains strikingly direct and useful - an esl classroom resource and a quiet companion for solo study. Its economy is deceptive: plain lines reveal cadence, weak forms and the connected speech that modern learners often miss; each example invites careful listening, imitation and measured repetition. First published in the early 20th century, the work stands as a document of early 20th century English pedagogy and of British English learning more broadly; it illustrates the Harold E. Palmer methods that emphasised oral accuracy and close attention to intonation. Reading it is like listening to a patient teacher at your shoulder: instruction pared to essentials, where a single sentence becomes a small, repeatable lesson. Teachers will find immediate, adaptable material for drills and listening exercises, while casual readers will enjoy the book's clarity of purpose; classic-literature collectors and historians of education will prize the edition as a faithful witness to teaching practice in a formative era. The language is practical rather than ornate, and its modesty is precisely its strength: everyday utterances made teachable. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure. Practical and archival in equal measure, this edition invites daily use and careful study. Whether you seek practical English speaking drills, targeted english pronunciation practice or a specimen of early 20th century English teaching for a personal shelf, readers and collectors will find a quietly rewarding resource.

An English grammar; methodical, analytical, and historical. With a treatise on the orthography, prosody, inflections and syntax of the English tongue; and numerous authorities cited in order of histor
An English Grammar, methodical, analytical, and historical (Volume I) by Adolf Ferdinand Maetzner approaches the English tongue with forensic clarity and humane intelligence. A rigorous map of English. Built as both an English grammar reference and an analytical grammar guide, the volume unites a treatise on orthography and prosody with systematic treatment of grammar inflections and syntax, and cites numerous authorities in order of historical development. Maetzner's method places usage beside lineage: spelling and sound change are weighed alongside morphological patterns and syntactic habit, producing an account of English language development that is as explanatory as it is evidential. Readers encounter patient argumentation, recurring comparative grammar studies, and a structure that supports reference use without sacrificing historical context. The tone is exacting but lucid: advanced language learners find depth and direction, while teachers and linguists gain a dependable historical grammar study suited to research and classroom explanation. For those teaching or studying philology, the book offers a form of organised evidence - a chain of sources and reasoning that rewards repeated consultation and careful comparison. Composed in the nineteenth century and speaking from the centre of Victorian-era linguistics, this volume occupies a distinctive place in the story of grammatical thought. It records the methods of a pivotal scholarly moment and supplies a rigorous framework for assessing how rules emerge and persist; comparative grammar studies benefit from its chronological citation of authorities, and anyone tracing English language development will find sharp, source-led argument. Casual readers curious about language encounter readable, evidence-led prose; collectors and libraries specialising in classic grammar collections prize its restored presence. Its argumentation and accessible structure make the book as useful to targeted reference queries as to sustained historical reading. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure.

The author arranges numerous authorities in order of historical development, using comparative examples to map patterns of change and to illuminate strands of English language development that remain relevant to readers and scholars. Rooted in nineteenth century linguistics and attuned to the idioms of Victorian era English, the work functions as an academic linguistics resource while remaining readable to an interested general reader. Its prose privileges clarity over ornament: technical points are supported by evidence rather than assertion, and careful exposition makes complex forms accessible. The book suits classroom and private study alike; useful to students and tutors within a university English curriculum, valuable to researchers of comparative grammar studies, and compelling as a classic grammar compendium for collectors. Its significance is twofold: as a document of scholarly method in its time and as a durable reference that deepens understanding of the English tongue. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. Elegant in argument and exact in detail, this edition speaks to lovers of language and to libraries that curate Victorian-era scholarship. Casual readers with an appetite for the roots of modern usage find lucid pathways; collectors of nineteenth century linguistics and classic grammar compendia recognise its value as a cultural treasure and a distinguished addition to any study. Its authority endures across generations and invites study.

The dialect of the English gypsies (Second Edition)
A meticulous, humane record of a vanishing tongue. Language lives at the margins. C. Smart's Second Edition gathers attentive observations of the speech recorded among English Gypsies in nineteenth-century England, the result of Victorian language research that balances precision with human interest. Written with an eye to comparison, the volume sits at the intersection of English dialect studies and Romani language reference, offering careful lexical notes and contextual commentary that reward both casual curiosity and scholarly enquiry. The prose is economical and evidence-led; the book's pragmatic methodology anticipates later fieldwork without sacrificing readability. As a linguistic anthropology book and a language history resource, Smart's study speaks directly to those tracing gypsy language origins and to researchers of minority languages in Britain. It preserves voices often absent from mainstream archives and supplies material for comparative linguistics guide and analysis without dense jargon. The work illuminates facets of British Romani culture, records social usage, and exposes the methodological assumptions of its era, making it of real interest to historical language enthusiasts and a welcome addition to any academic linguistics collection. Its empirical observations and comparative remarks still provide useful source material across disciplines - from folklore and philology to modern sociolinguistics - and make the text adaptable for both classroom discussion and solitary reading. Paradise Revisited
A brilliant, eminently readable and (sometimes riotously) entertaining mythic comparison of the Garden of the Eden story from Genesis, as told by John Milton in his classic Paradise Lost and the Navajo creation story of the evolution of humankind through five worlds. Both narratives end with the arrival of humankind on earth as we are now. Dr. Paul Zolbrod, who for decades taught English literature at Allegheny College, went on to compile Navajo mythology while teaching at Dine College on the Navajo reservation. His book, Din矇 Bahane': The Navajo Creation Story has now been in print for more than 35 years. Paradise Revisited, which marries these two spectacularly similar and wildly dissimilar myths, is a book only Dr. Zolbrod has the knowledge and experience to have written. 532 pages with 147 illustrations, most color, and historical photos. With dozens of sidebars containing historical notes, explaining archetypal symbols, and illuminating sacred elements from mountains and medicine wheels to the ancient tree goddesses and sacred serpents that would find their way into burgeoning religions in reversed symbolism. With mythological notes on broader creation mythemes arising worldwide and a short biography of Paul Zolbrod, who died in 2025 while the book was in production. This book was his last quest, and he fulfilled it in the most spectacular possible fashion. This work of represents a collaboration of more than 250 painters, weavers, dancers, photographers, sandpainting artists, galleries, museums, scholars, mythologists, symbolists, editors, and university and Library of Congress research librarians.

Symese - Universal Symbolic Script
Is it possible to express ourselves with symbols independent of their sounds in spoken language? To denote basic concepts using a reasonably small set of symbols, with a pictographic link to what each represents, that can be augmented or compounded to represent more complex concepts? To capture the poetry of words in the sound of silence? Yes, it is!This book presents an outline blueprint for Symese, a universal symbolic script that is simple but not simplistic, with an elegance and coherence lacking in modern pictographic-rooted scripts. Symese is a writing system whose semiotics turns traditional alphabet-based linguistics on its head.My quest has been inspired by how the Chinese script bridges many spoken dialects and appear even in other languages like Korean and Japanese. Notwithstanding syntactical and semantic differences in the use of Chinese characters across dialects and languages, can we achieve today on a global scale what ancient civilisations did at a local level? Yes, we can!
