Military Leader and Effective Rhetorical Skills
This research focuses on how military leaders can improve leadership thru effective rhetorical skills. The research provides a greater understanding of the importance of rhetoric and provides military leaders with methods to implement rhetorical skills and strategies to improve leadership qualities. Through extensive review of both military and civilian literature on rhetoric and leadership, the author addresses the importance of why military leaders should develop effective rhetorical skills and what constitutes effective rhetorical skills. The Adapted HPT Model for Reaching Desired Rhetorical Skills provides the foundation to understand the gap between the actual and desired rhetorical skills, the causes of the gap, and solutions to reduce the gap. The Military Rhetorical Skills Model allows a methodical application of the desired rhetorical skills to demonstrate how General MacArthur effectively used rhetorical skills and created rhetorical eloquence in his farewell address at West Point in 1962. Military leaders, charged with responsibility to lead others in demanding situations and to defend the ideals of our Constitution, require a wide range of skills to protect the promises made by donning the military uniform. Developing effective rhetorical skills is an important element of achieving excellence in practicing the art and science of military leadership. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Understanding the English Complementizers
English complementizers play an important role in clausal construction. It is widely considered that the complementizers such as for, if, that, and whether can be used to introduce embedded clauses. How can we identify their syntactic roles that exert impact on variant patterns? Why does our understanding of such complementizers help us improve the quality of translation into Spanish? The present research provides a crosslinguistic analysis of English complementizers and their corresponding Spanish counterparts. The study adopts a qualitative approach along with an extensive review of specific theories developed in previous empirical studies. The exploration of syntactic structures regarding the order of sentential components provides an insight into the English and Spanish complementizer constructions. Firstly, teachers need to gain profound knowledge of syntax in order to foster an effective development of language learning and teaching. Secondly, it is necessary for translators to comprehend linguistic structures so as to parse sentences and produce accurate output with respect to sentential interpretation and translation. Thus, the comprehension of certain constructions in which such complementizers are involved is supposed to improve the quality of English and Spanish translation, as well as to enhance machine translation.

Language Ideologies and L2 Speaker Legitimacy
This book examines dilemmas faced by second language (L2) Japanese speakers as a result of persistent challenges to their legitimacy as speakers of Japanese. Based on an ethnographic interview study with L2-Japanese speakers and their L1-Japanese-speaking friends, co-workers and significant others, the book examines ideologies linked to three core speech styles of Japanese - keigo or polite language, gendered language and regional dialects - to show how such ideologies impact L2-Japanese speakers. The author demonstrates that speaker legitimacy is often tenuous for L2 speakers and argues that, despite increasing numbers of Japanese-speaking foreign residents in Japan, native speaker bias remains a persistent issue for L2-Japanese speakers living and working in Japan. This book extends the discussion of native speaker bias beyond educational contexts, and in the process reveals tensions between how L2 speakers aspire to speak and how L1 speakers expect them to speak.

Metagrammar
This book highlights the grammatical structure of thought and behavior as a blueprint for scientific discovery and innovation. It defines the new concept of metagrammar as the unnoticed transfer of linguistic functions and skills to and from our interaction with the world. Viewing grammar as language engineering, the author argues that metagrammar charts a new mode of reasoning central to critical thinking, problem solving and goal setting in all areas of human endeavor. He shows how metagrammatical structures and genres mediate in the conceptualization of phenomena, as well as in the production of plans, policies, systems and designs. This uniquely human capability is contrasted with mechanistic models in computers and AI that threaten to replace human agency and decision making. This book will be of interest to the educated reader who wants to keep abreast of transformational research in language and cognition as it applies to self and society, current events, digital media and emerging technologies, from artificial intelligence to autonomous systems, from a human-centered perspective. It will be particularly relevant to organizations such as the Modern Languages Association, for its focus on linguistic and narrative theory, cultural studies and critical theory.

Community Interpreting in Cameroon
Cameroon by virtue of its colonial past, has embraced several exogenous cultures, civilizations and languages. This has no doubt left an indelible mark on the linguistic landscape of the country. From the Carthaginians, Greeks, Portuguese through the Germans to the French and English, the linguistic landscape of Cameroon could not remain the same and the impact can still be felt today. One of the most obvious consequences of these contacts is that English and French have remained vital communication mediums in the country. The introduction of these exogenous languages into an already extremely diverse linguistic repertoire entailed and still entails the use of middle men (referred to as interpreters) for effective communication. As it stands, there is no Cameroonian who can boast of being cleared of any linguistic challenges in a country where 70% of the citizens are rural and do not master the languages used in public domains. Access to public utility such as health care services is a considerable challenge which can only be overcome with the help of interpreters.
Soundings and the Politics of Sociolinguistic Listening for Transnational Space
In a world dominated by the visual, this book presents how a focus on the sounded experience and acts of listening may carve a way to reformulate emerging publics, create space for critical multilingual engagement and deepen recognition of emancipatory practices. Examining the emerging logics and rhythms among a group of post-EU accession UK Polish migrants, this book focuses on the semiotic processes through which contemporary moving bodies and communities place themselves in sociolinguistic landscapes. It considers how they develop metrics to account for sociolinguistic change and authenticate their projects and practices in transnational timespace. In doing so, the book brings power differentials to the centre of language and objectivity debates and foregrounds material semiotics as an approach that enables a new collective potential and redefinition of sociolinguistic listening. By connecting research on scale in migration contexts with studies of embodied soundwork and of stance in semiotics, this book highlights how a focus on the sounded sign may bring us closer to the ways in which bodies and meanings are (re)made, and collective doing and thinking are formed in the globalised world.

The Reinvention of the U.S. Academic Library
Focusing on U.S. academic libraries, The Reinvention of the U.S. Academic Library begins by providing a concise history of the traditional role and function of academic libraries from their earliest times up to the dawn of the Digital Age and the spread of digital technology into all aspects of academic research and scholarly communication. This introduction is followed by chapters analyzing how digital technology has transformed, over the course of a few swift decades, not only the role and function of academic libraries, but also the nature of scholarly communication itself. Specifically, The Reinvention of the U.S. Academic Library will consider how digital technology has changed the way academic libraries: - Acquire and exercise bibliographic control over collections. - Provide equitable access to information. Allocate and utilize library space. Instruct and guide students, faculty, and others. - Relate to the larger academic and scholarly publishing communities. Sustain scholarly communications.
The Literary Lifeline
The Literary Lifeline is a tribute to the transporting and consoling power of reading. In this insightful and moving book, Kevin Harvey affirms the importance that language and literature can play in our lives, reminding us of reading's enduring, and sometimes surprising, ability to help us through times of illness, grief, and uncertainty. Interweaving fragments from his own experience of reading, Harvey takes us on a fascinating tour of reading for therapeutic effect, exploring the rise of shared reading and other uses of bibliotherapy in various social and personal contexts. He argues, through a series of compelling stories and life experiences, that reading not only benefits physical and emotional wellbeing, but that it also humanises the care process, particularly in institutional settings where personhood can be threatened or undermined completely. Whether he's writing about the drama and delight of reading aloud to other people, the humane magic of the public library, or the loss of his beloved brother and his improvised attempt to read through grief, Harvey offers us an engaging take on the solace of reading and the gift of the written word. Entertaining, highly accessible, and teeming with illuminating observations and ideas, The Literary Lifeline is a book that will appeal to both scholars and general readers alike.
