Latin to the Rescue! - How to make sense of English spelling by learning a bit of Latin
This book is a middle schooler's secret weapon designed to grow our kids' spelling skills by engaging their curiosity about word origins and language history. I am a big fan of word study books. They have improved my son's spelling for sure, but as he plowed through the piles of Greek and Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes, I knew something was missing. The missing link was the 'why' - the curiosity factor.Why is there a silent S in 'island'?Why 'possess' possesses more S's than 'obsess'?Why 'derive' has one R, while 'arrive' has two? And are 'derive' and 'arrive', by any chance, related to 'river'?Why 'prefix' has one F, while 'suffix' has two?Is there any logic behind all those Ls in 'delusion, ' 'illusion, ' and 'collusion'?What is the 'scent' in 'crescent, ' 'fluorescent, ' and 'incandescent'?English is a layered language, its spelling reflecting the history of conquests (Roman, Saxon, Norman) and cultural changes (Christianization, Renaissance, etc.) However, up to 90% of multi-syllable words in English are of Latin origin. Even the most basic knowledge of Latin helps breathe meaning into boring spelling rules.In this book I introduce the absolute beginner basics of Latin grammar and morphology that explain many features of English spelling. I also offer bits of conversational Latin (just for fun and bragging rights!) and some thematic study of Latin words whose roots produced lots of derivatives in English (body parts, food, house, nature, and personal qualities). The Advanced Placement Program in Italian: History and Analysis explores a peculiar aspect of the teaching of Italian in the United States through the Advanced Placement Program in Italian. To date, there is no in-depth analysis; this book offers one. After fifteen iterations of the AP Exam in Italian, it seemed an appropriate time to assess the situation. This book thus offers an initial evaluation of the results of the Advanced Placement Program in Italian. The first chapter deals with a historical reconstruction of the college access exams of Italian: the Achievement Test, the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), the AATI National Italian Exam (NIE), and the APP in Italian. The second and third chapters analyze the AP Italian exams from 2012 to 2022. The data are provided directly by the College Board, and the reports are prepared each year by the AP Italian Language and Culture Chief Readers. The aim is to provide some guidance for teachers, institutional bodies, and organizers. Convergence and divergence in Ibero-Romance across contact situations and beyond
This book aims to provide a better understanding of convergence and non-convergence phenomena, such as divergence, from different theoretical perspectives. It brings together nine case studies that deal with contact between languages found in the Iberian Peninsula (Castilian, Catalan, Portuguese and Basque), between Spanish or Portuguese and another language (such as English), and between different varieties from Europe and other continents. The volume thus unites views from two fields that rarely interact: contact linguistics and dialectology. It discusses the mechanisms and consequences of language contact within the Ibero-Romance world, a geographical space characterised by a high rate of multilingual speakers and settings. The contributions deal with various combinations of convergence and divergence, for example between different varieties of the same language, language stability despite contact, as well as less studied aspects, such as the relation between language contact and second language acquisition, the linguistic landscape perspective of language contact, and divergence in linguistic identity construction.

Throughout the last two centuries, Hebrew metrics was studied by leading linguists and specialists in medieval Hebrew poetry. Nowadays, it has disappeared from the academic discussion such that it is sometimes even difficult to find scansions or the name of the meter in new editions of poems. This book aims to rectify this gap, helping readers to understand the metric structure of this poetry in order to facilitate the work of editing and cataloguing those samples still in manuscript form for future editors. Delgado presents his view of Andalusi Hebrew metrics, as encountered in medieval manuals of Arabic and Hebrew metrics and scattered notes in the works of Andalusi Hebrew philologists. Whilst twentieth-century scholars spoke about the adaptation of Arabic metrics to Hebrew, he instead approaches these compositions by Andalusi Jews (10th-13th c.) as Arabic metrics written in Hebrew, thus emphasising how Hebrew poetry of the Andalusi Jews can help us to understand the general evolution of Arabic strophic poetry, and its experimental evolution, which is quite unlike classical and strophic Arabic poetry.This method respects the Hebrew vowel system, and does not necessitate alteration of word morphology, leaving the guttural letters quiescent (unless required by metrical license); nor does it necessitate guesses about metres that are not in the classical catalogue. Although the author has not found each and every classical metre from Andalusi Hebrew poetry included in this manual, they are all catalogued, either in case someone finds them in future or because they help us to comprehend the metrical structures that are characteristic of strophic poetry. As such, this monograph will be of great interest to scholars of Hebrew metrics.
