Some Architects' Portraits in Nineteenth-Century America
This is the first study devoted to the portraits of nineteenth-century American architects. It is an examination of the way the iconography of such images changed over time to reflect the changing social status of the architect as the profession evolved during the century. Portraits in oil on canvas, drawings, and photography in the text range from Charles Willson Peale's image of William Buckland in the late eighteenth century to John Singer Sargent's portrait of Richard Morris Hunt in the late 1890s. The book has been praised as "a unique use of visual resources, supported by formidable primary research and a thorough analysis of secondary literature." Illustrations.
Biblioteca Angelica Ms. 1551
This volume consists of three sets of watercolor drawings, each depicting non-Europea peoples or places in Asia and the Americas. The volume belonged to the famous collector and antiquarian Camillo Massino (1620-1677), and was part of a large donation to the library by his descendants in the 19th century. This is the first in-depth investigation of the three series in terms of materials or manufacture, possible relations to one another or other contemporaneous illustrations, and their role in advancing understanding of the depicted peoples. Clues within the drawings, their style and content suggest not only new interpretations, but specific links between and among them, and likely origins, placing them squarely into the most intense period in the early modern era of European interest in these cultures. Anatomia Humana
Anatomia Humana is a very special work featuring 533 study drawings by the anatomist Ronny B. Koseck. Many people wanted to see the original drawings from his anatomical studies to understand what one does and, not least, what one has to learn during an anatomical studies. For the first time, the author, artist, and anatomist opens his diaries, folders, and paper collections in which he created his extensive study-like drawings. If you just recognized the so-called Triple A, then you already know what makes this book so special. Ronny B. Koseck has been an artist since 2005, and since 2009 he has studied humanistic teachings extensively to become one of the few anatomists to be able to work in this field. Since he always kept his own notes, it's not surprising that quite a lot has accumulated since then. He never expected to present his own works to the public - until now! This volume alone contains 533 (+1) of his works, of which there are well over 1,000. The most diverse aspects of the humanist's bones as well as his various muscles are explored here. In order to ultimately focus on the drawings, this publication is more of an illustrated book than a teaching tool. The studies carried out have captions so that you, too, know exactly what the studies were about. In this volume, you will find the original and therefore authentic study drawings, some of which will surely inspire you (...).

Optical Corrections in the Sculpture of Donatello
There is considerable evidence for Donatello's use of optical corrections that scholars have largely ignored. It may come in some degree from an unwillingness to accept the idea that such visual effects, developed only in the 16th century & not common until the Baroque, were even possible in the early Renaissance. This study, by its arguments & its photographic evidence, may reopen the discussion of optical corrections in the work of Donatello &, perhaps, in that of some of his contemporaries & followers as well. Contents: Introduction; Donatello's Sculpture in the Round; The Reliefs; Bibliography of Frequently Cited Sources; & 64 black & white photos of Donatello's sculptures.
Pain and Politics in Postwar Feminist Art
Between 1966 and 1976, American artist Nancy Spero completed some of her most aggressively political work. Made at a time when Spero was a key member of the anti-war and feminist arts-activism that burgeoned in the New York art world during the period, her works demonstrate a violent and bodily rejection of injustice. Considering the ways in which anti-war and feminist art used emotion as a means to persuade and protest, Pain and Politics in Postwar Feminist Art examines the history of this crucial decade in American art politics through close attention to Spero's practice. Situating her work amongst the activism that defined the era, this book examines the ways in which sensation and emotion became political weapons for a generation of artists seeking to oppose patriarchy and war. Exemplary of the way in which artists were using metaphors of sensation and emotion in their work as part of the anti-Vietnam war and feminist art movements in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Spero's practice acts as a model for representing how politics feels. By exploring Spero's political engagement anew, this book offer a profound recontextualization of the important contribution that Spero made to Feminist thought, politics and art in the US.
Manifesta, Art, Society and Politics
This is the first monograph fully dedicated to critically investigating the political, economic, artistic, urban, and societal relationships of Manifesta - European Biennial of Contemporary Art, a European nomadic biennial initiated in the post-Cold War era. Despite being one of the most important recurrent exhibitions taking place in Europe, surprisingly little has been written about it since the mid-2000s, Manifesta, Art, Society and Politics provides a deeply-researched and engaging analysis of the the critically overlooked Manifesta exhibitions, as well as it's changing goals and discourse since the first edition in 1996. The book is split into four parts, divided by theme and following the exhibitions chronologically. Providing a comprehensive overview of one of the most important biennials in Europe, Manifesta, Art, Society and Politics investigates the relationship between large-scale art exhibitions, culture-led regeneration, and urban transformation. It is essential reading for students and researches of exhibition and curatorial studies, art history, and cultural studies.
Curating Transcultural Spaces
Curating Transcultural Spaces asks what a museum which enables the presentation of multiple perspectives might look like. Can identity be global and local at the same time? How may one curate dual identity? More broadly, what is the link between the arts and processes of identity construction? This volume, an indispensable source for the process of engaging with colonial history in Germany and beyond, takes its starting point from the 'scandal' of the Humboldt Forum. The transfer of German state collections from the Ethnological Museum and the Museum for Asian Art, located at the margins of Berlin in Dahlem, into the centre of Germany's capital indicates the nation's aspiration of purported multiculturalism and cosmopolitanism; yet the project's resurrection of the site's former Prussian city palace, which was demolished during the GDR, stands in opposition to its very mission, given that the Prussian rulers benefited from colonial exploitation. By examining the contrasting successes of other projects, such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC, Curating Transcultural Spaces compellingly argues for the necessity of taking post-colonial thinking on board in the construction of museum spaces in order to generate genuine exchange between multiple perspectives.

Joseph Csaky
Joseph Csaky (1888-1971), a neglected pioneer of early Modernism, was a native of Hungary who became a dedicated member of the Parisian avant-garde. He took part in the 1912 Section d'Or Exhibition, considered by many to mark the high point of the Cubist movement. He was an intimate friend of such innovative giants as Picasso, Braque, & Lager. One of the first artists to apply Cubist principles to sculpture, Csaky produced a substantial body of work comparable in quality to that of Brancusi & Archipenko; yet he spent the last 30 years of his life in obscurity & was virtually destitute at his death. This ground breaking study includes a detailed discussion of his career, over 100 illus. of his major sculpture, & a translation of the artist's autobio. that provides a wealth of new info. about the early Parisian avant-garde.
Reading Mediated Life Narratives
Calling attention to the unseen mediation and re-mediation of life narratives in online and physical spaces, this ground-breaking exploration uncovers the ever-changing strategies that authors, artists, publishers, curators, archivists and social media corporations adopt to shape, control or resist the auto/biographical in these texts. Concentrating on contemporary life texts found in the material book, museums, on social media and archives that present perceptions of individuality and autonomy, Reading Mediated Life Narratives exposes the traces of personal, cultural, technological, and political mediation that must be considered when developing reading strategies for such life narratives. Amy Carlson asks such questions as what agents act upon these narratives; what do the text, the creator, and the audience gain, and what do they lose; how do constantly evolving technologies shape or stymie the auto/biographical "I"; and finally, how do the mediations affect larger issues of social and collective memory? An examination of the range of sites at which vulnerability and intervention can occur, Carlson does not condemn but stages an intercession, showing us how it is increasingly necessary to register mediated agents and processes modifying the witnessing or recuperation of original texts that could condition our reception. With careful thought on how we remember, how we create and control our pictures, voices, words, and records, Reading Mediated Life Narratives reveals how we construct and negotiate our social identities and memories, but also what systems control us.
The Sublime in the Visual Culture of the Seventeenth-Century Dutch Republic
Contrary to what Kant believed about the Dutch (and their visual culture) as "being of an orderly and diligent position" and thus having no feeling for the sublime, this book argues that the sublime played an important role in seventeenth-century Dutch visual culture.By looking at different visualizations of exceptional heights, divine presence, political grandeur, extreme violence, and extraordinary artifacts, the authors demonstrate how viewers were confronted with the sublime, which evoked in them a combination of contrasting feelings of awe and fear, attraction and repulsion. In studying seventeenth-century Dutch visual culture through the lens of notions of the sublime, we can move beyond the traditional and still widespread views on Dutch art as the ultimate representation of everyday life and the expression of a prosperous society in terms of calmness, neatness, and order. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, architectural history, and cultural history. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0) 4.0 International license. John Singer Sargent
A comprehensive catalogue of Sargent's charcoal portraits, capturing high society, professions, and the arts in an era of profound transformation In comparison with his portraits in oil, John Singer Sargent's charcoal portraits are relatively little known. In this authoritative new volume, Richard Ormond documents the nearly 700 drawings that make up this distinct strand of Sargent's oeuvre. These portraits capture the essence of British and American high society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, portraying an elite clientele that includes aristocracy, royalty, politicians, artists, writers, actors, financiers, and philanthropists. Among Sargent's subjects are such prominent figures as the Astors, Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Du Ponts, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Ethel Barrymore, W. B. Yeats, and Winston Churchill. Though renowned for his paintings of women, these charcoal portraits also reveal Sargent's interest in depicting athletes across a variety of sports, from cricket and fencing to football and polo. This shift in subject matter from prewar to postwar, along with a sparser style characteristic of his charcoal work, casts new light on Sargent's depictions of the period's social landscape. Surviving letters between Sargent and his patrons, reminiscences recorded in contemporary diaries, and David McKibbin's extensive correspondence with sitters, both document the portraits and provide a vivid and human picture of the artist at work. Passive Tranquillity
This is a print on demand publication. Born in 1698, Della Valle came to Rome in 1725 upon the death of his master, Giovanni Foggini. There he remained until his death in 1768. The phrase "passive tranquillity" refers both to the style of Della Valle's sculpture & the ambiance of 18th-cent. Rome, &, further, serves to distinguish Della Valle from his better known precursors, Gianlorenzo Bernini & Michelangelo. Theirs was a sculpture of the heroic & expressive. Della Valle's sculpture represents figures of an introverted, serene type. In its demonstrations of the ways in which Della Valle's art could have been formed by the institutions & cultural currents of 18th-cent. Rome, the text seeks to account for that sense of quiescence & composure common to the arts of settecento Rome. Illustrations.

Blue
Discover how the color blue evolved from a rare and sacred pigment to a powerful tool of artistic expression--from medieval altarpieces to modernist experiments. From the cobalt glazes of ancient Egypt to Yves Klein's bold monochromes, blue has carried meanings both sacred and subversive across eras. Along the way, blue has been a symbol of power and purity, of sorrow and transcendence. This book traces how those meanings, symbolism, and iconography shifted through the evolving availability of pigments such as lapis lazuli, indigo, and synthetic ultramarine. Readers will see how a color, once costly and elusive, became central to artistic practice, both materially and metaphorically.A wide-ranging selection of iconic works--from Egyptian faience and medieval manuscripts to Giotto's radiant frescoes, Vermeer's quiet interiors, Monet's shimmering waters, and the radical experiments of Hokusai, Picasso, and Yves Klein--show how artists have used blue to evoke emotion, suggest atmosphere, and reimagine the visible world. Each image is paired with a thoughtful reflection on its making and meaning; and how the pigment was sourced, applied, and understood in its cultural moment.Designed for visual impact and intellectual clarity, the fascinating juxtaposition of art from all periods and all continents invites readers to look closely at masterpieces both surprising and familiar --and to reconsider how a single color has reflected and reshaped the human experience.
Pink
Discover how the color pink evolved from a symbol of innocence and frivolity to a powerful vehicle for artistic play, ambiguity, and subversion. Long associated with delicacy and sentiment, pink has also been used to express grandeur, sensuality, irony, and rebellion. This richly illustrated volume explores how the meaning and function of pink have changed across cultures and centuries-- from Sassetta's Renaissance saints and Boucher's idyllic visions to the dreamlike florals of O'Keeffe and the saturated islands of Christo and Jeanne-Claude.Readers will encounter pink as a mark of divine humility in religious paintings by El Greco and Pontormo; as a signal of luxury and desire in the flirtatious scenes of Fragonard and the refined elegance of Boucher; and as a radical material in modern and contemporary works by Paul Signac, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Takashi Murakami. The book is organized around forty artworks that each feature pink in a striking or significant way.Arranged loosely in chronological order, each entry pairs a full-page image with a short, insightful essay that reveals how artists used pink--through pigment, and depictions of clothing, light, and flesh--to shape meaning and mood. Throughout, timelines, maps, and sidebars offer cultural context and historical depth, including a vivid chart of historically and poetically named pinks--from cuisse de nymphe and rose bonbon to vieux rose and rose vineux--that reflect the color's remarkable expressive range.Visually layered and full of unexpected connections, Pink invites readers to look again at a color too often dismissed--and to see how it has illuminated, disguised, and transformed works of art for centuries.

In Praise of Make-Up
Why do women wear make-up? Their answers are often evasive: "To feel good? Could they stop wearing make-up? "No!" The idea of no longer wearing make-up can even be perceived as an attack on identity. In an elegant, luminous style, the author plunges us into a history of make-up that demonstrates the importance of the cosmetic gesture since human beings became civilized. "S'arranger" is an art of compromise, of openness, a benevolent game rather than a deceptive artifice. Behind a lipstick or mascara, there's a whole way of being, more nuanced, more enchanted, less violent than that of men.

After Caliban
In After Caliban, Erica Moiah James examines the rise of global Caribbean artists in the 1990s and their production of a decolonized art history for the Caribbean. She draws on Aim矇 C矇saire's rewriting of Shakespeare's The Tempest, in which Caliban becomes the sole author of his own story, dissolving his fixed position as colonized in relation to Prospero as colonizer. James shows how visual artists such as Marc Latamie, Janine Antoni, Belkis Ay籀n, Edouard Duval-Carri矇, and Christopher Cozier followed C矇saire's model by employing a range of practices and methodologies that refused marginalization. Just as C矇saire decolonized The Tempest, so too did these artists, who crafted a decolonial aesthetic that redefined their own cultural and historical narratives and positioned art as a key pathway toward a postcolonial future. By providing the foundation for a postcolonial, post-Caliban art world, these artists redefined the critical and popular notion of contemporary Caribbean art. At the same time, James argues, they fulfilled C矇saire's dream for a postcolonial Caribbean while creating a nonhegemonic art historical practice that exists beyond modern binaries and borders.

Yokai Monsters
This exquisitely produced volume with a silk cover, colored edges, Swiss and Japanese tube binding, and ribbon ties explores Japan's most haunting monsters through the eyes of its greatest printmakers. Japanese folklore teems with strange and spectral beings-- yōkai that slither from wells, creep through forests, or inhabit forgotten household objects. These creatures have long reflected deep cultural anxieties and obsessions. Their influence endures today, pulsing through manga, anime, and horror cinema like walking nightmares haunting our daily lives. In follow up to his bestselling Yōkai Ghosts, Charlier examines these beings through their myths, habitats, and behaviors, uncovering the human fears and desires they embody. With the voice of a storyteller and the insight of a scholar, he traces how these spirits emerged from a world lit only by lanterns, when shadow and silence gave rise to the imagination's most haunting macabre inventions. Organized thematically, the book's chapters focus on particular types of yōkai--animal spirits, haunted objects, female demons, and more--placing them in their cultural and historical context while revealing their continued relevance. More than a hundred woodblock prints by artists such as Hokusai, Kuniyoshi, Yoshitoshi, Kunisada, and Yoshimori bring these monsters vividly to life. Their dramatic and often humorous depictions helped shape how yōkai were seen and understood in the nineteenth century--and laid the foundation for visual traditions that continue today. Beautifully produced with a special Japanese binding, colored edges and closing straps, this volume will appeal to readers fascinated by Japanese folklore, printmaking, horror, and the art of the uncanny.
