Negotiating Digital Heritage Infrastructures
Negotiating Digital Heritage Infrastructures examines the infrastructural qualities of museum work that influence the ability of cultural institutions to support participatory and socially inclusive missions.Drawing on data gathered in Scotland, Sweden, and Germany and taking an infrastructure studies approach, the book focuses on the socio-technical negotiations underpinning the everyday practices of museum staff. The book examines the work that is done behind the scenes, including the everyday tasks of collecting, archiving, displaying museum objects and retrieving information. Tran argues that while the technical components of infrastructure are necessary for memory-making and knowledge production, it is the social part of museum infrastructure that enables more open and decentralised modes of memory-making. The book shows how these negotiations affect the ability of museum infrastructures to accommodate and support growth and development, expanding access and establishing modes of connection to external partners and services. It illuminates the less visible practices of museums, which nevertheless directly affect their more public, outward-facing activities.Negotiating Digital Heritage Infrastructures will be of interest to academics and students who are engaged in the study of museums and heritage. It will be particularly useful to those with an interest in public participation, social inclusion, heritage management, the digitisation of collections, data aggregation, and human-centred design approaches.

Japan's Manga Revolution
Journey through Japan's illustrated history and discover the roots of manga before it took the world by storm. In this compelling survey, art historian Andreas Marks traces the development of Japanese illustrated books in premodern times. As early as the 17th century, Japanese publishers were producing thousands of illustrated titles on subjects ranging from religion and poetry to celebrated beauties, famous kabuki actors, farting warriors, and adventure tales. This flourishing book culture laid the foundation for the vibrant manga and comics industry of today. Marks explores this evolution through five key works, including: Kitagawa Utamaro's Illustrated Book of Selected Creatures (1788) -- a beautifully illustrated collection of plants and animals paired with poetry.Hokusai's Sketchbooks (early 1800s) -- featuring hundreds of innovative drawing and design ideas by Katsushika Hokusai, whose work influenced many renowned European artists. The New Illustrated Water Margin -- Hokusai's adaptation of a Chinese novel about a band of fictional heroes with superpowers, offering a bold reimagining of the story. The Tale of Shiranui (1849 - 1910) -- an adventure novel serialized over six decades. The early-20th-century Current Affairs Manga -- the first periodical to use the word "manga" in its title, providing illustrated commentary on contemporary political events.Japan's Manga Revolution offers the first comprehensive overview of Japan's rich tradition of illustrated storytelling and its lasting impact on visual culture worldwide.

Huma Bhabha: Welcome . . . to the One Who Came
A significant catalogue of Pakistani-American artist Huma Bhabha's layered and nuanced sculptures and works on paper that center on a reinvention of the figure and its expressive possibilities. Through the artist's fusion of materials and influences, Bhabha's work unites the ancient and the futuristic, evoking both familiarity and otherworldliness. Her formally innovative practice pulls from a wide range of references, from those that span the history of art to quotidian influences such as science fiction and horror films and the makeshift structures and detritus of urban life. Instinctive and rigorous, her work brings diverse aesthetic, cultural, and psychological touchstones into contact with matters of surface, materiality, and formal construction. This publication highlights Bhabha's ability to move between a wide range of media and forms, creating deeply resonant hybrid figures that seem to simultaneously dwell in the past, present, and future. Published on the occasion of two concurrent exhibitions at David Zwirner in New York in 2024, Welcome . . . to the one who came includes a text by the curator Tausif Noor that investigates the theme of alienation in Bhabha's work. In his essay, the curator and writer Peter Eleey situates her practice within the arc of art-historical models and contextualizes her first foray into working with cast iron.

Marc Quinn
This striking exhibition book features photography that showcases Marc Quinn's new and existing sculptures, paintings, drawings, and evocative frozen works. Light into Life encompasses monumental sculptures in the Kew landscape alongside a gallery exhibition that examines our complex and often challenging relationship with the natural world. It includes newly conceived artworks inspired by Kew's archives, scientific research, and horticulture. These are accompanied by a selection of existing pieces, many of which explore the idea of nature as a fundamental part of humanity, a prominent focus of Marc Quinn's practice since the 1990s. Together, the works explore our common biological origins and reflect on humanity's capacity to both preserve and destroy nature. Quinn's reflective artworks are well-presented in the exhibition book's gloss paperback format, with stunning imagery seamlessly spanning multiple pages, alongside an essay by Francesca Gavin and contributions by Prof. William J. Baker and Dr. Melanie-Jayne Howes. The saddle stitch binding allows the book to lay flat, showcasing this spectacular body of work.
Northern European Art in the Norton Simon Museum
Celebrating the cultural significance and clarity of vision evident in Northern European art of the fifteenth through the eighteenth century This book features Dutch, Flemish, Early Netherlandish, and German paintings and works on paper from the fifteenth through the eighteenth century, including preeminent names such as Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt van Rijn, as well as lesser-known artists such as Sebastian Stoskopff and Johannes Verspronck. Illuminating one of the finest collections of Northern European art in the United States, the book traces the histories of ninety-five extraordinary paintings and drawings, shedding new light on the artistic significance and material properties of these objects. Works of art that emphasize the humanity of their subjects--and the capacity of oil paint to render these qualities almost achingly real--is a throughline that unites the paintings featured here, from the tender gaze of Rembrandt's Portrait of a Boy (1655-60) to the freshly cut flowers and curious insects in Rachel Ruysch's Nosegay on a Marble Plinth (ca. 1695), to the recently conserved masterpieces Adam and Eve (ca. 1530) by Lucas Cranach. Magic Metamorphosis
What are picture transformation books [blow books]? The historical roots of picture transformation books can be traced back almost 500 years to the early 16th century. They are first-grade rarissima and are among the most rarely found and most fantastical types of book known to us today. Worldwide, only four hand-painted copies dating from earlier than 1750 are known to exist - either in libraries or private collections. This may be the reason why they have remained almost unnoticed by book and manuscript researchers and have not therefore been the subject of adequate academic research. The planned publication Magic Metamorphosis - The Secrets of a Rare Italian Picture Album Revealed aims to close this gap in research. How does a blow book work? A transformation or blow book is a kind of "trick book" composed of repeated sequences of pictures that allow an optical illusion or facilitate the performance of an amazing magic trick. To this end, index with several tabs or indentations, almost invisible from a distance, is cut along the fore-edge of the volume. Each of these tabs correlates with a very specific pictorial motif. When leafing through the transformation book, the performer can precisely grasp one of the tabs with his thumb and thus show the audience a desired picture motif or make it disappear again. Several pages are unpainted, so that the blow book can also made to be seemingly empty - a magical effect. As early as the 17th century, it was customary for the magician to have a spectator blow on the transformation book during the performance - a kind of magical gesture. The term "blow book", which is most commonly used in English-speaking countries today, can be traced back to this gesture. Where were blow books presented historically? In historical times, this trick was performed as part of a magic show for all social classes: on festive occasions in royal and princely houses, at the soirees so popular in aristocratic circles, at fairs, exhibitions, in pubs and inns or on the street. What is the significance of blow books for cultural history? The importance of blow books within cultural history is repeatedly documented by numerous mentions in historical sources. In his memoirs, the Indian imperial mogul Jahangir (1569-1627) reports enthusiastically about the performance of this magical transformation at his court. In his novel Der Seltzame Springinsfeld, the famous German writer and Baroque poet Hans Jakob Christoph von Grimmelshausen (1622-1676) also made the blow book the subject of his story no less than three times, describing it in all its facets over an entire eleven pages. The blow book even found its way into specialised mathematics and physics volumes: for example, in the works of the two famous polymaths Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680) and Caspar Schott (1608-1666) it is mentioned as a "mechanical fascination". Today, blow books are also available on the book market for children - as a kind of educational tool for practising presentation and speaking skills. What was the motivation behind this research into blow books? This research was given impetus by a globally unique picture album (Disegni Antichi Bizzarri) produced in Italy at around 1650 and discovered by the author Thomas Stauss in Paris at the end of the 1990s: although this picture album was lacking index, it was clearly identifiable as a picture transformation, or blow book. In 2018, fortuitous circumstances enabled the author to fi nally acquire this rare object for his collection and he has been researching it intensively ever since. Of particular significance for the analysis of this album was and is its historical connection to the history of Swiss natural science. The artist used the famous work Historia animalium by the Zurich natural scientist and physician Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) as a reference or model book for the depiction of the animals, fish and birds presented in the album. Online Museum Collections and Social Media
Museums increasingly digitize collections to expand public access and foster engagement beyond institutional spaces. Katharina Geis explores how digital museum images are used, shared, and curated across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest. Drawing on ethnographic research - including participant observation and 90 interviews - she examines how digital infrastructures and social contexts shape curation practices. By tracing how users search for, edit, and share images, the study reveals how digital image curation becomes a way of knowing about, with, and through artefacts in everyday life.

History as unfinished business--a definitive guide for an artist's recent practiceBetween 2005 and 2019, Hong Kong-born Australian artist John Young Zerunge created eleven art series that he called "The History Projects." This book is a critical guide to this expansive body of artworks, which explore diasporic memory, transcultural identity, and what Young describes as an "ethical responsibility" toward the past. The Grand Valley
In the final, absorbing volume of his Three Paintings Trilogy, philosopher and critic Morgan Meis explores the art of Joan Mitchell and in particular one of her crowning achievements, the Grand Valley series. Mitchell, a twentieth-century American artist who found herself living and working in France, is a figure of contradictions-at once formidable and fragile, solitary and hungry for human connection. The Grand Valley paintings, born from a memory not her own, become a focal point for understanding Mitchell's approach to abstraction and landscape. Meis examines the pain and, at times, even violence within Mitchell's work, connecting it to her turbulent life and the critical interpretations of her art (including her struggle to be treated as seriously as her male peers). As with the previous acclaimed volumes in this trilogy, Meis begins with a work of art and moves outward toward history, philosophy, and religion to provide context and insight. With his characteristically disarming wit and linguistic playfulness, Meis investigates the idea of the artist's self, drawing upon the mystical aspects of Carl Jung's thought and discovering parallels between Mitchell and obsessive creators like Claude Monet and Gertrude Stein.Humorous and accessible, yet always willing to grapple with the most vexing and challenging issues of human finitude, The Grand Valley brings an innovative trilogy to a rich and satisfying conclusion.

Pain and Politics in Postwar Feminist Art
Between 1966 and 1976, American artist Nancy Spero completed some of her most aggressively political work. Made at a time when Spero was a key member of the anti-war and feminist arts-activism that burgeoned in the New York art world during the period, her works demonstrate a violent and bodily rejection of injustice. Considering the ways in which anti-war and feminist art used emotion as a means to persuade and protest, Pain and Politics in Postwar Feminist Art examines the history of this crucial decade in American art politics through close attention to Spero's practice. Situating her work amongst the activism that defined the era, this book examines the ways in which sensation and emotion became political weapons for a generation of artists seeking to oppose patriarchy and war. Exemplary of the way in which artists were using metaphors of sensation and emotion in their work as part of the anti-Vietnam war and feminist art movements in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Spero's practice acts as a model for representing how politics feels. By exploring Spero's political engagement anew, this book offer a profound recontextualization of the important contribution that Spero made to Feminist thought, politics and art in the US.
Manifesta, Art, Society and Politics
This is the first monograph fully dedicated to critically investigating the political, economic, artistic, urban, and societal relationships of Manifesta - European Biennial of Contemporary Art, a European nomadic biennial initiated in the post-Cold War era. Despite being one of the most important recurrent exhibitions taking place in Europe, surprisingly little has been written about it since the mid-2000s, Manifesta, Art, Society and Politics provides a deeply-researched and engaging analysis of the the critically overlooked Manifesta exhibitions, as well as it's changing goals and discourse since the first edition in 1996. The book is split into four parts, divided by theme and following the exhibitions chronologically. Providing a comprehensive overview of one of the most important biennials in Europe, Manifesta, Art, Society and Politics investigates the relationship between large-scale art exhibitions, culture-led regeneration, and urban transformation. It is essential reading for students and researches of exhibition and curatorial studies, art history, and cultural studies.
Curating Transcultural Spaces
Curating Transcultural Spaces asks what a museum which enables the presentation of multiple perspectives might look like. Can identity be global and local at the same time? How may one curate dual identity? More broadly, what is the link between the arts and processes of identity construction? This volume, an indispensable source for the process of engaging with colonial history in Germany and beyond, takes its starting point from the 'scandal' of the Humboldt Forum. The transfer of German state collections from the Ethnological Museum and the Museum for Asian Art, located at the margins of Berlin in Dahlem, into the centre of Germany's capital indicates the nation's aspiration of purported multiculturalism and cosmopolitanism; yet the project's resurrection of the site's former Prussian city palace, which was demolished during the GDR, stands in opposition to its very mission, given that the Prussian rulers benefited from colonial exploitation. By examining the contrasting successes of other projects, such as the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC, Curating Transcultural Spaces compellingly argues for the necessity of taking post-colonial thinking on board in the construction of museum spaces in order to generate genuine exchange between multiple perspectives.

Joseph Csaky
Joseph Csaky (1888-1971), a neglected pioneer of early Modernism, was a native of Hungary who became a dedicated member of the Parisian avant-garde. He took part in the 1912 Section d'Or Exhibition, considered by many to mark the high point of the Cubist movement. He was an intimate friend of such innovative giants as Picasso, Braque, & Lager. One of the first artists to apply Cubist principles to sculpture, Csaky produced a substantial body of work comparable in quality to that of Brancusi & Archipenko; yet he spent the last 30 years of his life in obscurity & was virtually destitute at his death. This ground breaking study includes a detailed discussion of his career, over 100 illus. of his major sculpture, & a translation of the artist's autobio. that provides a wealth of new info. about the early Parisian avant-garde.
Reading Mediated Life Narratives
Calling attention to the unseen mediation and re-mediation of life narratives in online and physical spaces, this ground-breaking exploration uncovers the ever-changing strategies that authors, artists, publishers, curators, archivists and social media corporations adopt to shape, control or resist the auto/biographical in these texts. Concentrating on contemporary life texts found in the material book, museums, on social media and archives that present perceptions of individuality and autonomy, Reading Mediated Life Narratives exposes the traces of personal, cultural, technological, and political mediation that must be considered when developing reading strategies for such life narratives. Amy Carlson asks such questions as what agents act upon these narratives; what do the text, the creator, and the audience gain, and what do they lose; how do constantly evolving technologies shape or stymie the auto/biographical "I"; and finally, how do the mediations affect larger issues of social and collective memory? An examination of the range of sites at which vulnerability and intervention can occur, Carlson does not condemn but stages an intercession, showing us how it is increasingly necessary to register mediated agents and processes modifying the witnessing or recuperation of original texts that could condition our reception. With careful thought on how we remember, how we create and control our pictures, voices, words, and records, Reading Mediated Life Narratives reveals how we construct and negotiate our social identities and memories, but also what systems control us.

Holocaust Memory and Youth Performance
Through an examination of children's and youth plays and performances about the Holocaust from Germany, Israel, and the United States, this book offers an entirely new way of looking at the vital role of youth performance in coping with the legacy of historical tragedy. As the first book-length critical examination of this subject, Holocaust Memory and Youth Performance considers plays that are produced by major theatre companies alongside performances written by young authors and pieces taken from the diaries and memoirs of those who experienced the Holocaust as children or adolescents. While youth-focused plays about the Holocaust have been in the repertories of top professional companies throughout the world for decades and continue to be performed in theatres, schools, and community centers, they are often neglected in concentrated and comparative studies of Holocaust theatre. Erika Hughes fills this gap by examining plays (including The Diary of Anne Frank and Ab heure hei?t Du Sara), musicals, performances, scripts, a rock concert, a performance on Instagram, and pedagogically-focused works of applied theatre - a diverse collection of performances for young audiences that tell the stories of young people who experienced the Holocaust. Adopting Hannah Arendt's notion of natality as a powerful framework, this study examines the ways in which youth-theatre performances make a vital contribution to intergenerational witnessing and the collective memory of the Holocaust.
