Adi Nhyia
"Symbols are the bridges between our past and future-carrying the wisdom of our ancestors while shaping the world yet to come." Symbols are more than mere designs-they are the language of culture, history, and identity. From ancient hieroglyphics to modern iconography, they carry meaning across generations, shaping our understanding of the world. In Adi Nhyia A book of symbols, the author presents a groundbreaking collection of newly conceived African symbols, designed to honor the past while embracing the future. Rooted in traditional craftsmanship yet reimagined for contemporary expression, these symbols bridge ancestral wisdom with modern creativity. What began as sketches in the 1980s has evolved into a visionary archive, meticulously crafted with the help of the author's daughters. Unlike the Adinkra symbols of farewell, Adi Nhyia signifi es "getting together" and "meeting the future," embodying unity and forward-thinking artistry. This book is an invitation to artists, designers, and visionaries to explore a new visual language-one that speaks to where we come from and where we are going.
The Nightwatchman
Drawing on a rich archive of colonial photography, Mokoena explores how images of African policemen and nightwatchmen in colonial South Africa challenged traditional narratives of oppression, revealing how uniform and portraiture transformed the black male figure into an aesthetic subject worthy of admiration. This illustrated collection of essays brings into focus African men in colonial uniforms as a subject of portraiture. It extends the literature on colonial ethnographic photography by creating a narrative of nightwatchman portraiture from the rich archive of images. While a genre of photography developed around images of the 'Zulu warrior' after the defeat of the English at Isandlwana, Hlonipha Mokoena argues that the spectacle of the Zulu male body was inaugurated after the last Zulu king, Cetshwayo, was photographed as a posing subject. Much research has focussed on the African man as a functionary of settler power; these essays shift debates about how the body moves in history. Placed in uniform, the male subject becomes aestheticised and admired. Mokoena focuses on the sartorial selection processes and co-optation of colonial aesthetic culture that constructed the idea of the Nonqgqayi or nightwatchman as a fully formed photographic presence. The beauty captured in these images upends conceptions of colonial photography as a tool of oppression. In its focus on the figure of the black and brown fighting man, The Nightwatchman offers an innovative work on the history of portraiture in colonial South Africa and new avenues for the interpretation of visual representations of the black male figure.
Disoriented
'Desnortar', or disoriented, means to lose the north or the sense of direction, to disorient. In Disoriented a collective book from a gender perspective, we consciously seek to lose both the geographical north and the north of the contemporary art canon. We aim to rethink and disrupt, from feminist, LGTBQ+ and postcolonial approaches, the coordinates that have articulated the discourses on the art history and art system along the 20th and 21st centuries. Coordinates that define how these artistic practices and systems of modernity and the contemporary are understood, the cardinal directions and main conceptual issues, or which artists are relevant or expendable according to the narratives of avant-garde and contemporary art history. It is crucial to reinterpret and disorientate, to disnorth and thereby shatter these references to overcome the gaps that prevent the emergence of alternative knowledges. To address questions or artists often perceived as peripheral to a grand historical narrative, we propose an intersection of modern and contemporary art history, gender, feminist, queer and postcolonial approaches, and transnational interrelations. This intersectionality allows us to actively lose the north of the canon and to direct our gaze towards subjects outside the usual centres of legitimation. Mostly, we attend to women artists, to peripheral geographical centres, to subaltern collectives, or to practices or materials regularly considered of little artistic interest. All of the above critiques how conventional discourses have excluded some collectives or certain artistic proposals, and the resistances that have emerged against them.
Ancient Plaster
Ancient Plaster: Casting Light on a Forgotten Sculptural Material offers a fresh exploration of plaster in the sculpture of the ancient Mediterranean and beyond. Challenging the traditional focus on marble and bronze, this volume reveals the crucial role of plaster both in the sculptor's workshop and as a medium for finished sculpture. Combining academic insights with contemporary artists' perspectives, the book also delves into the controversial topic of life-casting in antiquity and provides groundbreaking new interpretations of well-known plaster objects such as those from the Roman city of Baiae, near Naples. With chapters extending the chronological and geographical scope to early modern Europe and contemporary art school contexts, the book illuminates plaster's versatility and the continuity of its use across millennia. By rehabilitating this material, often overlooked or lost to the archaeological record, the volume offers a transformative view of ancient sculpture, appealing to both scholars and art enthusiasts alike.
Performance
This book focuses on performance and performance-based artworks as seen through the lens of conservation, which has long been overlooked in the larger theoretical debates about whether and how performance remains.

Manga
A groundbreaking story of Japanese comics from their nineteenth-century origins to the present day The immensely popular art form of manga, or Japanese comics, has made its mark across global pop culture, influencing film, visual art, video games, and more. This book is the first to tell the history of comics in Japan as a single, continuous story, focusing on manga as multipanel cartoons that show stories rather than narrate them. Eike Exner traces these cartoons' gradual evolution from the 1890s until today, culminating in manga's explosion in global popularity in the 2000s and the current shift from print periodicals to digital media and smartphone apps. Over the course of this 130-year history, Exner answers questions about the origins of Japanese comics, the establishment of their distinctive visuals, and how they became such a fundamental part of the Japanese publishing industry, incorporating well-known examples such as Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon, as well as historical manga little known outside of Japan. The book pays special attention to manga's structural development, examining the roles played not only by star creators but also by editors and major publishers such as Kōdansha that embraced comics as a way of selling magazines to different, often gendered, readerships. This engaging narrative presents extensive new research, making it an essential read for enthusiasts and experts alike.

Painters in the Valley
This volume provides a much-needed reference work on artists active in the Albuquerque, New Mexico area from 1880 to 1990. It is a prime source of biographical information on many talented but little-known artists. Before 1950 many painters saw Albuquerque as a jumping-off point for the art colonies of Taos and Santa Fe. But noted artists such as Gerald Cassidy, Carl Redin, Carl Von Hassler and Esquipula Romero de Romero stayed on in the city for extended periods. After World War II Albuquerque came into its own as a leading center of artistic activity. It was home to innovative work that included the abstractions of Raymond Jonson and Richard Diebenkorn, the lithography done at the Tamarind Institute, and computer-generated art. The University of New Mexico and Sandia National Laboratories provided inspiration and employment for many artists. Further details on painters, their work, and the networks that supported them will be found in artist entries in this volume as well as in the Introduction.

Chroma
New discoveries of surviving color on sculpture spanning two millennia and across the globe, from ancient Greece to Tenochtitl獺n to Renaissance Europe Many ancient and early modern works that are viewed in monochrome today were once painted in vibrant colors. Lost to time until recently, the pigments and other surface treatments that originally adorned these objects offer a deeper appreciation of the cultures from which they originate. This handsome volume features new research by more than thirty international experts in polychromy, including art historians, conservators, scientists, and photographers. Identified through advanced technologies, scientific analyses, and in-depth research, their discoveries of surviving traces of color span the globe and vary in material, including an Archaic Greek marble sphinx, an ancient Near Eastern cloisonn矇 furniture plaque, Mexica (Aztec) limestone sculptures, and medieval and Renaissance European marbles and bronzes. This wide-ranging publication explores how these works further our understanding of ancient ideas around skin color, race, and gender; summarizes recent advances in the field; and considers polychromy's controversial rediscovery and modern reception--highlighting the role of reconstructions such as 3D-printed replicas and virtual animations in contemporary museum practice, as well as the resurgence of polychromy techniques in postmodern and contemporary European architecture. Breaking the Silence
A collection of essays that think with, against, and beside the intellectual questions that have engaged Michael Ann Holly throughout her storied career American scholar Michael Ann Holly (b. 1944) has devoted a decades-long career to the historiography and theory of art history. Some of the ideas with which she has grappled include the impossible material presence and experience of loss that drives the discipline of art history; the role of writing in art history and the never-ceasing tension language and objects; and melancholy, loss, and historical inquiry. For this exciting volume, more than a dozen of the top art historians working today were invited to think creatively about writing art history while engaging in intellectual conversation with Holly. The book's essays offer new and unsettling questions rather than tacitly reproducing canonized knowledge. Distributed for the Clark Art Institute

Westkunst, 1981
A reexamination of the Westkunst exhibition archives. In 1981, the Cologne trade-fair center hosted a large exhibition titled Westkunst: Zeitgen繹ssische Kunst seit 1939 (Western Art: Contemporary Art since 1939). Organized by art critic Laszlo Glozer and curator Kasper K繹nig, the Western-centric survey highlighted avant-garde art and politically charged themes of freedom and individual expression. By examining Westkunst's historiographical stakes in light of the Iron Curtain division of Europe, the show is revealed as paradigmatic of the ways in which hegemonic concepts of Western art and the accompanying processes of othering were fashioned in the art world. In this collective volume, Westkunst's universalizing claims are scrutinized by focusing on the artistic tendencies exhibited; on exhibitionary discourses and practices of decontextualization, comparison, and appropriation; on the alleged realization of the values of progress, freedom, and autonomy; on the enacted conceptions of temporality and the architectural devices of narrativization; and on the exhibition's blind spots and exclusions and the critical reactions it elicited. This analytic output makes fresh use of the archival materials, which are neither centralized nor systematized, with significant excerpts republished throughout the book. Seen through the lens of exhibition history, this revisiting of Westkunst sheds light on a broader trend of cultural conservatism that was gaining strength in the 1980s, just before the end of the Cold War and the start of new forms of globalization.

A fresh lens capturing the cosmos of Africa and its everlasting presence in our global societies. This lavishly illustrated volume approaches the vast continent of Africa from a variety of viewpoints; beyond prejudice and stereotypes, via cultural history and contemporary art: by means of permanent changes of perspective and a diversity of artistic voices. The history of humankind meets the colonial past and the omnipresence of aspects of Africa in many regions of the world. On the one hand, surprising views of Africa are focused on from Europe. And on the other, works and installations by Africans or protagonists from the diaspora present ideas, impulses and identities which all signify Africa. The texts illustrate the broad time frame from the first humans to Pan-Africanism and Afro-Futurism, as well as present literary and philosophical narratives. Conservation of Granite in Cultural Heritage
Bridging scholarly research and conservation practice, this volume presents fundamental guidance on the preservation of granite used in built heritage. The field of stone conservation has long needed a holistic perspective that embraces the needs of conservation professionals and provides scientific support to enable them to better analyze preservation issues and implement efficient, long-lasting treatments. Conservation of Granite in Cultural Heritage offers such a perspective by bridging scholarly research on the available literature related to granite decay and best practices from conservators working in the field and laboratory. First offering an overview of granitic rocks and their natural weathering, this volume then outlines the issues that arise when removing granite from quarries and incorporating it into what eventually becomes built heritage. Case studies are presented alongside guidelines for assessing conservation problems. This book will serve as a fundamental manual for students, conservation scientists, conservators, and restorers alike.
The Human in Bits
In The Human in Bits, Kris Cohen examines black abstractionist painting to demonstrate how race and computation are intimately entangled with the personal computer's graphic user interface. He shows how the personal computer and the graphical field of its screen meant to transform the human by transforming what environments humans were to labor in. It also provided the means for whiteness to tie itself to notions of colorblind meritocracy. Cohen focuses on the post-1960s experiments of black abstractionists Alma Thomas, Jack Whitten, Charles Gaines, and Julie Mehretu, who developed a nonrepresentational approach to blackness that was oriented more toward constraint than human expression. From Gaines's use of grids to Mehretu's layering of paint, these artists--in their knowledge that black life had always been conflated with numbers and bits of information--flirted with repetition, systems, and formulas to test other ways of being human. By demonstrating how these artists bypassed the white fear that the human would become interchangeable with data, Cohen reframes modernism and modernist art to account for racialization in computational cultures.
Curatorial Voice
Curatorial Voice considers the act of curation from a scientific perspective. Questioning the role of curators, the actual act of curation and the very sound of curatorial voice, Coleman works to dispel the stereotypes that have historically shrouded the work of curators in mystery.
