Las Vegas Ikebana: Maren Hassinger and Senga Nengudi
A richly illustrated guide to the somatic, conceptual and conversational practice of the underrecognized artist duoSince their first encounter on the telephone in Los Angeles in 1977, artists Maren Hassinger (born 1947) and Senga Nengudi (born 1943) have formed an expansive body of collaborations, and a lifelong friendship that spans nearly five decades. While maintaining rigorous solo practices rooted in sculpture and installation, the artists first connected through a shared language of movement. Together they produced suites of dances and performances, and later videos, artist books and conceptual correspondences that vitalized their artistic practices. The artists' early work in Los Angeles emerged within a milieu that included David Hammons, Franklin Parker, Houston Conwill, and Ulysses Jenkins, and the loose collective of Black artists known as Studio Z. Yet since the mid-'80s, following their respective departures from the city, the two women have lived on opposite sides of the country, keeping their connection alive through a long-distance exchange. Created through an ethos of experimentation and support, Las Vegas Ikebana explores the longevity and transformative nature of the artists' collaborations as they evolved across decades, geographies and media.Published in conjunction with the first-ever exhibition on the artists' shared practice, Las Vegas Ikebana: Maren Hassinger and Senga Nengudi is the first monograph to survey the work of the pioneering duo. Richly illustrated, the publication assembles a plethora of never-before or rarely seen artworks and ephemera alongside images of the exhibition and a new performance titled See-See Riders, choreographed by Nengudi. Newly commissioned essays by critics, curators and artists trace the performative and conceptual working method of the two artists in distinct historical periods. The book includes a never-before-published 1987 conversation between Hassinger and Nengudi; an extensive oral history between the artists and their longstanding supporters, curators Lowery Stokes Sims and Leslie King Hammond; and original essays by the volume's editor and exhibition curator Allie Tepper, critics Kemi Adeyemi and Sampada Aranke and artist Steffani Jemison--all of whom expand upon the artists' crucial system of support that persisted in periods of institutional neglect. A complete annotated chronology of the artists' collaborations, as well as exhibition histories, also accompany the book.

The Colonial Indian Army
This book records the history of the Indianization of the Armed Forces of the colonial British Indian Army. There was a very long history with regard to this matter. Various problems and challenges were there given the different culture, ethnicity, and tradition of the Indian troops. The British were very cautious in Indianizing the native troops. Their imperial interest was the foremost thing. The East India company did the same thing while the crown's rule also did not alter the British imperial interests. While fulfilling their interest, the British simultaneously took some policies, made some changes, went for modifications, implemented rules and regulations to make the colonial army more purpose- oriented, fulfilling their long term wishes in real. However, after the Second World war, the British came to understand that their imperial interest in India was about to end given the process of decolonisation in priority. The process of Indianization took a upside surge at the end of Second World war which culminated to the Independence of India. This book covers the timeline of the colonial period, beginning from the rule of East India company to the end of British Raj in India.

Romanticism
This richly illustrated volume invites readers to explore the phenomenon and fascination of Romanticism, a movement that shaped the cultural and aesthetic landscape of the nineteenth century and continues to resonate in modern consciousness. The Romantic era ignited a profound shift in the arts, celebrating imagination, emotion, and the sublime power of nature. The book offers a nuanced view of Romanticism's revolutionary impact. It journeys through the movement's origins in the experimental ferment of the eighteenth century, its apex in German, French, and British painting, and its later echoes across Europe and North America. The author examines key figures such as Caspar David Friedrich, J.M.W. Turner, Eugène Delacroix, and Théodore Géricault, exploring their transformative approaches to landscape, light, and human passion. The narrative also unravels the movement's intricate relationship with themes of melancholy, the sublime, and the spiritual reconciliation of the individual with the universal. Acclaimed art historian Norbert Wolf illuminates Romanticism's capacity to evoke longing, its poeticization of life through art, and its engagement with profound contradictions-- an embrace of both light and shadow. By tracing the stylistic and cultural trajectories of Romantic painting, from Germany's High Romanticism to the North American Hudson River School, he situates these works within broader artistic and intellectual traditions. Filled with breathtaking reproductions of major works, and backed by impeccable scholarship, Romanticism reveals a movement that transcended national boundaries and bridged the intersection of emotion, imagination, and the sublime.

Lotteva Wagner Davis
Lotteva Wagner Davis was an American original--a tattooist and western artist in the early to mid-20th century. Following in the footsteps of her parents, Gus and Maud Wagner--tattoo artists and carnival performers--Lotteva was raised in the carnival and started hand tattooing in 1919, when she was just nine years old. She was one of few tattooists to have completely bare skin; her mother forbade her father to tattoo her, relenting only after his death, but Lotteva didn't want to be tattooed by anyone but her father. This is the third book in the series on the Wagner family, Last of the Hand Tattoo Artists. It includes tattoo flash by Lotteva and her father, Gus, showing the evolution of hand tattoos from one generation to the next. According to her cousin, Lotteva was "a person with one foot grounded in the ordinary world and the other in this crazy carnival world."
Postmodernism and Video Art
Liz Kim traces the theories and artistic practices that articulated American experimental video through its key works and events, art critical discourse, as well as the politics of its funding and distribution during the 1970s into the 1980s, focusing on New York. This is a historical examination of the relationship between experimental video and postmodernism in the context of the early New York video scene as a foundational crucible of ideas and practices. Video grew out of both the acculturation of television, as well as the resistance against its hegemonic forms, as it enabled hybrid user-generated content. As such, video became a testing ground for postmodern thought, as it sat at the perfect nexus of mass media, art, and the politics of representation. This book historicizes the theories of video art through the shifts in representations of cultural identities, and the changes within its critical and structural supports. Through this process, chapters uncover new roots of postmodernism through historical evidence, widening the scope of the term and its concepts. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, film studies, and media studies.

Humor in Global Contemporary Art
Pursuing a new and timely line of research in world art studies, Humor in Global Contemporary Art is the first edited collection to examine the role of culturally specific humor in contemporary art from a global perspective. Since the 1960s, increasing numbers of artists from around the world have applied humor as a tool for observation, critique, transformation, and debate. Exploring how humorous art produced over the past six decades is anchored in local sociopolitical contexts and translated or misconstrued when exhibited abroad, this book opens new conversations regarding the functioning of humor and the ways in which art travels across the globe. With contributions by an impressive array of internationally based scholars covering six major continental regions, the book is organized into four distinct geographical sections: Africa and the Middle East, Asia and Oceania, South and North America, and Europe. This structure highlights the cultural specificity of each region while the book as a whole offers a critical perspective on the postcolonial, globalized art network. Reflecting on present-day processes of globalization and biennialization, which confront viewers with humorous art from a variety of cultures and countries, this book will provide readers with a culturally sensitive understanding of how humor has become vital to many contemporary artists working in an unprecedentedly interconnected world.

Mediterranean Tattoos
Modern tattooing gained widespread attention in the 18th century, when a British naval officer, Capt. James Cook, returned from Polynesia with "Prince Omai," the first fully tattooed man seen by the English court. His appearance sparked both fascination and intrigue. However, tattooing in Europe predates Cook's voyages by millennia. Evidence from the Paleolithic and Neolithic Eras reveals that tattooing has served various purposes, meanings, and visual styles throughout history. This book offers a chronological and geographical journey displaying key artifacts, testimonies, and artwork, exploring the diverse expressions and cultural roles of tattooing over time. It spans the broader and historical Mediterranean, including ancient Egypt, Italy, Greece, Israel, France, and the Balkans, as well as other regions with notable finds such as Peru, Siberia, and the Tarim Basin in northwestern China. This wealth of information aims to inspire contemporary tattoo artists and deepen understanding of this ancient, global tradition.
Rise Up
Drawing on new research, centring Black voices and perspectives, and celebrating Black Cambridge history, Rise Up focuses on the period from 1750 to 1850, when Britain became the world's first industrialised nation and one of history's largest empires. At the same time, Britain played a central role in the Atlantic slave trade, trafficking more captive African people than any other European power. Millions were forcibly abducted and transported to work on British-owned plantations in the Caribbean and Americas. In Britain, Black and white anti-slaverygroups and individuals campaigned for abolition. Despite opposition, laws were gradually enacted to abolish the slave trade in 1807, and enslavement in 1833. However, other exploitative systems including apprenticeship and indentured labour took their place. Financial compensation was awarded to former enslavers while the formerly enslaved received nothing. This is the story of the fight to end Atlantic slavery, its aftermath and ongoing legacies. It is told through the stories of individuals from across the Black Atlantic - many silenced or pushed to the margins. It interrogates historic objects and artworks from collections across the University of Cambridge and beyond, in conversation with responses from contemporary artists. Despite the passing of almost two centuries since Britain outlawed slavery, the struggles for autonomy, equality and social justice continue today.

The Cult of the Virgin Mary in Medieval Italy
Late medieval Italy witnessed the widespread rise of the cult of the Virgin, as reflected in the profusion of paintings, sculptures, and fresco cycles created in her honor during this period. The cathedral of papal Orvieto especially reflects the strong Marian tradition through its fresco and stained-glass window narrative cycles. In this study, Sara James explores its complex narrative programs. She demonstrates how a papal plan for the cathedral to emulate the basilica of S. Maria Maggiore in Rome, together with Dominican and Franciscan texts, determined the choices and arrangement of scenes. The result is a tour de force of Marian devotion, superior artistry, and compelling story-telling. James also shows how the narratives promoted agendas tied to the city's history and principal religious feasts. Not only are these works more interesting, sophisticated, and theologically rich than previously realized, but, as James argues, each represents the acme in their respective media of their generation in central Italy.

The Forms of Silence [ street photography ]
The Forms of Silence: Street Photography began many years ago with a simple but life-changing piece of advice from three dear friends-Tim, Shaba, and Paul-all experienced artists, publishers, and photographers. They saw something in me I hadn't yet recognized: that I had "the eye" for photography. Their encouragement led me to pick up a small camera and wander the streets, capturing fragments of life and experimenting with the way light and shadow converse. This journey, now approaching a decade, has been sustained by the unwavering support of those closest to me-my parents, siblings, my wife, my children, and friends like Johannes and Dave of the CEC family, who have walked beside me through every stage. Their belief in me, through seasons of uncertainty and wonder alike, has been a quiet but constant anchor. As a sociologist and theologian, my professional life is rooted in listening to the struggles and hopes of marginalized communities-work that often brings me to the edges of human vulnerability and resilience. Amid this intensity, I found myself longing for silence. Street and urban photography became that silence: a way to stand still, to breathe, and to find beauty in the overlooked corners of the everyday. I have always been drawn to the quiet transformations of the city - the way rain turns streets into living paintings, or how fallen leaves scatter like the soft kisses of Mother Nature upon the earth. These are the gestures that remind me there is poetry hidden everywhere, waiting patiently to be noticed.I don't see this book-or my work-as a masterpiece, for there are true masters of photography from whom I still have much to learn. Rather, I see it as a trace of my search-a personal record of listening for stillness in a world that rarely stops shouting.Sam Lee

Kinfolk 59
Issue Fifty-Nine of Kinfolk considers the meaning of "clean" as a ritual, a feeling and an instinct. If you're starting to think about spring cleaning, you can read our longform essay, which examines how clean we really need to be; or else find solace in Dirty Habits, which turns its attention to the universal pockets of imperfection we all have--dead plants, missing mugs or a junk drawer. We chart the boom in public bathing culture among younger generations in Tokyo and ask five perfumers and an expert to identify what "clean" actually smells like. We also meet David Bronner, whose soap company has taken on a life of its own: a family business turned countercultural force. And while you may expect to see an issue full of "clean lines" and minimalist design, we instead speak to Leonard Koren, one of the world's leading aesthetes, who has an entirely different proposition. Elsewhere, we meet Jessie Ware--the down-to-earth, bluntly funny British pop star who turned her mother's weekly Friday night dinners for family and friends into a beloved podcast. Plus, our contributors spend time with a dry cleaner, a dermatologist and a saxophonist, ask whether culture is dead, and try to make sense of Theseus' paradox. Since 2011, Kinfolk has set the standard for independent publishing in art, design, aesthetics, architecture, homes and interiors. Our quarterly lifestyle magazine is sold in over 100 countries, published in three languages and makes the perfect coffee table magazine or gift for a creative. Featuring inspiring photography, fashion and style, as well as examinations of slow living, Kinfolk is an art and design publication that seeks to promote quality of life and connect a community of creative thinkers.
