The Routledge Companion to Decolonizing Art, Craft, and Visual Culture Education
This companion demonstrates how art, craft, and visual culture education activate social imagination and action that is equity- and justice-driven. Specifically, this book provides arts-engaged, intersectional understandings of decolonization in the contemporary art world that cross disciplinary lines.Visual and traditional essays in this book combine current scholarship with pragmatic strategies and insights grounded in the reality of socio-cultural, political, and economic communities across the globe. Across three sections (creative shorts, enacted encounters, and ruminative research), a diverse group of authors address themes of histories, space and land, mind and body, and the digital realm. Chapters highlight and illustrate how artists, educators, and researchers grapple with decolonial methods, theories, and strategies--in research, artmaking, and pedagogical practice. Each chapter includes discursive questions and resources for further engagement with the topics at hand. The book is targeted towards scholars and practitioners of art education, studio art, and art history, K-12 art teachers, as well as artist educators and teaching artists in museums and communities.
The Sublime in the Visual Culture of the Seventeenth-Century Dutch Republic
Contrary to what Kant believed about the Dutch (and their visual culture) as "being of an orderly and diligent position" and thus having no feeling for the sublime, this book argues that the sublime played an important role in seventeenth-century Dutch visual culture.By looking at different visualizations of exceptional heights, divine presence, political grandeur, extreme violence, and extraordinary artifacts, the authors demonstrate how viewers were confronted with the sublime, which evoked in them a combination of contrasting feelings of awe and fear, attraction and repulsion. In studying seventeenth-century Dutch visual culture through the lens of notions of the sublime, we can move beyond the traditional and still widespread views on Dutch art as the ultimate representation of everyday life and the expression of a prosperous society in terms of calmness, neatness, and order. The book will be of interest to scholars working in art history, visual culture, architectural history, and cultural history. The Open Access version of this book, available at www.taylorfrancis.com, has been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0) 4.0 International license. John Singer Sargent
A comprehensive catalogue of Sargent's charcoal portraits, capturing high society, professions, and the arts in an era of profound transformation In comparison with his portraits in oil, John Singer Sargent's charcoal portraits are relatively little known. In this authoritative new volume, Richard Ormond documents the nearly 700 drawings that make up this distinct strand of Sargent's oeuvre. These portraits capture the essence of British and American high society in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, portraying an elite clientele that includes aristocracy, royalty, politicians, artists, writers, actors, financiers, and philanthropists. Among Sargent's subjects are such prominent figures as the Astors, Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Du Ponts, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Ethel Barrymore, W. B. Yeats, and Winston Churchill. Though renowned for his paintings of women, these charcoal portraits also reveal Sargent's interest in depicting athletes across a variety of sports, from cricket and fencing to football and polo. This shift in subject matter from prewar to postwar, along with a sparser style characteristic of his charcoal work, casts new light on Sargent's depictions of the period's social landscape. Surviving letters between Sargent and his patrons, reminiscences recorded in contemporary diaries, and David McKibbin's extensive correspondence with sitters, both document the portraits and provide a vivid and human picture of the artist at work. Anatomia Humana
Anatomia Humana is a very special work featuring 533 study drawings by the anatomist Ronny B. Koseck. Many people wanted to see the original drawings from his anatomical studies to understand what one does and, not least, what one has to learn during an anatomical studies. For the first time, the author, artist, and anatomist opens his diaries, folders, and paper collections in which he created his extensive study-like drawings. If you just recognized the so-called Triple A, then you already know what makes this book so special. Ronny B. Koseck has been an artist since 2005, and since 2009 he has studied humanistic teachings extensively to become one of the few anatomists to be able to work in this field. Since he always kept his own notes, it's not surprising that quite a lot has accumulated since then. He never expected to present his own works to the public - until now! This volume alone contains 533 (+1) of his works, of which there are well over 1,000. The most diverse aspects of the humanist's bones as well as his various muscles are explored here. In order to ultimately focus on the drawings, this publication is more of an illustrated book than a teaching tool. The studies carried out have captions so that you, too, know exactly what the studies were about. In this volume, you will find the original and therefore authentic study drawings, some of which will surely inspire you (...).

Biblioteca Angelica Ms. 1551
This volume consists of three sets of watercolor drawings, each depicting non-Europea peoples or places in Asia and the Americas. The volume belonged to the famous collector and antiquarian Camillo Massino (1620-1677), and was part of a large donation to the library by his descendants in the 19th century. This is the first in-depth investigation of the three series in terms of materials or manufacture, possible relations to one another or other contemporaneous illustrations, and their role in advancing understanding of the depicted peoples. Clues within the drawings, their style and content suggest not only new interpretations, but specific links between and among them, and likely origins, placing them squarely into the most intense period in the early modern era of European interest in these cultures. The book has been praised as "a unique use of visual resources, supported by formidable primary research and a thorough analysis of secondary literature." Illustrations.
Optical Corrections in the Sculpture of Donatello
There is considerable evidence for Donatello's use of optical corrections that scholars have largely ignored. It may come in some degree from an unwillingness to accept the idea that such visual effects, developed only in the 16th century & not common until the Baroque, were even possible in the early Renaissance. This study, by its arguments & its photographic evidence, may reopen the discussion of optical corrections in the work of Donatello &, perhaps, in that of some of his contemporaries & followers as well. Contents: Introduction; Donatello's Sculpture in the Round; The Reliefs; Bibliography of Frequently Cited Sources; & 64 black & white photos of Donatello's sculptures.

When Merlin goes into a playful bow, then raises his tail over the top of his head, a green laser light that matches the color of his eyes shines out from the tip of his tail, and that's when something magical is going to happen. Merlin also has the ability to understand what humans say, which tends to get him into trouble at times. Merlin has two best friends, Miracle and Rocky, both rottweilers who live with him at the ranch, and they do everything together. Merlin uses his powers to help a rottweiler in trouble at a shelter, who turns out to be Miracle, and saves the life of a newborn calf, which are a few of the adventures Merlin has. There are many mysterious things that happen out on the ranch that Merlin has to face along with his two best friends. Merlin also has a very close relationship with the guardian and feels he needs to protect her as well. Merlin has other friends that show up from time to time, a husky named Kiya, who is Merlin's wizard elder and provides him guidance, and a big barn Owl that keeps showing up. Merlin's magical tail will also help defend against the dangers that meet up with him, as well as the dangers that lie ahead. He will not have to fight these alone, however; the guardian and his friends will be right there beside him. So join Merlin as he goes on some

The Grand Valley
In the final, absorbing volume of his Three Paintings Trilogy, philosopher and critic Morgan Meis explores the art of Joan Mitchell and in particular one of her crowning achievements, the Grand Valley series. Mitchell, a twentieth-century American artist who found herself living and working in France, is a figure of contradictions-at once formidable and fragile, solitary and hungry for human connection. The Grand Valley paintings, born from a memory not her own, become a focal point for understanding Mitchell's approach to abstraction and landscape. Meis examines the pain and, at times, even violence within Mitchell's work, connecting it to her turbulent life and the critical interpretations of her art (including her struggle to be treated as seriously as her male peers). As with the previous acclaimed volumes in this trilogy, Meis begins with a work of art and moves outward toward history, philosophy, and religion to provide context and insight. With his characteristically disarming wit and linguistic playfulness, Meis investigates the idea of the artist's self, drawing upon the mystical aspects of Carl Jung's thought and discovering parallels between Mitchell and obsessive creators like Claude Monet and Gertrude Stein.Humorous and accessible, yet always willing to grapple with the most vexing and challenging issues of human finitude, The Grand Valley brings an innovative trilogy to a rich and satisfying conclusion.
