The Dictionary of Flowers
A beautifully illustrated prose poetry collection exploring womanhood, healing, and the delicate tensions of identity in contemporary India.Stepping into a breezy and colourful piece, reading this book is more like getting to know a person. The exchange of pleasantries at the start with dainty conversations that refrain from straying too far. Building a careful foliage of words that soften into laughter and a crisscross of comfortable questions. The rough puzzle pieces slowly fit together as you stumble across parts they keep hidden from the daylight. Cracks in their initial flawlessness that never fail to surprise you. And after you get to know them with their joys, regrets and stubborn quirks, and wonder how it aligns with your own, they stay by your side. Hopeful. Vulnerable. With every guard down. Waiting to see if you would accept them as a whole. And that is what the dictionary of flowers will do to you. Stay with you while you get to know the entire picture. And wait. And wait for you to make your final choice.
It's Too Late. Do It Anyway!
Hey culture worker! Are you feeling alone and afraid while the world burns? It's Too Late. Do It Anyway! is two books in one, created for cultural workers who want to get off the racial capitalist high-speed-train-to-nowhere and start structuring revolution through collective care. It's Too Late. Do It Anyway! offers two routes into a fractal support network designed to shed absurd, useless forms of artworld prestige in favor of collectively producing a world organized to support caregivers. It's Too Late tells the true story of an exhibition about care that exposed the difference between making symbolic gestures and actually doing something. Do It Anyway! serves as a manual for The Hologram, a prism-shaped collective care protocol conceptualized by artist Cassie Thornton, inspired by the Social Solidarity Clinic of Thessaloniki in Greece, and now practiced by people all over the world. In It's Too Late. Do It Anyway! multiple voices weave The Hologram into the present, the past, and the future all at once, ultimately putting the story and the tools it describes into each reader's life-wizened hands. This is not really a book; it's a pathway out of the tough spot we are all in right now. Anyone can make use of it, even you.
Kaj - A Collection
Kaj Andersen was born in Odense, Denmark in 1932. He was a remarkable figure who excelled both as a footballer and a celebrated artist. His early professional years were marked by a passion for both sports and the arts, leading him to pursue a dual career. On the football field, Kaj was known for his skilful play and leadership, as team captain for 'B1913 Odense', earning him a place in Denmark's national team during 1963. Unfortunately whilst visiting Hungary for a game, Kaj contracted Tuberculosis and spent 9 months in hospital after which he was no longer able to play at the international level. Off the field, his artistic prowess shone through his vibrant paintings, characterised by bold strokes and vivid colours in layered oil abstract pieces amongst others. Over his lifetime, Kaj Andersen created and sold many hundreds of pieces of work before his sudden death whilst playing football for the old boys in 1995 at the age of just 62.--Kaj Andersen blev f繪dt i Odense, Danmark i 1932. Mirar Hoy Lo Estetico En La Edad Media
This book tackles the necessary task of contrasting the medieval perspective on the aesthetic with our current perspective, so distant from each other! Some thirty prestigious scholars, philosophers, philologists, theologians, art experts, from various countries and languages imbibe the various medieval traditions and thinkers in an attempt to illuminate their conception of the aesthetic with the aim of enriching our present-day outlook. The book is structured in three thematic areas. The first section is a sort of prolegomena to the question of beauty in the Middle Ages. A second section studies and analyses the various currents of thought in medieval aesthetics, not only in terms of their mutual interrelationship, but also in terms of their connection with classical thought. Finally, a third part analyses the reception and evaluation of medieval aesthetics by contemporary culture, as well as its influence on the latter. The work arises from the conviction that dialogue between the present and the past, and particularly the medieval past, is fundamental in the task of resolving the many ruptures that corrode our culture. Harmony, beauty, as is evident in the contributions that weave the fabric of this work, springs magically - or rather, divinely - from the mysterious and unfathomable - and always novel - interweaving of differences, between the present and the past, the medieval and the contemporary, between theology, philosophy, philology, art..., between different cultures and countries. This work is an example of this, illuminating our times from the extraordinary experience lived by these people who preceded us and who have contributed - although often ignored - to the shaping of the best of our civilisation.
Hospital Aesthetics
In Hospital aesthetics, Amanda Cachia introduces a broad array of contemporary artists who are engaging in relational aesthetic activism and socially engaged art practice. She analyzes practices in which artists are taking health and care into their own hands by making works that engage with the ever-subjective experience of being sick and ill. The first truly comprehensive monograph in critical disability studies to be grounded in a deep and scholarly understanding of modern and contemporary art practice, this work presents hospital aesthetics as a decolonizing gesture, wherein contemporary artists go against the tendency for the medical industrial complex to treat disabled bodies as specimens and, eventually, archives. Cachia aims to codify "hospitable aesthetics" as a category or genre of disability art that is more relevant now than ever before, as increasing numbers of artists turn to the hospital or doctor's office as a canvas, literally and symbolically.

Vol. 29
There's something odd about twin-lens reflex (TLR) film cameras, but very appealing. I can't really explain it. TLR cameras are bulky, awkward to use and, well, kind-of weird. Still, I love picking one up and taking it out to shoot. Mamiya TLRs comprise a rare line of TLR cameras in that they were the only pro TLR cameras that had interchangeable lenses other than Contaflex. That fact alone made me long for one a long time. When I bought my Yashica Mat EM, there were Mamiya TLR cameras available, but usually at two to three times the cost. Like the other medium-format (MF) cameras - Hasselblad, Bronica, Pentax, etc. - the Mamiyas were far out of reach. That is until around 2003 when photographers were ditching their film cameras, and selling them cheap. They may not be as cheap now, but they're still worth the prices. As I said, shooting with a TLR is an odd experience, but one definitely worth experiencing.

Japan's Manga Revolution
Why have Japanese manga captivated readers worldwide, and where did they originate? In this compelling survey, art historian Andreas Marks traces the development of Japanese illustrated books in premodern times. As early as the 17th century, Japanese publishers were producing thousands of illustrated titles on subjects ranging from religion and poetry to celebrated beauties, famous kabuki actors, farting warriors, and adventure tales. This flourishing book culture laid the foundation for the vibrant manga and comics industry of today. Marks explores this evolution through five key works, including: Kitagawa Utamaro's Picture Book of Crawling Creatures (1788) -- a beautifully illustrated collection of plants and animals paired with poetry.Hokusai's Sketchbooks (early 1800s) -- featuring hundreds of innovative drawing and design ideas by Katsushika Hokusai, whose work influenced many renowned European artists. The New Illustrated Water Margin -- Hokusai's adaptation of a Chinese novel about a band of fictional heroes with superpowers, offering a bold reimagining of the story. The Tale of Shiranui (1849 - 1910) -- an adventure novel serialized over six decades. The early-20th-century Current Affairs Manga -- the first periodical to use the word "manga" in its title, providing illustrated commentary on contemporary political events.Japan's Manga Revolution offers the first comprehensive overview of Japan's rich tradition of illustrated storytelling and its lasting impact on visual culture worldwide.
Negotiating Digital Heritage Infrastructures
Negotiating Digital Heritage Infrastructures examines the infrastructural qualities of museum work that influence the ability of cultural institutions to support participatory and socially inclusive missions.Drawing on data gathered in Scotland, Sweden, and Germany and taking an infrastructure studies approach, the book focuses on the socio-technical negotiations underpinning the everyday practices of museum staff. The book examines the work that is done behind the scenes, including the everyday tasks of collecting, archiving, displaying museum objects and retrieving information. Tran argues that while the technical components of infrastructure are necessary for memory-making and knowledge production, it is the social part of museum infrastructure that enables more open and decentralised modes of memory-making. The book shows how these negotiations affect the ability of museum infrastructures to accommodate and support growth and development, expanding access and establishing modes of connection to external partners and services. It illuminates the less visible practices of museums, which nevertheless directly affect their more public, outward-facing activities.Negotiating Digital Heritage Infrastructures will be of interest to academics and students who are engaged in the study of museums and heritage. It will be particularly useful to those with an interest in public participation, social inclusion, heritage management, the digitisation of collections, data aggregation, and human-centred design approaches.

Huma Bhabha: Welcome . . . to the One Who Came
A significant catalogue of Pakistani-American artist Huma Bhabha's layered and nuanced sculptures and works on paper that center on a reinvention of the figure and its expressive possibilities. Through the artist's fusion of materials and influences, Bhabha's work unites the ancient and the futuristic, evoking both familiarity and otherworldliness. Her formally innovative practice pulls from a wide range of references, from those that span the history of art to quotidian influences such as science fiction and horror films and the makeshift structures and detritus of urban life. Instinctive and rigorous, her work brings diverse aesthetic, cultural, and psychological touchstones into contact with matters of surface, materiality, and formal construction. This publication highlights Bhabha's ability to move between a wide range of media and forms, creating deeply resonant hybrid figures that seem to simultaneously dwell in the past, present, and future. Published on the occasion of two concurrent exhibitions at David Zwirner in New York in 2024, Welcome . . . to the one who came includes a text by the curator Tausif Noor that investigates the theme of alienation in Bhabha's work. In his essay, the curator and writer Peter Eleey situates her practice within the arc of art-historical models and contextualizes her first foray into working with cast iron.

Works of art that emphasize the humanity of their subjects--and the capacity of oil paint to render these qualities almost achingly real--is a throughline that unites the paintings featured here, from the tender gaze of Rembrandt's Portrait of a Boy (1655-60) to the freshly cut flowers and curious insects in Rachel Ruysch's Nosegay on a Marble Plinth (ca. 1695), to the recently conserved masterpieces Adam and Eve (ca. 1530) by Lucas Cranach. Online Museum Collections and Social Media
Museums increasingly digitize collections to expand public access and foster engagement beyond institutional spaces. Katharina Geis explores how digital museum images are used, shared, and curated across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest. Drawing on ethnographic research - including participant observation and 90 interviews - she examines how digital infrastructures and social contexts shape curation practices. By tracing how users search for, edit, and share images, the study reveals how digital image curation becomes a way of knowing about, with, and through artefacts in everyday life.
Magic Metamorphosis
What are picture transformation books [blow books]? The historical roots of picture transformation books can be traced back almost 500 years to the early 16th century. They are first-grade rarissima and are among the most rarely found and most fantastical types of book known to us today. Worldwide, only four hand-painted copies dating from earlier than 1750 are known to exist - either in libraries or private collections. This may be the reason why they have remained almost unnoticed by book and manuscript researchers and have not therefore been the subject of adequate academic research. The planned publication Magic Metamorphosis - The Secrets of a Rare Italian Picture Album Revealed aims to close this gap in research. How does a blow book work? A transformation or blow book is a kind of "trick book" composed of repeated sequences of pictures that allow an optical illusion or facilitate the performance of an amazing magic trick. To this end, index with several tabs or indentations, almost invisible from a distance, is cut along the fore-edge of the volume. Each of these tabs correlates with a very specific pictorial motif. When leafing through the transformation book, the performer can precisely grasp one of the tabs with his thumb and thus show the audience a desired picture motif or make it disappear again. Several pages are unpainted, so that the blow book can also made to be seemingly empty - a magical effect. As early as the 17th century, it was customary for the magician to have a spectator blow on the transformation book during the performance - a kind of magical gesture. The term "blow book", which is most commonly used in English-speaking countries today, can be traced back to this gesture. Where were blow books presented historically? In historical times, this trick was performed as part of a magic show for all social classes: on festive occasions in royal and princely houses, at the soirees so popular in aristocratic circles, at fairs, exhibitions, in pubs and inns or on the street. What is the significance of blow books for cultural history? The importance of blow books within cultural history is repeatedly documented by numerous mentions in historical sources. In his memoirs, the Indian imperial mogul Jahangir (1569-1627) reports enthusiastically about the performance of this magical transformation at his court. In his novel Der Seltzame Springinsfeld, the famous German writer and Baroque poet Hans Jakob Christoph von Grimmelshausen (1622-1676) also made the blow book the subject of his story no less than three times, describing it in all its facets over an entire eleven pages. The blow book even found its way into specialised mathematics and physics volumes: for example, in the works of the two famous polymaths Athanasius Kircher (1602-1680) and Caspar Schott (1608-1666) it is mentioned as a "mechanical fascination". Today, blow books are also available on the book market for children - as a kind of educational tool for practising presentation and speaking skills. What was the motivation behind this research into blow books? This research was given impetus by a globally unique picture album (Disegni Antichi Bizzarri) produced in Italy at around 1650 and discovered by the author Thomas Stauss in Paris at the end of the 1990s: although this picture album was lacking index, it was clearly identifiable as a picture transformation, or blow book. In 2018, fortuitous circumstances enabled the author to fi nally acquire this rare object for his collection and he has been researching it intensively ever since. Of particular significance for the analysis of this album was and is its historical connection to the history of Swiss natural science. The artist used the famous work Historia animalium by the Zurich natural scientist and physician Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) as a reference or model book for the depiction of the animals, fish and birds presented in the album. The Grand Valley
In the final, absorbing volume of his Three Paintings Trilogy, philosopher and critic Morgan Meis explores the art of Joan Mitchell and in particular one of her crowning achievements, the Grand Valley series. Mitchell, a twentieth-century American artist who found herself living and working in France, is a figure of contradictions-at once formidable and fragile, solitary and hungry for human connection. The Grand Valley paintings, born from a memory not her own, become a focal point for understanding Mitchell's approach to abstraction and landscape. Meis examines the pain and, at times, even violence within Mitchell's work, connecting it to her turbulent life and the critical interpretations of her art (including her struggle to be treated as seriously as her male peers). As with the previous acclaimed volumes in this trilogy, Meis begins with a work of art and moves outward toward history, philosophy, and religion to provide context and insight. With his characteristically disarming wit and linguistic playfulness, Meis investigates the idea of the artist's self, drawing upon the mystical aspects of Carl Jung's thought and discovering parallels between Mitchell and obsessive creators like Claude Monet and Gertrude Stein.Humorous and accessible, yet always willing to grapple with the most vexing and challenging issues of human finitude, The Grand Valley brings an innovative trilogy to a rich and satisfying conclusion.
