This sumptuous book is the only full treatment of Leonard's extraordinary life and distinctive body of work, published in a new edition with a beautiful updated cover, giving his photographs the artistic recognition that they deserve. The greater part of the book consists of his legendary shots of musicians, but uniquely among volumes on Leonard the text presents the whole range of his work, including travel, war, celebrity, fashion, and nude photography, while there are also chapters on the images of his early and late periods. Also included are rare portraits of the cultural icons of his day, such as Marilyn Monroe and Albert Einstein. Above all, Leonard is best known for his jazz images. In a fascinating essay, David Houston reveals how Leonard's friendships with jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington allowed him to capture the magical moments of the Harlem and Paris jazz clubs in the 1940s and '50s, using his unique command of cinematic lighting to capture their essence as performers. Published in cooperation with the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans and the Herman Leonard Estate, the book includes a foreword by Quincy Jones.
Slow Looking: The Art of Nature
Slow Looking: The Art of Nature is a unique celebration of the relationship between art and nature across millennia. Eschewing a linear narrative of art, this inspirational collection of artworks allows readers to make connections between the nature that surrounds them and the vision of a dazzling wide range of artists. Art historian Olivia Meehan has mixed paintings, drawings, sculpture, textiles, and decorative arts from across the globe in thought-provoking juxtapositions, inviting us to find something new in a familiar landscape and experiment in observing nature's wonders.Exploring the various intersections between artistic techniques and thematical elements across land, water, and sky, the pages reveal the deep--rooted connections between human beings and our natural world: the form and colors of a Georgia O'Keeffe painting of a shell echo a carved fossil from 500,000-300,000 BCE; Van Gogh's olive trees (1889) are juxtaposed with ancient Egyptian carved limestone dated between 1353-1323 BCE; and while water lilies captivated Claude Monet, their allure also traveled to mid--18th century India in Hunhar II's watercolor work.Following nature's patterns, Slow Looking: The Art of Nature takes readers on a journey from fields, mountains, forests, and glaciers to lakes, ponds, waterfalls, and rivers, and on to sunrises, rainbows, comets, clouds, constellations, and so much more. This guided observation of nature offers a whole new way of contemplating the world.

Manet and Morisot
An intimate exploration of an artistic friendship at the heart of the Impressionist movement ?douard Manet (1832-1883) was a pioneer of modern painting, and Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was the sole female founding member of the Impressionist group. To each other, they were colleagues, friends, and--following Morisot's marriage to Manet's brother--family. Unfolding over a period of fifteen years, theirs was arguably the closest relationship between any two members of the Impressionist circle. Through collaboration, competition, and mutual collecting, each influenced the other's work and, in the process, changed the course of modern art. The story of this relationship has most often been told through Manet's magnificent portraits of Morisot, but the two artists' connection was more than one between painter and muse. Exploring pairs and groups of related works, Manet and Morisot reveals that, while Morisot looked to Manet for inspiration during her early career, as Morisot's work became more daring and garnered widespread acclaim, Manet began to follow her example, emulating her choice of subjects, her high-keyed colors, even her rapid, fluttering brushstrokes. Illustrated essays and entries challenge gendered perspectives in the Manet literature, while correspondence and a technical study invite readers into the two artists' shared social circle and contrasting studio practices. Published in association with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco Exhibition Schedule: Legion of Honor, Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco (October 11, 2025-March 1, 2026) Cleveland Museum of Art (March 29-July 5, 2026)

Painting Like the Impressionists
Impressionism, an art movement pioneered by a handful of avant-garde painters based in Paris in the 1870s, gave academic oil painting a vivacity and spontaneity it had previously lacked, and remains to this day the single most popular style of art for gallery-goers and amateur painters alike. This elegantly-written book, by a professional artist and scholar, is both an instructional guide to incorporating Impressionist techniques into your own painting, and an illuminating investigation into how those first Impressionists actually painted their pictures. As such, it will fascinate both the painter and the art historian. This new book provides detailed advice on paints, brushes and canvas, as used by the original Impressionists and still widely available today. It discusses the process of making an Impressionist painting from initial vision to final completion and analyses the role of composition, light and tone, colour and paint handling. Finally, it gives an overview of the subject matter most closely associated with the Impressionists.

The Art and Industry of Stucco Decoration in Europe
An interdisciplinary perspective no the spread and development of the stucco technique between the 16th and 18th centuries, and the different forms it took throughout Europe. Text in English and Italian. Stucco decorations have traditionally been studied considering their formal and artistic qualities. Although much research and numerous publications have explored the works of stucco artists and their cultural context, little attention has been paid to their professional role in relation to the other actors involved in the decorative process (architects, painters, sculptors, patrons), the technical skills of these artists, and how their know-how contributed to the great professional success they enjoyed. From the 16th to the 18th century, many of the stucco decorations in churches and palaces throughout Europe were made by masters from the border area between what is now Canton Ticino and Lombardy. This collection of essays aims to examine how these artists worked from Spain to Poland, from Denmark to Italy, via the Netherlands, France, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Austria, adapting to the realities of the different contexts. The authors examine these issues with an interdisciplinary approach, considering art history and social history, the history of artistic techniques, and the science of materials. Text in English and Italian.

Examining the "uncanny valley" experienced by humans in the presence of the humanoidPublished with Funda癟瓊o Bienal de S瓊o Paulo. This fourth and final volume in a series of educational publications in conjunction with the 36th Bienal de S瓊o Paulo centers on the Invocation held in Tokyo in April 2025, exploring the complex relationship between humans and machines through sound, performance and visual practices. Inspired by the concept of the "uncanny valley" proposed by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori in 1970, the Tokyo Invocation reflects on the ambiguities of the human in the face of technology and the issues that emerge at the intersection between art, artificial intelligence and corporeality. This book addresses issues such as the impact of artificial intelligence on artistic creation, the performativity of machines and the affective dimension of the relationship between humans and automated devices.

Made in L.A. 2025
Animated by its inimitable residents and cacophonous disorder, Los Angeles is brought to life through interventions by 28 emerging and under-recognized local artistsPublished with Hammer Museum. The Made in L.A. biennial highlights the practices of artists working throughout the greater Los Angeles area, with an emphasis on emerging and under-recognized artists. The catalog for the seventh iteration, Made in L.A. 2025, includes curatorial essays and commissioned texts focusing on each of the 28 featured participants, spanning generations and working across a wide range of mediums. Neither myth nor monolith, Los Angeles is many things to many people, and its dissonance is perhaps its most distinguishing feature. Attitude draws them together: Each engages with this city in ways alternately literal, formal, material, and metaphoric. Conceived or made in Los Angeles, they are of this city and nowhere else. In the spirit of the exhibition, the book embraces writers' voices from a broad range of disciplines. Among the contributions are interviews, critical essays and experimental writing exercises, all centered on and influenced by Los Angeles.

John Bock
Meaningfully meaningless. The augmented reality book for John Bock John Bock (b. 1965 in Gribbohm, lives in Berlin) is one of the most important contemporary performance and video artists. In his works characterized by humor and absurdity, the artist places language, human bodies, everyday objects, and spaces in peculiar relationships to each other. He attained international recognition with the installation LiquidityAuraAromaPortfolio at the first Berlin Biennale in 1998. Together with his work Voll die Beule from 2013, it is now included in the collection of the Kunsthalle Mannheim. The present volume not only contextualizes and documents John Bock's work, but also immerses the viewer/reader directly in his performances. When a selected page is brought into focus with the new edition-cantz app, the image begins to move. The first edition cantz book with augmented reality, in which the artist's head emerges and a filled rubber glove leaks out over the page. A completely new approach to the works of John Bock. The publication is packaged in a sock designed by the artist and includes a foreword by Johan Holten, a preface by Ulrike Widmaier Picasso, and contributions by Sebastian Baden, Jens Hoffmann, Antonella Bianca Meloni, and Marianne Wagner & Till Wyler von Ballmoos. John Bock studied at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts and since 2004 has taught at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe as Professor of Sculpture. He has participated in the Biennale di Venezia, and his works have been featured worldwide in solo exhibitions at, among others, the Berlinische Galerie, the Contemporary Austin, Texas, the Barbican Centre, London, and the St瓣del Museum, Frankfurt.
Larry Rivers
Between French Modernism and the New York School: The idiosyncratic art of the pioneer of American Pop Art. The American painter, musician, and filmmaker Larry Rivers (* 1923 in New York City; + 2002 ibid.) is considered one of the most influential protagonists of the New York art scene in the period from the 1950s to the 1970s. He played with Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, was a close friend of Frank O'Hara, and pioneered Pop Art. In dealing with contemporary artist colleagues and historical role models, he always strived to making painting visible as a medium of reflection. From an early age, Rivers was preoccupied with French painting of the late nineteenth century. During his stay in Paris in 1961/62, he met Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle, whereupon the range of materials he used was extended to wood, cardboard, and electric light. For the first time, the present volume-the first monograph in twenty years-sheds light on Larry Rivers' idiosyncratic art with a view to the tension between traditional French painting and Abstract Expressionism around Willem de Kooning. The catalogue accompanies the first European exhibition of Larry Rivers' work in forty years at the Ludwig Museum Koblenz.

The Future of the Art World
A wide-ranging collection of interviews conducted by New York Times contributor Andr獺s Sz獺nt籀 sheds light on the future of the art world in a rapidly changing societyThis is the third in a series of books investigating the future of the museum, following on The Future of the Museum: 28 Dialogues (2020) and Imagining the Future of the Museum: 21 Dialogues with Architects (2022). If the previous volumes examined the "software" and the "hardware" of the museum, respectively, the third installment of the trilogy surveys the social, cultural, economic, institutional and technological conditions in which museums operate. The conversations engage voices not heard in the prior volumes: artists, curators, collectors, members of the art trade, social scientists, entrepreneurs and others. The dialogues range across a panorama of topics, from the future of the art gallery and outlooks for the art fair, to the role of globalization in the art world, to the internal and external forces transforming cultural institutions, to the impacts of climate change, to perspectives on the future of digital creativity and artificial intelligence. Several conversations shed light on the evolution of specific global regions--from Asia to Africa to Latin America to the Gulf nations and the Middle East--where some of the most transformative investments in arts infrastructure are currently being made. The dialogues grapple with the question of whether the art world can adjust to the future incrementally, or whether it is heading into a period of systemic, paradigmatic transformation. Taken together, the conversations offer a portrait of an art world seeking to adapt to a society undergoing an accelerated period of change.Andr獺s Sz獺nt籀 (born 1964) is a Budapest-born, Brooklyn-based author and editor who has been conducting conversations with art-world leaders since the early 1990s, including as a frequent moderator of the Art Basel Conversations series. Silicon Valley Reimagined
Silicon Valley Reimagined invites readers into an alternate 1949 where the future arrived decades early. In this richly illustrated art book, the world of postwar California bursts with electronics that belong more to the 1980s-or even today-yet are imagined through the industrial design language of the 1940s.Presented as a product catalog from the fictional Benedetti Brothers & Company, the book showcases the gadgets and innovations that residents of the South Bay might have browsed in January 1949. Wide-screen televisions, video game consoles, cell phones, projectors, and even early laptops and smartwatches are featured here-not in sleek, modern forms, but as boxy, chrome-trimmed devices wrapped in Bakelite and brushed metal. It's a playful collision of eras, where technology leaps ahead but style remains rooted in mid-century design. Each page combines full-color artwork with careful world-building details, evoking the look and feel of a vintage retail catalog. Readers step into a world that never existed, one where megastores filled their shelves with products that belonged to a different timeline. The South Bay becomes the heart of this alternate Silicon Valley long before the name was ever coined, transformed into a hub of imagined consumer electronics at the dawn of the Atomic Age.At once speculative history, design experiment, and visual chronicle, Silicon Valley Reimagined captures the thrill of innovation through the lens of "what might have been." It's a catalog from another universe-an invitation to browse, dream, and imagine a 1949 where the future was already here.
